Depending the percentage of fat, I think this would only be a good deal on the 7% fat

  2. Savedbycoupons

Winn Dixie had ground chuck on sale last week for $2.99 per lb. I find $3.49/lb. to be expensive for ground beef.

  3. amanda

The fresh market has it 2.99 a pound on Tuesdays all month. I love their meat….much better than your normal grocery store

  4. Kris

I think that is expensive too. I never buy ground beef over $3/lb even if its 93% lean

I am assuming since it is not stated that this is not grass fed beef?

    • Kathy

I don’t think so, the grass fed in my store is usually something like $7/lb, so I’m assuming it’s corn fed ๐Ÿ™

    • Jessica

That is exactly what I was wondering. I assum the same thing.

At Costco 5 pounds 91% meat, already-frozen ground beef (packaged in 1-lb. sections) is $15.95. Just FYI! I like to know where I can consistently get a decent price on certain things in case I need it and haven’t caught a sale. And around me, I have not found 91% meat for less than $3.19/lb, even on sale. I don’t like to buy the 80% meat even when on sale because so much gets wasted when I cook it (and it’s less healthy).

I think all Whole Foods meat, even the non-organic, is hormone- and antibiotic-free, which is much better than the food you buy in a regular grocery store unless it’s specified organic there. There are no limitations on antibiotics used in ground meat and chicken in regular grocery stores, so paying a little more (or in this case, actually less than a non-sale at my regular store) is actually a good choice if you can afford it.

    • Katie

Also, I don’t think the ground meat deal on Tuesdays at Fresh Market is antibiotic-free, but the chicken deal is.

i’m reluctant to get just any grocery store beef also because of wanting to avoid pink slime… only stores I trust are Costco, whole foods, & trader joes. other than that they need to be marked organic or the like…. i’m willing to pay a little more for non-pink slime meat

      • Nancy

Yes it is antibiotic free and no added hormones. I work at WFM. This is a fantastic price.

I’ve heard before that it’s more of a waste to spend money on the lower fat beef because when you use the 80/20, you burn off the majority of that fat during the cooking process. But I’m no cooking expert, that’s for sure. lol

    • K

And you’re left with 80% of what you paid for rather than 90% or higher. I can usually get 93% lean on sale for only 20ยข more per pound than 80%. I’d rather pay extra and get more meat.

    • cathy

Linda H., Ground hamburger and chuck come for the same area’s of the cow. So, when comparing prices you can do this. If 80/20 is $2.59 a lbs and 90/10 is $2.85 a lbs. There are the same relative price because you get 10% more meat in the 90/10.

Simple math 80/20 you are only getting .8 lbs or 12.8 oz of meat in 1 lbs.
      90/10 you are only getting .9 or 14.4 .

Moving from ground hamburger or chuck to ground sirloin is different. Sirloin is not only lower in fat but its meat comes from a different part of the cow. Chuck to Sirloin is a matter of taste.

      • K

That’s a good way to figure it out. Thanks!

  9. Mayra

This is a great price for ground beef in my area! $3.99 is an extremely great deal IMO for my area. i live in a very HCOL area in maryland.

    • Kristen

I am in HoCo, MD, so I feel your pain ๐Ÿ™‚ Check out Costco if you have a membership – I get frozen 91% ground beef for $3.19/lb.

  10. Mayra

Thanks Kristen! I am in MOCO!

  11. cathy

I only pay $2.69 a pound for ground sirloin at Sam’s Club. You have to use a non-stick pan when cooking it because there’s so little fat. I believe it’s only 7% fat.

  12. Alona

I buy ny ground beef at Safeway or Smith’s for no more than $1.99. I am not sure if there is something extra special about the whole foods ground beef, but I find $3.49 overly expensive…

  13. Brit

It’s 80/20 ground beef at my store. ๐Ÿ™ I don’t like to buy meat unless it’s 90 or less, so I guess this isn’t worth it for me.

  14. missy

    Got some thanks.
