I work for an optometrist, and our office charges for an exam, but the contact lenses that you try on in the office are free and yours to keep. I guess I figured every office was the same way? Also, Air optix lenses are a monthly lens, so that “free months supply” is actually just 1 pair-the pair you get for free in the dr’s office anyhow.
I was thinking the same thing- the coupon is really a bit of a scam. You get a free pair when you go to the eye doctors anyways, they are not going to give you a second pair for free.
Never been to a doc that didn’t give a pair of clear to test out. These coupons are more of advertising than actually needing it – you won’t get colors anyways, to take home.
These contacts are to be worn for a month, then thrown out.
1 month = 1 pair.
My thoughts exactly!
Yes. Every office is this way and this “free trial” thing is kind of just a way to get you to go to your doctor and ask to try this brand — which may not be the best brand for you anyway.
…so would I be able to get the free pair without paying for another eye exam? My current Rx is good through the end of Sept. and I could really use these. Last year my eye Dr gave me 2 trial pair that should have been replaced after 2 weeks and I’m having to make them last for 6 months instead. Sadly, My vision insurance doesn’t cover anything!!
You will need a fitting. Each brand fits differently
You’re running the risk of a serious eye infection that could permanently damage your eyes and permanently impair your eyesight by overwearing or “stretching” the life of your contact lenses. You do not “have to make them last for 6 months” you are choosing to do so. You do not HAVE to wear contact lenses. Please get some glasses and stick to those if you can’t afford contact lenses. And yes…I am an optometrist and have had to counsel patients when they do this sort of thing to themselves and get a corneal ulcer. I could go on and on but won’t.
PLEASE do not do that. You are risking your vision by overwearing contacts. My husband is an eye doctor and sees people like you all the time who get infections or even blisters on their eyes from overwearing contacts. If you cannot afford them, don’t wear them, or get new vision insurance!
Also contacts wear down (change shape) with use, not using properly can alter your vision – which can be permanent. The manufacturer gives a how to use statement to keep one healthy.
Not all insurances can cover everything.
Will say with the Air Optix Colors are expensive since they are made differently than other soft contacts – brand does not allow the price to go below a certain amount. Other brands will allow a discount.
Not to scare you but my husband (an optometrist) has had people lose their vision from “making contact lenses last” longer than what they are intended for. It’s serious stuff…one girl was only 22 and is now blind in one eye! ):
Funny Jeaneane that we posted basically at the same time. It is very sad and VERY painful as well. Not worth the potential corneal transplant to save a few bucks. And of course it’s always those that say “but I’d been doing this for years”…well…I say…”Yes and it finally caught up with you”.
Why do you have to pay extra at your exam to get contacts?
Contact lenses are a medical device as they sit directly on your eye and as such more work is involved in their fitting so there is a fee charged by your doctor to take you thru the process of ensuring the specific brand, base curve, diameter, and material of the contact lens is appropriate for wear on your particular eye. As more time is required for this extra work, which is above the regular examination for glasses and health of the eye, a fee is charged yearly for the initial fit and each subsequent yearly evaluation.
