Did you know that Herbal Essences products are in fact part of the Clairol Family of brands? I actually didn’t know this. If you go to the Clairol site, you can see what I’m talking about. The top tabs have all the Clairol family of brands listed including Herbal Essences, Natural Instincts + More! So now why am I telling you this? Well, check out the email I received from reader, Nancy:

Hi Collin. Just wanted to let you know of a great deal I just found out about tonight while doing some transactions at my fav Rite Aid. 1. Kathryn

Anyone know what this coupon looks like? I dont know what I would have organized it under…..

    • Ashley

It looks like a hair dye coupon…has pics of boxed hair dye on it. hope this helps lol

    • Rebecca

Kathryn, I understand it has a pic of Natural Instincts and Nice & Easy on it.

      • Kate

Well I used it on the Walgreen’s deal last week for $30 of P&G and $10 RR the Natural Instincts was on sale and decided I wanted to be closer to my original color…Nutmeg. The color was $5.50, so I bought them for $3.50 each and got some other items, which I can’t remember anymore because saving and shopping has become a blur! I wish I had some more of those. I used to throw away coupons that I don’t use, but now I send them to the be donated to Military Families (they are allowed to use these for 6 months pass the expiration date). I have $1/2 coupon on the Herbal Essence but no Rite-Aid near me and CVS deal is good but not great like $2/1. 🙂

  2. Rebecca

    Awesome!

  3. barb

    I issed a P&G insert on 11/7??????????? Now I am depressed

    • Sarah

      I did too!

    • Sarah

It’s the one from 10/31. It’s in there; I just looked.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Try looking in your 10/31 P&G insert. Thats where I found mine. 🙂

      • Collin

        Oh oops!! 🙂

    • Princess P

call your local newspaper, I went to mine and was able to buy that weekends paper with the coupons in it. YEAH!!! I hope this helps.

      • Alice

I’dove to try this. Did they sell you newspapers at the discount?
Did you just call the newspaper directly?

        TIA

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i wish i could use this coupon… but herbal essences is tested on animals, so I don’t buy from them 🙁

    • Rachael

ALL of Procter and Gamble still tests on animals…. Pantene, Charmin, Bounty, Cover Girl, Pantene, Aussie, Crest, Oral B, Gillette, Duracell, Braun, Herbal Essences, Clairol, Iams, Bounce, Downy, Tide are part of Procter and Gamble’s empire. Sometimes it is hard to avoid buying from them; however, the one thing I refuse to buy from them is IAMS food. I know of many disturbing studies that have been done about them. I know how you feel…. It’s sad that a retail empire of this magnitude cares more about money to be made, than changing a practice that is beginning to be abandoned because it’s inhumane. 🙁 Very sad.

      • kay9pets

And Iams is crappy food anyway….much better food at the same/better price.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I agree with you…but if I make money buying it..I’ll “buy” it. I won’t give them my money, though.

      • anna

Thank you for contacting us regarding Iams nutrition studies using animals. Andrew Rowan, the Executive Vice President for Operations of The HSUS, was on the Iams external Advisory Board for the first two years and was actively engaged in discussions with Iams aimed at responding to public concerns about the use of animals in laboratory nutrition studies. Dr Rowan was satisfied that Iams had made substantial progress in addressing the organization’s concerns during his time on the Advisory Board. The issues we raised and Iams’ response are listed below.

We asked Iams to commit to ending the feeding trials that were done solely to satisfy AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) labeling requirements that the pet food is wholesome and nutritious. They agreed to do so and wrote and informed AAFCO of this decision. They also wrote to other pet food companies requesting them to take the same action. This new policy is now becoming evident on pet food as they develop and use new packaging.

Iams agreed to limit their study protocols so that the techniques used would be no more invasive (e.g. taking a blood sample) than those used in a human outpatient clinic.

Iams committed to ensuring that all the animals used in their nutrition studies would enjoy life-time care in a home or in a home-equivalent environment once the study was completed. Nearly all the animals that now complete studies are being adopted into private homes with the remainder going to a purpose-built retirement facility.

Iams agreed to become a leader in promoting the welfare of all dogs and cats especially those in shelters and other non-home environments. The company is actively investigating and studying enrichment opportunities for dogs and cats in a kennel/shelter environment and is sharing the results of those studies with shelters and other relevant organizations.

Most significantly, Iams agreed to pursue the eventual elimination of animals in laboratory-based nutrition testing. Today, a substantial majority of the dogs and cats involved in Iams nutrition studies are “in-home” animals and Iams continues to press its scientists to develop approaches so that the company can reach its goal of 100% “in-home” studies.

Periodically, other issues have arisen over Iams’ use of other laboratory animals such as mice, rabbits and chickens. We have found the company to be responsive to the concerns that we have raised and to be committed to the development of alternatives for all its nutrition studies. In conclusion, we are pleased with the progress that has been made and with the company’s commitment to continued progress in this area.

        Yours sincerely

  5. Colleen Steves

I tried to use this coupon at my local Rite Aid toward Herbal Essences today, and they would not take it. Now I am mad!

    • RNcarrie75

Mine wouldn’t push it through either! I’m not a fan of that manager…she’s always like “if it doesn’t scan, it’s not the right coupon!”

  6. Julie

Thanks so very much for this tip. I plan to use these coupons on Thanksgiving.

  7. Brenda

Awesome, thank you so much, I have been throwing away the hair color coupons, but not anymore! P.S. I found them in the coupon trash! Thanks

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am wishing I had a “coupon trash”…I throw away all the hair color ones too, oh well.

      • ariana

keep them! I don’t color my hair either but I do like oVerage & FREES, I often find 75-90% off on haircolor at CVS that I use as fillers then donate them to my local church.

  8. Amanda

IT WORKS!!! I already did this tonight at my RA and it went fine, no beeps:)

    • Joni

Really? I did it and it said “no matching items”. What type did you get? Maybe they is a certain kind that works with no beeps.

  9. Lisa

There is also a $1 off coupon in the P&G Everyday Savings booklet (over $110 in P&G savings) that was received when you purchased X amount in P&G products. Anyway, if you have this booklet then you can get this item for free.

  10. Linda

I’m sorry to ask this question, but was there a P&G insert on 11/7? I don’t have one, nor do I remember the coupon preview indicate there would be a P&G insert.

    • Linda

Never mind …. notice the comment above about 10/31. Thanks.

  11. Emily

Hey, can anyone tell me if it beeps? at my local cvs, we have self checkout counters, they’re amazing! you scan your products, and then scan your coupons, and you don’t have to worry about there being a cashier who doesn’t like coupons, because YOU’RE your own cashier!!! It’s amazing, I love it!

    • Beth

I used this at CVS today with no beeps.

      • Kate

No beeps at CVS for me either 🙂

    • Selene

Man! That’s so nice! I wish we had self-scan at CVS here.

  12. Cheryl D.

Does anyone know how many times you can do this deal at Rite Aid this week and still get the UP’s?

    • Kathryn

that would be good to know if there is a limit, because i wanted to roll get more of this and huggies 🙂

    • RNcarrie75

I bought four of the Aussie products and got all four UPR. Going back for Herbal essence with the clariol coupon!! schweet!!

      • Megan

Got 6 today and all the UPs printed!

    • Charity

I done the Herbal Essence 9 times today and got Up Rewards with all of them. I had already bought 3 on Sunday. So, I have 12 shampoos and conditioners and received $24 in Ups!

  13. Kelly

I have two of these coupons. If I use buy two bottles and use two of the coupons will I get two $2 UP rewards. Or is the limit one? Has anyone gotten more than one $2 UP on this?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I bought three Herbal Essences Shampoo today and got three 2 dollar ups.

      • Craig

The only time you are limited to the UPs are if it CLEARLY states a limit in the ad/hang tag etc. If not, your can buy as many in same transaction and get each one!! Sweet aagh?!!

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Not always…I have bought stuff that only gave 1 up and no limit was printed on the sale flyer.

      • Brenda

Did you do one or 2 transactions?

        • Selene

I find Rite Aid different from Walgreens. At Walgreens you can do many transactions because they don’t use a card. But at Rite Aid it doesn’t matter if you do multiple transactions or one, because you use the Wellness+ Rewards card, so they know who you are anyway. I have bought additional quantities in separate transactions and did not get the +Up Rewards, even though there is NO stated quantity limit.

  14. Melissa

How many can we buy in one transaction to get the up reward, only 1? or can we purchase more than 1 and still get the up reward for each?

    • Craig

      see my above post. lol

    • RNcarrie75

You can purchase as many as your want in one transaction and the UPR will all print out. Or at least they all SHOULD print out.

  15. afey E

Some of my friends said when the coupon was scanned it came up as “Item not found” I haven’t tried it myself….I’m scared to. i might try at CVS since they are nicer..

  16. amanda

If you use multiple coupons does anyone know if you will get multiple up rewards

  17. Flo

In the $110 P&G saver book, there are 3 coupons for Clairol, but they specifically state “hair color.” So, do they work on the Herbal Essence? There are also 3 $1.00 coupons in that booklet for Herbal Essence or Aussie.

    • ipreferpublix

Well, no. If it says hair color, it’s only good on hair color. Wording on the coupon is the end all, be all and should be followed.

The reason the 10.31 q is acceptable is because it states it is good on any “Clairol Family product”. Meaning, anything produced by Clairol.

      • Selene

Technically the shampoo and conditioner are still not part of the Clairo Family. I went to the Clairo website and saw the top banner of products, and the Herbal Essense listed there is “Herbal Essense COLOR” and if you go to the “All Products” Page, it’s only the Herbal Essense hair colors listed. So I do believe this coupon is intended for Hair Color products only. But if it works at the register, it’s not our problem.

        • michelle

actually i think they are part of the family because it says clariol right on back of the bottle.

  18. Mahru

Could someone explain me what Ecb is? Thank youuu

    • Sarah

Extra Care Bucks, CVS offers these when you buy certain products, they are essentially a $x coupon for your next purchase. HTH

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They are pretty much an up…but for cvs….only thing is ecbs have longer expiration date.

  19. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I bought 3 at RA using the 1.00 off from the P & G booklet. 3 of the 2.00 up printed no problem.

  20. nicole

it came up item not found for me today but the cashier pushed it through.

  21. Rachael

They actually all belong to Procter and Gamble, so even Pantene could be considered a
“Clairol Family” product, I would think.

    • ipreferpublix

No, sorry, not accurate. There are different branches of P&G which manufacture different products. Just because P&G owns Clairol, who produces Herbal Essences and various hair colors, and P&G also owns Pantene; does not mean Clairol produces Pantene.

That’s not how it works. It just means P&G is the parent company of all the different branches.

  22. aw

I think Ecb means Extra Credit bucks like that of Rite aid up rewards or Walgreens register rewards.

  23. Sarah

NOO, I just used a $1/1 HE coupon at CVS tonight. And they have a limit of 1. =( Hope others can use this.

  24. Linda

Thanks for this comments section! I’m going to try this deal with one coupon tomorrow, and then see what my receipt says about how many of the deal I can do.

I’m saving my $1 off Herbal Essences coupon from the P&G coupon booklet for the Wags Black Friday sale starting on the Friday after thanksgiving and running through Sunday of that week. 🙂 They will have HE products on sale for $2.49 with $1.50 Register Reward. Then I’ll use my $1 coupon, and get it for free.

If you google “Walgreens Black Friday” you’ll come up with deals others have posted, or kind of fuzzy and cropped pictures of the ad.

    • Amanda

CVS has a great 3 day thanksgiving sale starting on Thursday 11/25 and they have Herbal Esssnces on sale for 3.99 and get 3.99 in Up!!
so when you use a coupon it will be a moneymaker also!!!!

  25. coralie

thanks colin for posting and thanks to all the awesome readers who like to help others by alerting you of deals like this!

  26. Janky

the CVS I went to did not accept it. Have to go with the 0.5 c off coupon in RP#2.

  27. Heatherili

This worked for me at Rite Aid. I bought 2 bottles of Herbal Essences and used 2 coupons. Worked fine. No beeps and got my 2 UPs back 🙂

  28. ipreferpublix

Warning: some RA stores have newer register software and at these stores, your q will not beep. Stores with older software – beep city. And since there’s a picture of hair color? Well, let’s just say, you might have problems with this.

Just be aware going in. Might want to stick with CVS with this particular q, where noe beeps have been reported.

    • Anne-Marie A

my store must have the older software because the register beeped and the cashier wouldn’t push it through. it said no match found.

  29. Kristen

Is there somewhere on the Herbal Essences bottle that says it’s a Clairol product? Yesterday the manager at Rite Aid came over when I was using so many coupons and told me that coupon fraud is a serious issue and they can lose their jobs over it. Basically just assuming that because I’m using coupons I’m a thief. Now I’m afraid to try this!

  30. Lisa

On the Herbal Essencs bottle it says Clairol on the back of the label on top of where it says Herbal Essances.
I tried to use it and my store said no. That was before I looked at the bottle and saw that it says Clairol right on the bottle.

  31. blkberrydiamond

I see i have to do some hunting in the burn pile for these coupons. Thanks for the tips.

  32. lisa

    Thanks Collin.

  33. Selene

I will try it once at CVS but I am not convinced they’ll let me. Technically the shampoo and conditioner are NOT part of the Clairo Family. I went to the Clairo website and saw the top banner of products, and the Herbal Essense listed there is “Herbal Essense COLOR” and if you go to the “All Products” Page, it’s only the Herbal Essense hair colors listed, and not shampoo or conditioner. So I do believe this coupon is intended for Hair Color products only. I will NOT try to use at RiteAid for sure. Every time when I pull out a coupon (even for the specific product with the product pictured), they get all defensive and nasty.

  34. Deb

A tip for those of you having to hunt for these specific Q’s-
file all your inserts intact and only clip as you need. You’ll always have the inserts this way-having never thrown them away.
I’ve learned from experience to never throw any Q’s away. My inserts are filed by the month in boxes under a bed in a spare bedrm.

I did try the binder system years ago when I began-got to be wayyyyyy too much unnecessary clipping & the binder was overwhelming & heavy.
    Just works for me…

  35. julies

I am all for testing the waters and will try out things, and even though I think my store is pretty awesome about taking coupons I do find this coupon to NOT be acceptable to what is being bought (shampoo/cond). The webpage specifically only mentions hair color so I really think we need to step into the ‘ethics’ department here….I am all for free stuff and love a good deal just like the next guy. I even cut out all the coupons and was excited to use it based on what was on here, but then i went to the site and i think that using it is not how it was intended to use therefor I will not be.

    • Chandra

The bottles of Herbal Essences DO say Clairol on them though.

    • laura

HE shampoo and conditioner are pictured on the main page though.

  36. Christi

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to save these coupons for the Thanksgiving weekend sales at CVS and Walgreens. 🙂 At CVS they are $3.99 get $3.99ECB Limit 2 and at Walgreens they are $2.50 get $1.50 RR.

  37. Tracy

Used at CVS this morning. THe cashier told me the coupon was for haircolor only, pointing to the pictures on the coupon. I countered that the wording says “Clairol Family” and showed her the Clairol on the Herbal Essence bottle. She begrudgingly said she would over-ride the coupon when it beeped…but Lo and Behold – it did NOT beep. Ha. Anyway, I managed to use it but the cashier was frustrating to me. She said they are being held much more accountable for coupon usage and I told her that was good to know, but I was not trying to “get away” with anything, etc.

  38. Kristen

I did the “live chat” on Clairol’s website and this is what the rep told me:

“kristen: There is a coupon in the November P&G booklet for $2.00 off any Clairol Family. Does this include Herbal Essences Shampoos and Conditioners?

Alisa: I checked and it looks like that coupon would only be good for Clairol hair color products.

Alisa: Since Herbal Essences no longer says Clairol on the bottle as they used to, I doubt that the coupon would include it. I think it should, though.

kristen : So even if stores will take them and the register doesn’t “beep” I shouldn’t be using them – it’s not a valid use of the coupon?

Alisa: If the stores will take them, I don’t see any problem really. They might or might not. It don’t think it would not hurt to try it.

kristen lish: So the store will get reimbursed for the coupon?

Alisa: If they are able to take the coupon, then I believe they will get reimbursed for it. To me, Clairol does own Herbal Essences. We do customer service for both here. Sorry for any confusion on it. It made me kind of wonder as well honestly. ”

Sorry for the long post – HTH!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

the shampoo does say clairol on it, right on the front top. however, I just went and they said no deal! called number on coupon and they said no it does not include shampoo and conditioner

    • Jessica K

The bottle I bought said “Clairol” on it!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I just called 1-800-Clairol and the rep told me the coupon CAN be used on Herbal Essences products and the store will be reimbursed without any problems. She said the same thing about it not saying Clairol on the bottle anymore, so I don’t know where they are getting that from.

      • christine

I work for a company that P&G bought 2 1/2 years ago. P&G has been re-vamping their formulas and packaging materials (bottles and labels). I am pretty sure that their newest stock does not have Clariol on it, but this stock has not hit the stores yet. Nothing at P&G happens very fast. The building that I work at was suppose to close 2 years ago…..we are still there.

  39. april r

THanks for the post, but I don’t use coupons that are at-a-glance not used properly. I would expect to hear something from any cashier about this, and I avoid those types of situations especially to keep good standing w/ my local stores. They all trust me, wouldn’t want to compromise that. Great Q though…

  40. Jennifer

CVS wouldn’t even scan it for me. they said it was for hair coloring

  41. linda2010

I used the $2 Clairol one for Herbal Essences at Rite Aid today. It did beep, but she pushed it through.

@ Kristen – Thanks for sharing your conversation with customer svc with us!

  42. Amy

The cashier at my local Rite Aid refused to scan to even TRY IT. She claimed that it was their policy to only accept coupons where the product matches what is pictured (WTF?). The cashier was very rude so I called corporate and apparently their store is going to be reprimanded for not following corporate coupon policy. Good.

Then I sent a letter to the CVS customer service thanking my local store for being great with coupons and never hassling me 🙂 I knew there was a reason why I drive by two Rite Aids, Walgreen’s, Wegman’s, Wal-mart, and Target just to get to CVS.

  43. Leisa Fleming

I have a great CVS store that I frequent and their are particular cashiers who are just amazing!

I bought 2 styling products, a conditioner and shampoo.
    Total was 11.96 before taxes.
    Paid 4.28 and received $4.00 ECB =]
Yay! For some reason it printed out a extra $2.00 ECB

    I paid .28 cents for all 4

    Gotta love CVS!

  44. Nikki

my coupon is in both english & spanish. I do not speak/read spanish but when I put the spanish into a translator this is what it comes up with: $2 of discount when buying a Clairol product any
($2 de descuento al comprar un producto Clairol cualquiera)

    • SandraNYC

Nikki, I noticed that too, the word “cualquiera” means any so I guess we have to find a Spanish speaking cashier…

  45. Jessica K

I did this at Rite Aid. It beeped, but the manager pushed it through once she saw “Clairol” right on the Herbal Essences bottle. Hurray!

  46. Jacqueline

I used the clariol coupon Sunday at riteaid. I just asked the lady would she try and see if it would work. I showed her the coupon and the wording. She looked at the Herbal Essence bottle and seen the Clariol name and said sure I will try and see if the coupon will work. Worked fine with no beeps I got 10 Herbal Essence Shampoos for a total with tax of $31.70 used a 5/25.00 riteaid coupon and then total was 26.70 then 20.00 deducted for the Cariol 2.00 coupon Total paid $6.70 and received 10 $2.00 ups reward on my receipt.

  47. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Rolled this deal three times at three different stores. No problems whatsoever. Got 17 items, paid maybe $10 out of pocket total and I still have $12 in Up Rewards left over!

    Thanks!

  48. Sarah

I already did the deal at CVS, so I will save this coupon for Black Friday. The HE (Hydrolicious) will be $3.99 with $3.99 in ECB! There is a limit of 2
