Per the purchase confirmation e-mail from American Express “It will take approximately 7-19 business days after purchase to receive the card (based on shipping and payment method).”
Reading the fine print, it looks like it could take up to 5 days for the money to be available. I’m not sure if I’m reading it right, but here’s what I found:
“Simply enter your account information online to reload from your checking or saving account. Please note funds will generally be available within 5 business days after the load is requested.”

Is there an activation fee??
I’m wondering the same thing. It says no to all the other fees, but I don’t see one specifically “activation fee”.
That could seriously impact the deal for me.

ATM FEE American Express provides one free ATM withdrawal per calendar month. Thereafter, a fee of $2.00 is assessed against the balance of the Card.
Please note: ATM owners/operators may also charge their own fees for each withdrawal.
There are no fees for activating or reloading the American Express Prepaid Card.

SO… it’s completely free to get the card, load money and spend the money? No fees/charges for anything ever??
It’s free to load the card IF you do it through direct deposit or a bank account that you connect when you purchase the card. If I’m reading it correctly – there is a fee associated to load if you go through the other two options – which are the Vanilla Reload Network, and MoneyPak.
The MoneyPak fee of $3.95 is refundable if it’s the first load, so it’s basically free for this offer.
I read somewhere else that this is only for American Express members that were e-mailed this info. When they had a similiar offer before, a lot of people never recieved their card. I am going to opt out of this, but best of luck to all of you. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!
That was a previous offer, not this one. That is why some did not receive their cards. This current offer is definitely available to everyone! By the way – the limit on this card is 3 per person. You can only get 1 card in your name, but you can purchase 2 more if you like for other people – say one for the hubby and one for your son/daughter. You should get 3 $25 bonus cards if you purchase 3 cards and load each one with $200. You get one free ATM withdrawal per month, otherwise there is a fee.
Does anyone know if the gift card is an actual American Express gift card or is it a gift card to one particular merchant, such as red lobster?
