We’ve used our registered card for about a year now and it’s great. We earn free coffee all the time. I add money once a month and just keep my card in my wallet. Anytime I didn’t add money online ahead of time I just have them add the amount my drink will be to my card, pay for it and then use the card right there for that drink. You might as well if you’re a Sbux frequenter. We even reached “gold card” status and get a free drink every 15 now. The one trick is that if you’re ordering multiple drinks it only counts per purchase, so you would need to do them separately, I believe, to get credit for each drink you buy. We LOVE it and don’t know why people don’t just keep a registered card on them at all times even if they only load with the amount of the drink each time they go in and then just use it right then!! Take advantage of FREE coffee!!

    Hi Collin,

I just wanted to say thank you very much for all the hard work that you do. I am a silent but religious follower of hip2save. A friend of mine referred me to your website on my quest on how to maximize the coupons. I checked other sites, but really, seriously, yours is the best!!!

Wishing you the best of 2011, good health to you and your family, and cheers for all the savings!!!! God bless.

  5. Jennifer

    Hi Collin,
I am a HUGE fan of Starbucks and of course I have a registered Starbucks card. In fact, I now have the gold card!! I earn a lot of Starbucks gift cards through Swagbucks!!

  6. Meganβ™₯

I never got a drink on my birthday! πŸ™ I’m signed up, what am I doing wrong?

    • Julie

FYI – The free drink rewards actually come as postcards in the regular mail, not via email or your card itself. I kinda don’t like this method b/c it would be too easy for a postal person to snag one (I know that’s awful to say but….).

And I didn’t realize that if you buy 2 or more drinks in one purchase that you only get credit for one!!! No wonder my stars accumulated more slowly than I thought they should… Guess I’ll be doing separate transactions!

    • Valerie

Make sure that your birthday is correct on your account. You can also call the Starbucks rewards program and they can send one out, at least they did for me when I did not receive the postcard in the mail in my birthday month.

I boycott Starbucks completely.. they give a HUGE amount of weapons to Israel, in which they use to kill Palestinians (in their own homeland). Do some google searches if you don’t believe me.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That is completely inaccurate information. Starbucks rocks!

      • Sam

Wow.. you’re obviously uneducated! Just because you “LOVE” their drinks, it doesn’t make this information inaccurate. Use Google.

        • Anonymous

Sam, I didn’t Google to see if that info is true, but I am also not a fan of Starbucks. It’s too expensive and their coffee ALWAYS has a burnt taste. Dunkin Donuts coffee is where it’s at!

    • Anonymous 2

This internet rumor is based on a spoof letter supposedly written by present CEO Howard Schultz and the subsequent tendencies of people to sensationalize and promote without fact checking.

Howard Schultz could be viewed as Anti-Palestinian (from his personal leanings), but the company does not funnel money to the country for weapons purchases. Their associations with Israel largely address matters of zoning and regulations in order to open new Starbucks locations. This company is publicly traded, and Schultz does not have the overwhelming authority to direct charitable funds based on personal tendencies and in fact Starbucks donates to many, many worthy causes, as can be researched from the annual report.

I don’t really have a soft spot for Starbucks and think their business model is a little stupid, but the arms information is completely inaccurate and is easily debunked by a few minutes responsible research. Indeed, when Starbucks was closing 600 stores, Schultz refused to cut his employees’ health insurance although this line item cost them more than the chain spent on coffee each year. He caught heck from shareholders for just this move, so I’m sure if he were attempting to fund Israeli armies, he would have a shareholder revolt.

      https://counterknowledge.com/2009/01/israel-and-the-starbucks-conspiracy/
numerous other outlets have proven that the information circulating online about starbucks (as well as mcdonald’s and other major corporations) and their purported connection to Israeli weapons are completely false and connected to a satirical letter penned by Andrew Winkler. As a publicly traded company, starbucks must file all donations with the IRS and SEC annually. Howard Schultz, Ceo of starbucks, is Jewish; how he spends his personal wealth is not addressed.

I received a Starbucks GC last year from my bf and registered it. I received my postcard for a free birthday drink with no size exclusions!!! I also love that you get a free drink wyb whole bean coffee AND you can bring the empty bag back in to get another FREE drink! πŸ™‚ It is also nice to save .45 on flavors.

Everytime I go into Starbucks I add $5 (minimum amount) onto my card and buy my drink. I don’t have a Starbucks in my town so I haven’t been able to reach Gold status this year πŸ™ Only 4 drinks away but it resets for me in a coupld days. sigh…

  9. Jenn

I am a total Starbucks addict and earned my Gold card in no time at all! I learned about the one star per transaction clause early on, but also learned you can earn a star on ANY purchase. So if I’m getting a drink and something to eat, I have the barista ring them up in seperate transactions. Once you reach Gold status, I believe you also get 10% off purchases of merchandise. My first year, I didn’t receive the coupon in the mail for my free birthday drink, but when I mentioned it to the barista in my regular Starbucks, they just went ahead an honored it. This year I got my birthday coupon no problem in the mail. I’ve also received a couple of 2 for 1 q’s in the mail periodically. Being able to load the card online is probably my favorite feature because it helps me keep my Starbucks spending in check.

  10. Niki

I have been a Starbucks reward card member for awhile now and find the program to have too many “glitches.” For starters, my local Starbucks would HATE me if I demanded that they ring up our order of four drinks seperately each time. And no cashier is yet to inform me that I could add money to my giftcard right there in the store, they just looked at each other with an unknowing glance when I inquired about what to do because I forgot to add it online myself. It’s always nice when a company offers any incentive, but a company like Starbucks should have a better program in place. I spend enough there a year to single handedly pay for said program and I’m sure many others do as well!

    • Bee

Yes, it is nice to have incentives. Unfortunately, I probably purchase about 6 Starbucks drinks per year. Have always found it too pricey and have yet to be able to go in and sit down as so many people are camped out with their laptops. Always have to use the drive-thru or counter and walk out immediately.

We did purchase the Starbucks to-go tumblers on sale (not for the $30+ they are now selling for!) and a cafe frappe machine. It’s too awesome.:) Never realized how little actual coffee is in one of the drinks until I used the machine. Now I just buy a bag of Starbucks and get lots of drinks from one $6.99 bag (plus the free drink for bringing in the bag).

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yeah, I was wondering if SB baristas would have total meltdowns if you asked them to ring up purchases separately – they used to have complete fits if you ordered a plain coffee and then added half-and-half from the condiment table. I made that mistake once and haven’t been back in over 8 years and I stopped buying their coffee because of how rudely I was treated in their store that day.

      • Laurie

Yeah, I understand how you feel, because I’ve felt like that before at different places, but keep in mind…it’s just one employee giving you attitude. Haven’t we all been fed up with people at some point and not been the best employee? I’m just saying, that’s the emplooyee, not the company. No matter where you go.

  11. Cristyn

Yes! There are HUGE benefits to registering your Starbucks card. I have been earning Starbucks cards through Pampers Gifts to Grow and Swagbucks for the past year and a half, and I always register them. I get free lattes that are a fantastic break for this mother of a two year old, and I have recently purchased enough drinks that I’m at gold level. I’m getting a personalized gold card (which I think is pretty funny) and on my way to an additional free drink. Plus, each time I order, I save money because I’m not charged for syrups, etc. It’s a fantastic program. And I don’t know if this is because I have registered cards or what, but I also receive coupons in the mail every several months for something free. I got a free holiday treat card just before Christmas and something else (sandwich maybe?) a while back. And I pay for none of this because my cards are earned with points from G2G and Swagbucks!

  12. Jeanette

    Links are not working.

  13. KatieBee

I’ve had the Starbucks Reward card since 2007 when I was in their “pilot” program before it launched publicly the next year. I am able to reach gold status each year, though I am not a frequent Starbuck’s customer. I probably receive 4 free drinks and a couple of free treat cards throughout the year. When I get a free drink, I use my gold card and purchase a biscotti to count toward my stars.

Part of my “frugal” life was switching out meeting friends for a meal; instead we meet for coffee. So once every other week I use my card and spend $4 (instead of $12-15 for a meal) and rack up some points as I go.

The card works just like a regular gift card – any employee should be able to re-load it accordingly in-store. If you ever have a problem, ask for the shift manager to handle the issue.

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

If you LOVE this program and have an iPhone, download the “Starbucks My Card” app – it keeps track of your stars and prior transactions, and lets you know how far away you are from reaching the next level/a free drink; it can tell you your new balance of your cards AS SOON as you’ve used it AND you can reload your card from the app – you don’t have to be “that person” holding up the line because you’re reloading your card before you pay.

My favorite part about the app – ALL Starbucks inside Any Target are set up to scan your card via your phone – so if you run in for a quick trip there is no need to freak out if you leave your card at home! It’s the Best!

  15. Lisa

I registered a gc I was given last year, as Sbux is THE ONLY coffee shop on the way to my office (crazy huh), I pick up my and my bosses coffee’s there once or twice a week (we alternate paying). I’ve earned gold status and LOVE getting the free drink periodically for something I was already doing (a couple times a week coffee treats). My DH is going to download the app to his iTouch, so he can use the card too.

  16. Michelle

Incentives are wonderful, but their prices are still WAY too high. I purchase just a few ingredients google a couple recipes, and make my own coffees for a FRACTION of the price.
When I figured what I was spending a year on Starbucks, it was just awful, even with the incentives.

    Here’s a wonderful recipe for coffee punch/iced coffee/frapuccino

Brew 1 pot of VERY, VERY strong coffee
Add 1/2 cup sugar and enough hazelnut creamer to color it (coffee & cream color)
    Chill

    In your punch bowl:

Break up 1/2 gallon vanilla and 1/2 gallon chocolate ice cream
Pour chilled coffee mixture over it
    Cover with canned whipped cream
    Drizzle chocolate syrup over all

This makes a punch bowl full, it’s absolutely fabulous, and even better, take what’s left (if you have any πŸ™‚ ) and put it in the fridge. Pour into a glass and add ice (or frozen coffee cubes) and you have a great iced coffee. Or: blend with ice and top with whipped cream and you’ve got a frapuccino.

    Happy New Year all!!

  17. fuzzymitten

Thanks, Collin. I’ve been a Rewards member for a few years now. They made the program harder, it used to be you got all that stuff just by registering your card online. I guess too many people were getting too much syrup and coffee.

  18. lisa

I am curious, why is everyone posting this now? The program has been around for a long time and I have been enjoying the benefits. In the summer I get iced coffee refills every day πŸ™‚

    • Laurie

Probably because people like me, who frequent Starbucks, HAD NO CLUE they had this program! Gee, thanks a LOT Starbucks! But really my thanks goes to Collin. πŸ™‚

    • CdninAK

And, Starbucks gift cards were probably given/received a couple of days ago!

  21. MARY

I buy my giftcards at Kroger and get cents off gas and then transfer the balances to my starbucks account. Extra savings always helps.

  22. Julie

Hey, I checked my Rewards account online and noticed they added a calendar feature and Rewards “History”. You can now look back and see exactly when you earned rewards.

Turns out I had several days with multiple “Stars” on them indicating 2-3 drink purchases. I’ve rarely EVER gone back to Starbucks more than once in a day, so those had to have been run as multiple drink purchases, and bought in one transaction. So now I’m not sure why certain people aren’t getting credit per drink purchased. Either way, I love the program anyway.

  23. Rachelle

I never pay for Starbucks any other way. Love to get free drink cards in the mail.
