I only print coupons I know I will use or are really high value and I know I can get a great deal

  2. couponlovingmommy

To #6–Pros—I can see everything in my binder. Cons—it’s had to juggle a baby and a binder.

  3. Margie

#4- I can’t always find healthy food coupons, so I use the deals that are money makers to help put towards the money for healthier foods.

  4. Tilla

1)How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid?
i only print coupons for items I will use or will immediately donate; i do not want a stockpile of useless items just for the sake of getting a good deal.
2)How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing?
I have four children, they ate my brain cells, I never ever know what I’m doing.
3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping?
I do not spend anytime, which is a problem. I need help in meal planning, a menu, a grocery list to stick by. I’ve tried it, and tried it, and failed.
4)How can you fit couponing into healthy meal planning?
I fail here as well. I could definitely use some help. We are busy with the 4 children and their 800 zillion activities, wendy’s dollar menu is our friend, and I worry for their health and my fat bottom.
5)What/where can you find the best deals for summer traveling?
I love to do things locally…kids bowl free, water park season passes, zoo season passes. This year we are going to look into the YMCA.
6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?
they are all cons, i have them in giant zip loc bags spread all over the bedroom, and car. In all other aspects of life i am very organized to the point of OCD but coupon organizing is my nemisis.
7)How do you get the maximum use of coupons before the expiration date?
I just double check things if I know they are on sale and I think I have a coupon. I have let some good ones expire.
8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?
i am very lucky to live within 5 minutes of all the major places I need to go. If I need walgreens I can go 3 different ways to get to one in just a few blocks.

1)How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid?

    I print the food ones

I usually spend about 30 minutes – 1 hour getting my coupons organized each week. Before my shopping, I usually spend about 15 minutes per store mapping out the deals. It is definitely worth the time!!

  7. Rachel

On the one hand ytou feel like you know what your doing right away on the other it may take YEARS to acutally know.

  8. Trisha M.

The pros of doing the baseball card filing is that I can see all the coupons in the different categories, there fore it’s easy to find a last minute coupon.
Cons it takes longer to cut out and file every coupon.

  9. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method? I sort my coupons by self made categories on index dividers in a photo box. I like that I have all of my coupons with me so that I can use them on clearance items and surprises at the store but sometimes it is a hassle to lug around a big box and have to cut out and sort all coupons when i get them.

  10. Shannon

    1. When I first started couponing, I printed ALL the coupons and ended up throwing away 90% of them. This takes a LOT more time than just clipping those you need. Now I clip the ones I know I will use and the ones I think I will use, especially if it’s for a free or super cheap item. After a few months, you get a feel for which P&G coupons you clip every month and never end up using. They will be out again next month, so just save your P&G (or other coupon publication) somewhere so you can clip if you need it. Otherwise it’s a lot easier to discard at the end of the month when they expire.

    3. I used to invest 5-10 hours per week on couponing, usually more toward the 10 end. This time was spent clipping coupons from the Sunday paper, filing them into my binder, reading this blog, scouring internet coupon sites, and searching for specific coupons when all else failed. I would not go to the store without one last look at the internet, which involves booting up the computer since we don’t leave it on. My husband commented how all I do in my spare time is coupon (we don’t have any kids) and at that point I realized he was right and I needed to focus better. I quit saving coupons for stores I don’t visit often because I will not end up using them, no matter how great the deal is. Each week I print my Publix list from the website, focusing mainly BOGOs. Since I have a good stockpile, my shopping trips lately have been much faster and I’ve only spent about 2-3 hours weekly for the last month or two. If I don’t have corresponding coupons to match the BOGOs (or if I deem the match up coupon not worthy enough), I will simply cross the item off the list before I get to the store.

  11. Jessica Homan

I decide which coupons to print by thinking if its something my family already uses and likes, or if its something new I have been wanting to try. If its something I don’t think we will use or something I have no interest in, I don’t waste the paper or ink.

  12. mary

I am still learning a few things on couponing after 1 1/2 yrs., but feel like I’ve pretty much gotten the sytems down from each store I go to!

  13. Lynn N.

    5. Definitely Target and Wal-mart. I can often get travel size items for free at those 2 stores.

  14. Pamela

2)How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing? When I started to seriosly start to use coupons it took a couple months…

3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping?
3-4 Hours but my time is splitt up here and there throughout the week. It is not a one time of 3-4 hours

8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?

I usually talk myself into going b/c I NEED to get that Good deal. I have started to really figure out if it is worth it since it is a 12 mile trip one way. I have to remind myself that there WILLl be another deal!

  15. Tracy

1)How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid? I base it on things I use and things I would use if it was really cheap. Lately I’ve started on stuff I’ve seen for free in the past so I can pay forward.

2)How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing? I still don’t know what I’m doing all of the time and it’s been a year. I really rely on this and other websites. I don’t think my brain works that way so this is a huge service to me.

3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping? Clipping and organizing the coupons take the longest, then it’s about 15 minutes before I head to the store(s).

4)How can you fit couponing into healthy meal planning? To me, getting my personal health and cleaning products for really cheap frees up money so I can buy more fresh vegitables. Also, knowing which stores have the best prices and produce sections really helps…I love Winco for this.

5)What/where can you find the best deals for summer traveling? Dealnews.com give a lot of hotel/airline and activity deals.

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method? extra time to clip and organize the coupons into baseball card holders, but I can see what I have very quickly and grab deals I may have missed with my “clip what I need” method.

7)How do you get the maximum use of coupons before the expiration date? You won’t get every deal, but watching weekly sales and glacing at your binder every now and then will help you get to know what you have and what may be expiring.

8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?
I am lucky because I have all of the major stores close by between home and work. On the weekends I hit the stores close to home, during the week I hit the stores on the way home from work.

  16. Robyn

1)How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid?
I print the items my family uses. If it is a really high value coupon, I clip it and hope for a sale where I can get the item for free (I’ve noticed this happens on new product items, a lot). There are sooo many coupons out there…you just have to limit yourself or you get too overwhelmed!

2)How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing?
It took me a couple months.

3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping?
About 2-4 hours – all week long. Never in one stint.

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?
Because I don’t print or clip every coupon…my organization works for me. I have a 3-ring binder with plastic tabs and use baseball card holders.

8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?
If my family really uses the items – or – it is such a fantastic deal I would be foulish to not do it.

  17. Megan

1)How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid? i go for high values and commonly used products. also new products tend to offer high values!

2)How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing? about a month. you have been clipping an organizing and prolly made at least 4 trips to the store if not more! by this point you already have a fave checker!

3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping? prolly about 30 minutes. i make a general list and go through my binder siting list items and coups about to expire. once thats done i make a new list with the exact products!

4)How can you fit couponing into healthy meal planning? start by adding frozen veggies to every dinner! there are plenty of coups available

5)What/where can you find the best deals for summer traveling? sign up for hotel chains and airlines website to get online offers

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method? i am a binder person so the clipping and organizing are time consuming but i can find coups at the store for discounted or unadvertised deals instantly! plus they are all laid out pretty!

7)How do you get the maximum use of coupons before the expiration date? shopping the weekly ads and bulk buying

8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores? if its rolling deals with high purchase limits then its worth the extra trip or just take the hubs along1

  18. Annmarie

    1) How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid?
If I use the product and I know I will need to stock up I print the coupon. Otherwise I wait to print until I need the coupon.
    2) How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing?
It took me about 6 months to feel like I had a good handle on couponing. After a year I started seeing the savings I was hoping for and reading about others getting. I started out small and did not worry about the big savings at first. I was just happy to be improving my couponing skills and savings. I would say start out with stocking up on the health, beauty aids and cleaning supplies as I think they have better deals and savings. Plus those things don’t expire as fast as food items might. Instant gratification!
3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping?
Two hours when I started to tackle CVS, Rite Aid, Target and Meijer. Now it takes me a half hour to an hour.
    4) How can you fit couponing into healthy meal planning?
I still cook the healthy foods my family was eating before but it took me a while to stock pile. There are times though that we really want a favorite meal that I can’t find many coupons for and then we splurge. It is still better to splurge with a meal at home than going out to dinner – it still saves you money. We do also splurge once in a while and eat out!
    5) What/where can you find the best deals for summer traveling?
Sorry – can’t help with this one. Unfortunately my DH got laid off from work we don’t vacation much. We do take an annual trip to Myrtle Beach in October. After the first weekend in October the rates are reduced for many things especially lodging. We shop the air fare online and wait to get a great deal. My family of 4 can go to Myrtle Beach (from Michigan) for 4 nights, a rental car and air fare for about $1000. We eat breakfast and lunch in the room or at the pool/beach so all we do is have the expense of eating out each night. I create a shopping list at home before we go and of course bring coupons with us. We go on resturant.com and check for the restaurants that are offered and most of the time get great deals on eating out. The temps are still in the 70 – 80 range and the beach is still beautiful. (I am sure you already know this Collin!) It is a great cheap vacation that we enjoy each year.
    6) What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?
I use a card filing box system with dividers for different categories. I don’t think it is that great of a system but I am nervous to spend all the money for a coupon binder since I am not sure how those are organized. I am not sure I want to lug around the big binder. The small card file box seems easy to take along. I sort out and organize most of the coupons at home that I will be using on a particular shopping trip so there is not much sorting through coupons in the store. I would like to learn more about the binder system and how to use that. Pictures would also be helpful.
I do keep stacks of the RP, P&G, and SS with the date on the first page. I also do a quick flip through and find the coupon that has the oldest expiration date and write that on the front. That way I will know when the insert expires so that I can donate the coupons to the military.
    7) How do you get the maximum use of coupons before the expiration date?
I usually use a coupon with the sale but if it is a product that I really like I have a separate area that I keep those coupons buy expiration date so that I make sure to determine if I want to use the coupon (maybe without a sale) before it expires.
    8) How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?
At first I was addicted to getting every deal there was but it was taking a lot of my time. I work outside the home so I was finding that I was running an errand or two each night after work. After a while the novelty wore off and now I don’t really make special trips. I hit CVS, Rite Aid, Target and Meijers usually on the weekend and then maybe one time during the week after you post additional deals. If I get the deal then great and if I don’t then maybe better luck next time. I have quite a stock pile so I am not desperate for a deal. I am trying to be less obsessed about it and spend more time with my family. I still get quite a few good deals though!

  19. Jamie

8)How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?

Answer: I go ahead and call the store to make sure.

  20. Martina

I try to only print out coupons that I think that I will use, but sometimes my ambition is more than the reality. Couponing is very time consuming – I try to fit in time whenever I can, which often includes cutting and organizing coupons while I am on lunch break, traveling in the car (when my husband is driving), or when I am watching one of my “shows.” Even though couponing takes a lot of time – it is a lot of fun and I love the thought of saving my family money to use on other things, like vacations:)

  21. katie k

    1. I only print out the coupons that I know I am going to use immediately. I plan my trip first, then print.

    7. I wait for a great deal to buy. If that means some of my coupons expire, then they do and I save the money I would have spent. Usually there will be another of those coupons again- its is pretty rare when a coupon only comes around once.

    8. I make sure that there are multiple deals that are “great” deals as opposed to just good deals.

  22. Amanda

I look through my coupons almost daily to remind myself of what is there….I get more deals that way and it just takes a few minutes!

  23. Laura Acton

I am actually pretty new to couponing, but I personally only print coupons that I’m pretty sure I will use (brands that I already use or REALLY great deals). Otherwise, I use the ones that come in the paper..

  24. Jessica Noll

i clip coupons that I think I might use – based on the price in each store i visit. i don’t make every trip a coupon trip but hope to get good enough at it that i can make couponing a priority. i find that i have a HUGE stockpile right now on dressings and need to back off when i find them on sale, just because it’s a good deal!

  25. Megan R

I go through the weekly sale ads and circle the things that are a good price…esp. meats and produce. Then I plan my dinner menu for the next week and try to keep in mind the things I already have on hand and the things that are in the circulars. I make my grocery list based on my weekly menu and the good deals that I have circled in the sale ads…I try not to go to every single store unless it’s way cheaper than just price matching at Wal-mart(i.e. double/triple coupons and mega sales at stores like Kroger). Next to the item on my list I write which store I’m price matching, the price, and any coupons that I have for that item. I look at hip2save for the deal scenerios at the drug stores and usually run in a couple of those (I religiously go to CVS every week to roll my extra care bucks–free toiletries!!) on my way to Walmart or target. 🙂

  26. Tricia

I actually sat down a couple of weeks ago to calcualte how much time I spent couponing for a post on MomsLikeMe. It came out to about 20-25 hours a month, not counting actual shopping time – which is actually the least of it. For that, I calculated my “coupon salary” to be around $25 an hour. Definitely worth it!

  27. Mary

I print the coupons that are for products that we like and use frequently or ones that I would like to try if I could get them inexpensively with coupons.

  28. Dawn

#1 if I can’t get it on sale then I will not clip the coupons and I say to my self do I really need this and will i use it or will someone else

  29. Darla

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?

I use a binder with transparent pages. Each page has 4 4″x6″ slots. The cons of doing it this way is I had invest a lot of time getting the binder created and setup where I could label and find the coupon I needed. The pros of doing this are simple… coupon inserts vary by region and I missed some great deals when I first started couponing by thinking I had a lesser value coupon. Now when an item is on sale, I simply look in the binder to see what coupons I have available for that product. Plus, I take my binder into stores with me and if I see something on clearance, I can instantly put my hands on the needed coupon and get a bargain. This is always a nice surprise.

  30. Sharon B

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?
I bought a binder (I had to, because binder is my last name!!) and I put the plastic baseball card pages in it. I also bought a package of pages with the colored index tabs. I made up my own system. In the zippered compartment, I put my CVS bucks and rainchecks. In the other zipper compartment, I put a pair of small scissors and a couple pens. In the dividers in the binder, I put the store ads and sometimes I put in my store receipts. I always keep my shopping list with my coupons attached in one of the dividers.

The first thing I put in the 3-rings is about 25 pieces of notebook paper. Then I write on the first index: RESTAURANTS. There aren’t that many restaurant coupons, but there are enough that I wanted to have that category. Next section is MISCELLANEOUS. In this section I put coupons in here that I think don’t fall into a regular category, such as: cameras, eyeglasses, etc etc. It’s just an optional category that I put random coupons in.
Next I write HEALTH on the index tab. Then on each page, at the top, I write a different category and also alphabetize it. The first page would be COSMETICS. Second page: DEODERANT. Next page: FACE WASH and LOTION. Next page: HAIR. Then MOUTHWASH, then TOOTHEBRUSH, then TOOTHEPASTE, And last is VITAMINS. I also write on some of the places where the coupons go. For instance, on the page that is for COSMETICS, I’ll write: LOREAL, COVERGIRL, MAYBELLINE, etc etc. Same thing for all the other pages. That way I can flip to the section (tab) and then look alphabetically for the page I need, then glance for the specific item. My other categories that I have tabs for are: HOUSEHOLD (I also write at the top of each page: DISHES, KLEENEX, CLEANING, SMELLIES, PAPER TOWELS, TOILET PAPER, etc etc. Other categories: DAIRY, FROZEN, CANS, SAUCES, SNACKS, and just any other category I can think of that would be appropriate.

It did take awhile to organize my binder, but it has been so worth it! At least for me, I just bring along my binder when I go into a store and if I see something I think is a great price, I flip through my binder to see if I might have a coupon to go with it. That takes about 2 seconds and that makes the time I spent putting it all together so worth it!

I get my coupons from the internet as well as ALL YOU magazine and the Sunday paper. I also trade with someone. I only cut out the coupons I think I will use and put the others in a bag to trade. I do look at at couple coupon sites and I have bought cat litter coupons from Ebay. I probably spend about 4 hours a week on coupons, but my savings are incredible!
I have just discovered CVS’ing, all because of buying a bag of caramels for $1.50 and getting back a $2.00 ECB! From that moment I was HOOKED!

For now, I have enough toothepaste & toothebrushes, deoderants, body washes, and shampoos that would last for the rest of this year. I have given my (grown) children a ton of free things and they love it! For now, I’m just concentrating on groceries…..even from CVS!

My coupon organization method works great for me! I’ve just been doing this for about 6 months, but I LOVE IT!! There may be better ways, but for now, I’m sticking with the binder (Mr. Binder too….35 years!)

  31. ROSE

6)What are the pros/cons of your coupon organization method?

I just switched over to a binder. I have to say it is a love/hate realtionship now. I love being able to see all my coupons and find them so quickly, BUT the thing is HUGE! It no longer fits into my bag like my accordian folder did. I feel kind of silly walking in with this HUGE binder (it’s a Case) and my child’s diaper bag. I don’t like how it hangs over the edges of the shopping cart as I shop. I’m afraid I’m going to take someone/something OUT!I don’t like how the pages slip out of the rings sometimes. It also takes longer to add them to my pages instead of just slipping them into my file folder. Overall, I am enjoying the binder more, but I’m still getting used to the drawbacks.

#5- If you are able to plan vacations without having to schedule a lot of time in advance, many hotels, resorts, cabin rentals, etc will have last minute specials. If you can use the same accomodations on return trips, some also will offer customer loyalty discounts. While traveling on the interstates, stopping at the rest areas also offers the opportunity to pick up brochures. Many time you can find valuable coupons for accomodations, restaurants, shows, and attractions. Prior to your trip, check the intenet for coupons offered for the area you plan to visit also.

    Question #2 – My Answer
I’ve only been couponing for just over a year now. Lots of people say I’m an “expert”, but I beg to differ. I think that there is ALWAYS something else to learn, stores change their policies, new programs are made available…. etc. Things that you wouldn’t know unless you get out there and use coupons. If you are a frequent shopper, you are more familiar. Get to know different bloggers and don’t let new types of deals or programs scare you… learn them and you’ll be better for it. It’s easy to say “that looks complicated” and walk away from learning something new, but… a LOT of people say that about “couponing” (in general) and I think all if not most of us would agree that it is worth the time and it gets less complicated as you go.
So, my advice… don’t worry about learning it by some made-up deadline. Take it one trip at a time. Before you know it… you’re teaching it to someone else!
    Really hope this helps someone!

  34. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Q#1: I decide on which coupons to clip in a variety of ways… I always clip if it’s a brand I use. I clip and use if I can get something for free or for dirt cheap (I’ll find a use for it even if its not a regular brand). I don’t tend to clip coupons that you have to buy more than one item to use it unless it’s a really high value coupon.

  35. Smellyann

#7 – I use the Deal Seeking Mom Coupon Database, and I go into my personal database regularly (at least 3-4 times a month) and sort by expiration date. That way I know what’s expired and what’s ABOUT to expire. I look those over carefully and see if there are any I really want to use. That way I rarely miss a really good one!

  36. Nina Suggs

    Q. #1. How do you decide which coupons to print out and which ones to avoid?
    A. If the coupon is for something I have never purchased and will never use, I do not clip it. There is no reason to make a purchase of a product that will end up in the back of a closet gathering dust for who knows how long.
    Q. #2How long does it REALLY take to get to a point where you feel like you know what you are doing?
    A. I have been couponing for about 7 months. Because of Collin, and her daily emails, it didn’t take but about 2 months to get my mind wrapped around the concept. When I’ve had a question, she has ALWAYS answered it for me. Thanks Collin, your the best.
    Q. #4 How can you fit couponing into healthy meal planning?
    A. There are several ways to do this. Look for great deals in the produce section of your market. Sometimes you can find a coupon for produce. Using fresh vegetables and fruits is the best way to achieve a healthy diet. Also, using coupons for items such as rice, dry beans and pasta. These items can be had for little to nothing with sales and coupons. I do not use boxed meals for my family, (I prefer home cooked meals) but if I can get a boxed meal for a few cents, I will use key components such as the pasta or vegetables for example but will make my own sauces or seasons and add fresh veggies and meat to the dish and make it my own.
    Q. #8 How do you determine if it’s worth the extra trips (gas money, time) to special stores?
    A. For me, if the store is a distance of 20 miles or more away, they have to be having some extra extraordinary great deals to make it worth the trip. I will not go if there is only a couple items that I can use. I really like to shop at Publix because of the BOGO deals. However, it is a 50 minute trip for me so I only plan a trip when there are a lot of good sales to go with my coupons. Then when I have a total of say $190.00 and I only pay half of that, I smile like the cat who ate the Canary, all the way home. Yippeeeeeeee!!!

. I print out any for products we usually use, plus ones I might be able to use for rebates, CVS special money maker sales etc. I try to keep coupons for those sales/specials separate from the rest in its own small coupon organizer. During the weekend I check the sales and best deals on Hip 2 Save, then organize by store, with matching coupons. Combining coupons with selective shopping at stores like Aldi’s has saved me about 50% of my grocery budget.

Off topic, but this is so weird. Yesterday I carefully watched the comments, trying to time mine for a lucky number. When it was at 911 comments, I submitted mine. As soon as it went through, it said 915 comments, so I thought I timed it just right, but today when I go back to see which number I am, it says I’m 905. How did that happen? So strange. Oh well, love this site & I’m enjoying reading everyone’s tips!

You know, I was #390 when I submitted my comment the other day, and I have been waiting for an email from Collin.. when you said that, I went to check and mine is now #391?? Thats kinda disappointing if I didn’t win- I was really excited. Wonder how the comment numbers got moved around. :/

I’m with you…I was 995, someone even said congrats, but now I’m 997. ha bummer.

Ok I don’t understand either. When I made my comment I was #80 it showed up that way. Showed that way for several days. Now I have heard nothing and I went back to check and moved down to #81. How does that happen?? Has anyone gotten any responses from Collin? Is it worth emailing her to find out?

3)How much time do you seriously invest in the process of organizing your grocery list, coupons, stores sales, etc. before you head out the door to go shopping?

3 hours. 1 hour on Sunday putting the list together. 1 hour on Monday printing coupons. 1 hour on Tuesday cutting coupons. Shopping is on Wednesday.

#6 Pros and Cons – I love saving money, but it does take time to print and cut out coupons and organize my shopping lists.
