Happy Friday: Budget-Friendly Garden Makeover
Sent from reader, Laura:
I am a work-at-home mom of 3 girls (ages 10, 8, 4). We have a small vegetable garden in raised beds, but wanted to do something this year to make it more fun and kid-friendly. Spring has finally come to Ohio, so I decided to try my hand at “up-cycling” second-hand items into garden treasures using my VERY basic carpentry skills and lots of spray paint!
I purchased the chairs for $5 each and the workbench for $35 from my local Facebook buy/sell/trade page. I also purchased the three metal stars and blue peg decor for a total of $5 from the same page. My husband cut the ends off the workbench and attached fence pickets ($1.25/each – Home Depot sale and cut to fit at the store) to the back, reinforcing them with extra wood cut from the bottom of the pickets; we spray painted the entire piece a neutral tan. I made a shelf from one of the extra wood pieces and spray painted the peg decor and stars to match. A few finishing touches – 88 cent pots hung for a $2 piece of rebar using S hooks, a $5 garden bucket – and it was complete!
The chairs were even easier! I removed the seats and sprayed the entire chair with paint. I have a ton of plastic pots in my garage from previous years – I found two that fit snugly in the seat area, painted them to match, and voila! Two beautiful and whimsical new planters!
The entire project, including all supplies, cost less than $100. My girls loved helping pick the colors and supplies, and the whole thing took less then two days with paint drying time. I love being able to beautify our garden and also teach our girls about re-using and re-purposing items to give them new life, all while saving money!!
HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

Very cool! I’m in Ohio too. We had ”spring” for a few days, then it snowed again yesterday! Here’s hoping it gets warm again in the coming weeks, then maybe I could attempt something similar.
Ohio girl here too! Sooo tired of the cold! Come on spring!!!
So cute! Love love love reusing and repurposing things! Fantastic job!
Nice job, Laura! I love it – esp the reusing, upcycling and repurposing!
My mom painted a tire, hung it from a tree and planted flowers in it. Very cute 🙂
Very cute.
Love it!
Great job & great memories for your girls. 😃😊
Great job! Love it!!
So Very CREATIVE
Looks amazing! And it’s such a great project for the whole family. FYI… I did the same project with an old chair. A year later, it’s a pile of sticks! Indoor furniture out in the elements doesn’t last long. 🙁
Very nice and the bench is super cute. That bench could have many uses and could easily change the paint color, say for holidays or a party theme. Thanks for sharing!
Love it! I have all those pieces kicking around doing nothing. Totally love it. Im going to use ours for gardening in our pallet garden and an outdoor bar for entertaining!
