More information on the dangers of lead exposure…

Long term exposure to lead can cause various health issues. The severity depends on the level of lead in food, the age of the consumer, the amount consumed, and the frequency of consumption.

Those who are very young, pregnant, or have been exposed to lead previously may be more susceptible. According to the Mayo Clinic, lead exposure may lead to vomiting, joint pain, fatigue, infertility, miscarriage, memory problems, irritability, and more. High lead exposure in utero, infancy, and early childhood can even result in behavior difficulties, lowered IQ, and learning disabilities.

To be safe, stop using and discard any of the cinnamon products mentioned in this recall. Speak to a medical professional if you are feeling ill and are concerned about lead toxicity. You can also contact the FDA to make a report.

Applesauce products facing a recall in 2023 due to elevated lead levels

This recall is related to a previous one on applesauce products.

In 2023, the FDA issued a recall for cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products marketed to children. These products had elevated lead and chromium levels. The investigation into the cinnamon in these products led to this new recall. Fortunately, the ground cinnamon mentioned here contains much less lead than in the applesauce products.

The affected applesauce products are from WanaBana, Weis, and Schnucks. You can read more about this recall on the FDA website.
