  1. Me

    I don’t think that’s a Touch….

    • Karen

Agreed. That is the plain Kindle. Kindle Touch is $99 (no mention of a gift card)

      • Lynn

agree. I checked it out as well. ad says Kindle. darn! 🙁

    • Lisa

I just called my local Walmart–they say it is a kindle touch!

    • abby

That looks like a regular kindle. Not a touch screen one. I need some SERIOUS proof that this is a kindle touch.

  2. cee lee

The photo nor the link are for the Kindle Touch. This deal is for the regular non-touch Kindle.

  3. Rose

I havent researched Kindle’s much but a friend has one and I am thinking this might be for me. but what is difference between this one and the touch? Would i be happier with the touch?

    • Karen

the kindle has a keypad, the kindle touch is touchscreen. The touch is slightly smaller and lighter (not by much), and the storage capabilities are pretty similar. For the price, I’d stick with the regular kindle. If you are wanting a kindle (as opposed to an actual tablet) for web browsing or whatnot, then you’re out of the realm of both of these kindles and into kindle fire territory. For primary usage as an ereader, the plain kindle is perfectly adequate. Especially at $49!

      • Aly

Thank you for this info, Karen!!

      • Emilytwinmom

I agree – my husband has an ipad, and wanted an ereader without the backlighting. He looooves his kindle, and we got the $79 one 😉

        • Barb

I’m not too familiar with the different types of Kindles either, but you mentioned backlighting….is the “regular” Kindle capable of being read in the sunlight?

          • Karen

Yes. The text is very similar to a regular book. You can read it in the sunlight without the glare that backlighting causes. Because it isn’t backlit you can’t read in the dark (again, like a regular book)

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sorry for the confusion! I am honestly not that familar with Kindles and did not realize that this sale is for the regular Kindle and not the Kindle Touch. I just updated the post.

  5. Melissa

I cant find iy can someone put the link up directly to the kindle please.

    • Karen

      It’s an in-store offer.

  6. runtrunt

I work at walmart. its for the regualr Kindle, with the buttons. Still a great deal 🙂 but not the touch

  7. Corrine

    I cannot locate it either…..

  8. Michelle

My son is turning 9 next week and is asking for the Kindle Fire. He is an average reader, but not really “into” reading when he doesn’t have to. I’m thinking the fire would get him interested in reading more especially because of the colored pictures. I think he like the apps on there. This kindle above is only $49 though. Any thoughts? I don’t know anything about these reading machines. Thank you in advance 🙂

    • Krysta

I think the Fire would get much more use by a 9 year old… The $49 kindle is not color and I would say it’s more appropriate for adult readers who do not care about pictures and apps. You will pay quite a bit more for the Fire, but worth it if he gets more use out of it. Also, the Kindle fire is comparable to an ipad, which, in my opinion, makes it worth the extra $$.

    • Ashley57

The Kindle Fire is more like a tablet, so that may be why he wants it. You can access the Internet, watch videos with Netflix or Amazon Prime, surf the web, download games like Angry Birds or whatever. The Kindle above does not have Web access (except to download books). It depends on your budget and why you think he really wants it.

    • Elise

I agree, if he isn’t a bookworm, the regular Kindle would bore him. Bestbuy is having a deal where if you buy the Kindle Fire you get $40 off the regular Kindle, when purchased together (which is a 50% savings.)

      • Michelle

Thank you so much for your advise. My one concern would be internet access. Does the fire have parental controls where I could turn internet access off? And yes Angry Birds is a hit with him. I will definately have to check out the deals at our Best Buy this week. Thank you so much for your thoughts 🙂

    • andrea

If it were me, I would wait. Some of my kids (the ones who like to read) have Kindles (the regular kind) and love them. A couple of my kids who do not like to read would probably love the Kindle Fire, but they would not use it for reading. Maybe try some graphic novels or something that he is interested in, to get him more into reading, if that is your goal.

  9. Laura

There are similar deals at Best Buy this week! That’s where you CAN get a Kindle Touch for $149 with a $40 Best Buy gift card in return. I think there is also a deal where you can buy the Kindle Fire for $199 & get a regular Kindle for $40, but that may be just locally. Check them out too!

    • Elise

It’s the Kindle Touch w/3g and special offers. In store only.

  10. Hayley

Can you use the gift card towards the price of the Kindle?

    • Susan

No. I just bought the Kindle Keyboard (no ads) for 149, down from 189 at Walmart. No one in my store knew about the gift card deal even though they had the information in the sales cabinet. It took two managers and three clerks to determine the 30 gift card is only for the plain Kindle. And, NO you cannot use it immediately for the Kindle purchase. You can, however, use it immediately on anything else in the store after you’ve received the card.

    • Sara

I was wondering the same thing. Can you?

  11. michelle

Ooo, I’m going to have to check out my Walmart, I’ve been wanting one!

  12. michelle

Do I have to have wireless internet to put books on this? Or can I hook it to my computer and put books on that way? I don’t have/ can’t get wireless internet at my house. But could go other places that has wifi to download books if I have to.

    • andrea

You can hook it up to your computer and download books that way. We did that before we got wireless.

    • Jen

I don’t think you need a wireless internet to download. The Kindle has that capablity itself. I have Kindle( not a Touch, not a Fire)…I can get my ebooks right from the Kindle itself ( you can shop right on it)…anywhere…I can be 500 miles away from my house and it will work fine. I have also been at my desk computer and downloaded from my Amazon account with One Touch to my Kindle. I also charge mine with a regular wall plug cord that comes with it.

      • andrea

The Kindle being advertised is the one I have. If you have wireless internet, you can download books right onto it. If you don’t, you hook it up to your computer and download them that way.

  13. wendy

michelle–you DO need wireless internet. We learned this when we bought my dad one. It hooks to computer but only to charge.
Does anyone know if you can borrow ebooks from public libraries with a kindle?

    • Jen

There must be something wrong with either your kindle, the cord (are you using the ‘Kindle’ cord or a generic?), or your computer. The only time I use the wireless to transfer content is when I purchase through Amazon whispernet service – other wise I plug the kindle into my computer, it recognizes as a ‘device’ and I drag and drop my books into the ‘documents’ file. Very simple and easy…

    • andrea

Many libraries do let you. My particular library has a rather limited selection but if you are near a larger library you might have more selection.

  14. michelle

Thanks, once downloaded I can read them without wireless internet though right?

    • andrea

      Yes

    • Jen

Read my above comment – you DON’T have to have wireless to transfer your content. And yes, you can read without having wireless available. In fact, your battery will last longer if you only turn the wireless part on while you’re actually using it.

      • andrea

Thanks for that last bit of information. My battery runs out so fast and that is probably why; I never thought to turn the wireless off.

      • michelle

O, wow thanks! I was reading on my phone and didn’t see all the posts saying I don’t need wireless, only saw the post saying I do need wireless, LOL.

  15. rae

All three stores claim sold out in Gainesville, FL since yesterday.

    • Jennifer TW

Will I get a raincheck on this if my WM is out? Anyone know?

    • Karen

Can you get a raincheck? Or is it only while supplies last?

Does anyone know if Target would match the WalMart ad?

  16. michelle

Called my closest Wm and they r out but the Wm about 30 min away said they have a ton, can’t make it there till Wed. Hoping they will still have some then.

  17. Michelle

i was reading about this on Amazon, and it says this:
    Free Access at AT&T Hotspots
Enjoy free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the U.S. for shopping and downloading Kindle content — no AT&T registration, sign-in, or password required.

so i take it as long as ATT has service I should be able to download?? and not have to even hook it to my computer?

  18. rach

Any device that says ‘wi-fi’just means it has wireless capability, meaning a high speed wireless modem, built it. It means that if you have wireless service, you can use this device with it to get online, or go to any place, like mcdonalds, a coffee shop, many hotels, etc…that have ‘hotspots’, which are free wireless signals that require no password, subscription, etc. They are broadband (unsecured) signals that anyone with wirelss capability can use. However, without getting too technical, your internet capabilities are limited by the machines specs, that include but are not limited to….memory , type and speed of processor, operating system (android, etc)….Many ereaders are not built to surf the web, just have enough capabiliy to check your email and such. They dont have flash capability, so you cant watch utube or videos, and the speed of the processor is too slow to download oics or other large files. So for reading and some email type functions they are fine. Some people ‘root’ these type of tablets, which involves hacking into the hardwear and installing other things, but you dont want to go that route. For real dual capability yoy need the kindle fire. But for reading only, like a beach bag type product, $50 isnt too bad.

  19. rach

To download books u have to have internet. Not wireless but some internet connection to buy them from amazon. You can order from your computer then transfer them to your kindle. Im not sure about their prices but just consider that you will be restricted to getting everything from amazon. Not being in color would be an issue for younger kids, since illustrations are key, and even adults who would like magazines.

    • Jen

You are not restricted to only purchasing books from Amazon. I purchase from a lot of sites and read them on my Kindle.

      • rach

@jen, do you buy from other sites on the kindle, or on your own computer? Because thats true you can buy from other sites on your computer, but the actusl kindle itself is only set up with the amazon bookstore. To order thru somewhere else on the ereader u would have to go online and probably download another bookstore app, which may or may not be possible..at the least its a hassle. Just saying that amazon products are set up to sell amazon only, so pricing whatever it is youre buying it for is a good idea before buying it and realizing the books are too expensive . 🙂

        • Jen

I buy them on the computer – even when I purchase through amazon and have them sent to my kindle through whispernet. The kindle browser is too clunky so it’s way faster just to use the PC.

  20. Bethany

Can you purchase and read magazines on it as well?

    • Karen

Yes, but this version of kindle only has a black and white display. Depending what magazines you plan on reading on it that may or may not influence your decision.

  21. Emilytwinmom

Every Walmart in our area (north GA) said they haven’t carried the regular Kindle since the fire came out last fall. They didn’t have a clue about any sale or deal going on with the regular kindle, and I called FOUR Walmarts! I wanted to get one for mother’s day for a present, so I just went to Best Buy. I got free insurance and a code for a free shutterfly photo book. Worked for me, at least they knew what they were doing at Best Buy!

  22. Alexandra

perfect timing 🙂 I was about to buy one for my Mom and my daughter!! Thank you

  23. Augusta

My cousin got 2 and was able to use the first gift card towards the 2nd!

  24. Sherry

We went to Walmart this morning to purchase, and they would not allow us to use the $30.00 gift card:(

  25. Texmom

I have an older Kindle and for this price w/card, it’s worth it to anyone who enjoys reading. Sure, the others have more to offer but also cost way more. Free wifi included. Also, you can download and read free pdf files. They can be converted to Kindle format using the free Calibre e-book software, then easily transferred to your Kindle with the included USB cord. Holds a charge for a long time, too.

  26. Michelle

yay! im so excited, i got one today, i had a $25 gift certificate i won the other day so i only spent $25 in the end:) not bad, i love it so far!

  27. mommyto3

I bought 2 yesterday, one for my son who’s turning 14 in a week and one for my brother who’s birthday is today. They let me use my first $30 GC to pay for the 2nd Kindle, and I used my 2nd $30 GC to pay for my groceries. I figure for the price they will make great gifts & my son already has an ipod so I’m hoping the Kindle will encourage him to read. He just finished the Hunger Games trilogy and loved them and he’s not a reader, so please if anyone knows of a good book series you enjoyed or your teens enjoyed please post.
