Unlimited Starbucks refills? Yes, please!

We are bumping this post up for those of you who may have missed it!

Did you know that Starbucks Rewards Members can score FREE refills of brewed coffee (iced or hot!), Cold Brew or iced or hot tea with any beverage purchase!

This is an awesome reward perk for those of us who head into Starbucks and plan to hang out for a while to visit with friends, enjoy a book, have a study session, get in a few hours of work, or just enjoy some time away from the regular home or work environment!

How to score your free Starbucks refill(s):

  • Become a Starbucks Rewards Member by signing up hereit’s free
  • Order ANY beverage in-store or via mobile order
  • Enjoy your original beverage in store – this is important as you must not leave the restaurant or you will forfeit the refill perk!
  • Take your empty cup to the register
  • Order any cold brew coffee or hot/iced coffee or tea
  • Scan your Starbucks Rewards Card
  • Enjoy your free refill! Easy peasy!

And the best part – you can do this process as many times as you want as long as you stay inside the Starbucks store. You cannot leave and come back later OR take advantage of this offer via the drive-thru.  Once you leave the store, your visit has ended and any new coffee or tea refill thereafter is considered a new purchase.

PLUS, if your Target has a Starbucks cafe inside, you can enjoy the free refills perk there, too!

Hip Tip: Order your beverage before shopping and grab your refill before you leave! So smart!

Some things to keep in mind…

  • Your refill drink needs to be the same size as the drink purchased. So if you order a Grande, your refill will be Grande.
  • The refills do not include lemonade or iced tea infusions, such as the Strawberry Acai Lemonade Starbucks Refreshers.
  • The refills do not include handcrafted beverages, such as the frappuccinos and espresso drinks.
  • There is no limit on the number of refills or the length of the visit.
  • Starbucks Rewards Members of any level will receive a free refill. If you are not a registered Starbucks Rewards Member, you can still enjoy a refill for 50¢.
  • For more information, head here or check the Starbucks Rewards Terms.

wait,, so i can order a grande machiatto and then get a cold brew as a refill? or is it order a cold brew and then get cold brew refills free as a member?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Yes, you can order a grande machiatto and then get a cold brew as a refill! Any drink will get you free refills of tea, coffee or cold brew! Hope this helps, serenity he!

      • serenity he

        thank you!!!!

        • Amy Williams

Yes, I have done this 3 times ever since Hip2Save posted about it! I order a venti iced latte and sit and work on my computer while I am in the store… Then, I get a FREE venti cold brew and take it home to put in the fridge for the next day! Thanks Hip2Save!

    • Wren

Erica, I think it *used* to be only for Gold… 🧐

    • Qgirlfriend

I tried this last weekend. Ordered a chai latte iced, and tried to get an iced tea refill and they said no.

    • Qgirlfriend

Thanks. I’ll refer to this if I decide to try again. Not sure if I will as I felt embarrassed for asking…they made me feel like I was trying to scam them out of a free drink. ☹️

      • Stephanie

Wow I do this all the time and the baristas have never acted that way to me… both where I moved from in Virginia where I frequently visited all 5 Starbucks in town and now that I’ve moved to Boston… no one has ever questioned me on it or made me feel weird about it.

  2. AJ

I do this all the time at our Kroger Starbucks! I’m just an iced coffee drinker and there’s never any hassle…love it

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Great!

  3. babymair

Thx Collin and team. I didn’t realize you could do this .You guys are the best .!!keep up the good work and God bless.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks so much, babymair!

  4. Mary

I order iced green tea as many times as I need while working on hw at Starbucks Target, love this perk!!!!

  5. jake hop

could you do this with a reusable water bottle
or refill the bottle then go back in line for another drink and so on if you want a gallon LOL

    • Jennifer

That’s a good way to get this perk removed.

  6. Mari

I foresee a problem with this at Kroger and target….. does someone have the link where Starbucks actually says you can get a refill on any drink?

    • Suzanne

This always works at my Kroger but NEVER at Target. I’ve contacted Starbucks customer service, and they don’t seem to care.

      • Lisa JP

This doesn’t work at any of our Target locations or any of our Kroger locations.

    • Jennifer

Those aren’t “real” Starbucks, so there could be a difference there. They’re just licensed. That’s why the drinks aren’t usually as good either. They don’t get corporate training.

      • Stephanie

Actually not true. My sister managed a Starbucks in a target. Not only was it a “real” Starbucks, they had to go to corporate training and they honor the refill policy.

  7. realtorjorge23

Thank you for the life changing “Hip Tip”.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re so welcome! Enjoy!

    • C varvarigos

I asked for a refill and was charged $1.00 for the same coffee. Barista said it was because it was french vanilla

  8. Melissa

Does anyone know if this works in the Disney parks Starbucks locations?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Good question! You could always give them a call to double check. Hope that helps!

    • Melissa H.

This hasn’t worked for me before at Disney, even though I can use my Starbucks app to pay.

    • Maggie

I don’t know if this works inside the park but it worked in Downtown Disney.

    • ~Ann~

Disney parks Starbucks don’t even let you redeem your birthday treat. =(

      • Sara

You can only redeem stars/birthday treat at the Disney Springs West Side location since it is the only corporate owned store on Disney World property. You can still earn stars at the five locations that are Disney owned.

    • Jennifer

Not likely, as they are licensed stores, not corporate like the stand alone locations.

  9. Jamie

Actually, I order an iced tea (passionfruit tango) and add a refresher BASE (mango dragonfruit), and I can make the ratio whatever I want. So I can get free refills on my refreshers by having them enter it in on the computer as an iced tea with a refresher as a base! So if you wanted 3/4 mango dragonfruit and 1/4 passionfruit tango, it would still qualify for free refills!

    • Amanda

That’s awesome that your store does this but they shouldn’t be able to. I work for Starbucks and this is ONLY for teas with water. They shouldn’t be doing it for teas with lemonade, milk, infusions or refresher base. Just an FYI in case a barista says they cannot do it! 🙂

  10. Sarah

At Target you have to pay with your Starbucks or Target app to take advantage. They scan your app when you refill as a free promotion.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the helpful comment, Sarah! Good to know!

    • Mei

I always pay with my app, but you still have to make sure that the barista knows how to charge. I have been charged full price for refills, only to have them give me a blank look when I tell them it should be free!

  11. Michele

I agree. Don’t care for Starbucks enough to support it.

  12. Courtney

Yup I’m done with Starbucks too for that reason among others

  13. Alex

Can I get iced coffee or cold brew WITH flavors- like white chocolate, caramel, etc as my refill?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

If you get a standard syrup like classic or caramel it should be covered. Flavors like white chocolate are considered a sauce and are an extra charge. You could get your free refill and pay for the extra charge on the sauce. I would check with your barista on what flavors would be free. Hope this helps, Alex!

  14. Lisa

While I know there are people who can afford to drink their calories, I prefer to eat mine! 🙂 Good for those who like Starbucks though. It’s like when we go on a cruise, I can totally afford any drink package, but hey, I’m eating my way through my vacation! I’ll worry about the calories later.

    • Tia in FL

Iced coffee with almond milk & 2 Splenda is like 50 calories. Everyone has the image of the high-calorie drinks in their head.

    • Leslie

I get cold brew or iced coffee black or MAYBE with a splash of almond milk. My typical Starbucks order is virtually no calories or sugar. Just saying!

    • Heather

Iced coffee with nothing added has zero calories. 😁 That’s my go-to.

    • MommySpendsLess

Unsweet iced tea is virtually 0 calories as well and my favorite non alcoholic drink. I need to confirm that that’s also the case with Starbucks shaken teas.

  15. Taryn

I usually do this with iced tea as the original drink and then iced tea as a refill especially at Target or Fred Meyer. So, if I buy an iced tea (what I normally get) I could get a cold brew refill even though the cold brew costs more than the original drink? What if I use 50 points to get a hot coffee? Could I then get a refill of cold brew? I’m so interested in this!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Yes, you can! It doesn’t matter what the original drink is, Taryn!

    • Slgomez

Maybe but remember you’ll be using the same cup for your refill.

  16. json

There are shady people in every profession, not just cops!

  17. Rebecca

My local Dunkin Donuts does this as well, but sadly they all don’t.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh interesting! Thanks for sharing, Rebecca! I’ll have to check for that at my Dunkin!

  18. Nydia

Awesome! This is great to know.

    • Nydia

I forgot to say, thank you!

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

        You are SO very welcome!

  19. Jordan

What if you get the sweet cream cold foam cold brew? Will it just be a refill of the cold brew without the foamy goodness?

    • Jordan

Any thoughts about the cold foam??

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Jordan! I did speak with customer service. They did say you should receive the foam on your refill. You could always double check with your location to be certain. Hope this helps!

  20. Jen

I disagreed with a post in a short and civil way and had my reply deleted while other opinionated posts remain up, so my last question is

Would this deal work for iced chai lattes?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Jen, you can order a chai latte as your original drink, but that would not qualify for the free drink since it’s a latte. Hope this helps!

    • MamaBear

I’ve noticed a bunch of comments got deleted. Why bother then?

    • KO

You could get a chai tea latte as first drink, but refills would not be latte. You could get a chai tea refill I think…and add creamer to it yourself after it sits awhile? Not sure if that would taste ok or not? Might need to add sweetener too?

    • Jennifer

If you held every massive company responsible for what a couple of employees did, you wouldn’t have anywhere to shop. 🙄 Get over it.

  21. Amanda

Not every barista is this way. I work for Starbucks and would never do that as well as many other baristas. Don’t let this ruin your love for Starbucks! It’s really a great company. We have quarterly trainings to help us be better people and i know this will come up in our next training!

  22. Laura

And yes, I would rather pay $3.50 for a box of 100 teas at a grocery store than support Starbucks with ONE cup of tea for $3.50, even if it comes with a “free” refill. Note: it’s triple overpriced to begin with. 😉

  23. Allison M.

I’ve been doing this for years! Love it! One of our local Starbucks is inside a 3-story mall. We usually start there, get a drink, walk some, get a sweet tea refill, repeat. 😍

  24. Ger

So would this work ok coconut caramel macchiato? 😋

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

You can order that your original drink and then refill tea, coffee or cold brew, Ger!

  25. riss

I’ve been doing this for years! I thought everyone knew about it.

  26. Erica

I thought this was only for gold?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

It appears to be for all Reward Members. Hope that helps!

  27. R

Personally I’m sure it was the decision of one silly person(management, whatever) at one Starbucks. I won’t punish the whole establishment for this. And I believe Starbucks did apologize?

    • Jennifer

      This.

  28. Stephanie

Would this work on iced chai teas?!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Stephanie! You could always call ahead to your location to be sure. Hope that helps!

  29. Amy

Did this change recently? I thought the free refills were only brewed (hot) or iced coffee, not cold brew.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Amy! If not available for you previously, it seems you can now grab FREE refills of brewed coffee (iced or hot!), Cold Brew or iced or hot tea with any beverage purchase. Hoping that helps!

    • Amy Williams

Hi Amy! I’ve gotten free Cold Brew refills as recently as last Friday, so it works at my local Starbucks!

  30. Nashville Mama

The title to that was a BIT misleading. Nothing new to advertise since the coffee/tea free refills have been a perk for rewards members for years.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! Thanks so much for the feedback. Although this is not necessarily a new perk, we felt that it was worth calling out on its own to ensure every Rewards member can take advantage of the offer when they are hanging out at Starbucks.

  31. Andrea

Anyone know if the nitro cold brew would qualify?

  32. Jordan

What about the sweet cream cold foam cold brew? If I brought it up for refill would they put the cold foam on as well??

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yes! I did speak with customer service and they said that should qualify, however you may want to check with your location first before heading out. Hope this helps!

  33. shop4mybabies

to clarify..i only drink their iced teas, usually just black with a bit of sweetener, so that would certainly qualify..but i can’t get the blueberry flavoring and then refill with the blueberry flavoring correct?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You could always call in to your location to be certain! Hope that helps!

  34. Tinny

Thanks for including that refills are only 50 cents without rewards card. I didn’t want a card to deal with. I really thank you for including that golden gem of info .

    • Klaw

You just scan your app, you don’t have to have a physical card to worry about keeping track of. 🙂

  35. Jeannette

Does this work at Barnes & Nobles that have a Starbucks?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Jeannette! Good question! I believe that is a Barnes & Noble cafe that serves Starbucks. You could always call in to you location to be sure. Hope that helps!

      • Anj

        No they don’t do refills

    • Slgomez

I don’t think Barnes and Noble do this. They don’t accept Starbucks gift card as payment.

  36. Catherine

I’ve been doing this for years and for some reason I have to point it out to the baristas every time since moving to Houston making me seem really annoying. Is this not something they teach in training? I showed the policy to a Starbucks worker at target and she still did not want to honor it because I had gotten a refresher first. The only reason I ever get Starbucks is because I know I can justify the price by getting free refills.

    • Amanda

I think this is not commonly known with many baristas… my dad is a Starbucks fanatic and has known about this for a while, but they always give him a hard time. He has been told it will cost 50cents, they will do it this time but not another time, and just flat out refused….

  37. Elle

You can also get a $.10 discount if you use a reusable cup (or a competitor’s paper cup)!

  38. NV2007

Thanks for posting, H2S! I wouldn’t have known this otherwise! I rarely sit at SBux, I almost always have a kid with me when I’m stopping there. But it’s nice to know if I have time to go there to work quietly at night or something.

Though I kind of wish SBux would stop offering all of these “perks” (and the BOGO days) and just lower their prices altogether. I would go more often if their prices weren’t so high for a hand crafted beverage.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You’re very welcome! Thanks so much for the feedback! Hoping you will be able to enjoy this tip real soon!

  39. Lynn

    Hi,
Do they require you to bring back your old cup so they can wash and reuse for your free refill? 🙂

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Lynn! You will get a new cup when you bring back the old one. 😊

      • Sara

I did this once in Target. They just rinsed out the original cup.

        • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for letting us know how it has worked for you, Sara! Good to know!

      • Slgomez

I don’t think they’ll give you a new cup for refills they always use the same cup for me. They always ask me to take off the lid then refill the same cup.

        • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks a bunch for the helpful feedback!

  40. nickweiss

So after 100 refills you mean I’ll actually get my money’s worth!

    • Rebekah Hill

Dose it work in Target? Like if I don’t leave target can I get a refill on my way out??

  41. MFH

Hi I am scrolling thru and wasn’t sure if this would work on a nitro drink ?

  42. Shalon

This needs to be offered at Barnes and Nobles I’m in there for a while

    • Patty

The cafes in B&N are not Starbucks. They simply brew Starbucks coffee.

  43. cici

you know what. some Starbucks rejected my refill, one was in Target and others are Starbucks stores. I even talked to the manager of Starbucks in Target. The reason they told me is I can refill iced coffee or iced tea if the first drink i order is brewed (hot) or iced coffee or iced tea. i always order iced espresso and just want to refill iced coffee. i also called the customer service about this question. Their answer was: any “beverage”, means only iced or brewed coffee or iced tea, so that i can get my refill!!! The “beverage” is not all the drinks they sell. if i order espresso or frappuccino, there is no way to refill. But, of course, some store were very nice to refill to me and didn’t ask what my first order was.

    • Jennifer

I’d call corporate. That’s for sure not their policy. You can order whatever you want as your first beverage.

  44. Patty

At last something generous for loyal customers. When you compare their repeat customer rewards program to Chick fila THERE’s NO COMPARISON! Starbucks makes so much money I don’t understand why they are not a little more generous with loyal customers.

    • Jennifer

      Buy their stock. 😁

  45. Linda Mather

Not true about not leaving the sbux location, as recently I’ve been doing just that, returning later with same cups & still scoring my refills

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the feedback on how it has been working for you, Linda! Good to know!
