If you’re new to Amtrak, check out Hip2Save reader Elizabeth’s super helpful comment!

Just wanted to add my two cents on Amtrak – I’ve traveled with Amtrak many times, including across the country from Arizona to New York. Yes, the ticket purchasing process is kind of annoying. I found it easiest (and got the best deals) when splitting my trip into multiple parts. For example, I had to travel through Chicago, which is a major hub. It was way less expensive to buy tickets from Flagstaff to Chicago and then Chicago to Buffalo than it was to buy from Flagstaff to Buffalo. Also, if you’re flexible with dates, the prices can vary a lot. Overall, the website isn’t the most user-friendly and I’d recommend writing down each date/train combo that you try, so if you have to start over again, you know what you already looked at.

Superliners do not have private bathrooms in the roomettes. The roomettes are also TINY. I am very petite and traveled with my two kids (then 9 and 1) and we were okay in the roomette but had no room to spare. My 6’3” husband never would have made it two days in that space.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you purchase a roomette or a bedroom, meals are included (last I checked). That really adds up if you are traveling long distances. And the food is pretty good! One more thing – trains require some flexibility. They’re not always on time. It’s such an amazing way to travel through. You get to see parts of the country you don’t see from the road and it’s so much more relaxed than flying. I absolutely love it and can’t wait to travel on Amtrak again!

Traveling with the kiddos?

If you’re taking an Amtrak trip with the kiddos, they’ll get to experience the wonder of train travel while you enjoy getting to your destination without baggage fees, airport traffic, and all the additional stress of air travel with children.

Infants under the age of two (not occupying a seat) ride FREE with each fare-paying adult ages 18 and older. Children ages 2 – 12 are eligible to receive a 50% discount on the lowest available adult fare with each fare-paying adult. If you’re booking more kids than adults for your trip, any additional children will be booked as an “Adult” and the full adult fare will be charged.

No Amtrak promo code is required to receive the child and infant discounts, as they are automatically applied when adding qualifying travelers to your booking. This offer cannot be combined with the buy one, get one offer mentioned above.

Note that children ages 12 and under may not travel unaccompanied. They must travel with an adult who is at least 18 years old. Children ages 13, 14, and 15 years old may travel as unaccompanied minors under certain conditions. Head on over here for more information about purchasing tickets for children.
