Sent from reader, Heather:

In our family, it is a tradition to make our own costumes. One of my favorite memories growing up as a child in a family with a very limited budget was my mom always dragging out her bins of supplies and scraps and coming up with the most creative and unique costumes.

Now that I’m a mom myself, I want to pass that tradition onto my kids and leave them with those warm fuzzy memories of mom sewing their costumes with love. But these days, fabric and materials are many times much more expensive than just buying a costume from the store. Thanks to tips from Hip2Save over the past several years, I’ve been able to make each of my kid’s costumes for minimal cost but still leave a huge impact on their hearts.

This year, my youngest who is a bomber pilot just cost me the price of his bomber hat which I found at a consignment store for $6 (I had a credit there so it was actually free) and the cost of some paper and spray paint (about $4). He already had the jacket which inspired the idea and the pants in his closet so it ended up costing me only $4 out of pocket.

My other son wanted to be spider man and all I had to do was find some cheap sweats, ($3.80 at Walmart) and a half yard of felt ($1.50 from Joanns with a coupon) and some puff paint (Another $1.75 from Michael’s with another coupon) so for well under $10 I was able to make him a fun and unique costume that I hope he will always remember!

Thank you Hip2Save for always helping us moms stretch our dollar so we can focus on the things that matter most in our lives, our family~~!! :o)

Homemade costumes are the best. I always love seeing the creativity of the not store bought costumes. Great work!

  8. Traci

I love homemade costumes and seeing what people come up with. Store bought ones are just so blah and chintzy.
We made a Sponge Bob out of a fan box. Basically just paint and paper and glue. Turned out super-cute.
I remember the feeling of going to sleep the night before Halloween with a semi-crafted costume and waking up to see that my mom had worked her
magic late at night. And the results would be wonderful.

Awesome! I love them both! We made Olaf and Elsa costumes at our house and the kids loved them! We got so many complements and I only spent around $5 on Olaf and $10 on Elsa so that makes Mommy happy too!

  31. April

They look so happy you are an awesome mom!

  32. Kayla

Love it! My grandma always made my sister and me Halloween costumes (in addition to Easter dresses, Christmas dresses, etc) and I always appreciated them. There were a few Halloweens I bought costumes from the store but since she passed away I’ve been making my own. This year I bought a red unitard and some felt and went as a lobster – everyone loved it! Being crafty and a couponer really go hand in hand!
