You may have a worthless gift card you bought from Costco in your wallet!

Costco shoppers, heads up if you purchased discounted restaurant gift cards from Costco!

Synergy World, Inc., the company that managed these gift cards, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and as a result, Synergy Restaurant Gift Cards (both physical and eGift) are no longer redeemable as of February 1, 2026

Since gift card holders are considered unsecured creditors in bankruptcy cases, refunds aren’t guaranteed; however, some Costco locations have reportedly offered refunds on unused cards, though this seems to vary by store and there’s no official company-wide policy.

If you still have one of these gift cards, consider stopping by your local Costco or contacting customer service soon to see what options might be available.

Cool. Corporations steal money and ee can do nothing.

As a manager at Costco, I can confirm any gift cards purchased after 10/27/25 are to be given a full refund if any amount is left. Corporate sent every store the same email, so it is company wide. We were sent instructions on how to return and dipsose of the gift cards. You can return it, only if there is a balance left. Gift cards with a $0 balance will not be refunded.

So is it basically any restaurant gift card that was purchased at Costco? (I purchased several as Christmas gifts). And how are you verifying if there is a zero balance on the card? If the company is bankrupt and the cards hold no value anymore, will it still tell you the correct unused balance when you call the number on the back of the card?

My gift cards were purchased a couple years ago. Does that mean I won’t get any refund since it’s too old?

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You might try stopping by your local Costco or contacting customer service to see if they may be able to offer any help with the cards you have. ❤️

Thank you! I will do so because I got $75 in the cards…

How can I tell if my gift card is one of those affected? Will it say “synergy” on it?

You might try heading through the Synergy link above and then see if you can check your balance through the link near the bottom. ❤️
