You In Bloom ~ The Power of Words

Words are powerful.

As a blogger, I’ve learned first hand the power of words. I am very aware that the words I choose when writing a post will ultimately form an impression, create a reaction, and/or develop an emotion from you, my reader. I bring this up because it is essential to me that Hip2Save be a place that you feel welcome, informed and comfortable. While the freedom to express your views and opinions is important, it is just as important, that the Hip2Save environment remain a positive and supportive one.

The comments section of my posts, at times, can get a little heated. Although, there is always room for debate, we need to be sure the the words that are chosen during these debates be helpful rather than hurtful. I now have an extra set of eyes helping to monitor this area of the blog in hopes of minimizing the overly negative (or just plain mean) comments that sometimes are made. I’m asking you to help in this effort by keeping an upbeat attitude that is encouraging rather than discouraging. To me, as a whole, Hip2Save has become an amazing community of really special, uplifting people and I thank you for that. In the spirit of this You In Bloom topic, “The Power of Words”, I have included one of my favorite inspirational quotes.

I would like to dedicate today’s comments section to favorite quotes, poems, and riddles that are POSITIVE and encouraging. Thanks in advance for sharing your words and spreading good vibes! Hip Hip Hooray! 😀

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Well as my mother always said “If you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all”

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Amen to that; You can choose to tear someone down or you can choose to LIFT someone up and bless yourself in the long run:) 🙂

Thank you for the “You in bloom” post…beautifully stated. Hope you don’t mind me borrowing the George Elliot quote for my FB page. Thank you Collin for all you do. You really do ROCK!!

Money may be the husk of many things but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; acquaintance, but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; days of joy, but not peace or happiness. ~Henrik Ibsen

      I love this!!!

      • Amanda

Love this one too! Can’t believe I haven’t come across that quote yet, thanks!!

We have a saying in my native language that translates to something like this –
“Even the deepest burns caused by fire may heal, but the burns caused by words will never heal”.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent -Eleanor Roosevelt

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      That’s my favorite.

      • Susan

        One of my favorites also.

    • Barbie

Love this one too, but it kind of defies the intent of this post. Roosevelt is saying we are immune to words if we choose to be.

      • Pam

I see it differently. Collin is speaking in regards to the comments on her blog, which usually involves differences in opinions, not really one person trying to make another feel inferior. Eleanor Roosevelt is referring more to one’s social and educational status. But this just shows how we each see things differently. 🙂

        • Barbie

Sorry to disagree but in the opening post, Collin unequivocally states that some comments are downright mean.

          • Pam

It’s okay to disagree, but that’s not what Eleanor Roosevelt meant by her comment. It’s one thing to be mean, but that is not the same as making one feel inferior to another.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Written word is very different from spoken word. With spoken word you have voice pitch and body language to help you interpret the speakers meaning; written word you can only interpret meaning by what you have read. Choose your typed word carefully.

After my grandmother passed away I read through some of the journals she kept during her battle with cancer – this quote made an appearance many times and has stuck with me ever since.

    • Jenn

I just wanted to cry reading that beautiful quote. We just lost a dear friend to cancer, but I think this is what she would be saying today if she were here.

“It’s not the number of breaths we take, it is the number of moments that take our breath away.”

    • Sam

Love that one. Of course there are so many that it would be hard to chose a fav. But I love the thought of making memories especially with my kids who are now 9 & 11. I spent much of their childhood worrying about getting the house clean. Then one day it donned on me – I want the kids to remember my as their mom, not a that crazy lady that kept the house clean. And even at that – will they remember the clean house, clean clothes, food on the table – no, I think in the end they will remember how we acted towards each other.

      • Barbie

I feel like cleanliness has its place and that kids do notice.

Like anything else, cleanliness can be taken to an extreme.

But I know kids who live in less than ideal conditions and they are always so impressed by a clean home, almost like the cleanliness makes it a palace.

I’ve even read that children of highly organized parents do much better in school.

I’m middle-of-the-road clean, but I want my kids to leave my house realizing they can’t be the slob when they move in the dorm or share an apartment and about the only way I know to instill this idea is to be the example.

      • Anoymous

Sam, you have found “gold” and thank goodness you found it while your kids are still young.
Clean houses are nice, but the time you spend with your kids will NEVER be forgotten by them. Kudos to the mom who can do both today in our busy lives, but if you have to choose between a clean house or time with the kids, choose the kids first, they do remember which you chose. I am old enough now to have heard kids speak of both ways and the happiest kids are the ones whose parents had time for them. They don’t care if the house was in perfect order (we’re not talking about filth), just ask a child what he would like.

We’ve all grown up listening to the phrase “Stick n Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” I’ve always had a hard time with that phrase because words are SO powerful and they DO hurt at times. Collin, you’ve been an inspiration and a wonderful part of so many lives!! Thank you for all you do!!! You are loved by many!!

One of the reasons I read your blog is the overwhelming tone of positivity in your posts and the responses of other readers. I get a lot of great info and the “mood” is upbeat and fun. There are a lot of other coupon sites & blogs out there and yours is my favorite because of these things. Nice matters. Thanks, Collin!

For those who are sensitive and get their feelings hurt easily from the postings people make here:

Stay strong positive ladies! Don’t let the negative ones get you down. 🙂

    • Barbie

So True. I know there are some negative comments here sometimes, but I have seen instances in life and online where people are only being truthful, etc and someone gets hurt feelings.

I completely agree. I follow about 5 different blogs and I am always impressed how hip2save and moneysavingmom are always so upbeat and positive. One particular blogger does a great job, but gets upset when someone posts a negative post.

“Always be yourself because the people that matter don’t mind, and the ones that mind don’t matter.” Not sure you said this, but it’s always been a favorite of mine.

A couple of years ago I went through a really bad time. I suffered a heart attack at age 51, then 2 months later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer. (my heart attack led to the discovery of my cancer, thus “saving” my life) I then had a major surgery, followed by a second emergency surgery do to a life threatening complication. These events were followed up with breast biopsies and a breast cancer scare. Through all of this my faith remained strong. My sister made a beautiful wall plaque with these words:

Life isn’t about waiting for the storms to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

I love the quote, but we do not know who to attribute it to. Storms will come, but we have to learn how to walk through them.

And, if you are wondering, I am fine. Heart is strong, and I am considered surgically cured from my cancer.

    • fran

Gosh Anita, you sure have been through a lot. I’m glad that you are well. I know your faith got you through all of that…stay strong and healthy 🙂 I just want you to know, your comment brought tears to my eyes…I’m glad you are okay.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Congratulations! I bet you could teach us how precious life is and to make the most of every day–because it might be your last. Live positively!

    • Jenna

My mother and I love the song “I Hope You Dance”, This quote reminds me of it and I have never heard it before. Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you are ok!!!!

“Today, smile at every living creature you meet!” I love this quote because it’s amazing the way you can change someone’s day just by smiling at them. Give it a try!

  43. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

that picture is a little creepy…just saying.

    • Laury Kossoff

Oh, I was thinking how nice that picture was. I always have a running negative conversation going on in my head and the first thing I thought of was when I saw the picture was that I should say nice things to myself.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

        I love the picture!

        • Lisa

I like the pic too. It really speaks to me…how words can encourage and wrap one in comfort and strength.

    • Anonymous

Isn’t it neat how we can all look at something and see it differently.

  44. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I love the quote, “Life is like a box of grapenuts, you open the box…no grapes, no nuts.” This may sound depressing, but I like to think that you get something unexpected out of life, but maybe something better than you planned! And its funny too. Love the picture!

    • Teresa B.

      LOL…LOL!

Yours reminds me of this one: It takes more muscle to frown, than it does to smile.
I love to laugh…I have a sense of humor like no other (this isn’t a quote, it from me) 🙂

      • Ayesha
