Target: Ripping Off Coupon Users?

In the last few months, I’ve received many emails from Hip2Save readers stating that they have experienced issues redeeming coupons for their full value at Target. Check out some of these emails below…

Have there been people having coupon issues with coupons at Target? I typically have lots of coupons to use there at once (due to your awesome site!!). The person at the register appears to be putting them all through even if they flag otherwise and doesn’t say anything. But it doesn’t seem like I save as much as I should and when I get home to further look at the receipt, it appears some have not gone through. I’ve wondered before, so I’m checking more carefully now. For example, I have my receipt for Target here when I tried to get the BIC deals-got 2 packages of pens, at $0.99 each, and they took off the target deal for $1.00 off but I can’t find where the $1 off manufacturer coupon was taken…I hate to stand there and make a fuss and/or figure it out when I have so many coupons there, so I just wondered if you have had any problems or complaints.

**********************************************************************************

I don’t know if you’ve noticed all the comments regarding coupons being automatically (and incorrectly) adjusted down at Target. (For example, the $5/2 Benadryl coupon adjusting to the price of one of the purchased items rather than the full $5–even when no overage is involved.) Well, I thought it was a glitch, and I stopped to inform the manager of my local Target, but he is standing behind the automatic deduction, which surprises me. Why would I go to Target and get less than face value of a coupon that I can get the full value of at Wal Mart or Kroger?

**********************************************************************************

I was wondering if you are experiencing any of problems using coupons at Target. I keep having my coupons value reduced at checkout by the computer. Seems to be only when you are supposed to save so much on two or three items. The computer is automatically reducing coupon value. I emailed Target and informed that I keep getting ripped off. They apologized and said they would investigate it. I have never checked receipts before and am wondering how much money I have lost when I thought I was saving 🙁

Clearly, this is an issue that is happening at Target stores across the country. In fact, there was recently a CBS news station out of Minnesota that broadcast a story entitled “Target Accused of Ripping Off Coupon Users.” Check out the full video here. Apparently, Target is currently investigating the problem so hopefully, it will be resolved soon. In the meantime, I would encourage all of you to review your Target receipts carefully. If you notice an error, be sure to bring your receipt to the customer service desk. You can also contact Target customer service at 1.800.440.0680 or by completing the form found here.

*There is also an online petition available to sign called “Target Corporation: Fix Your Register Software!” There are currently over 1300 signatures and 5000 signatures are needed to submit the petition. Be aware that when you sign the petition, your full name, location and comment will be displayed publicly. On a side note, I am not familiar with Petition Buzz (the site hosting this Target petition) and not exactly sure how the whole process works, but felt that it was still worth mentioning.

This makes so much sense now. I have walked out from Target (a 45 minute drive away) thinking…”Whoa, I just spent way too much money.” But, I didn’t want to make a fuss like a lot of you. Especially when I had a baby and was only getting the items that would’ve been free/super cheap. I will definately check my receipt from now on. I hope they get this resolved…I have no clue how much money I’ve lost there.

The Target stores in my area have been doing this for well over a year. I started following this site about one year ago and when I shopped at Target I did not experiance the same savings so I investigated my receipts. The coupons were beeping and if there was a problem the cashier pushed a button, put the coupon in their drawer and gave me the impression the coupon went through. I started checking my receipts and noticed many of my coupons were not on my receipt. So I started just checking out with my “deals” seperately than my other purchases. I also kept a log of the price on the shelf, my coupon, and what the bottom line should be. I did not check out one time where all the coupons that they rang through were actually on the receipt. They would not correct it there even if I stopped them and pointed it out prior to paying. They just kept saying I had to go to customer service. So I just stopped shopping there. I do not even bother anymore. I do not beleive it is a glitch. As many times as I went to customer service and pointed it out nothing was ever changed. One time they refused to correct it and I ended up having to make many phone calls to get my money back. I would have just given up but it was a movie deal and I was saving $15. So I kept calling and finally I received my refund. Target is not worth it. In this economy I treat every dollar I spend as a vote for what stores I want to stay in business. Even if I have to pay more I will do so if what I get in return is better service, treated with respect, and treated as a valued customer. My dollar does matter.

    • Deb

I think you speak for many of us Angela-well said.

    • Erikah

I can say I agree with your comment about your dollars being votes for the store. I shopped at Target today to get the Johnson & Johnson first aid kits that are .97 cents. My family and I work for a non profit Org for the homeless and when the $3 off 3 coupon came out- I thought what a nice FREE gift to put in goody bags for those in need. So I went to a coupon site and bought 15 $3 off 3 coupons, which would allow 45 First aid kits for the homeless in Raleigh NC. Of course I didn’t pick up all 45 and use the 15 at once, but here and there I would pick up a few kits from different stores. I visited CVS, Walgreens and Wal-Mart, all of which were happy to grant my amount off. Today at lunch, I swing by Target only to have the cashier tell me the coupon will not work because they are less than the value of the coupon. After calling the manager over, I was informed that they would ” grant” me the use of these three now, but only as a courtesy and I would not be able to do this deal in the future or multiple times again. I know the look on my face wasn’t nice but I nicely said thank you, and explained my experience at the other stores. The cashier smiled and just replied ” Have a nice day”. I thought- why do I even waste my time and money here for comments like that? ” grant” me my coupon? um… no… I don’t get worked up often over stuff like this… but after seeing the pattern on this post… I have to admit a little frustration.

Wherever I am shopping, I keep all my coupons in my hand and give them to the cashier ONE AT A TIME. That way, I can keep an eye on what the computer is doing with each coupon as we go. Alot of times, this seems to irritate the cashier, but I do it anyway, because I want to know, right then, if the coupon will be honored for the correct value. If not, I will have the cashier take the item off my tab.

This happens to me all the time! The latest experience was with the Bic pens. I had two coupons; one was $1.00 off any two Bic items from the manufacturer and the other was $1.00 off from Target. My purchase total would’ve been $1.98 for both my Bic pen packages. Well one coupon took off $0.65 and the other $0.55. Not even near the $2.00 my coupons were worth. Then I bought a Merona skirt from them with a $2.00 off coupon. I went to exchange it for a different color, same cost though, and when they didn’t the exchange I owed them $2.12. I was like why doesn’t my $2.00 savings transfer. They told me because it was a coupon and it was done with. Then another odd thing was that the skirt I exchanged and the Bic pens were on the same receipt. Once I exchanged the skirt my receipt was “closed” the cashier told me meaning I couldn’t return the pens if I wanted to. I thought that was odd because I did have to pay out of pocket for those pens since they didn’t fully honor the coupons. Such a joke!

    • Jen

That happened with some diapers I exchanged. I had used a Target q on them, and they wanted me to pay the amount of the q on the new package, rather than doing an even exchange. I believe it’s because the Target q actually reduces the selling price of the item, instead of coming off the end of the transaction. If it had been a MQ I would have argued about it, but thankfully I had another copy of the Target Q and ended up even.

  5. Regina Bennett

Yes, I’ve noticed that my total is too high, as to what I calculated, and I know it has to do with what’s happening between the register and the cashier.
I like to shop at Dillons (a Kroger store) because they always fix problems without any fuss or argument at all.

  6. Missy

I think Target has a long history of deceiving customers for their own profit. Even before I started using coupons, there were many, many times that I bought something on sale only to find on my receipt that they had charged me the regular price. If you tell them about it, they just give you the difference but they don’t go into their system and correct it. How many people don’t check their receipts or get home and don’t want to drive back to the store for $.75 or whatever the difference is?
I also think their receipts print in such a confusing manner that it’s often hard to tell if you’re coupons were taken off or not.
I never trust Target. And their customer service is terrible.

  7. Ashley

I worked at Target and I used and continue to use coupons at Target, and here is what I’m thinking: It depends on the cashier. Honestly, it IS the software, it’s outdated at most stores and the hardware I’m personally using still says “IBM” on it and the white parts have turned yellow. If you get a cashier that really doesn’t care whether you save a penny you aren’t going to be happy with your savings, if you get a cashier that empathises with you and understands that the coupon says one thing and it is deducting something different they can fix it. All cashiers have the capability to fix coupons (providing the coupon is for $5 or less, otherwise it requires manager approval). Go to a male cashier, honestly half the time you do they’ll just fix the coupon to get you out of there and move on.

    • Fluffy

      Ashley
That is not the case in all Targets, last night I was checking out at my local target (west coast) and I had brought a coupon from one of Collin’s deals, it was Campbell’s select Harvest soup which was selling for $1.52 at my Target and the coupon was for $1.00 off, well, no matter what the cashier did it would only deduct fifty cents. She deleted my whole order and started again, finally after being there quite a long time she called over the manager to approve it or correct it and the manager just said to ring it through twice, well after all that it still didn’t go through so basically I was ripped off, made to wait a long time and I know the long line of people behind me were frustrated waiting that same length of time. I avoid shopping at Target at all costs
It seems like they should just state they don’t take coupons and save a lot of us the frustration of trying to shop with them.

  8. Lauren

    Hi Couponers,
Here is what I am doing so I can keep shopping at Target while they sort out their register issues.
I count my coupons as well as know the dollar amount of what my total coupon value is before I hit the register. I am only using 10 or less coupons at one time so it’s easier to keep track of. That includes Target and manufacturer’s coupons.
Put any coupons that cover more than one item ( $2 off 3 etc) at the end of the transaction.
Watch the customer screen and see if any coupons ring in as $0.00. If it does, ask the cashier if they see that the amount of the coupon was actually deducted.
I then check my receipt before I leave the register area.
A few times the cashier or a GTL have had to “fix” the system errors. They can simply do a “missed” coupon on the purchase ( don’t ask me how, I have no clue) and give you back cash for the coupon/coupons that are missed. ( At least that is what they have been doing for me)
If I need to shop some more, i will go put my purchase out in the car and go back in again.

  9. M

Hey Collin! I think if there is a way to get the powers that be at target to look at this it would be wonderful! I have had the same problems at target along with rude cashiers who misinterpret coupons! I want target to fix their problems and issue an apology for all of the hassles countless couponers have gone through with their store! We should not have to go to guest service or call corporate just to get the correct amounts deducted and to the right amount! Newspaper coupons should not beep! Valid internet coupons should not beep! They should know that couponers actually spend MORE MONEY than average shoppers (we get more for our stockpilers, but we do spend!) and the average person that prints an internet coupon has an annual family income of 80,0000 plus! We are not stupid and Target is treating us like criminals when we shop there!

  10. Chey

WOW! I don’t know about anyone else, but if I were Target’s coorprate, I would have had this fixed ASAP! Esp. in the economy today! That could be the one thing that takes them out of business. When you have enough people unhappy with them, for couponing fraud and those people no longer shop at Target, I’d be scared for my company going out of business! Guess coorprate lacks that common sense skill needed to run a huge business! Hope they figure something out soon! And a lot of the time it’s not the cashiers fault, but it’s coorprate… hmmm… maybe there’s something with that little bit that they make… Possibly coorprate is stealing from their consumers? Sounds pretty funny to me… Thanks for the heads up! I’ll have to do the idea of handing one coupon at a time kind of how you have to do things with a 3 year old… -.-

  11. M

I am actually emailing Target corporate this link and pleading for someone with authority to read it! Please do the same and maybe someone will! I said in my email that I would LOVE to shop more at Target to take advantage of their amazing deals but I can’t because I never know when my coupons will go through or when I’ll be treated like a criminal!

  12. Natty

All of Target’s coupon issues is why I don’t do any major shopping there anymore. I’ll still go if I just need to pick up one or two things, or to check out their holiday stuff or dollar bins, but for my main grocery shopping every week, I go elsewhere. I just got fed up. I’ve e-mailed them twice and they never did anything. The best way to fix the problem is to just shop somewhere else. However, I think there are too many people who don’t use coupons enough to care, so Target won’t even notice if a few customers stop going. It makes me feel better to not have to deal with them, and that’s enough for me.

  13. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i argued with a cashier over .11 cents because my 2.50 off 3 huggies baby wipes coupons only took off 2.39 the cost of one babywipe package. I stood my ground and made her read the coupon over and over. She still wasn’t going to give it to me, and I told her I realize it’s only 11 cents but Im’ so tired of being over charged at Target, and it is comparable to theft because Target will be reimbursed the full 2.50 which seems like coupon fraud to me.

    • Janet

It IS coupon fraud, and I am wondering whether Target even has to claim this overrage as income, i.e., the difference between what they give us for a coupon and the face value of the coupon which Target receives in full from the manufacturer? Are they even required to reconcile that difference?
5 cents here and 50 cents there can easily add up to millions of dollars a year for Target Corp.

  14. Missy

Here’s a link from 2008 when Target had to pay $1.7 million for overcharging shoppers in CA.

    https://cbs5.com/local/target.scanner.overcharges.2.846393.html

One of the news programs (20/20, Dateline) once did a story on stores that overcharge customers and Target was one of the worst offenders. Unfortunately, I can’t find a link to that one.

This is an ongoing issue with Target.

  15. LizzieW

I’ve been to Target more than once when I noticed that not all my coupons appeared on my receipt. I just thought it was user error on the part of the cashier. I thought they had just missed one of my coupons (more than once!). I was already out of the store when I noticed, so I didn’t say anything, but it really irritated me the second time it happened. I thought I was nuts. So thanks for posting this. It makes me feel a lot less crazy to know that they probably scanned them all, and their system didn’t take one of my coupons.

  16. Kimi

Holy cow, I had no idea so many other people had this problem!! I tried to do a deal a few months ago with a coupon that said you could get $5 off a Toy Story 3 toy (which were on sale for $5 that week!) when you bought three boxes of Kellogg’s cereal. I also had a coupon for the actual cereal, so although it wasn’t a great deal (something like $1.25 per box still) my kids were totally excited about the toys.

Now, if they hadn’t put through my cereal coupons on top of the toy coupon, I would have understood. But they scanned them just fine and it all went through, I thought, But when I checked my receipt, there was one mfr coupon for $3.50 and another for something like $2.00. I went back to customer service (I don’t like Toy Story toys OR cereal all that much!) and we tried to do the transaction again. It continued to adjust the coupon! On top of that, CS would NOT take my cereal coupons, and once we went through it all it came out to me owing THEM money. This was half an hour later and my kids were hungry and cranky, so the CS lady just gave me my original receipt and we left it as it had been (no way was I putting the boys through all that and then taking away their toys). It was frustrating beyond belief, but I assumed it was the coupon. I can’t believe this! I hope Target does something before they start losing all of their couponing customers!

  17. Krystal

Hey, is there anyone in the Gainesville, FL area who has had this problem with our local Target? If so, my boyfriend is in a reporting class at UF and is writing a story for the course (and to submit to the Alligator to potentially be published). If anyone is interested in being interviewed, please email me at knelson2500@gmail.com to set up a phone interview today.

    Thanks!
    Krystal

  18. chrissy

This has happened many times to me also….Wow, ya know I thought maybe I had read the coupons wrong or that it was taken off and the receipt just wasn’t presented clearly or that the cashier didn’t know what they were doing accidentally but wow, I should have known it was a bigger deal than that. Sux because I love my Target here in Easton ,MD and go all the time with tons of coupons.

  19. Anne

I figured out months ago that if you used coupons on a deal where you are supposed to get a gift card or some other savings, it prints your coupons on the receipt…..But do the math – they don’t deduct the coupons. Even if you notice your coupon on the receipt, you might want to check your math. I have been very cautious and limiting my deals in one day and deciding if my patience is worth it! Walmart is worse in my opinion so I am a little stuck – But I LOVE CVS!!

  20. Kristine

I ran into the same issue as well…I had over $10 worth of coupons that did not come off my total. I went home, went thru everything and realized it! I went back to the store within a few minutes and had them pull the cash drawer and go thru everything. Sure enough, the coupons were there but they said when the cashier scanned them, they must have errored. I asked them why they would continue to take the receipts and put them in their drawer but they couldn’t give me an answer. Needless to say, I got my coupons back because they refused to give me the cash and now I carefully watch as I’m cashing out!

  21. IndyMom

YES, YES, YES! This has been happening to me too! I don’t even shop at Target because my Anderson, IN one is soooo extremely rude to me everytime I hand them even a single coupon. A few times I’ve drove to Indianapolis to shop and my coupons for $X.xx off multiples ($2.00/2 shout products) come out to not deducting more then the cost of one item. They’ve done this soooo many times. On top of that, even when they do appear to have taken all the coupons off I still end up being charged more then I had counted. I never use more then 5 total coupons per order becuase I’m afraid it’ll be harder to explain to CS. I always know what my total plus tax is before I go, but somehow my total (even though all coups went through at face value supposedly) always ends up a few dollars higher. I don’t get it and how do you fight this? They are very sneaky and I’ve decided that driving to Indianapolis to shop at a store that scams just isn’t worth it no matter what the “supposed deal” is. My opinion – why pay more at a sneaky rude store when I’ve got my lovely Meijer right down the road! BTW- we shouldn’t take it out on the casheirs, they are doing there jobs probably don’t even recognize whats happening, It’s the Target Corporation doing this.

  22. Gen

A couple weeks ago Publix told me they except Target (competitor) coupons. I was doing all my grocery shopping at Target because of the stacking of store/manu q’s. Now that Publix takes Target coupons (at least the one I shop at does), that is where all my grocery shopping will be. In addition, I’d rather shop there anyway because of their numerous bogo deals they have every week! 🙂

  23. Michael

Hey everyone! I’m a student at the University of Florida studying journalism and am currently working on a short article about the Target in Gainesville, Fl. If anyone in the area would like to be interviewed for the article please e-mail me at ramirezmike2@gmail.com.

In an article from the Ft Worth Examiner dated 8-26-2010 “Target draws unwanted attention in possible coupon fraud”. the problem with coupons not scanning properly is addressed but it also explains why it is not fraud for Target (or any store) to adjust down the amount of the coupon and still receive face value. Here is the link:
    https://www.examiner.com/frugal-family-in-fort-worth/target-draws-unwanted-attention-possible-coupon-fraud
In addition to the coupon problems with Target, I recently had problems with clearance items. I had a cart load of stuff off the Clearance Shelves that rang up “Item Not Found”. It was after thirty minutes and speaking to four different employees that I was told that I could not buy the items. The CS person said that the items were out of the system and would be classified as “salvage” and could not be purchased. I asked her how can you have items on the shelves and just not sell them!!! I emailed Target Corp and got the same response. In the past when something came up Item Not Found, the floor manager would just give me a really good price and I bought the items. I rarely go to Target anymore.

  27. jean

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been dealing with this. I just went in today, and bought 10 of the weight watcher meals and used the $5 for 10 coupon. When the cashier scanned it, it only took off $1.80 instead of the $5.00. The cashier told me I had to go to the service desk to get this fixed. After 5 min., they had to go pull the coupon from the register, they gave me $5. cash for the error.

  28. ynapoli

On a few occassions, I have handed a cashier a stack of coupons and they all seem to go through-no beeps or comments from the cashier. I really should have been watching more closely. I get home and look at the receipt and I’m sure 1 or more coupons did not go through! If there was a problem with the coupon the cashier should at leat say something and hand me my coupon back if it won’t work. One time I stopped at the customer service desk to complain. They were basically telling me that the cashier had a pile of coupons in her drawer and how would they know which ones were mine (based on my word). Luckily, the cashier I went to had just started and only my coupons were in her drawer. We sorted it out and in the end- they owed me $3 !!!

  29. Ann

I’m glad to know I’m not going crazy! The last few times I’ve been to Target i’ve felt like I’m being overcharged but their receipts are so awful I couldn’t tell for sure. It seems like the coupons beep, the cashier pushes a button and moves on so I assume they put the coupon through. Not so I guess. Thanks for the heads up – I’ll try to be even more watchful in the future.

  30. Katie Ellen

I have had a lot of problems using coupons at Target.

Recently, I experienced a manager who came over to my register and proceeded to question every single coupon I was trying to use. The cashier was very nice and was trying to move my transaction along, but the manager questioned everything – like that I actually had a coupon for G2 but was attempting to buy regular Gatorade (like I was a terrorist). Instead of offering to give me the discount anyway OR to go and get me the G2, she just told me point blank they would “NOT accept the coupon”. It was such poor customer service, especially since I am used to buying so much stuff at Publix where they will bend over backwards to satisfy you.

I also recently tried to buy something recently with a (Target) coupon that was the exact value of the item. The cashier (and then manager) said I could not do this because the balance was zero. It was very frustrating – and I do not understand why they put coupons on their website that people cannot even use!

I used to love Target, but, I shop there very infrequently now. Plus, I can go to a lot of stores in my area that will double my coupons and give me no problems at all.

  31. andreasmith

I actually read this post right after my very 1st Target couponing trip. I checked my receipt and sure enough, the register only took off 51 cents for my $1 off produce coupon. The receipt is so unorganized! I will check more closely next time before I Ieave the store!

  32. patti

Well, it just happened AGAIN! I only had three coupons today (and 2 of the 3 did not come off my receipt.) One was the $5.00 off 4 Kraft cheese products. I had to go to customer service blah, blah, blah. I eventually got my $ but what a pain. i truly love my Target, but this has got to get better.

  33. Monica

It has happened to me also…Unfortunately, found out when I got home. They really need to educate their workers and make it a more “coupon friendly” experience. I don’t know why they do this when they have a coupon policy???

  34. Dana

I have had numerous trips where coupons were not taken off properly. I have gone to customer service and told them that a $3 off coupon was not taken off, which was clearly visible on the receipt, and they just gave me $3 cash. But it’s always a really good idea to know what coupons you have on hand and check before you leave the store. I think it’s their registers, most coupons do not go through automatically. It kind of makes Target shopping not so attractive!

  35. couponlover

funny i had a target lead cashier accuse me of fraud just because i had a stack of coupons i was going to use. She said, ‘use of that many coupons constitues fraud’. After some contacts to corporate I know she was talked to and I rec’d a gift card but i think its funny how just seeing ‘paper’ in my hands, she accused me of fraud and yet, they are blantenly committing fraud with the coupons every day now. They KNOW the coupons are not ringing for full value and have know for months but yet they are not having their employee’s manually enter coupons to avoid ‘committing fraud’. I just stay as far away from Target as possible now. I would rather shop Rite Aid or CVS any day!

  36. Tiffany

Oh yes I have! I had the cashier ring the coupons through again because my total wasn’t what I figured before going to the register. There were three or four that he “scanned” but they didn’t beep indicating he’d scanned it. Then, I used a buy a razor get Olay body wash free coupon. The stupid register took of $1.00 from the $6+ body wash. I took the receipt and a duplicate coupon in, then fixed it, but had I not noticed they would have given me a $1.00 discount and turned the coupon in for more than that. I’m starting to wonder how many times I’ve gone in there with 20 coupons and paid too much!

  37. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

we (in scottsboro, AL) are having a great deal of issues similar to this issue with Walmart. So much of us around here coupon. We all have to go to Huntsville to do our shopping. For me thats an hour away, a guarantee twenty dollars in gas from my savings from couponing!!! I wish we were having a petition for walmart to straiten out their coupon policies. The rules change every time you check out. It doesn’t matter at our Walmart if you talk to management or different cashiers. They just make up things as they go and it doesn’t make any sense…..

  38. mouni

Dana, i had the same happened to me today . They didn’t take my 3$ Neutrogena coupon off . So I went to customer service and they gave me 3 $ cash. I’m happy with the way it was resolved and Target is usually great with coupons but I hope this gets fixed soon because i don’t like to beg for my coupons . Especially that this is not a once in while thing. It’s becoming a real problem for a lot of other couponers.

  39. casey

NOTE: To ensure i am not getting ripped off at stores I always keep a handy dandy notebook with me right in my coupon binder and right everything down as i go.. it helps me keep track of how much I am spending and also how much I should of spent at the end of the transaction.. and also to keep track of the coupons i have used so i can monitor if any were not put through correctly.. it is a hassle sometimes but so worth it!!

  40. casey

and btw… some coupons at target that have been for 1.00 go down to 0 after the next coupon is scanned… wierd.. and it takes them forever to fix it

  41. CarrieB

I am sooo glad that this has been brought up. The last FOUR times I went to Target I had problems with the coupons not showing up on my receipt. The first time it happened I noticed when I had already left the store. I checked my receipt and found that my Greenworks laundry detergent rang up incorrectly, not the sticker price as indicated in the clearance bin. Then only one of my coupons showed on the receipt (bought 2). I had to go back to Target, stand in line at customer service and explain. It was time consuming, frustrating and a real pain.
I have also noticed that cashiers seem to be reacting funny when their register beeps. I watch now and make sure that they do a manual override and watch the display. I now check my receipts before I leave the store. I am inconvenienced by finding the error and having to stand in another line at the service desk while my groceries melt. I had a manager ring me out, I checked my receipt and noticed errors. She had moved on over to the customer service desk and again I got her. She argued with me and I patiently asked her to show me where she was sure she manually adjusted a coupon. She couIdn’t find it and when I stated that this has happened the last 4 times and I might not be coming back she got defensive. I spend a lot of money at Target, love their selection but now am reconsidering giving them my business. I spend so much time searching for the products that I have a good idea of the deal I should be getting. I guess I need to list or copy all the coupons I plan on using so I have a tally to compare to my receipt. What a hassle.

Ugh. I’ve been so close to never shopping at Target ever again, so many times. 😉 I swear they rip me off. Every.single.time. Every time I get home, check my receipt, and realize I was overcharged, yet again, I want to rip my hair out.

They are also supposed to give $0.05 for every reusable bag you bring. Almost every time I’ll have 4 or 5 reusable bags and they’ll only give me a $0.05 credit. Grrrrr.

And advertised deals often ring up wrong as well. Stupid Target. You suck.

today i watched my coupons and they all went in OK. but the lasty time I used the 1.50 off chef boyardee feeding america coupon and i only got .84 cent soff and that was a great coupon so I am really upset about that but I ddidn’t notice it till days later.

The cashier at Target though was very rude to me and accused me of photocopying my coupons because i had 2 skippy and 2 spagettios coupons! i told her i knew that was illeigial and i did not copy them that you can print 2 per coupon and she rudely said nothing to me and wouldint look at me and just called a manger over by flashing her light. then i told the supervisor she was accusing me of copying my cooupons when i didn’t and he didnt ackonlwedge me either or apologize all he did was ask her if she even tried to put them in yet and she didnt say anything she just entered them in and never apolgiized or said another word to me just gave me my bag. i was so upset and embarassed and angry she’d accuse me off that. i wish i had got the cashiers name but i was too busy defending myself!

From what I’m reading from most of you all, to me your coupons exceed the value of the item so they reduced it see what I copied and pasted from their policy on coupons…

    Target Stores Coupon Policy
When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:
**Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You don’t get the problem. That isn’t it. Go back and re-read the post and comments.

Also I read somewhere where someone returned something and didnt’ get cash back….they can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item (see below).

    Target Stores Coupon Policy

Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping with us, and it’s easy to use them at our stores.

    • Target accepts one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item (unless prohibited)
    • Super Target coupons can be used in any Target store if the store carries the item
    • We gladly accept valid internet coupons

Because of the variety of coupons available to our guests, we do have some guidelines for how coupons can be redeemed at Target.

When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:

    • We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued coupons and manufacturer-issued.
    • We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
    • Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
    • We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
    • We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
    • All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Samantha…you aren’t getting it. For example, lets say bananas are $.56 a pound. You have a $1 off of produce coupon. You buy 3 pounds of bananas for a total of $1.68. With the coupon ($1 off) you should pay $.68. However, Target’s software is adjusting the coupon value down to the cost of 1 pound, $.56. So you don’t get the $1 off as the coupon states. That is wrong.

The same is happening for manufacturer coupons that are $1 off of 2 for example. You buy 2 items that are $.88 each. The software is adjusting the coupon amount off to $.88 instead of $1. Then Target submits the coupon to the manufacture and receives the $1 payment plus $.08 for handling. So in the end, I get $.88 off and Target gets paid $1.08. That is fraud.

        well put.

Collin, I think we need to do a letter writing campaign to Target like you did to Walmart!!!

This has happened to me a few times lately. The Scotch tape deal a few weeks ago adjusted my $1/3 coupon to 50¢. The cashier caught it and fixed it without me saying anything. and last week I had a $1/5 Earth’s Best baby food jars and it rang up at 74¢–very random. The cashier noticed and was puzzled but said she couldn’t do anything about it since it’s all computerized. I was in a hurry and couldn’t go to customer service over a measly 26¢ but this is frustrating!

In the WCCO video, at the end the Target media relations person says we can return to the store with our receipt to get it fixed–how would we ever prove that it rang up wrong since we no longer have the coupons?????

  49. Tina

I have only just started doing the deals at Target. So far I haven’t had any problems like everyone else has had. All of the cashiers so far have been really good about making sure the coupons go through correctly. I really appreciate seeing everyone’s experience. I will make sure to pay close attention each time that I go from now on.

  50. Teka

In addition to the coupons being adusted as mentioned in the WCCO video clip, I have had multiple shopping trips to Target, using Target coupons and they are not reflected on the receipt. They are scanned and will ring up as $0.00 on the screen and when you review the receipt they are not there. I have had to go back to customer service, have them pull my coupons from the lane and then usually they give me the cash that is missing. The last time I was not credited for $8.00 in Target coupons. I now count all my coupons and have a list of the Target coupons I use so I can make a case when I have to head to customer service.
Cashier rudeness at Target seems to be growing…I had 31 coupons on my last trip, picked an empty lane, not one coupon beep and as I was leaving heard the cashier apologize to the people behind me for all the time I took.
