Coffee with Collin: Coupon Organization Part I

This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Monday, February 28th, 2011 at 1:41 pm.

Today is my third episode of Coffee with Collin. In addition to discussing the various coupon organization methods, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit with Hip2Save reader, Jennie, from Missouri.

Enjoy!

**If you can’t see the video, go here to watch it.

As you will see in the video above, my favorite coupon organization method is the three-ring binder with baseball card sleeves and clear plastic dividers. I prefer a standard three-ring binder versus the more expensive zippered binder. Although I initially started out with a zippered binder, I was unable to zip the binder as my coupon stash expanded (which defeats the purpose). In addition, the binder was so bulky and very difficult to put in my purse. Although you can arrange your coupons alphabetically, I choose to arrange them by category (stay tuned for next week’s episode as you’ll be able to print off a list of my favorite categories).

If you are a newbie couponer, keep in mind that you may want to start small. Instead of jumping into a binder (which can be very overwhelming), consider filling up an envelope with coupons. As you become more familiar with couponing and are determined to continue for the long term, then you may want to advance to the binder method.

You may also want to consider Jennie’s preferred coupon organization method. Jennie arranges her coupons alphabetically in a plastic box.  She writes each category on a 3×5 card/sticky note, staples the index card/sticky note inside a small envelope and organizes the envelopes within the box in alphabetical order by category (see Jennie’s pictures below)…

Did you miss my past Coffee with Collin episodes?! If so, head on over here to check them out.

Would you like to appear as a phone guest on an upcoming episode of Coffee with Collin?
Be sure to complete the form found here!

A special thanks to GiftCardRescue.com for providing Jennie with a $50 Starbucks gift card! If you are in the market to buy, sell or exchange unwanted gift cards, be sure to check out GiftCardRescue.com.

My Long Day of Bargain Shopping…

This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Monday, February 28th, 2011 at 1:04 pm.

So as I mentioned last night, I went shopping yesterday and when I say shopping – I mean shopping! I went to CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target and the Commissary! It was definitely fun scoring lots of great bargains and deals, but it was also nice to get home and put my feet up… my hubby even gave me a much needed foot massage! :)

I haven’t gone shopping like that in a long time, so I really stocked up on some great buys. I also used lots of coupons that expired yesterday and quite a few that are expiring today. I definitely feel re-energized about going “deal” shopping more often. With that being said, it’s always nice to take some time off because when you get back in the swing of things… well, you really get back in the swing of things! ;)

So the first store I stopped in was Walgreens. I started out with no Register Rewards and did 2 transactions. In the first transaction I purchase two 20 ct Motrin PMs (FREE after the $6/2 coupon!) and a Baby Magic Shampoo/body wash for $3. I made a mistake, though, and accidentally grabbed the 40 ct Motirn that was priced at $8.79… Oops! The good news is I realized this before paying since my total was a lot higher than what I had calculated, so I was able to run back and grab the 20 ct. In my second transaction, I purchased another set of Motrin PMs, a Schick Hydro 3 razor and a container of Altoids Mints on sale for $0.69 (filler item for my coupon to item ratio – not pictured). I used the $6/2 Motrin coupon, the $2/1 Schick coupon and the $3 Baby Magic RR from the previous Transaction to lower my out of pocket expense which ended up being around $5.05 (after tax). So my total for both transactions came to $8.29 AND I still had two $3 Register Rewards from the Motrin and a $6 Register Reward from the Schick!

Next I went to CVS where I did 2 transactions. I had a few of the FREE Excedrin coupons that were available previously and I also had the $2/1 Kashi coupons from Recycle Bank. Plus, I made use of the $2/1 Dove coupons that expired yesterday. Plus, I found Dove Ultimate deodorant on clearance which made the Extra Care Buck deal even sweeter. After both transactions, I paid a total of $7.98 out of pocket and still have $11.58 in Extra Care Bucks to use at a later date!

We were then off to Target! I got excited at Target when I found a basketful of clearance Maybelline lipstick that ended up being FREE after the $2/1 Maybelline lip product coupon found in the 2/6 RP. I also found L’Oreal cosmetics on clearance. I was also happy to score some inexpensive Kraft shredded cheese and Kellogg’s Crunchy nut cereal. After coupons, I paid only $3.23 for everything pictured! :)

Next I headed to Rite Aid and scored 4 FREE Nivea lip products, two bags of Burger King ketchup and fries… yes, I know – they sound pretty disgusting… but that was the only FREE after +Up Rewards snack item left, so I decided to go ahead and get 2 bags. I also found $0.55/1 peelie coupons on the BodiHeat patches that were also FREE (+ a moneymaker!) after coupons and +Up Rewards. So after everything – I paid just $0.48 (*Note: I did use +Up rewards from a previous transaction to pay).

And… finally, I headed to the Commissary! I wanted to make sure to try and use a lot of the coupons that were expiring. Plus, I was excited, because thanks to a reader’s tip, I was able to score some nice overage on the small 1.75 oz packages of Millstone coffee with the $2/1 coupon! I also used the leftover Register Rewards from Walgreens to help lower my out of pocket expense! Yep, the Commissary actually accepts Register Rewards! :) So my total for all of the above, after coupons and Register Rewards, came to just $19.91. I purchased 91 items and saved a total of $152.08 – which made my total savings 92%!! :)

The whole day of shopping cost me a little under $40! …And that, is why I use coupons! :)
