As most of you know by now, a huge earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12th… killing hundreds of thousands of people. Desperation is growing in Haiti and we can all help make a huge difference by donating just a few dollars. Think of the impact we can make by coming together and donating!

How can you give back?
Well, first make sure you’re donating to a legit organization. As sad as this is to say, there are lots of scams out there. CNN has put together a great resource here with a list of legit organizations you can donate to. The Red Cross offers an option to donate $10 by sending a simple text message. Just Text ‘Haiti’ to 90999 to donate $10. You can check out more details on this donation here.

Also, let us know what ways you’re helping to make a difference in the comment section. Lets all try and inspire one another!

Thanks for posting this! I was actually going to suggest this in the comments on the NY&Co post…instead of getting 6 purses for $25 I decided just to get 3 for $15 and donate the other $10 via the text message. I can live with a few less purses! It’s really simple to donate, they’ll just add the $10 to your next cell phone bill.

I think it is wonderful you are using your blog to get this message out. In this country we are very fortunate and some times we can forget that. I hope everyone does what they can to help those people who have lost everything. At a minimum, they should be remember in our thoughts and prayers.

Having done mission work in Haiti, and having a hubbie whose family is heavily invlved in missions there, this disaster is weighing very heavily on my heart. Having seen the everyday desolation of Haiti makes this disaster even more devastating. Thank you for drawing attention to it. https://www.just1dollar4haiti.org/ is a special site set up bythe nonprofit my FIL works for, Haiti Cheri (www.haiticheri.org) concerning the earthquake relief. It has some info about Haiti and a link to a page with up-to-date info and correspondence from friends in Haiti (pastors, doctors, etc that the organization has worked with) about the effects of the earthquake on them and the people they serve- it is really terrible. There is also a link where you can make a secure, tax-deductible donation if you feel led. Every little bit helps- most people in Haiti live on less money for 1 day than we can scrounge out of our couch cushions at any given moment. Take a look- if nothing else, it might give you some insight on specific ways to be praying for the people of Haiti. Thanks Collin!

so great of you to do this Collin! We are supporting by going through:

    http://www.friendsoftheorphans.org/quakehelp

This was suggested by some friends of the family who have directly volunteered countless hours helping in Haiti. Any help, no matter what source you go through, or what you give, matters! Our prayers go out to all who are suffering right now.

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sorry to be dense, but how does the text donation work? I don’t see an explanation on the Red Cross link.

    Thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

you are just charged $10 on your next cell phone bill. That $10 is then donated to Red Cross. HTH

  5. Allison

Thanks for posting this … I was actually in the middle of donating to the American Red Cross, when I saw just saw your post! I have saved so much money from your site and I feel blessed to be able to give back to a country that is in need.I hope that many of your readers will do the same! Thank you for all you do 🙂

    • Betsy

That necklace is really cute! I already donated through Red Cross but I may just have to get this necklace too, would make a nice gift for someone.

  6. Kathy

Just wanted to give your readers a website: http://www.hope-for-haiti.blogspot.com. Jenny is holding a raffle of some great prizes and giving all the proceeds to the American Red Cross and Compassion International! You simply click on which item you want to enter for the raffle and for your giving you are entered to win some great prizes, for only $1 contribution! I did this a about an hour ago. You can also just directly donate on her site! I hope this helps others in their giving! Thanks for your concern and compassion!

    • Kathy

I feel a need for a disclaimer, the heart of what I was saying is that no matter how much you can give, you will be entered into the raffle. I reread it after the post and it did not come out how I meant to say it. Sorry! We are praying for all these people and their families!

  7. Kathryn

I just donated. Easiest way to donate for a great cause. My heart goes out to the people in Haiti. 🙁

  8. Jen

Thanks for the post on Haiti. I am the Adoption Coordinator for a not-for profit organization. One of our ministires is orphan care. We have several Homes of Hope in Haiti. Thankfully, none of our families, children or missionaries were harmed. So Haiti has especially been on my mind and heart this week. If anyone would like to know more about ways we are helping in Haiti, please feel free to go to Loving Shepherd Ministires website or blog. The most important thing we can all do is pray for the families and children suffering in Haiti. Thanks for the support and outreach from Collin’s blog too!

I have donated some of my free items from sales like toothpaste, toothbrushes, bandaids, and other supplies toward the health kit project at UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Thousands of Methodist churches in America are sending shipments of these kits to Haiti immediately. Our local shipping container leaves sometime next week to get the aid there as soon as possible. To find out about what is needed for health kits or to donate toward the purchase of a health kit, check out this website:

  10. Jamie

Thank you for posting this. My husband’s cousin and daughter live there and we just got word that they are alive.

    • Kim

I am so glad you heard from them 🙂 What a great feeling.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

thanks! off to send a text!

  12. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh, forgot to mention. I copied the above post in an email & sent it to all my family & friends. The littlest big helps 😉

  13. Kandi

This is another site for organizing/sending health and baby kits: https://www.churchworldservice.org/site/PageServer?pagename=kits_main.

I am donating to Week of Compassion (www.weekofcompassion.org). It’s another faith based organization that donates 100% of your gifts. You can designate your donation or simply make it “where most needed”.

  14. Jessica

    Hi! Love the blog-
I work full time for a nonprofit, and we are organizing an auction to be held and all the proceeds will benefit Haiti relief!

ncgrange.blogspot.com if anyone has something to donate!

  15. Amber L.

My sister was just pulled from the rubble late yesterday. We got the call last night that she is injured, but ALIVE! It was a rough 24 hours as she was in the hotel in PAP. If you cannot donate financially, please pray or offer kind words to those waiting to hear about a loved one. The power of prayer can mean a lot to someone in need of some support. Thank you.

    • SavLucEvMommy

      That’s awesome. Praise God!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am so glad to hear your sister is ok, it’s good to hear stories of people making it through a devastating earthquake and even though I go to church on a weekly basis I’ve always felt as if we all need prayer, but you also need action and I mean financial action. I attend a small church that tries to help as many people as we can ( we had a family of 18 living at the church for about 2 weeks during the hurricane Ike that hit the Houston/ Galveston area) but it always comes down to money if you don’t have any it’s very hard to help others in a time of need! So just keep that in mind.

    • Tami

I’m very happy to hear about your sister! What a relief!

  16. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hi There! I am so glad to see and hear people who are interested in aiding the people Haiti. I work for a Christian organization with minisrty sites in Haiti (children’s homes, schools, etc) and we have also set up a Haiti Relief Fund on our website. This is a legitimate way to help the people of Haiti and your donation will go toward upcoming relief efforts which include, food, shelter, clothing, and the possible rescue of abandoned children. To see more information on the organization and how you can give, please visit http://www.kidsalive.org. Feel free to email me at cambria@kidsalive.org with any questions.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Here’s a little background on Kids Alive Haiti.

Kids Alive International has been rescuing orphaned and abandoned children for over 90 years!

Since 2002, Kids Alive has been giving help and hope to the children of Haiti through our Residential Homes, Schools and community outreach programs. We are extremely grateful that our children, homes, missionaries, and Haitian staff have not been injured or damaged as a result of the earthquake. However, the entire country is in crisis mode. When devastation like this happens in the capital, everything else gets shuts down and basic necessities like food and water become scarce.

Kids Alive has set up a Haiti Disaster Relief Fund and would greatly appreciate any donation you may be willing and able to give. Please visit http://www.kidsalive.org for current updates on the situation in Haiti and also how to help Kids Alive rescue children orphaned by this disaster!

  18. Darci

this is a much better way for me to spend $10 than on the makeup (that i don’t need right now) I was going to buy this week. THANKS!

  19. Peggy

My company is matching donations if you would like to donate. Please check out our site:

    https://www.salesforce.com/

  20. Joanie Demer

Thanks Collin! Appreciate your post and we’ve linked to you as we try to collect the joint efforts of all ‘we bloggers’ to help Haiti!

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Please read the following blog and help these girl’s and their orphanages! They need to get home immediately:
    http://www.thatschurch.com

    • lKay

What an amazing story!! I pray they return safe.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for sharing this story. I will keep these brave girls, those children, and their families in my prayers.

  22. Charity

Samaritan’s Purse (headed by Franklin Graham) is another good place to donate. You can specifiy that you want your donation to go directly to Haiti. I feel so badly for the people who are there.

    http://www.samaritanspurse.org

  23. Caleb

OxFam is an international organization that indicates that they just recently completed their relief effort following the hurricane that attacked Haiti before. As a result, they have a lot of members who are experts at providing what’s needed in Haiti. It may be a great alternative to a religious organization for those that prefer it.

    https://www.oxfamamerica.org/

  24. Melanie

    That was so easy! Thanks!

  25. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Samaritan’s Purse is a great organization! My husband also works for a missions agency AMG International (https://www.amginternational.org) who have national workers already in Haiti. At our church we are going to give to AMG because the pastor they work with in Haiti can get the money where it needs to go — i.e. directly to certain families hurt by the crisis — instead of giving to a general organization where it has the potential of only lining the pockets of corrupt officials. If you know anything about Haiti or have ever been there you know it is a bribe based culture because so much is broken there 🙁 Continue to pray that God will be glorified amidst this tragedy.

  26. Patrice

I donated $50 to Red Cross and $50 to UNICED this morning. I am blessed beyond measure. I sent an email with the donation tracking numbers to you in case you needed it before you’d make a matching donation. God Bless you.

  27. Kelly

Our church supports missionaries in Haiti named Terry & Cary Nelson. We have known them personally for over 20 years. I met them when I was 12 years old on a missions trip to Haiti. They pastor a church in Port-au-Prince. 500 members of their church lost their homes in the earthquake. Thankfully and miraculously they have not heard of any fatalities among those in the church. We are sending support directly to them and we know it is used to help the people. Their website is http://www.lightministriesinc.org if you would like to know more about them. And please pray for them. Thanks so much.

    • Kathy J

      Kelly,
I am glad you mentioned Terry and Cary Nelson of Light Ministries, I too worked with them on a trip to Haiti in the 1980s. They are a wonderful hardworking couple who have accomplished a great deal in Haiti over their long mission there. Glad to know they are okay.

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

    Collin,
I keep hearing that every dollar will help with the efforts in Haiti. My company is taking donations from employees and matching up to $25,000 to send over there. I would like to challenge all of your readers to at least give $5.00 to the effort. I am sure that you have thousands of readers and all of us could make a difference working together.

  29. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Just contributed with the $10 text messaging..what a great idea. Was so happy to help out. I absolutely love your site. Thanx for all the hard work you do for all of us.

  30. Lydia

My birthday is coming up next week and I have forwarded a link to all of my friends with the organizations that are assisting with this effort. In lieu of gifts, I am requesting donations for the Haitian people. I am from a 3rd world country and the images of the devastation break my heart. We donate through the Salvation Army.

  31. suzyqpon

Happy to make a donation – just have to pick the charity to go through – everyone has listed such worthy causes.

  32. lisa

    thanks collin….

  33. Noreen Ali (Nali476)

Just sent my text. Every little bit helps.

  34. Angela

I do a lot of donations and enjoy being able to help. The thing that I value the most is the volunteering that I do, my husband and I both really like to volunteer. Our favorites are volunteering at our Local FoodBank and our local shelters that feed the homeless. These opportunities give us a feeling like nothing else ever has 🙂

  35. Emily

We are donating to Mission Aviation Fellowship. It is a Christian organization that flies small planes and can deliver supplies and people to hard to reach areas. Since we’re hearing that most of the major roads from the airports and ports are blocked, this seems like a very needed service. You can read about them here: https://www.maf.org/news/maf-news/massive-earthquake-hits-haiti

  36. Katie

My husband and I and another couple are youth leaders at our church here in Palm Harbor, Florida. With the help of our youth group we will turn our church hall into a restaurant for one night called “heaven’s kitchen” to raise money (one of our youth leaders is a chef). We are sending it to Go Ministries for their Help Haiti relief fund. Just one more way to help out. This is a great organization and 100% of your donation will go directly to help the victims of the earthquake. you can check it out at the go ministries website.

    https://www.go-ministries.org/

  37. nicole

Hey collin, I also did a post on this same thing. Please feel free to place a link on my site through McLinky that will link back to your post. Maybe I can get a collaborative effort of places and ways to help. thanks for all you do!

    • anon

Nicole can you please provide me with your email address? I was hoping I can send you something with an idea to raise money for haiti. Thanks!

  38. Hannah

    https://haitirescuecenter.wordpress.com/

Real Hope for Haiti Rescue Center is a Christian run facility that provides care for sick/dying children (most of them sick due to malnutrition). They are overwhelmed with helping those hurt by the earthquake. Check out their blog, it’s heartwrenching and sobering. They have a paypal link that you can use to donate directly to them- in Haiti. They are hurting for food and supplies, especially food and formula for the many babies they care for.

  39. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I was at the post office today and they said UPS is shipping any boxes under 50lbs to Haiti for free.

    • laury

The comment about UPS shipping to Haiti for free is an untrue rumor. Read about it here: https://www.nowpublic.com/tech-biz/ups-free-shipping-haiti-rumor-not-true-2556647.html

There was a rumor going around yesterday that UPS was offering free shipping to Haiti in a box that weighed under 50lbs, but it is just that, a rumor and is not true.

UPS is not even shipping to Haiti at this current time, so don’t go to your local UPS dealer and expect to get your package sent for free, it’s not going to happen.

      • laury

UPS is not accepting shipments from individuals or local organizations due to the logistics challenges in Haiti. Service will resume as soon as conditions allow. Shipments to Haiti made prior to the earthquake are temporarily being held at UPS facilities in Miami.

  40. nikki

my husband is actually going to hati soon to help. scary but i feel so bad for them. thanks collin btw i donated ten dollars (: its the least we can do.

  41. Christina

I did some mission work in Haiti with the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission located in St Louis De Nord Haiti – about 150 miles North of Port Au Prince. Their website has updates about what they are doing to help out in Port Au Prince and also accepts donations. http://www.nwhcm.org They are based in Kentucky, so you aren’t sending your credit card information overseas. I just thought I would provide another opportunity/place for people to give. I helped deliver babies by lamp light late at night after the generator went off for the night – I saw this mission do amazing things for those who needed food and education! When I was there they were opening a surgical suite and dental area so that they would be able to better serve the Haitian people!

  42. Heather

You know, I blogged about this last night. I felt odd sitting down talking about all the great deals out there when tens of thousands of people just died in Haiti & countless more needing help. I realize we all have struggles to deal with, but frankly….tough times here aren’t anything in comparison to tough times elsewhere in the world.

My personal favorites for donations right now are Doctors Without Borders & World Vision. Anything will help! Lastly, let’s all count the numerous blessings we have; I know I certainly am.

  43. Angela

I will be donating my husband indefnitely. He is deploying on the USNS Comfort tomorrow at 1 pm and we just found out today at 4 pm. Haiti needs him more than I do, but he is sad to leave our 18 month old and 6 month old behind.
God Bless everyone involved in this situation. It makes us realize how good we actually have it!

  44. Vicki

I was wondering if you were going to mention anything about this Collin, so I am glad that you did..I am going to donate through my church and also, of course, being a christian, pray for them and their nation. Like a friend of mine said the other day; ‘they are not just another people from another country, they are human, like us.’ So in that, I hope we all have and share that same compassion.
*Give and you will receive. You will be given much. Pressed down, shaken together, and running over; it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.* -Luke 6:38

  45. Amy

Thank you for the post Collin! This time of the month is usually tight budget-wise for us but this was a great option since it will be applied to our next cell phone bill. The Red Cross is a wonderful place to put your donation…when our community was in the middle of a disaster in 2008 they were the first people on the scene handing out water when the city water was compromised. They do their jobs well and I have every confidence in donating to them.
The only other way I know how to give back is to pray for the people of Haiti and for their families who are awaiting word from them. In the grand scheme of things the people of Haiti are our next door neighbors and wouldn’t you want to help if your next door neighbor was in desperate need. BTW Amen to Vicki’s post. 🙂
    Thanks again Collin!
