Did someone say snack time?

Stocking up on your favorite snacks can get expensive, so it’s important to take advantage of snack deals! This Week’s Happy Friday Reader, Jana, went on the ultimate snack haul at a discount store known as Dirt Cheap!

If you don’t know, Dirt Cheap is a discount store that sells everything from clothes to snacks between 30% – 90% off! Jana was able to grab 85 snacks for $8.50 😱 including Oreos, Frosted Mini-Wheats, and more, and she’s sharing how.

You can check the Dirt Cheap store locator here to see if you have a location near you.

On a whim, I decided to stop in at Dirt Cheap, a chain store that discounts overage or out-of-season items from stores like Target.

oreos and cereal boxes

I found a section stocked with cereal, cookies, and even high-end all-natural cookies & snacks, etc. The items were newly expired but all marked for 10 cents each!

My shopping cart was mounded over when I went to checkout. I scored 85 items, all full boxes filled with individual items, for $8.50!!

Almost all of my clothes come from dirt cheap. They always have clothes and shoes from target, old navy, gap, department stores. It’s hands down my favorite store.

  2. Shoppingfan

I really like Dirt Cheap too even though it’s a drive away. I’ve been able to score really good things there, with a bit of searching!

  3. NubianGoddess

Interesting, I have never heard of this store.

  4. Kristy

Bummer, no stores near the northeast 🙁 I would have love to try this store.

  5. amanda-46

If I ever travel to one of the states where it it, it’ll be a destination!!

  6. Lori Carey

I wish there was one close to me! This looks like an awesome store.

  7. Stormy

OMG…there is one maybe 10 minutes from me! I am now FOR SURE going to be stopping by next week. I’ve heard of it, but have never been. Thank you!

Make sure you carve out time. It’s one of those stores you really have to look. Not bad actually a lot of fun but does take time. Good luck on your first treasure hunt @ Dirt Cheap!

  8. Tracey

None near me but I’ll have to tell my son in Texas to check it out when he is in the area of some of the stores. He is about 3 hours away from a couple of them, but everything is about 3 hours or more away in Texas haha! You got some great deals!!

We have a number of stores of this type in my area in SC but not that particular one. You can often find them by Googling ‘discount grocery store’. We don’t get things that cheap but we do get crazy cheap deals like boxes of Cascadian Farm snack bars 4 boxes for $1. We regularly get cases of yogurts in the little glass jars for $1, cases of hummus of 1.99, rolls of cookie dough for 50 cents, rolls of sausage for $1, Pepperidge Farms bread 6/$5, etc.

A coworker’s wife was able to find a ton of food items at $0.10 each, including gluten-free items. I thought I would check it out, even though the disarray of the store normally keeps me away. As a warning to those who don’t like disorganization, this is not the store for you – at least not the one in my local MS town. I went in and had to leave because of the filth on the floors. Ours has gone from just being completely disorganized to downright dirty. I ended up leaving without looking for the food deal.

Sincere question: do freeze what you buy? How can you eat that much expired food that quickly? Will check out stores when we travel to Texas for my daughter’s college graduation this spring.

I love to shop these kinds of stores so much that my kids bought me a magnet that says “expiration dates are for the weak” hahahaha!

      • Theresa R.

LOL – my new favorite quote.

    • rebecca

often, they are ‘best by’ dates, not actually expired. so a granola bar in a sealed plastic wrapper will truly taste the same a week and a half after the best by date.
if a person is packing lunches for 4 kids, plus each kid wants an after-school snack and a bowl of cereal for breakfast, you could easily go through this within 2 weeks and it will still taste fine and get used up.

    Any similar stores in Ohio?

  13. MICHELLE

Love these stores. And some are hit or miss on cleanliness/organization. I have 3 near me. Two are super clean and organized. The other looks like a bomb went off inside! But love the deals. I ride floats in Mardi Gras parade and St. Patrick’s day. I scored Easter grass for $.05 a bag and bought 400 to throw from the floats, and they were a hit!

  14. Debbie

I have been a Dirt Cheap fan since they opened.I even messaged Collin about the stores when she moved to Dallas.I know the stores are messy and unorganized, but hey,a treasure hunt requires a shovel, right? And digging for treasures is fun!If you go and find a prize, you will be hooked!🤗

  15. Judy

No cheap store in my area

  16. Beverlie

Wish there was one in California.
Can you buy online and have it delivered?

  17. Becky

The Dirt Cheap in Hot Springs, Arkansas is really bad. The deals are not good and the merchandise is very messy. I heard other states have better ones.

  18. Alex

I didn’t even click on this post but saw where in my email- my absolute FAVORITE place- I’m in Waco, TX and also get to visit other stores every now and then. I actually got tons of cans of almonds last week for $.10 each, but almost all of our clothes, shoes and SO much come from there. It does take work, but it always pays off for the bargains I find.

  19. Patti

Why would you buy so much food if it is recently expired? By the time you use it all, it is really expired. Not worth it to me even at 10 cents each.

    • Debbie

WHAT??? Donate food to food banks, homeless shelters, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Food Pantries, Missions…..shall I go on? Do you have any idea how many people have little to nothing and would appreciate free food for them and their kids???

    • Nae17

As someone posted earlier, many of these items are ones that have “Best By” dates, not true expirations. As long as they stay sealed an extra week to a couple months is not going change much! Plus if you pack kids lunches the items go quick!

  20. Shari

None at all in CA I’m 😞 we need some out here! It would be a big blessing and help for schools homeless shelters the rescue mission! Street people and mothers or Fathers living in their cars!
Please consider building some in LA
    San Marcos Chula Vista Oceanside
    San Diego

I shop the Dirt Cheap location, in Zachary, La. If you shopped, at this store, that $0.10 food wouldn’t be recently past the best by date. I had this post, in mind, when I visited today and there were $0.10 food items. But, as usual, it was the stuff they put on those red tables and the best by dates were back in August 2021. At this store, most of that red table stuff is past the best by date, when they first put it out. When it reaches $0.10, it’s usually way past the point where most people consider best by dates as a suggestion.

  22. Katie

I love Dirt Cheap! If you see a cart at the front of the store covered in plastic wrap, that means they’re selling the whole buggy for a cheap price. I got over $200 worth of items for $10. I bought 2 for $5 each and it was full of Target deals!

    • Stacy F (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Awesome tidbit! I had no idea they did the whole buggy thing!

  23. em512

We don’t have a dirt cheap, but we have a few discount grocery stores in my area in rural Minnesota. I’m able to get a lot of my organic, clean eating food for about 50-80% cheaper than whole foods or even target! It has been a game changer and I love that you never know what you’re going to find!
