The CDC recommends that you get your shot as soon as possible for maximum protection. It’s best to get the flu shot before the flu begins spreading in your community since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop and provide protection.

Luckily, flu prevention doesn’t have to cost a fortune! Read on to find out how and where you can save money on flu shots – and even possibly get them for free!

If you have health insurance or a public health insurance exchange, your health insurance is now required to pay for your flu shot without any co-pay when given by an in-network provider. Be sure to confirm with your insurance as some may offer free flu shots at specific locations only. If you are over the age of 65, Medicare Part B covers the cost of flu shots as well. If you’re a veteran and enrolled in the VA healthcare system, you should be able to get a flu immunization at a VA healthcare facility.

Don’t forget to check with your employer or university to see if they will be offering free flu shots and/or clinics this year. Many do offer this service because it’s in their best interest to keep you healthy!

Additionally, many county health departments offer free flu shots to those in need or without insurance. Many offer free flu shots to children and the elderly, and they often extend this service to everyone, especially during a bad flu season. Be sure to check your local county or city’s website for more information about their health program.

Although pharmacists can now administer the flu shot to children as young as 3 years old, we found that some still have an older minimum age requirement. We listed the age ranges as confirmed by phone with each location but found that the minimum age requirement can vary quite a bit, even within the same company. If you have young children, we recommend calling ahead to ensure that the pharmacist will give them a flu shot.

Note that the prices listed below reflect the cost of a seasonal quadrivalent (4-strain) flu shot, recommended for people between the ages of 6 months and 64 years of age. The high-dose flu shot recommended for persons 65 and older is often priced differently. Please contact your local flu shot provider to verify the cost in your area and whether or not you must pay in cash.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh cool! Thanks for sharing! Good to know!

I don’t see the $10 gift card offer at Publix.

    • notnuts50

No $10 gift card at my Publix, either.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Bummer! Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if that may vary.

  3. Mita

In SoCal, Albertsons is giving you a 10% off groceries coupon if you get the flu shot.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the heads up, Mita!

if you are looking for the flu shot without insurance, don’t forget to check GoodRX (free), they will get you 25-50% off of these prices. the drug is called Quadrivalent

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks for the helpful tip!

    • CateM

This is what i did. Paid around $26 at walmart after the GoodRx discount.

  5. Kim

This is helpful, thank you. Note for uninsured, the pricing for Costco “reflects Costco Member Prescription Discount card.” GoodRx is great!

My free target flu shot came with a 5$ off at target 👏

  7. ambersteph

    Walgreens gave $5 coupon

  8. Shawn

Costco is $25 without a membership.

  9. Debbi

seems like your county health department is the only place free without health insurance.

I went to Costco and received both the flu shot and Omicron booster and paid NOTHING. I’m not a member, filled out their online form completely, reserved a spot and waited maybe 5 minutes. I do have insurance so I included the information on their online form; agai, I paid nothing for either shot. Had I made an appt. at one of my in network facilities, I would have paid a $20 co-pay. This is not an isolated incidence either, I have been getting a free flu shot through Costco for years.

One more thing, for free flu shot please check out your local public health agencies (Dept of Public Health) they do conduct flu clinics annually and shots are on a first come, first serve basis. This is particularly helpful for the elderly, uninsured and undocumented. We are all in this together. Please stay safe, be well (for yourself, your loved ones and your community)

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh wow! Thanks for the tip and for letting us know you didn’t have a fee. 🤗❤️I wonder if that may vary. I still find a starting price of $19.99 at Costco.

      • Amy

Same for me. I have insurance and got both the flu and Covid booster at Costco for no charge at all. Took approx. 10 min since there were a few pharmacy customers there ahead of me.

        • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

          Awesome! Thanks, Amy! 🙌

    • Tricia

If you have insurance you can likely get the flu shot free at any pharmacy, not just Costco. The $20 fee at your doctor’s office is probably for the office visit, not the vaccine. Covid vaccines are still free for everyone as they are not allowed to charge for them at this time (may change in the future). Insurance can be billed for administrative costs but these cannot be passed on to the customer at this time.

I heard that Target is not doing a coupon this year for flu shots

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was able to confirm this with customer service. That detail has been removed. 🥰

I paid $26 at Walgreens using Goodrx & they gave me $10 Walgreens rewards, which I just used to buy some “house” Halloween candy!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

SWEET! Thanks for the heads up on what you scored from Walgreens!

Yes. If you are a Rewards Member look for an email about the $10 rewards. The offer is only through 9/30 though. I would expect though they would come up with another reward for October.

        • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

          Thank you! 🥰

  13. JenniferS

Thank you JD827, I just called Walgreens customer service about this $10.00 reward. I went in for my flu & COVID booster yesterday but received no rewards. I came here to check to see if there any member rewards w/ flu shots from Walgreens this year. This has helped me out.
