Do you have a room/closet/garage full of old or used car seats, cribs, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, play yards, high chairs and/or toddler beds?! If so, gather it all up and head over to your local Toys R Us or Babies R Us for the Great Trade-In Event which begins today, August 27th, and runs through September 19th. For each item that you trade in, you will snag a 25% off discount on participating product categories from participating manufacturers (Babi Italia, Baby Cache, Baby Trend, Bergamo, Bertini, Britax, Carter’s, Chicco, Contours by Kolcraft, Cosco, Delta, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Jeep, Little Tikes, Safety 1st, Sorelle and Step2).

Keep in mind that you can trade in these used items regardless of whether you purchased the item from a Toys R Us/Babies R Us store and you do NOT need a receipt to trade-in a used item. The 25% discount is valid on the day of trade-in only and only valid for in-store use. You can trade in multiple items during the program and you will receive savings for each item traded in. However, you may only use one savings coupon per each new item purchased. Click here for more information or contact your local store for more details.

I’ve been saving our out of date old beat up car seat for this event!

This is awesome! I love when this rolls around each time!
This especially great for those parents using an expired car seat or even a used car seat (one you bought from someone you do not know – maybe a yard sale?) so you can trade that seat in and get a safer one for a discount price. Now is the time to buy car seats since the newer versions are coming out soon and they have marked down the other seats! Car seats usually expire 6 years from the date of manufacturer (found on car seat itself).
Also for those that have kids in an improper seat. Using a booster seat before the child is ready (child under 4 years and 40 pounds is the bare minimum). Take that booster seat in and trade it in for the 25% off coupon and use it towards a 5 point harness!

My husband and I looked into this a while back. Our items were not old or very used but we need a double stroller instead of a single. We contacted the store with questions and it turns out they just destroy and throw away everything you trade-in. I know they do not advertise this but wanted to share that with everyone. We could not bare to have those things destroyed for a coupon so we took them to the women & children’s shelter for them to use. Then I just used the 20% mailer coupon for the double stroller.
I know it’s my opinion, but I would personally only use this deal if your items were very old, worn out, or broken.

I know.. the 25% isn’t much different than the 20% mailers they send out ALL the time. I’m with you on donating to somewhere else!

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You would think they would donate them. Thanks for letting me know about that…I won’t be trading mine in either.

    • Candice B.

But how would they know if they are acceptable to trade? It is easier said than done to be honest.
The purpose of this event is, ” Intended to call attention to the fact that certain used baby products carry potential hazards, but are still in circulation.”
The whole point of these trade in is to get damaged recalled broken and expired/unsafe baby items OFF the market so the materials can be recycled (the parts that can be recycled) and destroyed so no child gets harmed by anything unsafe.

Hey just to add a commet, I work in retail and we aare not allowed to sell/donate even the display models after they have been on display. It is a safety concern. So I agree with the one other commet, it is safer to throw them out.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Beth, that is interesting. I use to work at a Babies R Us and we sold our displays all the time.

I agree that if you do have an item that is safe and within its expiration, it would be a very kind thing to donate it to someone, but I also completely see the point of the promo. These kinds of products are the most important for our children so I’m all for getting rid of unsafe ones. Plus, 25% off a Britax seat is an awesome discount! I feel like it’s a win-win for everyone.

One way to look at this deal would be to ask yourself how much is your car seat worth. If it is worth more than the 5% (difference between trade in coupon and mailer), don’t trade it in, sell it or give it to someone on in need. If it is truly junk (defined as being worth less than 5% of whatever you would buy or unsafe or expired) then trade it in. If it is worth any thing 5% probably won’t be very much $10 on $200 purchase. Just a different way of thinking of it maybe.

Babies R Us has changed their coupon policy since I last worked there, but when I worked there you could use the 25% off trade-in coupon along with a regular 20% off coupon that you would receive in the mail or with from a previous purchase. I do not know if they will still accept this, but it is worth trying.

We have an infant car seat that is past the 7 years recommended using, never been in an accident but still it isn’t recommended to keep using it. Therefore, charity places don’t want to accept it…so, the trade in is a good thing in this case. Just wish they would let me trade it in towards the purchase of a toddler mattress, I’ll be checking with my local store to see if they will.
