Have you had issues trying to use internet printable coupons at Walmart? I cannot believe the amount of emails I receive from readers on a weekly basis regarding coupon issues at Walmart. From the cashier telling you that Wamart does not accept internet printable coupons to the cashier stating you can only purchase what’s pictured on the coupon and the list goes on…

With that being said, check out the picture below:

Notice anything? 😀

I have only had coupon problems at a local grocery store, rite aid, and walgreens so far and it was both manufacturer and internet coupons where the item worked out to free or better. Walmart has always been excellent about accepting all my coupons and price matching. I do try to go to the same cashier since I have made friends with him over time but if he’s not working and I have to go to someone else, they have always been really nice.

  2. Natalie Callahan

I had one cashier at Walmart say that she didn’t think they would accept a coupon I printed from Smart Source because it didn’t have a bar code at the top left as well as the bottom. She said it was fraudulant. Well, she scanned it and it went through, but she didn’t do that until she lectured me in front of everyone. Oh well, she must of been having a bad day and I wasn’t about to let it ruin mine!

  3. wilson1994

A little off subject here…but will walmart give price adjustments on clearance items? I bought several Christmas items at 50% off and now they are 75% off. Trying to avoid returning and re-buying. Does anyone know?

    • Therese

For Walmart to price match anything it has to be an advertised price, they won’t just take your word for it. They have to see it in ad.

    • Lisa

      Nope. 🙁

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I used to work at walmart and they don’t actually do any price adjustments. It has always been to return and re-ring the item. Again this is something some cashiers might have issues with, but I would do it when I was there (when I was working as a cashier and when I was the CSM). good luck 🙂

  4. Brooke

How about when you pick a cashier that seems like they won’t give you a hard time and then they switch cashiers right before you check out! That’s what happened to me when I had a hard time with my coupons! The cashier was nice, but I so wish they had switched after I left!!

  5. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

What a joke, my friend got yelled out for using P&G coupons she didnt have more then 4 like coupons. she had 4 trial size tide soaps, and 4 $1 off any tide. was told 1 coupon for 2 soaps. which make them .50 instead of free.

    • Brooke

I had a cashier that would not let me use my tide coupons last night, I told her that I ALWAYS use them there(WalMart), and she said OH NO NO NO NO. We can’t give you something that is less than the coupon, that is just ridiculous. I hate that not all cashiers will do the same thing, what should they care, they are the ones getting reimbursed or cut short. I wasnt doing anything illegal.

      • nicole

Same thing happened to me just the other day they said oh we don’t take that coupon…..I always used my tide coupon there before, I guess they changed it ????

  6. Brooke

I have a friend that will not shop at Walmart anymore because she tried using internet coupons, and they called the manager on her and they said they were going to have to take her coupons because they were frauds and it was illegal. What is that? If anyone tries to take my coupons, I might hurt them. 🙂

    • mythreesons1967

Love it…just let somebody try and take my coupons…it wont be pretty

    • CHI

I think Management or Corporate forces cashiers to be very tough on couponers. Cashiers at other stores (Wags, CVS, Rite aid) when in doubt they ask for managers, but at walmart they just flat out refuse to take them.
I think they are afraid of losing their jobs. Remember Walmart it’s ruthless with employees.

I put the blame on Walmart management: poor training, not honoring their own Q policy, and the percieve notion that people using coupons are defrauding them (some people may, but printable Q authenticity is very easy to check).

      • Virg

How? I would like to know 🙂

  7. tereza

my local Walmart ad (nevada) says they will honour printable coupons and competitor coupons. have anyone tried this in walmart, yet?

    • christina

I saw that yesterday in the new ad. But my walmart is horrible with manu coupons, internet coupons and price matching. A simple trip takes way too long, so I stopped shopping there. I hope that they get it together because they are my closest store.

  8. Rebecca J

I tried to use an internet printed coupon but was told that it was a copy!! I even showed them where it was an original with the website address printed at the bottom of the printed page. When I asked for a Manager, she concurred and refused!! Haven’t tried it since but you can bet I will!

  9. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I can’t wait to go to Walmart now that they GLADLY accept coupons, it sure was a pain when they reluctantly accepted coupons.

    • Wendy

      LOL

  10. Jodi DeVore

I love my Walmart. We have a Super Walmart and you can literally get everything there. We live 3 blocks away from it and so I walk their often to just pick up a a few things. Everybody says oh hi there it’s you again you need something again today? And laugh and chit chat. They recognize me and have ongoing conversations with me broke up into 5 minute banter. That makes me sound like I have no life but I love the people there. Every time I say I have so many coupons that is why I take a while they say oh I don’t mind you can save tons with coupons. And ask what sites I go to. Hip2save.com is easy to remember lol. They are like cheerleaders and cheer me on, saying they hope I save a lot on my trip. I had a new girl last time and she had this overwhelmed look on her face when she saw my pile of coupons and this regular cashier I have says oh yeah she is a coupon person she uses a lot of them and laughed lol. She said oh I don’t mind. And I said almost everything I buy I use a coupon with it. She said oh cool.

Anyway, she told me that they aren’t supposed to take smart source coupons. And this other female cashier said what? Smart Source? And she said there is a Hanes smart source coupon going around that is fake, so maybe they aren’t supposed to take that one? She wasn’t sure. I said I print Smart Source coupons that are legit and you know they are because there is a software application that prints it. She said I dunno that is just what they said. I said if they start refusing my Smart Source printable coupons I am going to complain. She said we aren’t supposed to push them through if they don’t scan. Because they might be the fake ones they are getting a lot of recently. And she said honestly she didn’t know much about it. And I said most fake coupons are high valued for stuff you wouldn’t get for free like free such n such and it’s worth like 6-10 dollars. Absolutely unrealistic values off. And my best friend told me to be quiet lol. Because with coupons I can talk all day and night lol.

I always try to make the cashier feel comfortable and not have tension. And to be very laid back. If something isn’t going well I don’t want an overwhelming pressure and stress involved. i think for the most part it has worked. But I do want them to know most things I buy with a coupon I wouldn’t buy full priced. If there is a problem i want them to scan the items and take them off the total.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My Walmart hs beenm awful with the coupons. But with this printed on the receipt. AWESOME! Thank you so much!

  12. Heather

    I hate Wal-Mart. LOL!

    • rachel

Me too. Stopped going when the “coupon gestapo” at my Wal-Mart hassled me with legit manufacturer coupons. You’d think with the All You magazine that they push they would accept the coupons you clip from it? Anyway, I avoid Wal-Mart like the plague because of it.
I go to Walgreens and Kroger now and they really are “happy to accept Internet and manufacturer coupons:)”

      • Allison

I agree–I don’t go to Walmart because there are always about 400 other people in line, but only 4 registers open, no matter what time of day. Just about any other store is quicker and more convenient.

However, with the cashier/ads/coupons thing, it really just depends on who you get. When my vocal team did a food drive, we took thousands of donated dollars to Walmart to buy non perishable food. We literally had about a dozen shopping carts filled that morning. We told the cashier and manager what we were doing ahead of time so they could open a register for us (and we wouldn’t hold customers up). The manager not only told us what products were on sale and would ad-match, but she also voluntarily gave us 10% off all purchases because of what we were doing. Then they helped us carry all the groceries out to our cars.

So, sometimes you get good customer service. Sometimes you don’t. I blame the individual store managers for poor training and inconsistent policy.

The best response when you get bad service, though, is to call the store manager (not the shift manager) and nicely tell them your story. It might affect policy and training down the road.

  13. Vaylene

Here’s a idea. Why don’t these stores have 1 checkout stand dedicated to couponers ONLY. Train your associates heavily on coupon policy’s and there you go! No problems!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Wahooooooooooo! Heck yes!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      What a wonderful idea!!!!!!!!

    • Heather

I LOVE this idea. “Coupon Specialists” at your service!

  14. Patti

Went about 6 mos. ago and got such a hard time with my coupons, swore I’d never go back.

Well, found out they were accepting Walgreen’s/Albertson’s/Kroger’s catalinas plus online coupons………..so I tired again. Now I am a regular. It started out rough, but has gotten better as the cashiers have learned. I have made some awesome purchases. I will say that it helps to go when they are not too busy and I try to keep the transaction simple. Here in Boise they have one checkout with a sign that says “Coupon Specialist”. That helps.

    • CHI

I wish i had a “coupon specialist” here in North GA. Good for you.

    • Emily

Now that is awesome. If my walmart had a “coupon specialist” I might try shopping there again.

    • fairy dust

They really should have a Coupon Specialist checkout aisle in every Walmart (actually in every store that takes coupons… but I know for smaller stores that would be difficult).

  15. NolaGirl

I’ve never had a problem. All I usually get is “Wow, you saved a lot!”

  16. RML

WOW! First thing that caught my eye was this person bought THIRTEEN items for $3.47!!! That’s around 0.27 an item! Can I go shopping with you?

    • Emily

That’s the first thing I saw, too! What a shopper!

      • JenFish19

I noticed that too. I want to see the whole receipt!!! 🙂

    • Mitchell Wischmann

Lol! If you live in central Minnesota you could definitely go shopping with me! 🙂

Also, I will try to find that receipt and upload it for you to see!

  17. Misty Mc.

Had trouble with a Walmart Neighborhood Market Cashier refusing to accept multiples, so I’ve made it my policy to keep *their* policy in my coupon binder from now on. Link here: https://walmartstores.com/7655.aspx

    • Paul

I also tell everyone to keep a copy with them. Part of the problem is that corporate falls back on the old, “It’s up to the Manager” to get away with not following what their coupon policy says.
      Paul

  18. LaToya

My Walmart is super internet printable friendly…and coupon friendly overall. I think we might be unique because they are going head-to-head with Albertsons and their double coupons and even taking the Albertsons doublers there. They even accept the Walgreens Register Rewards because it says MANUFACTURER’s COUPON. No issues with Walmart here.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

do they take the Walgreens Register Rewards off your total, or do you have to have a certain product in order to use them? For example, if you have a $4 P&G Register Reward, would you have to have a P&G product to use the RR, or could you just use it on anything and have the $4 taken off of your total purchase?

  19. Tracey

If it doesn’t scan easily it is always the same BS at Walmart especially if you are using self checkout. “I need to check this, make sure it isn’t a copy, make sure it isn’t fraud.”

I had a cashier the other day in the self checkout area which was super busy– and I live in a small town so I don’t appreciate loud commentary that makes it seem like I might be doing something wrong. Cashier very loudly to another employee, “She gave me these coupons and they are not scanning– do you think they are copies or fraud– we get a lot of people giving us fake coupons, etc..”

I want to say -OK I don’t need the comments-take my coupon wherever you need to go to ask or check to make sure they are legit which they are and don’t insinuate that I might be doing something wrong.

    • glenarden

      I can relate!

  20. Mitch

Some cashiers act like they own the company the way they think they are protecting the store from us couponers.
I am always glad to see this stuff in writing.
    thanks for that pic!

    • Mitchell Wischmann

      You’re very welcome! 🙂

  21. glenarden

Had a free Excedrin Migraine coupon. My WalMart clerk said they don’t take free item coupons. I asked her to call one of her managers (CSM) and the CSM said no company gives anything away for free. Took same coupon to another WalMart and no problem. There is rarely a time I go to one of our WalMart stores that they don’t screw up my coupons. The other local WalMart does a better job.

  22. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I just refuse to use coupons at walmart. They really suck. I think that if the coupons dont scan they just reject them. I understand that internet coupons are hard to scan do to the printing, but I hate how cashiers dont even try to type them in. I do believe that mgt is responsible for all the confusion at Walmart. We need to do something to fix these issue (like we did for walgreens). =D

  23. Sarah

I have never had a problem with our Walmart and coupons. (I have had some trouble with price matching, but that really depends on the cashier and the time of day that I’m shopping) I did notice that they have started printing that on my reciepts the last time that I was shopping there.

  24. Cassie

WallMart is a real and I don’t shop there any more. They refused my coupons and I went to Target were they were happy to take my coupons. Wallmart sucks big time.

  25. Butch

keep having a hard time at Walmart with the free coupons I get in the mail, they are not printed off the internet but they have a hard time believing me.

  26. Renee

I have never had any problems with using internet printable coupons at any of the Wal-Marts that I have shopped in the Kansas City area. I have found them to be very coupon friendly.

  27. Nicole

If your store will not take free product coupons such as the Excedrin ones that do look a lot like regular printed ones, I would suggest leaving the whole letter/coupon intact for when you go to the store and that may help.

I haven’t had a problem at my Walmart yet, but last week at Target a cashier refused to take both dad’s manufacturer coupon and a target coupon together, saying that they don’t allow stacks anymore and that she could lose her job, sadly a manager was nearby and agreed with her… I was at cs trying to get a raincheck which took 5x as long as it should have so I didn’t feel like going back so we called the next morning and asked about the coupon policy and they said they still allow stacks. I’m so sick of cashiers trying to make up their own policies.

  28. amanda

Eee! I noticed this with my loot from Black Friday!!! I submitted an e-mail a week ago and got a call from the store manager today (while out shopping at Publix— LOL!)

He said they do not accept internet Buy One Get One free coupons… (what? I understand the whole “free” fake counterfeit thing… but conditionary coupons? Good granny!) and cents/dollars off were good.

I cornered them about the overage/adjusting coupon down. He said their cashiers are trained to adjust the coupon. We shall see! Ha!

  29. Robyn

I had terrible issues yesterday with using coupons on Christmas clearance items at Walmart. The cashier told me I couldn’t use the P&G free lotion when you buy olay body wash because I was buying the body wash in a holiday gift set. What? She told me you can’t use a coupon because the gift set is already a special promotion. She scrutinized every single coupon and was determined that I would not get anything for free. Does anyone else wonder if we might start experiencing more coupon hassles from cashiers who watched Extreme Couponing? You would think the money we are saving comes right out of their own pocket sometimes!

    • Patti

ok, that’s a scary thought! Getting more trouble at the check out due to extreme couoponing show. ack.

      • Carmen Smith

I wonder that also. I guess I don’t understand the point of that Extreme Couponing show. According to the man (on his own website), they were paid nothing for doing the show. They didn’t teach anyone how to coupon and they just looked like greedy people.

  30. Steph

I don’t believe it at all! I have SOOO much trouble w/Wal-Mart!
Only one coupon per item unless I loop around and make 50 transactions. And if the internet coupon doesn’t scan, they just say, “oh well.” UGH!
But, what do they care? THey are advertising that they even accept coupons like the other stores do!

  31. Ann

i saw that on the bottom of my receipt yesterday too. but ain’t too optimistic about it. my walmart looks at me like an alien when i just use one or 2 manufacturers coupons from the sunday newspaper (which i actually buy from them). so i think i’ll still take my internet coupons and majority of my coupons to my target and rite aid that excepts them with no hassles. whatever it takes to save my sanity 😉

  32. Carmen

Has anyone ever taken their complaints directly to Walmart corporate? I know that doesn’t help at the time, but they should know what is going on.

  33. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I haven’t read through the responses, but each store can set what their receipt says, so unless there is a coupon policy that’s printed somewhere, there will still be differences between stores of what they will & will not accept. 🙁

  34. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i don’t think had any problems using an internet coupon, if there was a problem i think they would override the coupon. the cashier one time told me i could only use 1 coupon per item when i had 2 items and 2 coupons together. i usually get something else to cover the cost of the item. i think if you don’t get anything else to coverage the cost of that item they would deduct the sales tax 🙂

  35. JoBeth

I agree, excuse my language, but that is bs. Walmart does not gladly except ANY coupons. I was in there just the other day, and had about 6 coupons, only one per item. The cashier was giving me sooo much attitude strictly because I had so many, and the computer was not letting her scan them because “only three coupons are allowed per transaction”. Is that the most absurd thing you’ve heard? Three coupons per transaction???? Although she gave me much attitude, I didn’t give her any, and she ended up manually taking all of them, and I still thanked her many times anyway, when I still felt she didn’t deserve it.

  36. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

just yesterday i had issues of not accept a manufactureer oupon bc it wasnt the picture.. and i kept saying read the print and you will see and she refused and laughed in face followed by your just another couponer

  37. Amy

I used to love shopping at Walmart…but now..no more. I rather shop at Target, Riteaid, Walgreen. They are more internet coupon friendly. I think it really got to me was this one time I really needed dry cat food. I had some internet coupons and was very excited to use them(that when I learned you can print coupons online 🙂 Ready to check out..and the cashier look at me..and like..”uh..these looks fraudalent”..let me call the manager and see if she accept them. I felt embarrassed…they make us look like criminals. The cashier came back and say “we don’t accept them”.After this incident, I hardly shop at Walmart.

  38. Rhonda

I had a problem on Dec. 26th using internet coupons at Walmart. I was told that Walmart was no longer accepting internet coupons. I wrote coporate and this was their response. And, the store manager contacted me regarding the issue and I so happened to be getting my daughter’s pictures taken and he came to see me personally. We visited a little bit, the manager told me to hang on and when he returned he presented me with a $25 gift card to Walmart and told me if I ever had problems again using coupons to have his people contact him directly! Wow, it pays to speak out! Here is what Corporate Walmart says about internet coupons:

    Thank you for your message.

    Dear Rhonda,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your inquiry. Walmart Stores can accept coupons that are available on the internet for customers to print from their home computers. The following are guidelines for the stores for accepting internet coupons:

    – The coupon should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon”. There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer, to ensure the coupon can be processed for payment.
    – The coupon should have a scan-able bar code.
    – The coupon should have an expiration date.
    – The coupon cannot be a photocopy.
    – The limit is one coupon per item, per Customer.
    – A Salaried Manager can refuse to accept a coupon if it does not meet any or all of these guidelines.

    Sincerely,
    Walmart Customer Care

  39. Laura

How many coupons are you trying to use at once at walmart?
i never had(knock on wood) any trouble i give them at the end and they never klook to see if its what i bought

  40. Bee

I had an issue in early 2010 with the Scrabble game coupon and the older lady cashier telling me before even scanning the coupon that I was not allowed to use it on that item. I said, “Oh, that’s funny, I just used the same one at Target (Target only had one).” She would not even attempt the transaction. I was about to leave and then decided to hunt down a CSM. I found one and she kindly took the coupon and went to the cash office to check and apparently they told her if it scans, to take it. She took awhile to come back and then tried to give my coupon to another customer, a lady who looked to be about 15 years older than me and weighing about 40 more pounds. I am going on 40 and people tell me constantly I could pass for at least 10 years younger. The CSM said “You all look just alike.” The older lady told the CSM to get some glasses. It was all very funny, but I think she was trying to make me “pay” for bothering her with a coupon issue. In the end, I got what I wanted and went back to the original cashier and made her take the coupon. The thing about older cashiers (I have seen it again and again and again), if you are the least bit younger than they are, they start pulling the superiority attitude (sorry if you are an older cashier and you don’t do this). But I have been out with my 16 year old daughter who is VERY polite to people when she goes in stores, and some of the older cashiers treat her like she doesn’t have the right to spend money and exist in the same world they do.

Which is why I almost exclusively go to young male cashiers, even as old as I am. I don’t act like I’m their mother, and they don’t give me some heck about a coupon.

  41. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My daughter and I went shopping at Walmart on Thursday. She had 2 identical Coffeemate coupons. One scanned, one wouldn’t. They refused to take the one that wouldn’t scan and said they were not allowed to over-ride it. I had a ICBINB coupon and an Afrin coupon that wouldn’t scan. Since they refused to take those coupons, we both refused to buy those items there and made them take them off our totals.

When my cashier started trying to scan my coupons, none of them would scan. She hesitated and started giving me “that look” so I told her it must be her scanner. She then switched to the handheld one and it worked just fine except for the few I mentioned above.

  42. Julie

I went to walmart the other day. I had 2 of the free 12 pack coupons from my coke rewards and 4 1.50 off Sunbelt snack things. Anyways, I was trying to be proactive and asked her did she want the free ones prior to scanning the pop since I know they are supposed to write the purchase price on it. She looked over the coupon and said you cant have 2. It says only one coupon per purchase, she then proceeded to tell me how she had to follow coupon rules even though some people dont think they have to follow the rules so she could only take one. I said well I guess that it is a matter of interpretation because I always understood it to mean that 1 coupon per item and as long as I had 2 items, then 2 coupons was OK. She called a manager who backed me, but by then I was already completely embarrassed by being treated like I had just commited murder or something.
Not going to be shopping regularly at Walmart with coupons unless it is a super-good can barely pass it up deal.

  43. kc

i TOTALLY have had those very problems!!!
i have been told “can’t take this coupon because you didn’t buy what the picture is” >>what?? is this picture reading???
also had the “we won’t take printed coupons–they are all fake” told to me.
    i promise~i had legit coupons!!!!
i have been extremely frustrated by walmart….!!!
glad to know i wasn’t the only one! maybe i’ll try it again…. fingers crossed!!!???!!!!

  44. Erin

Does anyone have problems with the cashier refusing to price adjust a coupon? We went yesterday for a product that was .94 cents and used a 1$ coupon on it and of course there was a stand off with the cashier. She said repeatedly that they cannot owe us money, in which we responded with we don’t want your money, just adjust it down. I was ready to give up but my husband enjoyed the battle and eventually three managers later, won.Just wondering what to do if they don’t understand how to adjust the coupong

  45. Shawna

I noticed that on my recent receipts but I have definitely had problems at Walmart with coupons. The one closest to me cannot seem to understand the “one per purchase” phrase (I really wish the manufacturers would put “one coupon per product” to help these confused cashiers/managers) and then mysteriously one day, they told me they do not accept internet printed coupons. I questioned them since I had just used one a couple of days before and she claimed that it was always the policy and that any cashier accepting them would get in trouble. I told her to void the items and give me my coupons back. Every time I go in this Walmart, I am prepared for drama. Thursday, I tried to use a coupon on a Stetson gift set and the cashier was about to hyperventilate b/c the coupon was a few cents over the item price. I ended up getting loud with her and told her to void the item and give me my coupon back. I am not one to argue but enough is enough! Another Walmart still accepts my internet coupons but I am always prepared to hear some new rule that occurred overnight LOL!

  46. dwagnfly

I’m impressed with the 13 items being purchased for only $3.47!

    • Mitchell Wischmann

I’m going to try and post a link to the full receipt so you can see what I bought! 🙂

  47. Melissa

I keep a print out of Wal-Marts corporate coupon policy with my coupons. Any issues and I’m pulling it out. Hopefully the cashier can read. Had issues with a few that had difficulties with the English Language.

  48. Dorothy Dudelston

Our local WalMart will NOT accept any coupon if it has the words Del Rio, Texas on it. Period! Unfair also.

    • Wendy

This really confuses me. Have they ever attempted to explain why?

  49. Tracie

I like my walmart it is two years old and has verry nice and well informed cashiers and customer service. i havent so far had any problems with them about my coupons, two days ago i used a internet printed b1gf coupon. i think it depends on the store and the training. which is very sad.

  50. Susan

I quit buying movies from there. I recently moved and sadly, if I don’t want to travel more than half an hour away, I’m stuck getting my movies at Wal-Mart. They take about 10-15 minutes to “verify” that my Disney $10 off Bluray Combo Pack coupons are legit. I called corporate and have complained after the second and third time it happened. Nothing has changed sadly. I try to use ANY internet printable coupon there and I have to either assure the cashier its legit and wait 15 minutes, or I just tell them to take the items off.
I love that amazon has great prices on diapers. Wal-Mart here has seriously lost about $100+/month from me because I won’t shop for any movies/diapers/toys there now.
