Rebecca, my son (8) loves to get the Star Wars sets but honestly plays with his City and Creator sets more. You can just do more with them.
My son who is ten soon to be eleven has quite a few of the lego star war sets. From the small sets to the death star as well as other various sets. If your son is anything like mine, it could be any lego set. He throughly enjoys playing and constructing them. Also, keep your eyes peeled-the holidays are coming up and I have gotten some great deals on legos at Walmart.com, Amazon, and yo yo.com. Walmart is a good place to shop after the holidays too-towards Feb-March. I hope this helps.
