I LOVE What I Do…
I’ve had one of those days today… you know, the kinda day when you just feel down in the dumps. I am sad and that’s honestly the truth. I usually try to keep things very positive on my site, but for now… I think I’ll go ahead and speak my mind. Being honest and open always makes me feel a LOT better, so here goes…
I started this blog in the summer of 2008 for family and friends… I couldn’t contain my excitement in the deals I was getting and had to share– that’s where the blog came in. For 6 months I worked day in and day out searching for deals, posting deals, making sure deals were legit and the list goes on. I NEVER realized when I first started blogging that I could actually make money. …So overtime I finally figured this out and was excited to learn that not only could I do what I love, but I could also do it while earning some money in return! And the added and best bonus– I could do this while staying home with my kiddos!
Now… I know… I’m making this sound like a dream job, so let me tell you something you may not realize. I work entirely too much… when you don’t have an 8 to 5 job and the emails never stop rolling on in, it’s hard to know when to stop. I love what I do and I love helping others, so closing my laptop for the night without getting through those last couple emails is one of the hardest things I have to do. I also like to be on top of the deals, but sometimes staying on top of the deals is impossible and I end up being hard on myself for missing a deal. I know this sounds so little in the grand scheme of things, but Hip2Save is a huge part of my life and I take pride in what I do.
As you may have noticed, I posted a Sponsored post earlier today for Mission Tortillas. Quite a few of you seemed very upset by that post and I apologize for that. At the end of the day, I blog because I absolutely LOVE doing it (the money is an added bonus)! If you know me personally, well, you know this. I’m also very sensitive, so reading hurtful comments doesn’t sit well with me. I was tempted to delete the post altogether, but I didn’t because lots of you took the time to leave helpful comments with recipes and more.
If you read my blog daily, you should know I RARELY do sponsored posts. In fact, this was my third sponsored post since starting this blog over 2 years ago! I am very picky about the sponsored posts I choose and try to pick ones that are relevant to my site.
I appreciate my life, love my husband, have 3 amazing kids, a very supportive extended family, and an amazing blog with awesome readers! With that being said, I was pretty upset, frustrated, offended, surprised by the comments left in the sponsored post today. Now, as many of you know, I am no stranger to negative comments; however, what bothered me today and what prompted me to write this post were the comments that I had somehow changed, that Hip2Save had changed in the recent months?!
I am here to say in writing that it is still me, the same Collin, who started this blog a couple years ago. I still love finding and snagging deals, still shop with my giant coupon binder, still get excited when I score something for free, still sign up for way too many samples. I am slightly insulted that readers have accused me of changing, saying that my blog is somehow not the same. The only thing that changed recently for me was the weather; during the summer months, I dedicate much more times to my kids and inevitably a little less time on Hip2Save. If you have felt like there was less of me and my personality infused in recent posts, there likely was as I was giving more of “me” to my kids.
Hip2Save has become what it is today because of YOU, so thank you! You guys rock!
Each of you who take the time to come to my blog, leave comments, and send emails are truly my virtual friends. I know we have never met in person (well, I’ve actually met some of you!), but we all have a common interest with our passion for saving money, using coupons, finding deal etc. I feel like there’s a great community here on Hip2Save and I don’t want to lose that. Now that the summer is coming to an end, I would love for you to email me any ideas you have for the site. Would you like to see a new feature?! Do you have a post topic or video idea? Let me know!

Collin, I APPRECIATE all you hard work and hope you continue, if people dont like it they can certainly stop using your blog and most of all you HARD work and figure out their own deals! Good luck and again your blog is just the BEST!!!!
OMG! You’re site rocks!!! I was shown the “coupon deals” by a friend which also led me to your site a year ago and since that day at least 6 out of 7 days of the week I check your site. I’m not talking about 1 time a day I’m talking several times a day sometimes several times within an hour. I find your site to be by far the best site and easiest to use out of all the sites I have come across. I will be honest and say some of the things that you post I am not interested in or do not pertain to my area however that is the best part because you cover so many stores it gives everyone a chance to get deals. I love your site and I think that as much work must go into making this site run if anyone cannot appreciate it then they can move on. Collin, you do a great job and just remember that every tree has a sour LEMON but it doesn’t mean the rest are sour! Thanks for all you do! May God bless you and your family!

Girl-YOU rock!! I read the tortilla post earlier, and wasn’t the least bit offended. I haven’t read the comments on that post, but it REALLY irritates me when people attack you on YOUR site. And as far as you being on here less during the summer, I haven’t been on here as much either. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a few times a day, everyday, instead of all day, everyday ;). Instead, I’ve been spending my days at the park w/ my kiddos.
If people were paying for your services, I could understand being a little upset, but they’re not. This site is free for all of us! People that feel the need to attack you, should really take a look at themselves…just sayin’…cuz negative people annoy me 🙂
Love your site – I check it multiple times during the day to make sure I’m up to date on all the latest deals, and often E-mail posts to friends/family that I think they’d find useful. Keep doing what you’re doing, and keep your head up! You rock!
Keep up the good work! I personally love reading your blog and have scored many great deals along the way. My fiance got hooked on the follow me Monday’s (he used to be stationed where you are so memories are there). His new goal is to use so many coupons that we don’t pay much if anything for groceries. You helped me get him turned back on to the commisary and we are saving much more because of your follow me Monday clip.
Negative people are just that – negative. Move on people!! Guess they forgot that old addage that if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all. I don’t know how you do this, you are up late and have 3 littles one to get going the next day. I have the luxury of reading all your hard work during the day at work. Mean people stink!

Collin- That really took a lot of guts to write that. I appreciate your honesty but part of me is also pissed that you even had to spend more of your time explaining to the few “bad worms” about what you do and why.Your sensitivity is a result of someone who has great character. What a truly great person you are for the awesome job you do everyday. I thank God for your blog everyday b/c my family would be financially struggling right now if it weren’t for your blog. Keep up the good work and I just wanna know if we can have a giveaway for Lemon shirts with tortillas on the back? lol 😉
Why shouldn’t you get paid for what you do?!?! Anybody else who spend as much time as you do providing a service for others is expecting to get paid…even if you love what you do, you absolutely deserve to get paid for your time and service… and please don’t let anyone lead you to believe that there is something wrong or “selfish” about that! This is not being a sell out… I am sure getting some compensation, which I am sure by the way is not enough considering the amount of time you put into researching and posting deals – is ensuring that you are able to continue to do this – to provide this information to others. I think sometimes people associate getting paid for something as meaning that you heart is less in it. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Lots of people have service oriented jobs… teachers, social workers, doctors, ministers… this doesn’t mean they care any less about helping people… but of course you should get paid for working and providing a service… that’s the only way to take care of yourself and your family as well. You have a lot to be proud of, and all the positive comments left by grateful followers prove it! Thank you for what you do.
Collin, I am a fellow blogger. You are right it is hard to stay on top of the deals and shop the stores and find the deals and you do that and share your info for FREE! I feel that with all the work I do on my blog, I should get something out of it. A few sponsored posts would be great. Don’t let those dimwits get you down. Keep smiling and continue doing the posts. If they don’t like it, too bad. Let them log on somewhere else. They’ll be the ones missing out on a great blog. I’ve learned so much from you. You’ve taught so many people so many things that these few comments shouldn’t matter. Continue on with what you are doing, the way you want to do it. you have the right to do any sponsorships that you wish, many websites like this charge us to visit and you do not. do people not realize that sponsorships will help keep your site free? running a website costs money, and you deserve to be paid for the 60 plus hours a week you probably put into this. You DESERVE to not come here and have your feelings hurt. I have also seen people say things like “oh if i got free stuff all the time i could do that too” well guess what folks, get off your arse and do your own blog if you want free stuff…put in the leg work, the hard work, and you too can have that. Colin- Your site has changed my life. Not only the way I shop but it also gave me something to get excited about! I love shopping but as a family on a very tight budget money was always tight and even grocery shopping was stressful. Now I enjoy to grocery shop and it’s a challenge for me to see how much I can save! My family enjoys spending time doing fun little extra things too because of the money we are saving. I stumbled upon your site just a couple of weeks before I lost my job. Now not only can I stay home with my kids but we also still have money in the bank! You and your site are a huge blessing in my life and truly inspiring! You are helping so many of us! Keep up the great work!!
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time.
But then again it’s easy for us to tell you to just ignore the negative comments. Being someone who takes things to heart, I know exactly how hurtful it is when someone says something bad about you. It’s not like we can have our tough military hubbies beat them up, right? 😉
Do people seriously expect you to post tons of deals every day, dedicate your days and nights on the blog to help them score free stuff but as soon as you do something that actually makes you some money to compensate for some of the time you put in this, they start complaining??? The entitlement thing is getting way out of hand in this country – they are entitled to benefit from your work but you’re not supposed to bring in a extra buck??? That’s just …. (fill in the blank).
For people who have an issue with the sponsored posts – don’t read them! It says right in the beginning of the post what it’s all about.
Thank you Collin for all the hard work. I clipped coupons before but you’ve shown us how much more can be done and I’ve seen a huge difference in our grocery bills. Just a few days ago I was thinking that you must spend sooooo much time on putting all of this together. Don’t let anyone stop you!
Collin – you are an amazing person to do all of this and have time for your family. I run a home based daycare with 7/8 kids (including my own 2). I homeschool 5 of them and try to be involved in the community. Without you – I would not be able to save the amount of money I save (my husband has been laid off for the better part of 2 years), I would not be able to give back as much as I do ( in terms of buying (getting for free or cheap) extra and donating) and I would be in such a worse place. I am so loyal to your blog BECAUSE of your personality and relativity to my life. Don’t let negative bloggers get you down. The majority of us feel you are a very responsible, caring, honest person. Those negative nellies are going to be negative wherever they go – unfortunately, they just choose to vent here. Keep doing what your doing – we love you!

That being said, it’s your blog and people making ignorant comments should probably stop reading and go elsewhere for their deals, or what a concept, do it themselves and see how easy it is for them! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, because of you, not only have we saved a ton of money, but this year when our daughter was born with health problems, i was able to quit my job and stay home with her and we have survived mainly due to your postings and he grace of God. Recently a friend and I started our own very small time local blog and not only have you been an awesome help to us, but we send all of our peeps to your site. Anyone posting negative comments obviously has way too much time on their hands. Not to mention they must be miserable people if they only way they feel better about themselves is to post negative things about someone else. Either read a post or don’t, but no need to leave a rude comment. No one makes you read this or any other blog. The 1st amendment allows for freedom of speech, if you don’t like what is being said then move on. Start your own blog and say what you will, chances are no one will be reading. I love this blog b/c it’s helped me get the start I needed with couponing and continuing to find great deals. Thanks for the hard work and keep it up!!
Collin, I love reading Hip2Save and I tell everyone that asks me about couponing to read your site. I have found tons of great deals by reading your blog. I can’t imagine the countless hours you spend investing in this and I’m sorry that people can be so mean. It’s easy for others to hide behind the anonymity of the internet. Thank you for putting yourself out there for us everyday. I feel like I have gotten to know you since I started reading your blog almost a year ago. Sometimes I’ll say something to my husband like, “OMG, Collin just posted the most awesome deal!” And my hubby is like, “Who is Collin?”. I just started reading this blog a few months ago and I LOVE IT!! I am a full time teacher and don’t have time to scope out the deals. Thank you sooo much for doing it for me! I love that I can just check your coupon match-up and then run to Walgreens or CVS. I have told lots of people about your blog…and they love it too!

II just have one thing to say – how could they do that to you? The nerve of some people! I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate what you do!!! My sister intorduced me to this site a few months ago, and I am addicted!!! CVS has a sign in the front that says “have coupons?” and I think that is directed towards me. haha!! I havce turned into the coupons QUEEN!! If you do I have to hand it to you. Your site is amazing. I traverse through dozens of websites all throughout the day, but the site I always hit first is yours. No, I am not saying this to make you feel good, but I honestly do. The reason is because of relevance. So many sites will post good deals but often long after it breaks. You are quick to get the information out to us readers and I have often scored huge on offers because of your hard work. I steer many others to your website because I consider H2S the first stop. I have not read any of the comments that brought you down and could care less. That’s garbage. Just know, like many others, I appreciate your effort and dedication to this website. I personally liked the sponsered ad and am making the fruit salsa and chips for my Houseparty this weekend. I love your site and love the deals that I am able to get. As another military family we always love finding ways to make our very hard earned money stretch further. You are amazing at what you do here and dont let a couple foolish people get you down. First of all, Hip2Save ROCKS and so do YOU Collin!!! In my personal opinion, there is nothing wrong with making money doing a sponsored post for a company that more than likely, you have given FREE advertisement to several times in deal or coupon posts. It’s not as though you were advertising a 2011 Red Corvette that you were trying to intice your frugal readers into buying!!!
I can understand how and why that would hurt your feelings and make you feel the way you do. Like others have said in these comments, those negative readers should have scrolled past if they didn’t like the post. You keep up the good work. It is OBVIOUS that what you do on Hip2Save is helping others save money! Maybe some people just have a thing against Mission Tortillas…who knows 🙂

But this is not the first blog i’ve seen people talk about products, either paid for the write up or given the products free from the company. It just means you are becoming popular and companies value your opinions. Look at all the responses to this– over 600. I have no idea why people would criticize for the Mission post. people are so ridiculous and if they don’t like what you post, then they shouldn’t visit your site. as I was eating my free cinnastix tonight, I was just thinking again, of how much I love hip2save. 🙂 🙂
