I just had to share this because I am so disappointed with my local Kroger. After shopping there exclusively for groceries for 3 years and using printable coupons from coupons.com, I was informed while checking out that my Kroger is no longer accepting printed coupons. I was basically told that their coupon policy states that the manager (evidently the assistant manager checked me out) has the right to make their own coupon policy at any time and they do not have to disclose it. So I had no way of knowing before I checked out. I wouldn’t have bought some of my items had I known i couldn’t use my coupons. And of course there was a line of people behind me and, not only was I humiliated, but I couldn’t hold up the line by digging thru my already bagged groceries to find these items. So I got stuck paying full price. And not only that, after reviewing my receipt, i found that she over-charged me $10! I’m wondering if anyone else’s Kroger won’t accept coupons.com coupons? Im considering switching to Aldi and giving up coupons. πŸ™

Don’t be discouraged. All of us couponers have been in similar situations. I agree about not holding up people in line behind you, but you can go to Customer Service and have them take back your items and get your money back. In fact, you never know, you might find out that the cashier may have just made up her own rules and there is no such new policy. You can still take your coupon items back to Customer Service at your store and get your money back and resolve your 10.00 overcharge. Best of luck and keep on saving money with coupons!

In my experience, Kroger goes through “coupon crackdown” every couple years. Yes, managers can use their own discretion in regard to coupons, but I’ve never heard of a complete ban on IPs. My stores allow two like IPs and up to five like non-IPs. Once I was tossing all my expired Qs at the register of one store and the cashier told me to save them since they accept Qs up to a month past expiration. I was floored about that, and I began shopping at that particular store a bit more. Of course, the last time I went I was told that their policy had changed–no more expired coupons and they couldn’t accept coupons that wouldn’t scan. I didn’t recognize the cashier, so I asked where I could find out more about the policy, and he was unable to help but accepted several expired coupons anyway. I’ve found that managers at Kroger do a terrible job of coupon training, and I’m betting that the cashier was confused, which is why I try to stick with the coupon friendly “old-timers” at Kroger when I check out. Next time I am at the store, I will confirm the policy with the cashiers I know.

That said, you should definitely return to the store to get your $10 and speak to customer service about the coupon policy, tell them what you said here, and see if they will accept the coupons. If not, take the coupons to another Kroger for reimbursement and consider shopping at a different store. I’m not sure I’d give up couponing completely for Aldis–they have some really great prices, but I personally wouldn’t be able to get everything I want there and some of their prices are much higher than similar items combined with sales and coupons–but you might want to consider scaling back on couponing (depending upon how much you’re doing, of course). I’ve found that there are fewer mistakes, missed/forgotten coupons, and scrutiny if I do smaller orders throughout the week rather than one large order. Two like coupons make sense to me–I’d be suspicious of someone with a handful of the same Qs and I am not a fan of shelf clearers (it is hard enough to get sale items without battling hoarders and resellers for them)–so that’s my rule of thumb pretty much anywhere.

Sometimes couponing is tough; adapt accordingly. Good luck! Hopefully you had a confused/misinformed assistant manager checking you out (and yes, it happens!).

I had a Ralph’s (Kroger) employee tell me this once before at checkout. I only had a couple printed coupons that time so she took them, but said no more since they had someone doing coupon fraud there. The next time I went in they took printed coupons and always have since then. So I think the store had just had a bad coupon experience, but never actually changed their policy.

Thank you for listing the Clorox Back to School tip from Amanda – I was able to upload a receipt from Costco to the site and they responded 9 minutes later that they had accepted it. Got $2.00 back in my account and I redeemed via PayPal. I’m now waiting to receive that in my PP account πŸ™‚
