On a side note, I thought you might enjoy watching this Pay it Forward video that I filmed back in November 2010 (three years ago – time sure does fly!). Check out what happened when I gave a Starbucks Drive-Thru Employee $200 to pay for unsuspecting customer’s orders – it was an awesome day! 😀

As I was scrolling through your page, I stopped right at this video. Honestly, it wasn’t the title, it was the balloon that stopped me. At first I thought you were announcing you were pregnant with a baby girl! I than saw the title, lol!!

    • Christine

Oops left that comment under wrong video, I swear you just had the other video here.

Collin, you are an inspiration and have a such a kind heart. Very moving video not sure how I missed in 2010 but very glad I got to see it this morning. Still motivational 3 years later, I can’t wait to pass along some pay it forward moments this week.

Thought you would enjoy hearing about my sons experience. A tradition that him and his friends have done for about 5 years is going out for pie on pi day. Last year the 6 boys went to a restaurant for pie and a drink to celebrate the day. They were all about 17 to 18 years old and still in high school.
When they went to pay for their bill the waitress told them that a lady had paid for it all. She was a retired math teacher and got such a kick out of listening to the boys talk math and was so happy to hear that kids are excited about math that she paid for their pie and drink. The lady had already left the restaurant so the boys never got a chance to say Thank you. . She never once talked to the boys she just listened to their conversation. A few days later I talked to the waitress to try to find out who it was so that the boys could send her a Thank you card but the waitress had no idea who it was, she said that she had never seen her before. So I guess we will never know but the boys got a chance to experience a sweet ladies kindness.

Awesome! My little brother (ok, he’s 30 now) used to celebrate Pi day with his friends. They used to talk Pi on the bus until everyone else was bored to tears. Who knew there was so much to say about it.

Wow, Collin. You’re an amazing person. Thanks for all you do!!!

I’m unsure how to feel about Starbucks advertising to “pay if forward”. Yes it’s a reminder, but paying it forward should be a selfless act (as if your not expecting something out of it. Good karma will come on it’s own time). Just my opinion.

I think this is such a great way to “kick off” the “season” of giving.. 🙂 For those of us who may lose sight of sharing throughout the year, this is such a great way to remind everyone that giving/sharing/kindness doesn’t go unrecognized! I see this as Starbucks “planting the seed” for more selfless acts.. 🙂

What a wonderful video. It brought tears to my eyes!

My family recently moved back from Germany so I’m back to following your site everyday multiple times each day. I have really missed all the samples and deals, that weren’t necessarily available in Germany. I’m on your site within 30 minutes of waking up. Thank you for everything that you do to help save us $$$$! You are awesome!! I look forward to the upcoming holiday deals & challenges. & YES I’ll be paying it forward SOON!!!

  13. Terri Harrison

Love this idea. I’m heading over to Starbucks right now to do the same. Just not with $300.00. I wish I had more.

I went to pay it forward one day and well it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. I went into Starbucks one day to get a drink and while waiting for my drink I noticed an older lady (probably had to be at least 70) trying to write a check for her order. When the cashier told her that they didn’t accept checks, thelady said she didn’t have any other way to pay. Thinking I would be nice I stepped up and said- don’t worry about paying- I’ll get it for you. The cashier and the lady both look at me and say “Are you sure?” I was like sure, no problem- thinking that at max it would be a $4-$5 drink. Nope. She was getting a couple full bags of coffee beans. Over $20 worth! At that point I couldn’t say nevermind so I pulled out my credit card and paid. The lady did offer to write me a check for the amount but I told her not to worry about it. Now I make sure I pay attention to what someone is getting if I do that!!

That was nice of you 🙂

I am a high school teacher and a teacher at our school started a Kindness Campaign Contest for our students. It is completely optional, but students can pick up a “challenge” from the teacher. If they complete their challenge, they need to write a brief reflection and turn it back in to be entered in her contest (she purchased a $75 Visa Gift card out of her own money)! This just started on Monday and already 50 students have completed challenge (from leaving a note on a student’s desk, to cleaning a classroom, to paying for another student’s lunch and so on). The teachers have also started their own campaign. While many students were motivated by the “prize” for the contest winner (randomly drawn from the students who are participating) the snowball effect has already started. I am SO PROUD of what these kids are doing!

Oh.. and your video made me cry.. I’m that emotional of a person. : )

  16. Shannon

This video was great! It made me cry to!

I love this site and I love the idea of paying it forward, but I question if doing that at Starbucks is the thing to do. The person behind you in line already can afford a Starbucks otherwise they would not be there. Is there not a different way to pay it forward? So we kind of know it goes directly to people who cannot afford fancy expensive drinks or even regular groceries.

    • Linda R

I don’t think it matters at all if you can “already afford it.” I believe it’s the act of thoughtfulness that counts. Everyone can benefit from a nice little surprise every now and then 🙂

    • Briana

I don’t think it has anything to do with “those who can already afford it”. I’m a young stay at home mom and my husband recently took a pay cut. We can’t necessarily afford Starbucks frequently like some people can but I love a fancy cup of coffee just as much as any other mom with a baby under 1. It’s a treat that’s been well earned when I go. Usually also only when I’ve got a gift card or scored some great deal.

  18. Lisa

Loved the video! Do you know how many orders they were able to cover with that $300?…just curious. I wish I was rich and could do things like this everyday!

What a beautiful way to start off the Holiday Season. I heard mentioned on the news the other day how we as a society are getting more “mean” & “disconnected” from all these tech toys we use. Lets hope this starts a chain of not just coffee but other things (remember the layaway Santas”) and not just things, but kind acts as well. Luved the expressions in your video, Collin! Keep up the good deeds <3

My mom and I love doing random acts of kindness. There’s a small laundromat near us, so my mom had the idea of taking some freebies we got, putting little pass it on cards on them, and leaving it all in a basket at the laundromat. We’ve seen everything from crying to kids jumping up and down. It’s to the point where the community brings in donations, which I thought was awesome. It meant a lot to me because for two years I had to use a food bank, and there’s not always a huge selection of brand name items, or any clothing. Now at the little laundromat we leave gently used clothes, quarters to use for loads of laundry, even coupons for people to go through. I encourage everyone to do random acts of kindness, it’s made me happy knowing that I’ve helped so many people.

I did this today, but I guess the Starbucks I was at wasn’t partcipating? What was nice though was the lady I paid for put her cash in the barista’s tip jar! I did like that!

  22. Leanne

I did this today! And I got 15% back on my Solavei Rewards card! Love the new Solavei Market Place program.
