supplies needed for mother's day gifts in a jar

Grab some jars, and let’s make a cute Mother’s Day gift with these fun ideas!

My favorite jars to make these types of gifts are the Anchor Hocking Heritage jars from Walmart. They’re well-made, affordable, and super convenient to have around the house. The large 2-gallon glass jars are just $14 in-store, and there are other small and medium-sized varieties also like the 1/2 gallon smaller jar also pictured (around $6 in my store).

Hip Tip: HomeGoods and Target are also good spots to check for jars, as well as Dollar Tree (for a smaller Mason jar gift). You can also re-purpose a pretty jar you have around the house, or check your thrift store.

Then, simply print the FREE Mother’s Day printable gift tags on card stock paper and attach them to your jars with decorative ribbon or string. I’ve included tags in multiple sizes so you can use them on different sizes of jars.

It’s also worth mentioning that these tags would make a pretty gift topper or they could serve as a tag for any other gift you are planning for Mother’s Day!

3 different diy mother's day gifts in a jar on the table

Need some gift-in-a-jar inspiration?

I filled one jar with all kinds of fun ways for mom to pamper herself, such as different beauty and relaxation products and things I know she’ll enjoy! Another jar has summer essentials like a beach towel, sunglasses, flip-flops, and sunscreen. Finally, the last jar has a selection of pretty nail polish and supplies for the perfect manicure.

I used gift basket filling at the bottom of each jar, but that is definitely optional. And don’t forget the Mother’s Day printables for the attached gift tag!

Aw that’s so sweet! Thanks Babymair! ❤️🙌

I love this idea! Unfortunately some people do not share the same thoughts and enthusiasm about saving money and budgeting. I learned this hard way. I have a family member that doesn’t like when I purchase her gift at a discount or buy cards from dollar store (I honestly don’t know how she can tell this one) it takes the fun out of giving to her. I’m guessing she doesn’t think I love her unless I spend full price

    • Roks

      Ditto that

    • Ash

Stop buying for her. She would no longer be on my gift giving list.

      • Lori

        Exactly!

    • april

I’m sorry that’s happening to you. I get the same feeling from some of my family members. I might have a reputation for being a weirdo cheapskate at this point, but I ignore it. I still go out of my way to think of them and buy them a gift I think they’ll like. How much I pay for it shouldn’t matter.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh darn! That’s too bad. I love simple yet thoughtful gifts. Dollar Tree cards are way cute nowadays!

    • Ashley

Denise, maybe you shouldn’t get that family member anything for a year and see how they like not receiving anything. This sounds like teenage behavior!

    • Cristine

That’s sad, seems like a very ungrateful person.

      • Lisa

As a very frugal and fellow H2S follower myself, my friends/family have all realized that please get me NOTHING as opposed to something I would never use (other than give it to Goodwill) AND put the money they would have spent on me into a retirement account. After almost 27 years of marriage, even my spouse has come to realize, please get me nothing — I only want time with you. And my kids, they have both realized as well, please, do NOT get me/us anything for gifts… put that money into your retirement account. So I do not consider myself ungrateful — just practical and a realist. Too many people do not realize what they have/do not have financially. Go log into your Social Security Account and see how much money you will NOT be getting monthly. Entirely too many people feel that SS should support/sustain them in retirement — newsflash. SS was ever only meant to be a “supplement” to a retirement. Not to take away from this post, these are all cute ideas, but know your recipient as well.

I think it’s an individual choice. Some of my friends genuinely don’t care about getting a gift. They truly just value being thought of with a card or a note. I try to listen to what people like, need, or want so I can give them an applicable gift. I stopped expecting that same consideration so I just buy what I want. I mean, lest I sound ungrateful, I appreciate being thought of. But buying me clothes that are too small just because it was on sale or books by someone I don’t even like doesn’t make me feel special.

    • shop4mybabies

i have family that is the opposite…complains that i spent way too much and accuses me of lying if i say it was less than 10$ the result is the same i feel like it takes away from the thoughtfulness i put into thinking they would love that crockpot or scooter for their kids

      • PrincessMom

I have a “bonus mom” I love dearly and she’s even more frugal than I ! lol She will tell me I shouldn’t have gotten her a gift, she doesn’t want me spending the money, etc. so I always just give her a little something and tell her, “it was under $10!” (even when it’s not 😉
One year, I got her a sweater at the dollar store–it was actually $1!! So I saved the receipt to wrap up with the sweater. She LOVED it. Knowing that I only spent $1 on it made the gift that much better for her. She brags to people about how I find the most amazing deals. 🙂

        • Kim

I love that! A gift is about the thought you put into it, not how much you spent! 🙂

  3. ann

They should count their blessings that someone loves and cares about them enough to get them a gift. The best gifts are homemade!

  4. Cristine

My mom is so hard to buy for, I really like that first jar idea though, could be perfect for her. Thanks for the cute ideas!?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ah you’re so welcome Christine! Thanks for stopping by!

    • Terry

That jar idea is great. Just thinking of how many different personal jars you could make. Fun, economical and useful. That is a great office idea also. Put things that you can use while at work. Put your personal items in a colorful jar and everyone will want one of their own.

  5. M

Theoretically you could also do a movie night basket with popcorn, her favorite candies, maybe a blanket to cuddle with, moves and/or amc/regal gift card.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Nice gift idea- thx for sharing1

  6. Keesh

I love this idea. I do this for all occasions 🙂

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      YAY! Thanks Keesh!

  7. dealzgurl

H2S: can you share the size of the jars you used? I’m trying to get an idea of prices while I figure out the theme I want to use for my jars.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

The anchor hocking jars are linked from walmart in the post. The large 2 gallon measure 9.75 x 9.63 x 14.31 Inches.

  8. Lmb

Lina, this is such a GREAT IDEA!! I ❤️your posts! Keep them coming:) Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there🤗

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh yay! Glad you enjoyed and thanks so much!

  9. Dee

This would be a cute gift for someone you don’t know very well, but then why are you giving them a Mother’s Day gift? If this was what my family gave me, I would be gracious and then go cry somewhere private later. I would rather have a thoughtful card and nothing else, instead of a tumbler and nail polish. Just my opinion. I just think this gift is off for this holiday, but maybe for another one. I usually love all the ideas, but not this one.

  10. shpootsen45

Such a sweet idea! My mom will be visiting over Mother’s Day and this gift is small enough that she should be able to pack it in her luggage to take home! Thanks so much for the lovely idea! 😁❤️

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh thanks for sharing! I love that you can personalize it for her. Enjoy your time together!

  11. lori

Just an fyi – the anchor hocking jars are $24.99 online – not $14.99 🙁

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Lori! Sorry for any confusion. ❤️Be sure to check for that low price in store. Hoping you might find it at your location! 🥰

  12. Amy

The one with the Ella + Mila nail polishes would be $$$. But, I don’t know if it would “look” like much money. I love this idea though.

  13. Amani

I would love to mail out something like this. Does anyone know of plastic jars similar to this. I guess something like the red vines containers. That would definitely cost less in shipping. Thanks in advance for an6 suggestions.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh that’s a great idea! I would check HomeGoods or TjMaxx for one also. 🤗
