  1. Trena

what’s the difference between this and Roku?

  2. Eliza

i don’t see the discounted price? It still shows as $39??

    • nicolegammeter

      Hi Eliza!

If you’re a Prime member, the discount will appear at checkout.

    • Trena

you have to add it to your cart

    • courtney

Is it still this price?? Because I’m having the same problem!! I’m a prime member and I added it to cart and it’s still $39 . . . I even went to checkout to see if that would change? What am I doing wrong? Lol

      • Denise

The price went back up, this price was only good for the last 2 days.

        • courtney

Thank you, i noticed that after I posted!! Reading helps sometimes haha!! 🙂

  3. Angie

I’m looking to get rid of cable is this a good option.

    • Amanda

YES!! I cancelled my cable and bought a apple tv (which is similar to this but owned by apple) and I haven’t missed cable once! Saves me $1200 annually

      • angie

what is a good antenna to get?

      • Andre

How do you access broadband internet to your place? And how fast is the speed?

  4. brooke

How do these things work? Been wanting to try these things. I can do $20. Any input is much appreciated.

    • YG

It is similar to chromecast. Just plugged it to your TV (hdmi input) and do the on screen set up for wifi and u are set to go. You can access netflix, huluplus, amazon prime videos (if u have subscriptions to those sites). Channels like Pandora, crunchyroll, etc (that don’t require subscriptions) will be free. Chromecast is controlled by devices (ipad, iphone, android phones, etc) while this one controlled by remote control provided. Hope this helps!

      • Bev

Thanks YG for all your info on this item – very helpful.

      • Dev

YG, thanks for the additional info. Amazon should cut you in on the profits 🙂

      • Mindy

Do you have to be an Amazon Prime member to use this??

        • Andre

As a AMZNPrime member, you have the opportunity to get the $19 today and tomorrow. I don’t see the need to be a Prime member; you’d pay $39 for the stick and wouldn’t have access to Prime Video nor Prime Music.

          • Sonya

            ?

            • Andre

You do not have to continue membership as Prime member in order to use the Fire stick. Amazon is more than happy to take your $$$, mber or not, while you stream away paid purchases from their store or continue to stream from video provider channels, such as Netflix, etc.

  5. Amber

Awesome!! Thank you Colin!! I ordered 2! My in-laws have Chromecast and LOVE it! Since I’m a Prime member it was a pain to stream tv shows and movies on the TV…problem solved!!!!! (the 2nd will be a Christmas present for my parents!) Woot!

PS – If you don’t care if it gets to you in 2 days and you opt for the slower shipping they give you a $1 kindle credit!

    • JulieA

You can use it for paperback & hardback books too!

    • Erika

I read the Amazon page on it, it mentioned that it comes programmed to your prime account so I am thinking it may not work to buy as a present.

      • Erika

Some people on other forums are saying that if you check out the purchase as a gift, it will not come tied to your account.

        • nicolegammeter

          You’re welcome, Amber! 🙂

  6. Katherine

Hmm. I have the Amazon Fire TV right now (love it!), trying to understand what the Fire TV Stick will do that the Amazon Fire TV doesn’t do??

    • YG

Same thing but fire tv prob capture better wifi signal so streaming is smooth. With chromecast at times can be choppy (if ur router too far). This stick is similar to chromecast but it has remote control. It is more portable than fire tv. U can go travel with the stick easily. I move my chromecast as opposed to roku more often.

      • Katherine

Thank you so much, YG. I think for now, I will hold off and stick with just using my Amazon Fire TV, the streaming is good and if we travel, we use the Kindle. Thanks again.

  7. tennille

yes, I’d love any extra tips too! Is there a charge for using it after its purchased other than the monthly subscriptions to Netflix, etc?

    • YG

      No.

  8. Denise

Okay, so will this make it so I don’t have to drape the cord across the room to the tv from my Kindle? Will I also have to still access the HDMI from my cable remote? I just want to be sure it’s worth it. Also, should I get two one for each TV I have? Thank you!

    • YG

The device is like usb stick so no more cord to your kindle. U just plugged it in to your hdmi input. If it’s anything like chromecast, it will need power outlet or usb port to power it. Ur TV should have a few hdmi inputs so u can still access your cable. Just changed the input source.

  9. Bridget

Do you need a smart tv for this? Or does it just need to be a hd with usb connector?

    • Jo

      Good question!

    • YG

Just need regular TV with hdmi input.

    • YG

It does not say it comes with power cable so i assume it is standard electronic device with power cable with option plugging it to usb port on your tv to power it.

      • Gale

The photo caption says FireStick cannot be powered directly by your HDTV and should be plugged into your wall.

  10. Amanda C

How exciting and COOL! Thank you so much Collin!!! I can’t WAIT to give this to my husband for Christmas!!!! (if we can wait that long 😉 )

    • nicolegammeter

      You’re so welcome, Amanda! 🙂

  11. katie

Wow! This is just what I’ve been needing. I love the Amazon Prime Instant Video selections but have been unable to find a way to get them onto my tv. This will give my son’s eyes a rest from watching the ipad so close and now we can comfortably watch together. Mr.Rogers on the big screen, here we come!!! 😉

  12. Julie

My question is when my daughter went on Netflex, it burned alot of my data package that month, (is it worth it to get this if Im going to always go over my data package)? Not quite sure really how that works?

    • Lilly

      What data package?

    • Julie

I would not get it if you don’t have unlimited data. Streaming video on any device uses lots of data. We got rid of DirecTV and used the money we saved to switch over to high-speed DSL through our phone company. Even with the Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions, we are still saving money over what we were paying DirecTV.

    • YG

U plugged it in to your TV and uses home wifi so no data consumed from your mobile phone.

    • Bobbi

You can change the settings on your Netflix account so streaming will use less data. It supposedly changes the picture quality, but I don’t even notice.

      • Lilia

How do you do that ?

        • Andre

You’ll need to sign into the account settings on your computer. Check the Help section on changing “bit-rate” within the settings area. Also, sending an email or starting a chat help session can get you to the setting to change up so you don’t deplete your data limit.

  13. erin

    Julie,
This is just a ‘vehicle’ for streaming media. it will still effect your data plan.

  14. mandy

For the peeps who have cut their cable- how do you watch current shows? I have both Prime and Netflix but love watching The Walking Dead and American Horror Story and The Vampire Diaries and their new seasons just started and would hate to have to buy each episode on Amazon or wait for it to come out on Netflix. But I wouldn’t mind kissing cable goodbye if I could watch current shows?!?!

    • Lilly

      Hulu (:

      • mandy

I will have to check Hulu out. Thanks!!!!

    • Pinki

You can watch television shows on television network websites.

    • Melissa

For local tv channels including the network (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) we used a good old fashioned rabbit-ears tv antenna. I think we got ours at Radio Shack.

    • Bethanie

HuluPlus or couchtuner.com for current episodes

      • vicki

we LOVE couchtuner.com! we are AMC (mainly Mad Men) fans and watch every current episode the next night after it’s aired. no different than using our TiVo 🙂

    • Shanna Anderson

Love Hulu most new shows are availabe the next day after they air on tv.

    • YG

Huluplus has most of them, except for Walking Dead.

      • Bobbi

Yes, my husband cut our DirecTV package so we no longer have AMC. I had to wait for the new season to start so I could watch last season on Netflix. 🙁

        • YG

Yeah. One of the reasons I keep very basic cable. Walking dead!!!

  15. deanna

Am I correct in assuming that you lose the ability to watch football games if you switch from cable to this?

    • Molly

I’m wondering this too. I’m looking for a way to save but still be able to watch sports. Trying to watch the Packer game in MN is near impossible even with Comcast!

      • Bobbi

This is why we have DirecTV. We have NFL Sunday Ticket so we can watch the Packers here in So IL. 🙂

    • Angie

That is one thing that is stopping me too. Can you access the nbc, cbs, etc… Websites or apps thru this product

      • laura

We use Fire TV. It has the WatchESPN app. All you need to do is borrow someone’s login id for a cable provider like dish or directv to live stream espn. They have to have that cable package, though. We borrowed my parents info and have been able to watch almost all the football games. Only way we were able to cut cable.

        • Andre

“Borrowing” an ID is akin to access theft; no need to stoke the fires, as comparison of lending TVEverywhere access (login from the cable/dish providers) versus subscribing and having legitimate access have been well been debated. I’ve found that if you’re given access to the account, say by getting a sub-account with a new email address from Comcast, you’re not borrowing it, but a full-fledged additional member with credentials to use at your whimsy 😉

      • sarah

We recently bought a roku and love it! For nbc, cbs, fox, and pbs we have an antenna mounted on our roof. The picture is really clear because all of the networks broadcast in digital now. No more rabbit ears and fuzzy pictures like it used to be. We rarely watch the network channels though, because we have so many options on amazon and netflix.

    • Andre

You’ll won’t have access to ESPN or the channels that show games; FOX CBS and NBC NFL games are free to receive on Thur/Sun as they are broadcasted over-the-air.

  16. Alyson

Does the stick itself connect to WiFi or do you have to have a Smart TV to get it to work?

    • Andre

You’ll be able to take steps to set-up and link to your WiFi network, just like setting up a smartphone or tablet in your possession.

  17. Heidi

Awesome, Colin. My Roku was killed by a lightning strike and I’ve been waiting to replace but this deal is too good to pass up and looks like it will do an excellent job in place of the Roku. Even though it comes out on 11/19, my estimated delivery date is not until 12/3. They must be getting slammed with orders.

  18. Blythe

Does anyone know if this gives you the ability to have parental controls to turn certain things off? With Apple TV I’m able to to control what contect is acceptable for our family, love it! But, we are not able to use amazon prime thru out Apple TV…so wondering if this might work?

    • Amanda

Blythe, you can use Amazon Prime through the Apple TV. I open the Apple TV remote on my phone, then open the Amazon Instant Video App. Once I choose my show or movie in the amazon app, I have the option to play though the apple TV once the show starts on my phone.

    • Andre

Wishing the Amazon Instant Video settings, there should be parental controls. Will have to look-see on their full website.

  19. Tara

Does anyone know if this still works without Amazon Prime? I have Prime now but am not sure I will renew.

    • Denise

I would also love to know the answer to this one! If anyone can help, that would be great!

    • Andre

Get in for the $19 offer; if you decide not to renew, you won’t have access to the Prime Video and Music libraries. But you could still purchase video and music to own and have it streamed on the Fire. Think of this as a Kindle for your TV; you don’t need Prime to read books, although you won’t have access to the Kindle Lending Library…

      • Tara

Thanks for chiming in! That’s helpful. 🙂

  20. Nichole

Chromecast works the same way. I purchased mine from Groupon the other day for $19.00. it was refurbished, plus used a discount they were offering site wide – like 15 or 20% off. Works like a charm, couldn’t be happier.

  21. Caroline

Wondering if there is any advantage to this over streaming my Prime Videos through the Wii? Thanks!

    • Andre

HDMI high-definition would be one advantage. Does the Wii connect through those cables that have a bunch of connectors? I haven’t used my Wii in a few years…

  22. Tara

can it stream from your ipad or just work with kindle?

    • Andre

There should be a compatible iPad/iPhone/iPod touch app by the time this delivers. I don’t think you need a Kindle exclusively to operate this. There’s an included remote control in this offer.

  23. Colleen

This is so awesome – thanks for posting!! We totally needed something like this to stream Netflix for the kids’ TV. They will love watching their shows!!

    • Andre

And with Amazon paired up with the MTV Networks (all the Nickelodeon shows!) it’s a great time to be a kid. Just make sure to lock out all the Real World and Snooki/JWoww shows 😉

  24. Roanne

I am still confused…I have dish network right now. And wireless wifi. I do not have wifi on my TV though since it is spendy to get the device needed from Dish Network. Right now we are able to use our Netflix or Prime though our wii on one tv since it is a pain to hook up and unhook the wii for different TV’s. We could use the kindle for the other tv, but since my son has way too many games on it, the streaming is always interrupted. Will this device make the tv it is plugged into internet capable for Netflix, prime, AND dishnet…and will it not disrupt my dishnet?

    • Andre

Once you plug the stick into the back of the TV, there won’t be a need to lug the Wii around; select the input for the Fire stick and then you should have access to the streaming channels. Not sure if DishNet will be available on the Amazon service, but as promoted you will see Netflix and most definitely the Amazon Video library. Is your broadband/wireless service fast enough to carry streaming? I don’t think having too many in the Kindle will take a hit on watching shows via Wou or your future Fire stick; it’s the probably speed of the wifi connection holding you back.

      • Roanne

Thanks for helping. I think this would work great so that we can enjoy net and prime in the main living room and not just in the one room with the wii. I am still interested about the dishnet. They have movies and such for streaming also but you have to have your tv either wired to the internet or buy a device from them that makes your tv receive wireless. I was wondering if this will make that work too. As far as the kindle…it use to work great to watch shows on it…but then the more games he installed the slower it got and now takes forever to do ANYTHING on it. We live in the boonies so as am sure service is not as fast as most. Again…thanks!

        • Andre

Sounds like that Dish device is made and created by them; you wouldn’t get that level of access with the Fire stick. You’d have to get it from them and use it on your service. Is it called the Hopper or something like that?

  25. Angie

Can you watch cbs shows on hulu?

    • Andre

Their older catalog is on Hulu. CBS just announced their stand-alone Internet streaming service, at $7.99/month. No football, all their shows. Local live streaming if you’re in specific CBS cities.

  26. ana

I would really appreciate anyone’s help …..We have AT&T U-verse (getting the tv channels and wifi in one). I want to try the Fire TV Stick first before canceling my account. Would i be able to do that or would plugging in the fire stick would mess-up my u-verse set up?

    • Andre

U-Verse won’t get “messed-up”; it’s just another internet device that needs to access your wifi network in order to work. Take advantage of the 30-day return policy of Amazon and give it a shot!

  27. Linda

Would this offer more options than my Vizio smart TV or would it be the same thing?

    • Andre

I see some overlap; does Vizio have a Amazon Prime Video app? I haven’t kept up with the various services Vizio has, as we’re a Samsung SmartTV family here. Otherwise, having AMZN Prime Video/Music access would be the advantage when having this stick.

  28. Yolanda

Thanks Collin! I ordered 2! I cut my cable cord a few months ago and I purchased the Roku 3. I am glad you posted this deal so now I can watch Tv in my bedroom!

  29. Jill

I’ve checked tons of articles and no one specifies whether this can be powered without an additional cord or if it pulls the power from the tv input like the newer roku models. Maybe in time there will be more info but since you don’t get charged until it ships (and is now not expected until mid December) might as well take the deal while it’s here and cancel if you don’t like the power supply once it’s specified

    • Andre

The picture step-by-steps show that there needs to be power supplies to the stick. It’s pretty early, but best guesstimate that the stick will need to be plugged in to power or using the USB into the TV for a source of power. Did the Roku stick get its power from the HDMI port itself? I set one up for a friend this past spring, and forgot what powers it.

      • Jill

The original roku sticks had a power code but the newer ones pull power from the tv

  30. mandmrogers

Can I download the TCM app on this?

  31. MCouzens

So glad I did not purchase the Chromecast deal from a few days ago. This has a few more options that will be perfect for our family. I can’t wait to try it out. Thank you Collin!

  32. Katie

Yay! Hubs said yes to ordering this and got the deal this morning. Estimated shipping says dec 22nd so looks like this might end up being a nice little christmas present for the family from santa 🙂

  33. Tracy

I’ve been wanting to move away from cable so this looks like a great deal. My question though is: my husband loves football, both NFL and college, how do you pick up games not on one of the 3 major networks?

    • Amie

We cut cable and went with Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. For watching sports we purchased an antenna. We put it in our window and with it we get NBC, CBS, and ABC so my husband can watch football and I can watch Chicago Fire when it airs instead of waiting for the next day :). We only paid $9.99 for it and it works great!

      • Amie

Sorry-I actually re read your question and you said NOT on one of the three major networks. Sorry. That’s a harder one. To do that you could look into the ESPN app but I believe that’s just an extension of your current cable package. Most likely you will still have to have cable/dish to watch sports on other networks.

  34. debi

what is the difference between this and the Roku3 /

  35. Gayla

I am a prime member. I signed in. I added to my cart and hit check out but it is still $39. What did I do wrong?

  36. Tori Fox

The price is still $39 even once I go to check out and I am logged into my Prime account?

  37. Edward Appelbaum

i plug in to my tv which is on dish network; i can’t get the screen to come up on the tv that will show the code that is the code i have on my computer
