Choosing a photo with Christmas lights is the key to this light-up Christmas canvas!
I made both a 11×14 and a 16×20 photo canvas at Walgreens using photos from camera roll featuring Christmas lights. One is an old photo of my kids, and the banister has lights. The other is of my Christmas tree from last year all decorated.
If you have any family photos by the Christmas tree that could work. Another idea is to have a photo shoot with your kids and have them hold Christmas lights!

DIY Light Up Christmas Canvas
PrintSupplies Needed
- printed photo canvas (11x14 and 16x18 pictured)
- string of battery-operated fairy lights
- push pin or wood skewer (to poke holes in canvas)
- Hot glue and glue gun
- packing tape
Directions
1
Poke holes in the canvas carefully where there are lights on the photo.
2
Flip your canvas over. Starting at one corner, push each tiny light through a hole from the back so it pokes out just slightly. Secure the wire to the back of the canvas using hot glue. You can zigzag the wire to fit your hole pattern.
3
Use glue or tape to secure the battery pack to the back of your canvas where it’s easy to access for turning on and off.
4
Turn on your fairy lights and watch your photo come to life!
More tips on how to make light-up canvas art:
- Use colored fairy lights for a fun, whimsical look.
- Create a constellation effect on a night sky photo!
- If you are using the Walgreens photo canvases, I removed the cardboard backing before starting this project.

I loved how this lighted canvas wall art turned out!
In the end, your Christmas canvas art isn’t just wall decor. It’s a glowing reminder of your favorite moments. This would make for a unique, cozy winter craft to make with friends. I think this would make a great grandparent gift. The light up effect is so cool looking!
