I have some exciting news for all you Walgreens shoppers….

Check out this email I received from reader, Nikki:

I just had a conversation with the Walgreens Corporate office and was told that effective August 26th 2010, they will be implementing a National coupon policy that will be posted on their website. I look at this as good news! We will finally have an actual policy instead of just guidelines that the store manager can interpret at their own discretion. Not sure if you were already aware of this, but I know that I will be looking forward to seeing the policy listed on Walgreens website come August 26th!

What do you all think?! Have you heard about this possible corporate coupon policy? More details to come…

yahoo! I can’t wait until they come out with this! No more run around! Now we can whoop out their coupon policy on a paper

  2. Ashley

    Very excited about this.

  3. donna

I’m interested in seeing this as I have re-vowed never to set foot in Walgreens after last week when they told me it was corporate policy not to take a manufacturer’s coupon and one from their coupon book when I was buying cough medicine for my son. I never experience that at CVS. As my husband says CVS is Coupon Friendly.

    • Rhonda

I’m with you Donna….they act like we are theiving creatures lurking in the store. My gosh everybody gets paid and we get product. THAT they would never sell at their rediculous prices anyway!

    • Mandy

Me, too! I have only stepped foot into a Wags 2 times in a year for the exact same reason. They act like we’re stealing from the store! I will gladly give CVS my business! They happily accept ALL of my business… coupon or otherwise!

    • michelle

I love my Walgreens! The cosmetics girl is wonderful. She gives me coupons and takes any of my coupons. Sorry others have a bad experience with them.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

        I totally agree with you.

      • lindsay

I agree with you michelle! The trick to Walgreens is the cosmetic counter! This coupon policy actually makes me nervous because my coupons are NEVER rejected…. she takes anything for me! I hope they don’t change too much!

      • Dominique

My Walgreens is great too. The manager always asks me when the Super Doubles and Triples are going on at Harris Teeter. His sister is a big couponer too, so if I tell him a deal-he runs and calls his sister!

      • mb

I always give my shoppers coupons when I can, we keep a stash in cos, and even clip newspapers sometimes to save people more money. It depend on the store you work at, I know that in my store we will actually tell you if we have an extra coupon. Thats why I like working there, we try to be as nice and friendly to everyone as possible

    • Judy

I have to say none of my CVS stores are coupon friendly. After my phone call they got about one store they are getting a letter about the second one. They are terrible. I say this not as a Rite Aid store manager but, as a consumer. I have never been treated with such disregard. I am apalled and would never do what they did to me to anyone. I am super excited though about the Walgreens policy finally coming out. I have a Walgreens nearby and am afraid to really try any real couponing with them without a policy I can use.

  4. Linda

All I can say is Wahoo…….it’s about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Elizabeth

WOW!!! I’m so excited about this news!!!!!!

  6. Rhonda

YEA!!! Let the battle begin!!! J/K….But I would love for once and for all KNOW what their policy is and even more for their employees “know.”

  7. brittney

It would be great if Target wasn’t too far behind them in this. I’ve never had a problem until the other day. I tried using the $2 off on a skirt the other day and it beeped and the lady wouldn’t give it to me. So i asked her why, “Oh i’m not sure, probably because it’s on clearance”. Um I think not!!!! Can we say lazy?!?! I was so mad!!!

    • jennifer

yes today i went to target it seriously took 20 min because the lady sat there and checked every item with every coupon like i was trying to steal the stuff i mean really. she ended up giving all the coupons to me but everyone was snickering behind me and it was so embarrising i like target but its crazy what we have to go through.

      • Lori

Seriously… People snickered at you? How much were they snickering when all your coupons went through and you walked out of there with deals that they could never imagine getting?! I say let them snicker. We’re saving money, and learning how to do it with integrity and within the guidelines of the system. I actually had a lady today at RiteAid ask me if I was going to be much longer. I looked at her and said, “I’m only going to be here as long as it takes to finish this transaction”. I should have included… “FOR FREE STUFF, YEAH!” And… if she’d not been so snide to me, I might have tried to pull out an extra coupon for her. Next time, see if you can get in line with the tattooed, teen age boy. They’re GREAT! 🙂 Sorry you had the hassle.

      • michele

Were you in Arnold? If so, I know the cashier. I go to south county now because she is SOOO Hateful to me every time I use coupons 🙁

    • Jessica K

I always carry Target’s policy with me!!

    • heidi

I bought some shorts yesterday that were on clearance for $2.50 and the cashier said she didn’t think I could use the $2 off coupon since they were already so cheap so she called the manager over and the manager approved. The cashier was really nice about it me using more than one of the same coupons as well….I was going to do three separate transactions for the $1/1 produce items since the last Target i went to the cashier wouldn’t take them but this lady scanned them and they went through just fine(which they would have scanned at the last one as well but she wouldn’t accept them). I could understand if Target limited it to 2 like coupons in the same transaction since you can only print two(normally) per computer but just one is ridiculous IMO.

    • CA

I’m right there with you – I picked up a package of Mini Altoids next to the register at Target the other day. They were marked 38 cents (on sale) and I figured I would give them a try. They rang up as 99 cents. I said something and the checker said “I’ll have someone look into that” and proceeded to ring in my items without changing the price. I said I didn’t want the mints if she wasn’t going to honor the price (that was literally right in front of her face is what I wanted to say, but didn’t). She deleted the mints and I left w/o them. Overall, they are just a package of mints – but seriously, you would think they would honor the prices they list and that she would be more customer friendly than that.

    • Nichole B

I too wish Target would develop a clear and precise coupon policy. I have not been in Target since July 25th when I was trying to do the free Sobe deal. (All I ran into was problems when a cashier and a manager would not let me use the man q and the target q to get 2 for free.) It’s a huge loss to them because I would be in the store once, if not twice a week. Target, IMO, is ranking right up there with Walmart (which I haven’t stepped into since last March).

  8. susan

This is great! Does cvs have a uniform policy regarding coupons? I don’t think they do…. I went into a cvs that I usually don’t go to last week and I tried to get some sobes with my bogo coupon during their bogo sale and i was told I could only use ONE of my bogo coupons! I was so mad as I’ve never encountered this. The woman said it was the manager’s decision. Grr.

    • Alea

CVS does have a policy – the Sobe sale was limited to 6 bottles, so you were allowed to use three coupons.

      • DP

The mananger @ my CVS let me use ALL my coupons – 60 bottles worth!

        • Jessica K

Some of them won’t let you use any. We now have a CVS that won’t take internet printables at all. Corporate customer service told me that it’s up to the manager.

          • Michelle

FYI, If SOBE goes on BOGO again before the printables expire, call Pepsi directly. Apparently some rather smart people here did just that & the corporate or district office (I’m not sure which) got an earful from Pepsi about denying the sales & then the stores got an earful from district. Hehe! I wish I would have thought of that!!!!!!

        • heidi

60? The most I have bought at once was 12 and that was only because they had about 50 in stock. I had enough coupons to get all 50 but no way would I feel good getting that many at once.

          • Aleshia

Why would you feel bad? That store is still getting their money back….I know it doesn’t leave room for other customers, but like every good thing first come first serve. Besides….the manager at any store location has the right to limit the amount of items being sold to one person. So, the manager had the right to say no I will only allow 6….If the manager was okay with it then she did nothing wrong.

          • heidi

Aleshia I know the store gets there money back. That is not why I said I would feel bad. I am not selfish and therefore would think to leave some for other people. Buying 60 Sobe’s is just plain ridiculous. Yeah,I know its first come first serve but that doesn’t mean you should get that many at once.

          • heidi

            *their

          • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I think buying 12 sobe drinks is considered greedy, save some for other people. How would you feel if someone did that to you.For a person to have 50 coupons on sobe drinks should be ashame of themself, some people have to work and cant get to the store right away.Well what comes around goes around and maybe you will not be able to use all of your so called 50 coupons.Thats what some of the stores get mad at is for people like you who buy up everything and have to hear crap from customers about the shelves being empty when the sale just started.

          • oconnorsavings

To Jack … ummm.. for some of us, 12 wouldn’t even get 1 per person in the family….. So try to not judge TTTOOO much on what is excessive! What is excessive for one person/family is not even a beginning for another.
            to all in general…
I absolutely agree with it being excessive when you shelf clear period though. especially when a person has no real use for an item, maybe they WILL donate it, which is great and all, but MANY of us who coupon NEED items that get cleared and we dont go anywhere that the items are getting donated to… but we cant afford to be paying full price or even close to it!

Calling ahead to the store to order a large number is a great idea if you want alot! or do the shelf clearing at teh END of the week when those who need the item has had the chance to fill their needs, THEN stock up on freebies/cheaps for donation purposes!

Be considerate, it gives couponers much better names when 1-3 people dont clear out a store in a few minutes, leaving employees stuck with a week of angry customers….. The consideration WILL come back around..really!

          • DP

            @ Heidi,

I should have clarified. Thanks to all who were not judgemental – to clarify, if anone had read a previous post, the manager at my CVS had previously said that he would not take ANY BOGO coupons for Sobe while they were have a sale. I returned a few days later, and he walked up to me with a total 360 attitiude, and asked me how many coupons I had. I replied about 30 and he said come in Thursday I will order them and he did. I am the sole supporter of a family of 5 so, every bit helps. Thanks for your judmental nature though.

          • laura

I used my 20 sobe coupons at Kroger last week and got a GREAT deal. They were on the mega sale and they had HUNDREDS so my 40 bottles didn’t even make a dent in their supplies.
            $1.89- $.80= $1.09 (sale price w/ card) *40= $43.60
-$20 (mega sale $4 off per 8 bottles)
            – $37.80 ($1.89 * 20 BOGO coupons- gave me original price off not sale pirce)
            TOTAL= 40 Sobes free + $14.20 MM!!!

          • heidi

            @ jack
I bought all 12 on a Friday since all 4 CVS stores had been completely out starting Sunday morning. And I didn’t have 50 Sobe coupons. I had about 25 or so but I don’t see why that matters since I didn’t even use them all. And anytime I want to “stock up” on an item I go to more than one store because I know that I am not the only one that uses coupons.

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s a little over the top! No wonder stores get sick of all this coupon business regardless of whether they get paid for it or not.

          • Julie

I think the key here is, as Collin has suggested before, to call when the sale first starts and tell them how many you’d like them to order for you. That way they get the transactions, and you get what you want without taking all of them so that others can’t have any. Personally, I find it very frustrating if I get to a store early in the week and the sale items are already totally cleared out. Not everyone can get there on Sunday to clear the shelves.

          • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am with Julie, order ahead!! Last time they were bogo I called my mngr, he gladly ordered 50 for me, so I did not clear the shelves for other people, and still got all I wanted in the flavor I drink.

        • Mary S.

60 of one item? That is excessive and that is why many cashiers and other customers roll their eyes at couponers. If I have coupons for more than two or three of the same deal then I get in my car and drive to several different stores so I don’t deplete anyone’s stock.

          • Theresa C

This is ridiculous. The manager at my CVS anticipated the sale and ordered cases and cases of SOBE. He was advertising it on the outside sign “don’t forget your coupons”. If they run out, get a raincheck. CVS rainchecks don’t ever expire and you can shop when everything is stocked. As for me, we have 7 kids in our house and 60 SOBE doesn’t go very far…

          • Dania

I have to agree. 60 of any item is excessive to say the very least.I have a family of 6 living off of one income and I could never fathom bringing 60 of anything home. And flavored water? Why on Earth would I want each of my family members to have a total of 10 flavored water bottles to their name? I just don’t get it. Maybe I’m missing something. Since when is flavored water a staple worth stockpiling, even if it is cheap?

      • susan

Yeah…the woman said it was up to the manager’s discretion. Ugh. I guess sobe wouldn’t like hearing about cvs denying sales…. It just shouldn’t be this hard!

        • susan

Oh and every other time I’ve done this at cvs I’ve used 6 bogo coupons and gotten 12 sobes free. No other cvs has ever had an issue with it.

    • Marisha G

Just to add some thoughts… first CVS’s ad limits it to 6 BOTTLES so even if the manager says different, that’s CVS’s official corporate policy.

Second, if you have the same B1G1 free coupons as I do, from the heads or tails game, it clearly says right on the coupon “Only one coupon per purchase”. I’ve had a few cashiers point that out to me.

The problem is, Sobe WILL follow up with CVS or any store that accepts their coupons to make sure they followed the guidelines set forth by Sobe. Sobe won’t reimburse the store if they don’t.

      • Dreya

1 coupon per purchase = 1 coupon per item. 1 coupon per transaction = 1 coupon per transaction. So, if the Q says 1 per purchase, and you are purchasing four of that item, you may use four coupons. (Unless a store Q Policy has a limit of, say, 2 like Qs per transaction.) Hope that makes sense.

      • fran

Marisha, if you buy 6 items, you can use 6 coupons…this is what “one per purchase” means. If the coupon stated “one per transaction”, then you can only use one like coupon.

        • Marisha G

Oh wow, it’s been a long Monday! I didn’t catch that, sorry. Maybe the cashier for Susan was having a long Monday too and thought it said one per transaction as well. Thanks for the clarification. (:

  9. april a

That is good they need one. I was there today and the cashier was arguing with me about some of my coupons. I made her void the items because she wouldnt take the coupons. I also told her I would use them at Target where I dont have any problems with them. She seemed to care less.

  10. robyn

my gosh. this will be interesting to see.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh, I CANT WAIT to whip this policy out next time my Walgreens manager tells me that I Cant use my coupon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh???? You might be surprised at what that policy is going to say. What makes you think it is going to be in your favor?????

  12. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I hope they have something in print about the use of B&W printed coupons! This is my biggest problem there!

    • Jen

I’ve had that problem too! The cashier said their manager would not allow ANY printed coupons because of fraud issues. I told her that it should be posted in the store so that I didn’t waste my time and theirs shopping for things that I would not end up buying since they wouldn’t let me use the coupons that I had. I left without getting any of the items I had selected.
I emailed corporate about it but never heard anything back.

  13. DP

I don’t personally shop @ Walgreens, but as my husband says, you may not WANT a policy..as it may not work in your favor-just a thought..

    • Jessica K

I guess I don’t care if we can’t do certain things anymore. I just want consistency!

    • Hotcrner3b

I was thinking the same thing. I hope it turns out for the best, but a lot of times when companies make a change, it doesn’t seem to be in favor of the consumer.

    • Jessica K

I think I don’t care if they tell us we can’t use coupons at all. I just want things to be consistent!!!

    • michele

This was my original thought when I read Collin’s post. Wonder what will change?…..
I have been fortunate enough to have a coupon friendly manager at my (new) local Walgreens. Her only problem is with the people who come in with a ton of coupons clearing the shelves and openly admit that they are reselling the merchandise at yard sales and flea markets. (Which I find personally distasteful.) But I explained to her that , no matter what the end use of the product, except for having empty shelves, it is a winning situation for her and the company, as manufacturers pay for the majority of the coupon usage. After explaining this, she seemed to “get it.” Let’s just wait and see what the “new corporate policy” brings for us savvy shoppers!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’ve never had any problems at my favorite Wags, but there is one that I occassionaly have to go into and most of the time I walk out empty handed because they won’t take my coupon.

Personally, I don’t mind playing by the rules. I simply want to know what the rules are so that I can play. I think that’s the way most of us feel.

  14. Robin

    SERIOUSLY!! – IT’S ABOUT DANG TIME!!!!! 🙂
Maybe I will go back there someday now!!

  15. Pam

Hope a revamp of their Register Rewards program is next.

    • Michelle

Girl, you aren’t kidding!!!!! I’d rather wait for CVS to go on sale as I don’t need crappy overpriced fillers there! And how come they will adjust down the price of a coupon attached to an item but let us use a $10 RR “coupon” for 39 cent jello? LOL

  16. fran

I would love to see them change the item to coupon ratio. You can go into CVS, buy 2 items, give them 2 mfr. coupons and as many ECBs as needed, but not Walgreens!

  17. Candy

I just hope it’s a good coupon policy. It could make things a lot worse if it’s a terrible policy, like the Targets around here.

    • DP

Exactly! But as far as the 1 TQ per item per transaction rule- That is the one thing the cashiers overlook when I smile sweetly and say ” I will separate the orders for you”..:)

      • NolaGirl

Target does not have a 1TQ per item per transaction rule. Their policy states “We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.” To view the policy go to https://www.target.com/Coupon-Policy-Store-Merchandise-Information-Company-Help/b/2223357011?ie=UTF8&ref=br_bx_Target%20Stores%20Coupon%20Policy.

Inconsistency and Register Rewards are the real problems at Walgreens. The restricts are ridiculous.

        • Brea

I don’t think she’s talking about a Target policy, but the fine print that’s on almost every Target Q now, that says only 1 per transaction.

        • Jen

The Target coupons often say “one coupon per transaction” in the fine print. I think that’s what she was referring to.

      • scott

“I will separate the orders for you” I like that approach – very funny. I usually say “We can do them all in separate tranactions if you like, but I was trying to save you the trouble.” 😉

        • DP

          Good one 🙂

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i dont like WAGS either. maybe this will make it better.

  19. Shelly T.

I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand if it works in our favor, ie price adjusting coupons, using two coupons on BOGO deals etc. Then YES I am all for it. I don’t know why I have a feeling that it won’t be that way though. Maybe because all my local WAGS have told me that it is fraud to adjust a coupon down, even by a penny. When I told them that CVS and Target do it all the time with no problems at all. They told me that it came from the District Manager, because they had been receiving tons of emails/letters/calls to corporate complaining about coupon usage. So I guess we shall see.

  20. Rachel

I’m so excited! At this point, I don’t even care what they put in the policy as long as they follow it! Well, ok…I do care, but it’s about time! I just hope they they follow it! This is awesome news! I bet they received many complaints and lost a lot of customers. Perhaps I can start shopping at Walgreens again! Yay!

  21. Mitch

We shall see. Cause they take their own Internet coupons but say the rest are frauds. It is nice to see this community got some action from Walgreen’s, even if we dont know the details yet. Thanks as always!
    http://www.gaynycdad.com

  22. Chandra

This looks interesting and exciting! I wonder what their policy will be like. I honestly don’t shop at Walgreens because of their lack of a coupon policy. I only go couponing to stores where I can print out their coupon policy and bring it with me in case I have any trouble!

  23. onelostdragon

I have been waiting for Walgreens to come out with a coupon policy . I have 3 walgreens in my town and all 3 have different way they accept coupons , now with a policy they have to all accept coupons the same way . i just hope this policy is a good 1 for us couponers , this policy can also turn us away from walgreens , i can only hope for the best , and luckily theres a CVS opening soon near me.

  24. carriebush29

    FINALLY111111 ;0

  25. Mary

    this sorta scares me

  26. Michelle

I think they watched Collin’s 3 part series & realized they have a HUGE problem regarding coupons. And training as well! LOL

You know, if their policy stinks, it will make me NEVER go there as opposed to my almost never now. If their policy rocks, they may actually be able to get decent business for their overpriced stuff!

I will be pulling up the policy on the 26th the second my feet hit the floor! I can’t wait to see!!!!

  27. Jana

    it’s about time!

  28. Karin

Hope it would be a good policy for us.

  29. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I think many of you are going to be surprised if you think this is going to be in your favor. Somehow, I don’t think Wag’s is going that direction especially with the way the act with coupons now.l

    • Lisa

I agree. This could be the beginning of the end of my shopping at Wags.

  30. mb

I work at a walgreens, the policy is basicly what it has been (atleast for my store I’m not sure about other stores).

    • oconnorsavings

so what is it for your store? is yours one of the goods? the awfuls? or the middle of the road?

      • mb

my store is actually very good. Basicly you can use all store coupons and 1 manufactured coupon per item, that does include RR because RR work like manufactured coupons. Also if and item is B1G1 an B1G1 coupon usually works w/ it unless the system doesnt allow it. So I dont know how the new rules will play into my store.

    • 8turboturtle8

How does your store operate the coupons? I have one store here I avoid like the plague but 3 others that never give me a hassle.

  31. tilla

i’m thinking a policy may not benefit me…my cosmetics counter gals are always super friendly and let me do back to back to back transactions. some walgreens arleady limit their daily rr’s and mine does not. Also…many stores have a policy and their cashiers are still uneducated, so don’t look for a policy to solve all your problems

  32. Lori

I may try to get in the last of my deals before the 26th. I’ve got a great manager that does everything and really understands that the couponers bring money INTO his store! Hope that the policy is as coupon friendly as RiteAids. Talk about a couponing corporation! I’ve had nothing but greatness from them.

  33. jen

I dont know what the policy is going to say but I know when I was there on Sunday I had several workers and manager tell me they are trying to become one of the best coupon friendly stores. So fingers crossed that they are bc I havent had problems in the past as far as rite aid I am starting to have problems since they added the up rewards.

    • oconnorsavings

I hope that is true! I LOVE my wags around here, never had any problem except my first time and it was just a crummy cashier but the manager(who was watching her) jumped in and saved the day 🙂 I have good luck with RiteAid too except one specific store, all the cashiers and managers there are just miserable crabby people 🙁 CVS however.. I ALWAYS have problems with(in over a 100 mile radius!)! So I HOPE they wont go that way!

  34. Janet

The coupon policy is so ridiculous at my Walgreens that a published plolicy can’t be any worse! I’m not fond of the RR system and just lost $5 so I’m pretty set on just sticking with Rite Aid and CVS.

  35. Brea

I’m afraid this policy won’t benefit me as well, unless they finally let me use a BOGO Q on a BOGO sale. Frankly, having a coupon policy to “whip” out hasn’t helped me much at Rite Aid or Target. Not only does it seriously fluster the cashier and manager, they always just give me the line that store managers have the ability to change the policy. Obviously we can call CS, but it a whole lot of hassle. Just give me a nice cashier and a register that doesn’t beep!

    • cjs

Ditto what Brea said…I’m happy that Wags is coming out with a ‘uniform’ policy, but whether the employee follows it (with 6 people behind you in line) without me having to ‘whip out’ the policy or call corporate on the spot is a different story. Hope I made sense. Apparently, the SoBe coupons are causing CVS managers make different ‘rules’, too. I tried to use the SoBe coupons for 6 bottles on the BOGO sale awhile back, and they said I had to pay for at least one, then two would be free. But, a few weeks prior, I had used 5 coupons for 10 free without any issues at a different CVS. I sent an e-mail to CVS corporate about it last week and no response…grrrr. My wish is simple…but probably never going to happen…..each store have their own coupon policy that managers & cashiers are trained on (and re-trained if it changes) and actually follow.

I decided I was done with Walgreens last weekend, when I had 3 items and 3 coupons/RR. The register kept beeping, refusing to take the last RR. I remembered reading here that some were having trouble with the $/2 coupons counting as TWO, rather than one. Apparently, that was the problem, because once I added on that little 25 cent tube of Sixlets, it magically took my RR. I wouldn’t have minded if it was because my subtotal was less than the amount of the RR, but that wasn’t the case. It was the coupon/item ratio. I’m tired of it, and am not going to keep throwing cheap candy on my order just to be able to use my last coupon. My local CVS is so VERY supportive of couponers, and the manager is always very happy to see a coupon being used. Plus, I rack up extra ECB on the quarterly spending. Wags doesn’t give me that.

    • Jen

That is how it should work, a $/2 will attach to two items, a $/3 will attach to 3, etc. That is how it is supposed to be. Not much fun!

    • tilla

usually this is because the RR’s do not cover tax, and if you are a few cents short of the tax you have to have a filler. 99% of coupons do not cover the tax

      • Jen

It wasn’t that the subtotal was too low, though. I had a $1 RR, and my subtotal was $2 something.

That’s really good new considering I (new coupon-er) too had a bad experience with my local Walgreens just last week (Aug 21). I did write to them regarding my experience (see below).

    Hello,

The shopping experience I’m about to describe during my recent visit at Walgreens isn’t probably anything new for your department. After reading some of the blogs and posts online, apparently it’s a very common occurrence at Walgreens.

I went to purchase a few personal care items and happened to have about 3-4 manufacturer coupons possibly saving me couple of additional dollars. Most of these were either printed right from the manufacturer’s website or received via emails/offers. After scanning the items that I had brought over to the front checkout register, as I was getting ready to present the coupons, the cashier (Mr. Jordano) immediately said, “oh we don’t accept those” without even looking at them or reading what they were. I asked, “why not? these are manufacturer coupons”. The cashier stated, “yea we don’t accept the coupons printed from the internet”. I put the coupons away and carried on with the transaction as I was in no mood to argue or hold up the line.

After leaving the store, I called the store and asked for the manager on duty to confirm what I was told by the cashier at the checkout.

I spoke to the duty store manager (Mr. John O’connor) who stated, “well I do allow the use of the internet coupons whenever I’m on duty as long as it’s not 20-30 coupons and they are not being misused”. Although not the most satisfactory, but reasonable answer I thought. I then described my experience and questioned why was I told something contrary by the cashier. The manager said, ” I don’t know, but maybe another manager trained them that way and I guess he didn’t know. It (guideline) depends on the manager on duty” I asked for the name of the another manager and according to him, it is Mr. Accvedo.

I have to admit this issue makes me absolutely CRAZY! Why? Because Walgreens may allow managers to set their own guidelines but when those guidelines conflict with their national advertising, it’s just not right or fair.

I expect to be able to trust a stores advertising. Especially, when there is a coupon section right on the Walgreens website (under “save” tab next to “weekly Ad” tab – https://print.coupons.com/couponweb/Offers.aspx?pid=13473&zid=cs27&nid=10&bid=alk0822220814c7f0937b110416). For example, let’s start with the August Coupon Book. Right on the front page it’s encouraging you to go print coupons from the Walgreens website (which by the way are just a few select coupons.com coupons).

After reading/hearing about the similar experiences from others, I think the issue needs some immediate attention. I believe the policy/guideline needs to be universal/consistent among all Walgreens or at least within individual store. Also, these so called coupon guidelines must be either posted online or made available in print at the stores for the customer upon request.

I’m also looking to draw some media attention(both broadcast and print) to the issue as well as reporting to the FTC once I can get enough supporters to sign a petition.

Walgreens staff/management seem to be living in the stone ages because the rest of us out here are doing more and more things online. The companies are sending more offers via electronic medium/emails/websites because delivering offers/coupons electronically is more efficient, effective and “Green”. I hope they know that consumers do have a choice and there are plenty of other drugstores and retailers that gladly accept my “internet coupons” such as Rite Aid, CVS, Target, Kmart and Walmart just to name a few.

    Regards,

P.S. I returned everything I bought that day at the store.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Look at all the time and money you LOST in going back. That is not money saving. You really think you hurt Wag’s by returning all your stuff?? Some of you people get way to wired up about this stuff. You need to chill out.

      • Jennifer

How is she losing money if she returned her items? That literally does not make sense. She was just sharing her story, not asking for your rude comments.

  38. Emily

I personally think ANY policy is better than none… at least there are rules to follow and NO ONE should have an excuse in not knowing what they are.

  39. litamustaine

Its good news…sort of….here’s what I mean…Walmart has a POLICY. I’ve printed it off their website & have pulled it out several times when I’ve had trouble, but it doesnt seem to help. I’ve had such a hard time at several walmarts even witha policy in place…will it be the same way at Walgreens????

    • oconnorsavings

This is my concern as well! I believe the 2 are sister companies aren’t they???? That was my first thought when I saw the original post.. well Walmarts “policy” is virtually worthless …. OR it could go agains us by stating we cant do certain things… just wait and see I guess ….Lets all hope for easier! Maybe a REASONABLE limit of purchases would be nice too(to restrict from shelf clearing) BUT NOT 1 per day or anything retarted like that! lol

      • Sandy

Separate corporations. Not at all connected.

  40. Debbie

I also have always great luck at Walgreens cosmetic counter. The lady always looks for coupons that she has behind the counter that I may be able to use. Sometimes they are better than the ones I have. I have never had any problems with my local Walgreens taking my coupons, register rewards, etc., until yesterday. I bought some Pantene shampoos on a prior day and used my manufactor coupons and got a $2 register reward. I returned yesterday to buy some more shampoos, presented a manufactor coupon and the register reward I received from the prior transaction. The lady at the cosmetic counter said I could not use register rewards from prior purchases for the same items. Nowhere on the register reward does it state that. There were some exclusions, but this was not one of them. She called the manager over, and he said he didn’t know, and told her to do whatever she thought was correct. WOW!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

yea.. catalina coupon does not allow rollovers. unless you get lucky

    • Dreya

You should be able to use the RR on the new purchase. However, a new RR will usually not print if it is the same product. So, you should have been allowed to use your RR to pay, but the catalina machine would not have printed you another RR. Occasionally, there will be a glitch in the system, and you will be able to roll them (use a RR for a like product and another will print), but not very often.

  41. Cathy

    YaY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Every time I leave Walgreen – I’m mad. I don’t know if this coupon policy will give me incentive to step foot back into that awful store ever again. We shall see.

  43. Christylee

Well a policy is a good thing rather it is in our favor or not really doesn’t matter. Like Wal-Marts 40 coupons per transaction or cashier needs a csm override? So nothing is ever perfect. I cannot wait for the manager at one local Wags store to have something to put in his face, short of swear words coming out of his mouth I was never treated at any store so badly! Emailed corporate to report him and corprate just emails him and he calls me, now why would I want to talk to him when he was so rude?!!
Off the subject of Wags, I recently had a death in my family and was off my coupon horse and had like $25 in Extra Care bucks expire, I was thinking of sending them to CVS corprate to see if they would honor them or give me new ones, has anybody done this or have something like this happen?

    • tilla

couldn’t hurt to ask, sorry about your loss:(

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I had read somewhere that if one expires, just call the 1-800 number for CVS and they’ll reissue them. I haven’t tried this, so I don’t know for sure if it will help…but apparently, someone has and it did! Good Luck!

    • Leah Rockwell

I was told by a CVS cashier that CVS can take expired ECBs up to 1 week (I think) and if it’s later than that, to call the # on your care card, and corporate will reissue them. I’m not sure if this is true, as I have not tried it myself. But it wouldn’t hurt to try! I know I have used expired ECBs at CVS before – no problem.

  44. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’ve been to 2 Walgreens store and both store have a very poor customer service. One store stated that they don’t accept coupons that were printed online due to fraudulent activities that are happening. I called the customer service hotline and they told me that someone will be calling me back to answer my questions and never got the call. Between the two store that I go to, I thought maybe it is just one or two employee but several employees I’ve encountered, they are not customer friendly and worst of all too, the coupon book that are suppose to be available for customers are never available.

  45. D'ana

I wonder if it iill it be an actual “Policy” or some type of statement online just reiterating that they do not have a coupon policy??

  46. MandM

GOOD! I just made a formal complaint to the district mgr here in NC asking for this very thing. WE NEED IT!

  47. tilla

completely off subject, but just wondering what you all think i should do. i’m a non smoker, but don’t begrudge those who do smoke as long as they are respectful in public so that my chidlren aren’t exposed to it due to asthma. I recently read that 14.8 % of adults smoke, so that means 85% of us do not. Most businesses in my state, are smoke free by law but some such as Native American owned have special rules. Anyway, i was recently in one such business that has signs up that say “smoke free lobby” but they do have a room that is smoking. a lady was smoking in lobby and some folks were complaining. I said in passing to an employee, that she was smoking (not really complaining just pointing it out). Employee said to me “if you don’t like it, stay out of smoking establishments, this is a smoking business”..uh if 85% of adults are non smokers, wouldn’t risk your whole business on smokers…most of us there were non smokers. Just wondering if i should complain or let it go, i’m irritated

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

If it bugs you then complain.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

First of all you can only speak for yourself not others, if there is a smoking area on the premises, more than likely the second hand smoke is all over the facility. Smoke does not stay in one area like the smokers. Smoke-free premise usually means there is no smoking in the building or on the campus, i.e. hospitals. Also, the assumption that 85% of the population is non-smokers means that is who the business should cater to doesn’t make sense. If 15% of the population smokes and has the money, that may be who the business is going to cater to. By Federal law they have to provide non-smoking areas and most businesses are now smoke-free meaning no smoking inside the building or out.

Based on your description the entire establishment is not smoke-free so the employee is right–it is a smoking business. You can complain but it probably won’t do any good. If you don’t want to be around smoke then don’t go to an establishment that has smoking in the building because more than likely you will get exposed to second hand smoke. I have asthma and so my bronchus can detect smoke a mile away. For health reasons I have to stay away from any smoky areas. Complain but establishments particularly on Native American land so have some legal rights to establish their own rules regarding smoking (and other issues).

As an asthmatic, I could complain all the time about smoking. Smokers come into buildings that are smoke-free but reek of smoke. Are they breaking the rules? The smoker isn’t smoking but smells like smoke. No, the smoker is not. The same goes for perfume.

Your arguments do not make sense and therefore I would suggest pick your battles and quit going to the establishment.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

If your children have asthma do them a favor and don’t take a risk of exposing them to second hand smoke of any kind. Stay away from the establishment. The business is not going to worry about your child’s health, only you as the responsible parent can do that by keeping the child away from smoke.

  48. Kelly

I was just at Walgreens on August 19th and tried to use a BOGO coupon and another manufacturer coupon and the machine beeped. I asked what the problem was and he said that Walgreens was changing their coupon policy — allowing only one coupon per item. I guess we’ll see……..

    • Dania

I certainly wish more people would understand the concept that a BOGO coupon attaches to the free item and a second MFR Q to the purchased one. I get that reasoning all the time at Walgreens , “it’s only 1 coupon per item” which I reply with “That’s fine, I’m purchasing two items and using two coupons. It doesn’t matter that one will end up being free.” They never get it.

  49. Sandy

I love my Walgreen’s! Each and every staff member is super nice, and not one of them have ever made me feel uneasy because I’ve had coupons, whether many or few. Makes no difference to them how many transactions I make either. I think having a coupon policy stemming from Corporate will alleviate many issues for some but, I wouldn’t bank on it being in our favor when it comes to the deals. Unfortunately, I think the days of endless freebies are over. I do think there will be great deals out there but just not as many FREES/overages.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

And, I think mainly because so many couponers have made such a big deal out of things not going their way. Stores get sick of it. They don’t care if they get repaid for the coupons, some of you are a pain in the neck to them and they’d rather not deal with it.

      • DP

I am curious..Why are you here?

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My first thought is this person must work for Walgreens. My second thought is I am sure there are other forums other than H2S that would appreciate this perspective so this person might go look else where for making posts these kind of posts.
