Happy Friday: Homemade Magnetic Scrabble Game
Sent from reader, Mary:
I’m a mom of three five year olds who are learning to read and spell so I made up a fun magnetic Scrabble game to play on my refrigerator to keep the kids excited about reading this summer (and busy while I cook dinner). I have also found that it is a great way to leave my husband silly messages in the morning.
I found an old Scrabble game with lots of pieces missing in my mom’s closet (you could find one very cheap at a thrift store). Then, I cut up junk advertising magnets (could use a roll of magnetic tape if you don’t want to cut up junk magnets) and used a hot glue gun to attach the magnet pieces to the back of the Scrabble tiles. Ta da! A free magnetic Scrabble board to provide hours of fun and learning this summer!
HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

Very unique idea! !
Very cute idea! Thanks for sharing, I think I will try this when we move. 🙂
Adorable! I will remember this for when I have grandchildren
Hola!! I love this website, help me to save some money for my family. I was wondering if anybody knows when the school supplies sales are gonna be, i have two boys, and the school supplies list for the school is huge, I need to find great deals, on school supplies and also in school clothes.
I think they start first week or two of July. 🙂
Collin always post the school supply sales, but they don’t usually start until end of July/August.
what a fun idea but remember to supervise magnets can be very dangerous if swallowed
Really???
Yes really. They can be swallowed either together or at separate times and end up sticking to eachother within a childs body. They can cause all kinds of trouble tearing through organs and causing irreparable damage.
Thank you, Jane. This was exactly my thought. I’ve seen even my oldest (7) put stuff in her mouth. I avoid anything that I can to avoid a trip to the ER. Yikes!
you are confusing rare earth magnets with these standard magnets.
junk magnets from advertising would be no more harmful than swallowing a similar-sized piece of cardboard. of course that wouldn’t be pleasant, but it has nothing to do with it being a magnet.
You are incorrect. All magnets are potentially dangerous. I’m sure these are probably very well attached, and it’s a darling project; however, the poster who mentioned supervision was entirely correct, as per the American Academy of Pediatrics
https://www.aap.org/en-us/advocacy-and-policy/federal-advocacy/Pages/AAP-Alerts-Pediatricians-to-Dangers-of-Magnet-Ingestions.aspx
Love this idea! I could see this being a big hit with kids! And it’s a great way to recycle a game with missing pieces.
How fun!
cute idea! and loved that you recycled advertising magnets. i always save my old ones. if you can’t find a used game you can buy a bag of just the letter tiles on Amazon. search: scrabble tiles.
Thanks for the tip! The game I found is missing all the c tiles and my son’s name starts with c, so he was pretty sad. We have temporarily converted the blank tile to a c. I will definitely look for some more tiles!
I did this with my sons sight words. I printed them out. laminated them and used those ad magnets so he could make sentences.
I love this idea! You could also buy a cookie sheet at the dollar store and take this in the car for road trips!
AGH!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! Cookie sheet…What a smart cookie yourself. Thanks! 😉
This is a great idea! I am in the process of DEEP cleaning, organizing and getting rid of clutter and I took a look at the side of our fridge and thought: what in the world? When did I accumulate so many junk magnets! It did not occur to me to use them for something like this or for pictures! 🙂
U know u can buy magnetic letters at the dollar store? Why go thru the trouble of doing this? Just curious.
Its about using what you have not buying more stuff
magnetic plastic letters don’t also help with math. my daughter adds up the “score” of her spelling words and gets the added dimension of feeling like she’s playing a game, adding, and spelling.
Not everyone has the extra money to go buy several packs of letters (even at the $ store). It makes much more sense to use up things around the house, especially things you’d throw out anyway (like games with missing pieces and junk magnets).
because this is way cuter.
Fantastic, creative and thrifty idea! Thanks for sharing.
I love it! I have used the old abc letters to play this with my older sons for almost 2 decades! my little kids have run away with all the magnets! But this would be awesome! yardsales here i come!! lol
Great idea. I’ve been looking for a cheap old scrabble game forever and I finally found one at a rummage sale today! I’m going to a bridal shower next weekend for a bride who loves scrabble. I just may have to make a set of these and give them to her!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m impressed at your creativity, but I’m FAR more impressed that you did all this work while balancing three energetic 5-year-olds! I have one 5-year-old and I can’t imagine having that extra time with 3 of them! lol Way to go, Mom!
AMEN to that!! 🙂
