I have the old style with the knob that you turn in the middle. I too read the reviews of the new style and I actually get why they changed it. The knob and the screw are made of cheap material. I went to Lowes and got a new screw and a butterfly to use instead of the knob and screw they supplied. I am sorry to hear about the new style. We just returned from the beach and have used our umbrella at 4 different beaches. I will warn you, some of the beaches in SC have ordinances that will not allow you to fasten the umbrella down using the tethers. You must use the umbrella in an upright position so that the life guard can see. In some places, if a resort/hotel provide their own umbrellas, you will be required to put your umbrella behind the row of resort/hotel umbrellas. We are also using this umbrella in our back yard over our kiddie pool. I also have another umbrella like the new style with the clip thingy in the middle and I have to say it is easier to use.

Considering this but concerned about the negative reviews saying the quality has gone down. Looking to use it at my son’s baseball games but I don’t want it blowing away or breaking after the first use. Anyone buy one recently?
I have the smaller version already, and I bought this big one. I have no complaints – it’s a little cheaply made, but it’s only $40! Don’t expect high tech materials and construction at this price point. That being said it’s lasted us 3+ years of beach trips, 1 to 2 times a month. It’s not designed to sit straight up so it doesn’t do that well – but it can if you need it. Our small one is wearing out – I’m excited to get the biggun!
