Off topic but does anyone know what’s the cheapest way to get Halloween candy (ie: club store or lots of coupons) and how much do you usually get? We have a ton of kids on our road and this is my and my husband’s first year handing out candy.

WOW! You are going to have SO much fun!

It sort of depends on a lot of things. Is it important to you that you hand out the same treat, or do you want a bowl of variety(meaning you buy a bag here with a coupon, and then there with a coupon? How many is “a ton of kids” and do you personally know them? Do you get a little thrill seeing them go “awesome!” when they get the candy?

Tip: if you let them choose from a bowl it will take absolutely forever, and kids will cluster and grab and create a mob/traffic blob on your doorstep. Little kids will get squished 🙁

Tip: Remember the weather. Wet and/or cold will lower your number. Also consider if your neighborhood is flat, are there sidewalks, is it well lit? Ask a few neighbors how many they had last year. And if your street has a lot of decorations, that will attract more people from outside your community. Sometimes, people will load up vans and dump LOTS of extra kids in your neighborhood.

Tip: Think outside the box! It doesn’t have to be candy! I’ve given out oreo packs, cheezit packs (great deal at SamsClub, about 7 cents per pack), crayons bought at back-2-school clearance, etc.

Tip: You’ll get some SUPER-cute very-little kids. I make ten “specials” to hand out for “polite attitude” or “good helper” (for the ones taking care of little siblings) like a giant lollipop with ribbon, or the giant candy-bars or boxed “movie” candy with ribbon, or a cluster of tootsie-pops from the DollarTree. Not for every kid, but enough to make ten kids speechless!

Personally, I know myself. Left to my own devices, I hand out more than one piece per kid. I solve my own problem by just buying cases at SamsClub so that each kid gets “one” but the one is bigger enough that I don’t feel sad about it. Full size starburst aren’t a bad deal. This year, we’re going candy canes (and “Santa” will open the door to hand them out).

Sorry this is so long. I just get very excited!

Sams has some name bag mix starting at 5¢ each cheapest i have found even better than the target sale last week. My kids don’t eat this so I’m not sure what brand but do know it’s a name brand mix that I liked as a kid. Costco was more than sams pr piece for nearly the exact item mixes.
