I know the last few times I was in Target all their Tide products were on clearance. I think I’ve seen a little buzz in your comment sections with people asking why this is. I saw this article on Yahoo today about how Tide is decreasing their load size which in turn means that you’re paying more for each load of detergent even though their is no price increase. I work in the laundry detergent business and a lot of companies change load size in order to sneakily take a price increase without consumers noticing. I just thought I’d share this information.[/h2s_box]

Although this article does state that the price of regular Tide won’t change, it claims that you will pay more for Tide Plus since P&G is shrinking each container but keeping the same sale price. For example, a 100 ounce bottle will be decreased to 92 ounces allowing P&G to sell less volume for the same price.

Every company does it, remember when Kleenex boxes came in 200ct, now they are 184ct. Do they think we are stupid?? At least Tide started to come out with higher value coupons. I didn’t buy Tide for years due to their 25c or 50c coupons, but give me a $2 coupon and a good sale and I will buy them all day long.

I totally noticed when Kleenex tissues went from 200 to 184 in a box. I also agree with you on tide. If there were higher value Tide coupons I would buy it. I love Tide but its so expensive so I stick with All or Purex.

At the $ store yesterday they had a pretty decent size box of Turtles Candies. I wanted to check expiration because this store usually has candy that is very near expiration. Then I noticed the box said 2 count. The box was so big it could have held 14 turtles! 2 turtles for $1.25 …That’s just crazy!! (my dollar is no longer a $)

      WOW! That’s just wrong…

I remember when sugar went from 5 lbs to 4, not to mention coffee is much smaller than it used to be. It helps cover up how much inflation we are really experiencing.

You know, sometimes the only way to keep an item on the shelf is to either reduce the size of the product or raise the price. I don’t think staying in business is a bad thing and I am not sure any of us have information to prove they are being nefarious, especially not every time.

With that said however, I don’t like them ‘tricking’ the consumer into believing they are getting the same amount as before. Companies should be honest with their consumers, even if that won’t get them as much money in the short run.

I know alot of people like tide but honestly i make my own powder detergent way cheaper free of chemicals and the grains of the detergent are way softer. I buy detergent if it is 2.50 tops and make my own if irun out. i got a buch of all a few weeks back for 1 and 1.50 each per bottle thats cheaper or the same as making it. i use oxiclean fro mdollar store box washing soda 3 ivory bars or the felsnapta pink stuffand baking soda. pretreater dawn watered down enough to spray out of a bottle.

How do you make your detergent

    • Judy

It’s washing soda, not baking soda that is used in the homemade soap. there is a difference.

  6. amberm78

They did this with Pamper diapers, too. There are less diapers in the jumbo packs now. 🙁

    • mweyler

ditto. Just went to buy them and realized there were fewer so decided to hold off and purchase them at another store that has not switched to new packages yet…if can find one very soon.

  7. Dani

Yep. We make our own, too! So much cheaper!

  8. Stephanie

Didn’t tide already do this 2 years ago when their 50oz bottle became a 40oz?

  9. Sue

Thanks for the info! Good to know. Same with tuna, from 6oz to 5oz.

  10. Thelma

Tide is so ridiculously expensive I haven’t bought it in years. Why on earth do they think their product is so superior? Detergent is detergent. That will be the day I pay fifteen dollars for a stupid bottle of detergent.

    • Bunny

Only buy Tide at BJs when can stack a mfg coupon along with a BJs coupon.

Won’t buy it under any other circumstances because it is so ridiculously expensive like you say Thelma!

    • J

I’ve gotten $1 bottles of Tide (40-50 oz depending on the store) twice within the last few months at cvs & riteaid. You just gotta be smart and catch the sales. And Tide is the best, bar none.

      • Kelly

I’d prefer Purex over Tide any day of the week!

  11. Nicole

Im highly allergic to tide, gain and cheer so p&g never gets my $ for laundry care. Lol! Unfortunately this is the norm for retail to keep you as a customer.

  12. Charisse

P&G is also doing this with the new Pampers packaging. I bought a new and old one at the same time and realized when I got home that the new packaging had 4 fewer diapers per jumbo pack. Sigh.

  13. Brittany

I use up and up diapers from Target unless I can get Huggies or pampers for next to nothing. I highly recommend them!

    • Rose

I love Up & Up diapers!!!

      • Brandy

We just stated using them at night. I cloth diaper during the day. They’ve been awesome!!

  14. Valerie Metcalf

The worst was a couple of years ago when Pepsi plastic bottles went from 24 ounces to 16 ounces for the same price!!!!! Of course, I still buy it, LOL!

    • Becky

And that’s exactly why they do it! Loyal customers (or addicted ones) will still buy it! 🙂

  15. Carrie

Wow! That article makes me so glad that I make my own laundry detergent. Started last year and have never looked back.

  16. Ashley

Do you remember when Tide started their eco friendly concentrated bottles. The bottles used to be bigger but then they said you don’t need to use as much so the bottles got smaller? Well I called and said “How are we supposed to know if this is true are not? How do we know if you truly concentrated this or you are just trying to sell us less at the same price?” The guy told me I would just have to take their word for it. Well then…

  17. Mary

Lays also reduced the size of their potatoe chips recently. The bags were around 10 or 10 1/2 ozs and now they are 9 1/2 ozs.

  18. Jenn

I love making my own and haven’t bought it in a while!!!

  19. Sarah

Consumers have not been aware that this has been going on for the past few years with every product – including soups (cream of mushroom for example) and cranberry sauce that is used in recipes! items that used to be 16 ounces are now 15 ounces. Even juice that was 64 ounces – now 59! Many of these items have had PRICE INCREASES at the same time that the packages are smaller!

  20. Danielle

This happened with Dawn Dish soap a year or two ago. Those small bottles we like to get at CVS and Walgreens with a sale and coupon went from 10 oz to 9 oz

  21. kia poynter

It makes me glad I stocked up when they were $0.87 after coupons at Rite Aid!

  22. Tiffany

Even candy bars were downsized from a 10pk to an 8pk and now even 6pks for $1.00 or more and are smaller!!

  23. Melissa

So am I the only one who noticed that the actually cardboard toilet paper roll inside it is larger so it holds less paper but looks just as big as it used to

  24. Moria

Proctor & Gamble is doing this with a lot of their products. Pampers diapers & wipes are the same price, but you now get less per pack than before-very frustrating!

  25. Melanie

I understand Tide is a leader in the laundry detergent sector as it relates to quality, but it is becoming more & more unattainable for so many people like myself. With the disappearance of the middle class, certain products are becoming more and more out of reach. I can’t help but wonder how much “greed” might be affecting these marketing decisions versus an actual need for the company.

  26. Amanda

It’s life. We better all get used to it

  27. Tina

I try not to use any P&G products as they do animal testing.
