Check out this email I received from Hip2Save reader, Melissa…

Heads-up for tax season! When I did my taxes on H&R Block, they offered me a 5% additional refund for any part of my refund that I took in gift cards. If I would’ve taken my entire refund in gift cards, I would have gotten an extra $200 refund. They had lots of different options for gift cards, including Target where I do most of my grocery shopping so I felt like that was a good deal!

TurboTax offered me a 10% bonus if I put part or all of my refund on Amazon cards, fyi.

Same here…I opted to use $500 of my refund…so I get a $550 Amazon gift card for next Christmas 🙂

I did that last year. I’m glad to hear they’re offering it again. Thanks!

I was just coming to mention this! That’s a great idea Rainbow!

I always use freetaxusa.com for my e-filing… its always no charge for the software, plus free federal and super cheap state (mine was $11)… plus 25% back through ebates. This gift card bonus is a nice offer too though

But that’s not 25% back of what your refund was, it’s just 25% back of what you pay to have your taxes done. So if you use the free version and even if you pay to file your state taxes that’s only a few dollars. Still a few dollars is better than nothing.

If only our taxes weren’t going to be so complicated this year.

Any idea why it will not let me choose the free option after I sign in to my previous account? I have used h and r block a few times. Wondering if the basic free option is only for new customers or something?

Check your local walmart. Mine has a Jackson Hiewitt in it and they are offering a $50 walmart gift card if you choose to file with Jackson Hiewitt 🙂

I was thinking about Jackson Hewitt at Wal mart deal but heard Jackson Hewitt is pretty expensive

If only we were getting a refund

As someone who started out working for H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt before going into business for myself, I can tell you there is a reason they can off you an extra 10% or a $50 gift card. Their fees border on illegal. Go to a local tax preparer. It will usually be the cheapest, and they will be there as a free resource throughout the year for you, while block and Hewitt close up 75% or locations after April 15.
