Macy'sIf you’re a frequent Macy’s shopper, you may be interested to know that Macy’s will be closing another 100 of their stores nationwide in early 2017 due to the rise and success of online shopping options. They have not yet announced what locations will be closing, but you may want to make plans to visit your local Macy’s soon as I’m sure they’ll be offering up various clearance deals throughout the closing process.

I hate to hear this. I love Macy’s.

  2. Melloddie

This isn’t surprising. Online shopping is very competitive these days. I think I do about 90% off my non grocery items all online. Food wise I’m still poker/prodder/sniffer… lol so I like to physically pick or my own food because buying, but maybe eventually that will change as well. Where there is lost jobs, there is also gained jobs like warehouse packaging /boxing /personels and of course delivery jobs. I hope there are more companies to compete with UPS/FedEx because sometimes they are so lousy but they are such huge companies they don’t care for customer complaints.

  3. Melissa

Did anyone find a list of the store locations to be closed?

    • Brittany

They will release it at a later date.

      • peepslob

Thank you, I kept searching today, but couldn’t find anything 🙂

While this is sad for everyone who is losing their jobs I think Macy’s needs to work on their online issues rather than in store (in store they are fine). Not only do they usually have 10 dollar shipping for 2 week shipping and delivery times (just like Victoria secret) but online customer service is terrible. I have literally missed my wedding pearl earrings because Macy’s shipped a day later than expected and my mother in laws Christmas gift (expected day before we left to go to Alabama) and customer service did nothing for me. I even paid for expedited shipping to Macy’s so my earrings would be there on time (10 dollars more) and all they did was offer to pay expedited shipping back (not whole shipping charge of 20 dollars). They really need to work on their online stores as I am terrified to order from them online.

    • Karen

I agree with you – Macy’s online customer service is horrible. I love shopping in store, but I refuse to purchase online from them – I’ve had more problems than I can count!! Awful.

    • Jenn

I agree, I paid for expedited shipping ($22) for dresses for my Mom’s funeral right around Christmas and they lost the dresses and offered nothing. I was so overwhelmed and had no time or place to find a plus size dress to bury my Mom in. Miraculously, the original box appeared just in time for her services.

      • Misty

That is horrible! I am so sorry that happened to you.

      • Jacki

Jenn, I am so sorry. I cannot believe there are others that paid for expedited shipping and couldn’t get it in 4 days! Most online stores ship and delivery in 2-3 days base shipping.
And I’m sorry that they offered nothing for you needing such an important dress for your mothers funeral. Not only does that show lack of ANY respect for the customer but it just added extra stress on you that you did not need. 🙁

  5. Laura

Maybe if they lowered their prices and brought back the quality it used to be – people would shop with them. 20-30 years ago – I loved Macy’s

  6. Sheila

Not surprised with so much available online. Their customer service has changed dramatically in past 6mo. so I personally will not miss it if they close ours.

  7. Casey Meyers

There shipping is $10.00 dollars which is ridicules. ☹️

  8. ❤️Grandma ❤️

I bet they never close the one at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota!!

  9. Kristin

It’s never good to hear people will be losing their jobs, but I’m not surprised. Our local Macy’s is a constant mess. The store itself is In a constant state of disrepair, there are clothes strewn everywhere, and it just looks rundown overall – as if the management simply doesn’t care. On top of that, fitting rooms are filthy, staples, safety pins all over and stacks of unwanted clothing. The bathrooms are plain disgusting – including not having soap, but instead a bottle of dollar store hand sanitizer on the counter. I mean.. really? Our last visit I was appalled at this supposedly more “upscale” store being so gross.

    • Natasha

Sounds like you’re describing the one at Fashion Square Mall in Orlando! You can’t even browse the clothing because so many items are jammed on one rack. Also it’s always hot and stuffy in there like they don’t run the air conditioning or something.

      • Ana

Lol that is definitely not my favorite Macys either! Millennia and Florida mall are nice.

      • peepslob

When I lived in Orlando, I use to go to Orlando Fashion Square Mall all the time.

  10. Ginger

The one in my mall is very nice. I have been wondering for years though how they stay in business. I hardly see anyone in the store. Maybe that is why it looks so nice. I think the prices are just way tooooo high. I would much rather shop Kohls, Elder Beerman, JC Penney’s or Sears.

  11. 4Ella

Just beware if you are shopping stores that are closing. My store had very good sale (that is was I thought was good) What they do, they will place high price tickets and then % off on that price so it makes you thing that you got a great deal, BUT if you go to regular store that is not closing the prices for exact same items are much lower and you still can use coupons on top of it. My husband got two winter coats and when I checked those same coats at Macy’s online we could of save over $100 not to mention cash back. But of course I could not return it because it was final sale 🙁

    • Erin

Many stores mark up MSRP in order to offer great “sales” (Kohls) or going-out-of-business “clearance” prices. Retailers count on customers not knowing (or not caring about) prices. There’s not a whole lot I buy without price checking. That’s one reason I dislike clearance posts–people tend to buy whether something is a good deal and could possibly be marked lower.

  12. Marie

They NEED to close the one in Bowling green, KY. What a trainwreck. Not up to date, they don’t honor pricing even if the tickets are marked sale prices if their registers don’t see it… I used to work for them and loved them. They never handled their online business well, but in-store I can still find some good deals (in Nashville).

…probably because they’ll be closing soon.

    • Michele

I found the best deals on baby and kids clothes at Vowling green Macy’s

      • Michele

        * I find the best baby clothes deals at Bowling Green Macy’s. Also a lot of great marked down women’s tops.

  13. Sarah

Buying clothes & shoes online is such a gamble for me. It hardly ever works out. I need to try things on, so the thought of all the brick & mortar stores going out of business drives me nuts!

    • LF

Me too!! I’ll order clothes for my kids online but rarely for myself. It’s just too big of a hassle to return/exchange. My son wanted some expensive gym shoes, went to the mall and tried them on, then I ordered online and saved $20 plus free shipping, kids footlocker. I don’t get it!

    • Melissa

I totally agree with you there. I think maybe one time in my entire life I have been really happy with clothing (other than bras or panties) or shoes I bought online without having tried the article on in a store first. Even when shopping in stores, I have a hard time finding things I really love and that look good on me without trying on maybe ten-15 items for every one that fits right. With shoes I seriously need a certain level of cushioning or they hurt my feet. So, as much I would love to be able to shop online for these items, it is totally irrational for me to do so because the odds are against clothing fitting me right. And I hate the hassle of returning items. Even if it is just a matter of popping in the mail to return the item, I still have to worry about the US Postal Service delivering back to the store, and the store crediting me for my return.

  14. Patty

I love Macy, hope they don’t close my store but I agree online shopping is hurting retail

  15. Rita

Wow – 94 Million people in the US without jobs, the lowest home ownership level in 51 years, GDP lowest ever, the highest level of Food Stamps usage ever… and some people attribute the store closings on customer service. Really people look around you, there are people really suffering in the economy the Democrats have created. In the last 8 years all economic indicators (with the exception of the lies on unemployment) have been really, really bad.

    • Melissa

      You are absolutely right

    • Jennifer

I was laid off and re-employed (after 18 months being unemployed) doubling my salary and buying a home. This isn’t a political blog.

      • Bethany

Exactly. Leave politics out of this!

  16. Cindy

    I totally agree with Rita!

  17. Did

I am not surprised. Macy’s by me is always a mess, dirty and depressing and many of the employees are untrained, unprofessional and customer service is a joke. I’m sure they are paying minimum wage and not much more.

The product quality is marginal, and I can get better deals on the same stuff at TJ Maxx. Always get a better deal online without having to wade through a mess and wait at a counter for an hour looking for someone to ring me up and be curt and rude while doing it.

The only brick and mortar clothing department store I will shop at anymore is Nordstrom. The customer service and return policy is awesome. Yes you pay more, but I consider it insurance for being able to return without penalty and get some qualified, deferential and polite help if needed. Also, the clothes last longer.

Otherwise, I don’t bother with brick and mortar “mid tier” dept. stores anymore.

  18. gilly

Macy’s has been laying people off since 2008, not honoring retirement benefits, and paying low wages. Bye Macy’s!

  19. Bethany

Sad that they’re closing. But my mom and I got tons of awesome display stuff when ours closed. Wondering about the one in the next county.

  20. Danielle

Not surprising given that the Macy’s in my (pretty nice) mall is not the greatest. If put it on par with Sears or Kmart.

  21. Susie

I really hate to see lost jobs, in the area we live most people have service type jobs because everything else has shuttered and moved overseas, banking and real estate have bottomed out too. It’s sort of a vicious cycle that’s eating itself. We shop more online because we NEED to pay the cheapest price for what we buy. That need drives customer count down in the brick and mortar locations which causes more unemployment. Sad.

  22. Nancy

Won’t go to another Macy’s clearance sale. Went to the one at Century 3 Mall in Pittsburgh. They wouldn’t take any coupons, even ones that came out that day in the paper. A clerk told us, Macy’s sold out all the inventory to a clearance company, they were no longer Macy’s. Sad to see employees lose their jobs!

  23. Victoria

I think it’s sad though I didn’t really shop there…sad to see empty anchors in malls though.

  24. Lolly

I agree that the appearance of Macy’s and the customer service has also declined, but I hope ours isn’t closing. It’s the only store with a whole WALL of size 11 shoes!!!!

  25. leah

I read an article a few weeks ago about Macy’s financial situation. The CEO said that the companies difficulties are partly due to people “lowering their standards” and shopping at discount retailers like TJMaxx instead of Macy’s. He is so out of touch it’s incredible. I wonder if he’s been in a TJ’s or Marshall’s lately. I bought a current season sweater at TJ’s for $50 that was $150 at Macy’s. Last month I bought Ralph Lauren driving flats for $39.99 @ Marshall’s that were at Macy’s for $79. One reason Macy’s is loosing business is because savy shoppers can find the same products elsewhere for reasonable prices. I have nothing but sympathy for the employees that are loosing their jobs. But I have to be a smart shopper and search for the best prices. I live in CT where you sink if you don’t bargain shop and watch your pennies.

  26. Colleen

I am also sad about people losing their jobs, but I am fed up with Macy’s. I’ve been a cardholder for more than 5+ years and recently had my number stolen. The lady ordered $500 in perfume and I had to file an appeal, close my card, etc. It’s been a nightmare. I had this happen with a Kohl’s card and they fixed it immediately. Four months later Macy’s is still asking me to submit paperwork I submitted months ago. When they re-issued my new card, they accidentally transferred the fraudulent balance to the new card, then sent me paperwork saying I was delinquent and they notified the credit bureau. When I called they admitted it was a mistake and had to contact the credit bureau on my behalf. It’s been TERRIBLE. I won’t shop there again and I plan to close my card.

  27. Crystal

Not surprised. Macy’s prices are ridiculously expensive. The prices are somewhat better at Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, and Sears. The shipping is not reasonable and it is cheaper to purchase items from other stores. Ordered items online and it was cheaper to drive & pick up than the shipping cost. Plus the online shopping experience is horrid. Macy’s really needs to work on the online business side. Plus the so called coupons basically exclude everything in the store. Hopefully, they will keep some stores open in my area. It is one of the few places that have the undergarments & shoes that I like and the best selection for me.

  28. kym

I use to love macy’s because it was good stuff! now they have a ton of cheap stuff that isn’t good quality, fine if I am shopping at walmart but not macys! If they had good quality and good sales they would prob not be having as many issues! you can’t shop online from a store that you can’t count on them having quality items!

  29. Sann

They accidentally put someone else’s charges on my credit card bc the person didn’t have the their card so they looked it up and were off a name and put it on my card, I was upset and called them and they were very patronizing, I wasn’t mean but wanted them to be more careful. They did not care, did not apologize and sent me a letter afterwards saying thank you for contacting them “with my needs” and they hope they can help me again in the future, but no apology. I honestly thought someone had stolen my info and was worried so I expected them to actually understand that. But no.
