This is one of those hi brow mags with exotic recipes & costly ingred.
Fun to look @ but not practical.

The recipes offered do tend toward the exotic, and if you’re cooking for kids it’s probably not the best place to find recipes. But if you have extra time in the kitchen it’s always neat to try out different recipes.

I don’t think they have costly ingredients though, that part is not true. I looked through the October issue and it has recipes for Buffalo Wings, Caesar Salad, Borscht, Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd’s Pie, Pound Cake, Peanut Butter Cookies, Blondies, Chocolate Cake, and Sweet Potato Pie. The only major expense in any recipe in Saveur seems to be from spices and cheeses. I always substitute cheeses, and for spices I buy them cheap in bulk bottles that my local grocery store offers under their own brand name. The spices last me nearly forever so they are a one-time investment to unlock many new flavors in the kitchen.

Buy spices you don’t use often from the bulk bins at Whole Foods Market or a similar store. You can buy very small quantities for new/seasonal recipes for just a few cents. If you don’t like them toss them. No need to wonder why you have Cardamom in your cabinet 2 years from now.

Buying spices from bulk bins is great for the holiday season. You can buy cinnamon, nutmeg or sage that’s super fresh AND organic – cheap! No temptation to use items that have lost flavor sitting on the shelf for months on end just because they were expensive.

FYI: McCormick has a handy Web site widget called “How Old Are Your Spices” http://www.mccormick.com/Spices101/HowOldSpices.aspx, and there’s also a guide to let you know how long you should keep spices, extracts, or herbs.

        HTH:)

the page isn’t loading for me…

  5. Cee

last time I tried this one I had to answer a bunch of questions and then was prompted to buy more magazines and wanted credit card info.

  6. Cee

Umm I tried again this time and the same thing happens. After it all goes through another page shows up and says you are entitled to something more and asked you to choose subscriptions for $ 1.00 each and then of course you need credit info. At no point was the supposed free magazine confirmed. I did this once before and never did get the magazine. Don’t think it has gone through this time either.

    • Roland

You just don’t understand what you are doing then. There is nothing on that screen that says you must buy the other magazines nor opt into their offers. READ WHAT IS ON THE SCREEN.

At the very end when you see the page with the $1.00 magazines and the credit card info… that is a whole separate window that opened up for me… if you close that you will see your “confirmed” info page for the free magazine w/o having to enter your cc info!

    Got it. Thanks, Collin!!

After many attempts, finally got this to work. Looking forward to this magazine. Disagree with the comment that it’s a highbrow mag with exotic recipes. We should strive to feed our families healthy, well rounded foods, not just hot pockets and sunny delight…My only criticism with this site. Much of the savings offered are on highly processed, genetically modified, unhealthy food. Let’s cook! Expand our palates and feed our families healthy, unadulterated food. And FYI – I’m poor. We have a 10 year old car and an old tube TV but I spend more on food because I believe it’s the right thing to do to keep my family healthy 🙂

I got this the other day and ordered for some family members using different addresses and email addresses. I got a confirmation for all of the orders to be sent to my address. Has anyone had this issue? I don’t know why it did that since each email was for a different address (my husband is not working much and is currently fighting cancer, so I am looking to share the Christmas cheer in a frugal, yet festive way).

Would love any suggestions anyone might have on what happened. Kinda flummoxed myself :).

    • CourtneyAmanda

This is in my confirmation email

“If you would like your publication(s) delivered to a different address, you will need to contact the publisher of your subscription directly to change your address. You can find publisher contact information either in the first few pages of the print magazine or at the publisher website.”
