Ever wondered what is a VPN and what do they do? I’ve got the answers and why I’ve been loving NordVPN!
A VPN is a virtual private network.
“VPN stands for ‘virtual private network’ — a service that protects your internet connection and privacy online. It creates an encrypted tunnel for your data, protects your online identity by hiding your IP address, and allows you to use public Wi-Fi hotspots safely.” – source NordVPN
There are so many reasons to consider a virtual private network, so I signed up for a VPN service with NordVPN, and it’s been so helpful in more ways than one! Before I tell you all the perks, let’s first talk about how you can save on it right now.
For a limited time, NordVPN is now offering 60% off 2-years of VPN services and anti-malware protection for just $78.96 for the first 2 years!
That’s only $3.29 per month, plus you’ll have a 30-day money-back guarantee!
In short, here are some reasons why a VPN is useful for your browser.
- Secure connection
- Bypass censorship
- Fast internet speed
- Threat protection against viruses
There are so many benefits I’ve experienced when it comes to NordVPN, so I’m here to note a few of the perks of having NordVPN, and many of them are reasons I wanted a virtual private network in the first place!
Here are some of the benefits to expect when signing up for NordVPN…
1. Top-notch security
NordVPN has a series of features designed to provide the most secure network. One WireGuard-based feature known as NordLynx allows us, the users, to enjoy the speedy WireGuard network with virtually zero privacy threats. Their site also has a knowledge-based blog that breaks down all useful NordVPN information in a simple, user-friendly manner.
Their HQ is based in Panama so it’s not part of any surveillance alliances. No government entity can ever force NordVPN to turn over your data.
Connect NordVPN to up to six devices or even connect it directly to your router so your entire network is covered. Even when you’re not connected to WiFi on your mobile device, you take this security with you on the go.
2. Fewer ads
We all have experienced the overwhelming, unwanted ambush of ads blocking a website’s content. Not only is it extremely frustrating, but it’s also a huge inconvenience and a little unsettling how specific they can be. Ever since using NordVPN, I’ve noticed I’m served significantly fewer ads, which is awesome! 👏
NordVPN has a feature known as Threat Protection, which actively blocks malicious and harmful ads, websites, and trackers. It also identifies any files infected with malware.
Even if I do see an ad, it’s not based on my search history the way it’s been before, and I easily consider this my solution to unwanted advertisements.
3. Exclusive content
There are quite a few countries that restrict access to services and websites like social media platforms, What’s App, and even Google. No matter where you travel, with NordVPN, you won’t have any limitations when it comes to accessing the internet. It offers over 5,300 servers in over 60 countries!
For everyday use, this means your access to your favorite entertainment just got a whole lot bigger. If you’re interested in watching shows other countries have access to that we don’t in the US, your VPN can change all that. For example, if you feel like bingeing It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia, switch your VPN country to the United Kingdom, and you’ll be able to watch all 15 seasons on Netflix, compared to it only being available on Hulu in the US. Pretty cool, right?
The same goes for if you’re traveling and are worried about not being able to watch your favorite shows you have access to at home. Simply connect to the IP of the US with your VPN, and enjoy!
4. Virus prevention and support.
Think about it. On a normal day-to-day basis, how much does your computer know about you? Every time you use an unsecured public network, you’re risking a potential hack on your passwords, store banking information, and other vulnerable information.
Can you afford to lose that in the blink of an eye? Nowadays, malware-ridden emails are getting more and more convincing, and anything as simple as one click can instantly download hundreds of viruses.
NordVPN seamlessly eliminates this from occurring with top-notch security. When your VPN is connected, your data goes through a secure “tunnel” that’s nearly impossible for hackers to invade.
One awesome feature is CyberSec, which shields us from unnecessary ads and any malicious websites that could potentially become a threat. It is such a relief to know if I can’t point out a potential virus myself, NordVPN will. 🙌
5. 24-hour support
Sure, a VPN of any type is beneficial, but as someone new to the VPN world, it’s extremely useful to have NordVPN’s 24-hour support team have my back and answer all of my questions. With their knowledgeable and helpful team, no one will be lost navigating the VPN world alone, not even a newbie!
If you use a VPN, share your favorite benefit in the comments. I’m just getting my feet wet with my NordVPN subscription and can’t wait to learn more!
It is a reliable safeguard and certainly better than doing nothing. You know the “all or nothing” mindset is so self-defeating. Inroads must start somewhere otherwise innovation/progress is never achieved. Remember, learning to ride a bike seemed difficult until you did it.
Well said, Stella. Thanks for your educational, open- minded response! 🙂
One thing about using a VPN to watch international shows, particularly in the UK…they have pretty savvy tracking and it is rare that I have been able to watch BBC.co.uk or Netflix UK without it eventually figuring out I am using a VPN to mask my location. So you may want to try it with a VPN for a bit to ensure it works for you.
I’ve been using NordVPN for a few months. I have the BBC iplayer and 99% of the time I have no problem viewing it. Once or twice, I got a message saying that it wasn’t available in my location, but I switched my connection on NordVPN to another location within the UK and was able to view iplayer content again.
We used VPN when we were living in China for 18 months. Back then , I was into Facebook and we could not get it unless you pay for VPNs. Also were able to read online what was going on around the world (for the most part) without much censorship.
