Walmart: New Deals + Coupon Policy Talk

As you may know, Walmart has updated their corporate coupon policy in a big way! They have stated a few things which really took me by surprise and I’m guessing surprised lots of you, too! They now reportedly will apply coupon overage to other items in your cart, “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”

This coupon policy sounds pretty awesome, right?! Well, on a not so positive note, I have heard from many of you who have encountered various problems trying to use coupons that exceed the price of the item. All I can say at this point is to take a deep breath, be respectful and try to educate the cashier in the nicest way possible. Make sure to print the Walmart corporate coupon policy and keep it with you at all times. When an issue arises, show the cashier the coupon policy. If they still don’t want to follow it, ask for a manager. If the manager doesn’t want to follow it, contact corporate. To me it seems pointless to have a corporate coupon policy available online, if store managers and cashiers are not willing to follow it.

With all the being said, I would love to hear how interested you would be in seeing a more extensive Walmart deals list here on Hip2Save. I tried to do this before, but because prices vary so much by location, I felt it wasn’t really worth it and I didn’t want you all to leave your local Walmart frustrated that you weren’t able to get some of the deals that I had posted.

I would love Wal-Mart deals posted. Wal-Mart is the closets big store to me so I do most of my grocery and household shopping there. I have been having a terrible time getting them to take my Target coupons but they usually give in once I explain it to them a few times and start to hold up the line! I hope they start to educate their cashiers and even the customer service reps better as often times they don’t even know the coupon policy.

  2. Amber

Hey Collin, I think Walmart’s new coupon policy is great!! I am blessed to live in a town with CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Food Lion, Lowe’s Food, etc and Walmart. I sadly do not have a Target within 30 miles of me, so I would appreciate the Walmart matchups. I went yesterday to buy the Purex sheets (with the anxiety you talked about in that hilarious post), but much to my suprise didn’t have ANY problems…and I bought 10! The cashier did have to verify that the coupon was $3 on each coupon which I thought my annoy her, but she just smiled and said, “WOW…great deal!” Thanks for all you do and now tha Walmart is trying to actually compete with other stores on their coupon policy I might be shopping there more. PS. I got $50 worth of groceries for $11 because of the overage!! 🙂

  3. Mitchell Wischmann

My Walmart is usually absolutely horrible with coupons, but to my surprise, they took my Register Rewards from Walgreens without a word! I was so shocked!

  4. DP

I would love a Walmart section. I rarely shopped at Walmart, but am going to start. For all the people that may claim the prices are different,t hey should already know that, you gave us a heads up!

  5. Clenece

I would love to see more walmart deals posted! I too live in a small town and do all my shopping at walmart!!!

  6. CHI

I would love for you to post deals.

Im happy to report that my small town WM takes Walgreens RR(north GA). The cashier was hesitant, but very polite. She asked me if i could wait until a Manager could come over and approve it, because she hadn’t heard about the new policy change, i said yes. The manager saw the RR and told her, take them as long as the Q states that it’s a Manufacturer Q. (before the policy change, different manager at same store would not let me use RR)

My cashier didn’t scan any of my RR (had two for $5) or my manufacturer Q, she just keyed them in.

WM was the reason i started to use Q in the first place. I remeber that at the height of the recessiong their Great Value was within cents of the brand name items, so i just started gathering Q for brand names and then i discovered this blog. Now, their pharmacy Great Values are considerably cheaper. I usually buy them when i run out and need the OTC drugs ASAP. A better value now, since i can use RR.

  7. Michelle

Collin, GREAT post! I shop at my local Walmart here in SC at least twice a week. It is close to my house and I feel it is cheaper than Food Lion and Piggy Wiggly. I am so happy to hear about the new policy. I cant wait to try it out! I would LOVE more Walmart post.

  8. Kristen Hales

I would love to see the WalMart deals again! Even if the pricing isn’t right on, it’s still usually close enough to be a good deal.

  9. zoe

i can’t get the huggies pull up wipes coupon to print. anyone?

  10. Michelle

I would like to see Walmart deals also! We should all understand prices vary by location. If we notice varied prices we can comment and let everyone know to help eachother out. That is why I love this site, I notice a lot of people do this already. It also just gives me an idea of what deals I can get and what coupons are out there. I am a full time working mom of two, so I really rely on this site a lot for help. I have been told about other sites, but I just don’t think they compare. Thanks

  11. tlambeth77

Collin, Please, Please, Please start a section about Walmart. I do 99% of my shopping at Walmart unless I am specifically going somewhere else to get a deal. Even if prices do vary regionally at Walmart, your posts would still be very helpful! Thanks for the update on their coupon policy. You Rock!!

  12. Jamie

I was suprised when I went to Walmart the other day and had NO problems with getting overage (specifically on the Gain fabric softener sheets $1.87 with $3 mfc and Wardley Fish Food $1.42 with $2 mfc on coupons.com) the cashier was very nice. I would love to see regular match-ups on this site!

  13. Heather

Would definitely love to see Walmart deals! I use your site and my weekly ads to plan my shopping trips each week, so this would be great. Thanks, Collin, for always striving to improve and to find even more ways to help us!!

  14. Kavi

Even though I don’t shop Walmart as much as other stores, I would still appreciate and like to see the match-ups and deals. It is very helpful in many ways to lot of people deciding to shop when and where. I also think lot of readers don’t shop at walgreens or don’t have Target around them. So Walmart match-ups is a must I should say.

Walmart is the closet than any other store to me. But I haven’t shopped as much as I do @ other stores. But I do go there, if I can get a good deal with out a hassel. I have got overage with Gain coupons. But one thing I hate is that, Walmart pulls out and clear the shelf if an item is free or close to free with Qs. I have so many Purex Qs, but not one travel size I could find.

Last time I was there and used my Gain Qs, there was issue. But I politely explain their coupon policy and the cashier said she couldn’t approve with out manager. I was okayw ith it and the manager(young guy, obviously) read the coupon line by line and said it was okay. But he was not sure about RR’s. I know I had my coupon with me, but just couldn’t find it at that point. So I just paid and let others shop. But went to him and showed the coupon policy before heading out the store. He read that policy over and over again with RR’s on his other hand. But finally said that I can sure use them. I asked him to sign the policy I had, so that if at all I have problem, I don’t want a long line standing behind me and show the signed policy to the cashier!!! I thanked him and said that I’m very excited with their new coupon policy and if they are gonna honor their policy, I would definitely shop there more often.

I shop walgreens only if there’s a really unbeatable price for items I need or a big MM. Now I’m relaxed and not to worry about RRs expiring.

  15. bliss

My local Wallmart is great. I was there a couple of weeks ago. I was able to use $ 3.00 off Gain Sheets coupons for boxes priced $1.87. + used Walgreens RRs. I used overage and RRs to pay for $3.00 Carters’s fleece PJs (on sale/reg. $7.00) VERY GOOD QUALITY. I also got Garanimals sweat shirts and sweat pants priced $1.00 each. Nothing beats prices like that. I had no problems at all using RRs.

I did have a problem with one Walmart once. The managet told me I couldn’t use my $1.00 off coupon for $0.97 Tide. I wasn’t in a mood to educate them so I politely refised from entire purchase and said I would shop where workers know what to do with coupons. I do not go there any more.

I would love to see more Wallmart deals just to be aware of them. I think everybody can make a choice if they want to shop at Wallmart or not but it won’t hurt anybody to know about great deals. Thank you!!!

  16. cara

I really dislike Walmart and go out of my way to avoid it. However, I think others on your site would enjoy it. I would LOVE to see Meijer matchups as they have tons of hot deals each week but I understand you don’t have one in your area. Thus, I go to Bargainstobounty.com to get the Meijer matchups and I do like how her store matchup concepts are color coded to tell you if it’s a good price, free, or grab all your coupons it’s stop up time! Again, thanks for all you do. My at first reluctant husband used to roll his eyes when I pulled out my coupons and now he goes through my grocery bags and asks what I got for free today! He even wants to do the U scan at Meijer to scan the coupons now!

  17. Cathy

    Collin,
I hate to be a “Debbie Downer”, but I have mixed feelings about the new policy. I think it is great about the new poilcy, buit I have been reading various blogs and I think some people are abusing the new policy and feel that it is going to make it rough on the rest of us in the long run. I am really sorry that I feel this way, because I’m all about finding great deals and feel that some people are taking it to the extreme. Please let me know if what I am feeling is wrong. Thank you again for all the work you put into this, to help people like me.

    • DP

Abusing the policy in what way?

    • Jessica

I agree…there are people that are definitely using this to its fullest extent, and I think it will hurt all of us in the long run. The printable coupons are an example…with the amount of fraud and overprinting, we have stores that now refuse to accept printable coupons. It was a good idea, but some abused it. The Wal-Mart policy is a great idea, but I think some will abuse it and we may see it go away very soon. I personally think it’s wrong to expect an overage to produce cash back, especially if it’s a register reward for another store. I think you should apply that overage to other items in the store, take home more for your money…not just the cash. In regards to match-ups for Wal-Mart, I follow a few other blogs that do match-ups for Wal-Mart and the prices are never the same as where I live.

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I would be intersted in a Walmart matchup. I’m not sure if it would increase my Walmart use, as my local Walmart (Super) is rather frustrating to use coupons at. I try to go once a month for my ‘big’ shopping trip.

On a side note, and I hope I don’t get rung thru the ringer with this comment… but I disagree on the use of Register Rewards from Walgreens being used at Walmart. Maybe because I am in a smaller town than most, and can see the use of RR going to Walmart rather than Walgreens, hurt our local Walgreens. But, Walgreens issues the RR’s, counting on their customers turning around and spending the RR back to Walgreens. If that stops, or the use goes down considerably, than there is a possibility that Walgreens will discontinue their RR use later down the road.

I guess it just boils down to customers still supporting their Walgreens and use the majority of their RR’s they can, to keep Walgreens going and want to continue the RR promotion. I would hate to see Walmart take down yet another store like they have in the past (the smaller ‘ma and pop’ stores).

    • Melissa S

I agree with Allison on the use of RR at Walmart. I am all for as much competition as is possible. That is what keeps prices down. If Walgreens goes out of business, then there is less incentive for Walmart to keep their prices low. Regarding the grocery prices at Walmart, I don’t find them to be very low at all in my area unless I price-match with other stores’ sales. Meanwhile, most of the people shopping at Walmart for groceries just assume they are getting good prices when they are not. I am not a Walmart hater. I shop there, but I do have misgivings about their latest policy change.

  19. Laine

Another deal to think about: Walmart has travel size Pert Plus 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner for .97. I think it was a Smart Source coupon and expiration 3/31 if I’m not mistaken is out for $1. Small overage and a free item!

  20. Becky

I had a horrible experience the other night at my local walmart in Northern IL. I was so upset…I left everything at the checkstand and walked out….I did NOT shout or get angry at them…I politely asked for my coupons and policy back and left the store w/out buying anything. 3 people including the manager would NOT allow me to receive the overage on the trial size purex sheets. I have reported this to corporate but this really upsets me as I ordered the q’s off of ebay so now i am out the money and the deal. On top of it all my hubby is out of work and w/me working part time and his unemployment it is NOT enough to cover my budget w/a small child. I think many people think that all couponers are wealthy or just doing the deals for fun but I’m doing them because I have to. Thanks for reading my rant!

    • Kelly t

Contact corporate, then go back after they tell you what to do, I am sure they will sort it out.

    • amy robbins

Sorry to hear that. Is there another WalMart close by? They usually have one every 30 miles or so. You might have better luck there. Plus, since they expire the 19th, why not try again at that same WalMart? Try checking out with a younger male checker. Odds are if you go a different time of day than before, there will be a different CSM and Assistant Manager. Don’t give up!! I went to our WalMart and before using those same coupons, my basket total was $112 & some change. After couons—-get ready for this—THEY PAID ME $1.31!!!! One big score makes it worth it all.

    • M

Sorry, you’re having a hard time. Every time I tried to use my coupons for free items I had to go through a hard time. Each cashier would flip out on me.
I asked to speak with manager and the cashier says, “YOU DARN RIGHT I’LL GET THE MANAGER!!”
She wouldn’t even look at the corporate policy and just shook her head no.
The CSM also said no, but I insisted they actually read the policy and get me the MANAGER.
The manager has o.k’d it each time, but I have to go through the same process every singe time!
I also contacted corporate, which lead no where. I get a different reply depending on who I talk to.

The email I got a few days ago from someone at corporate says the coupon will be adjusted down and that the manager can refuse to take any coupons. If the people at Corporate can’t get it straight, it’ll be a long time before the cashiers figure it out.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the matchups that you provide for Walgreens and would really appreciate a WalMart section. We live about 30 min from our WalMart, Target, and Walgreens. I used to grocery shop one time a month and hit all these places in one day–took me about 4 hours on the low end. We are a family of 7 and I usually spend $500 a month in groceries, cleaning, laundry products, and OTC – HBA items. I am currently running an experiment in which I will shop once a week using the great coupons I get here and the matchups you provide. So far it’s going great! I have used groups of 10-20 $3 purex coupons on the travel size and have had no problem getting the overage @ Wal-Mart. I then am able to put that overage towards that week’s grocery bill. And with a kid away at college, he gets the purex!! Thanks for all the hard work, time and effort you put into updating this site. I am telling EVERYONE about it!!

  22. Tiffany

The walmart deals get me excited and then I go to my store and the item is twice as much. I live in a small town with two grocery stores and a CVS so they really raise prices when compared to walmarts in other town. It is just frustrating.

  23. Dawn

Funny. I just printed their policy yesterday to update the one I had in my binder and it has changed today.

  24. Amber M

I shop at walmart the most, I would LOVE to see more of their matchups!!!

  25. Shawna

YES YES YES!!! – Please Post Walmart Deals! 🙂

  26. Sarah

Thanks Collin! Walmart is not my fave with coupons but they are the closest. A couple of deals that get me in the door:

Rayovac batteries .97 there is $1 off on facebook (not a great battery but with every kids toy needing one…)

Idahoan potato packs .42 each Smartsource has/had a $1 off three making them 8 cents each. This coupon has come around periodically so I’m sure you’ll come across one eventually.:)

  27. Shawna

I WAS JUST IN WALMART LAST NIGHT (Orlando, FL) – I tried to use a Walgreens Register Reward and they would not accept it. I looked at the coupon closer and saw that there was no valid remit address for them to get a refund. Other catalinas will work, but not the Register Reward because of the lack of address.
ALSO, a manager came over to allow my large number of coupons, and explained that they received a memo the day before yesterday about the new coupon policy – they will not accept any coupon printed online that has another store’s logo on it, even if it says “manufacturer coupon.” (Just a heads up in case any of you encounter this issue in the future.)

  28. mary

they would not accept register rewards and a couple of other coupons I continued to check out then headed to the customer service and got my $8 from them in cash. She had to educate her own cashier then said she was going to have a meeting on it.

  29. hollie

It looks like the policy has been tweaked a little bit since last week. Now it says Walmart will accept catalinas “printed at our competitors’ registers for dollar/cents off on a specific item” and not those that are “dollars/cents off the entire basket purchase”. That pretty much means no RRs.

  30. Lindsey

I luckily have never had a problem with Wal Mart! And i love the overage! I have gotten meat, milk, big box of diapers and so much more for free! Its awesome!!! And they will even pay you the overage! The other day my bill was 141$ before coupons and after coupons, they paid me $7.24!!! Getting paid to shop and getting other groceries free is awesome, especially with the gas prices!!!

  31. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Walmart does NOT accept Walgreen’s RR, and it states so in their coupon policy.
Walmart does not accept the following coupons:

    * Checkout coupons
o Dollars/cents off the entire basket purchase
    Also about the catalina part:
Must have a valid remit address for the manufacturer
    Walgreens RR do NOT!

  32. Rhonda

I used coupons the other day that exceeded the amount of the product. I did have some other items in my basket to cover the overage. The cashier DID NOT want to give me the face value of the coupon. I stated to her the new coupon policy (did not have it with me ):). She got a CSM who had stated this is the second time this week that she had heard about it. The previous customer did have her policy and they went ahead and gave her the face value of the coupon. Then they went on to state they spent over a hour looking for an e-mail regarding the new policy. I asked them if they searched the website for the new policy and they said “no, we looked for an e-mail”. They went ahead and gave the me the face value of the coupon. I went home to search the website for their coupon policy….took 2 seconds. Those cashiers I guess are only directed by e-mails and don’t know how to look up their own policy. I also contacted corportate via e-mail. Does anyone have corporates # so I can put it in my cell phone?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      call 1800 WALMART

  33. Megan Miller

    About this…
    Maruchan Yakisoba $0.98
Use the $0.50/1 coupon found in the 3/13 SS
    Final cost only $0.48!

They are priced 54 cents at my Walmart, so only 4 cents after coupon 😀

  34. Heidi H

Being in a small town with limited options (and living in the land of no doubles), I would LOVE to see Walmart coupon match ups!!

  35. Barb

I just got back from a trip to Walmart and had to get approval for the overage on the Revlon tools coupon. They would not let me use two coupons (I had 4, from 2 different computers) as they had the same number on them and I was told that they were copies. I explained that you can print only two coupons from the same site, but no go. So I just left with my two coupons. The clerk and the manager were polite, but it was obvious that they did not know about the new policy, which I had with me. Oh, and I did get the overage. If I think I will have a problem with couponing (wherever) I try to go early in the morning when the stores are not crowded. It makes it easier on me that I am not holding someone up and usually the register clerks are not tired and are more willing to take care of a problem.

    • Latasha

even if two are printed from the same site, the barcode under the expiration date should have different numbers. The main barcode at the bottom of the coupon will be the same but the top barcode numbers should be different.

  36. Abigail

Yay!!! Walmart is the main store we shop at (mainly because it’s the cheapest.) The only big stores we have in our area are Walmart, Winn-Dixie, Walgreens, Publix, and CVS. And all of them but CVS are less than a mile away from us! 🙂 (We have Taret, but they’re both more than 20-some minutes away- I figure I’ll just use their coupons at Walmart)
Also, since Walmart takes competitor coupons, I’ve been planning on *trying* to score a great (?) deal on Gillette Men’s Deodorant and Bodywash. When I wrote about my trip to Wags several days ago, at the checkout, the lady gave me two (2) Wags $3/1 Gillette Men’s Deodorant coupon’s. I also have the P&G Band Saver coupon for Buy 1 Gillette Deodorant, Get 1 Gillette Bodywash FREE! According to the online prices, this deodorant is priced around $3.47. So if I use both the Wags store coupon AND the P&G Coupon, that should make for some pretty darn cheap Deodorant and Bodywash! Hopefully only .47 cents or cheaper! =)
I m just a LITTLE confused, though. The P&G Coupon says “LIMIT ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE” I am assuming I can use a store coupon, too? Does that mean that when I use the P&G Cupon, I can use no others to make the deal sweeter? or just one more? HELP! I desperately need it!
    Thanks! 😉

    • Megan Miller

I am pretty sure the walmart policy says only one coupon per item

      • Abigail

I thought about that, too, but their coupon policy CONFUSES me! I mean, it seems like they would accept one coupon + a sotre coupon. Right? Also, it sounds like they keep changing their policy! That’s also confusing me…. ARGH!

  37. minnick629

I live in a small town with not many grocery store options therefore most of my grocery shopping is done at Walmart. I would love it if you posted more Walmart deals! Thanks Collin for all you do!

  38. Annelise

    Collin,
I’d love it if you could post the Walmart deals. I’m so excited about the changes Walmart has made to their policy. I’ve had to educate just about every checker I’ve checked out with since the beginning of the year, but to their credit, they’ve all been great about it. Thanks for all you do!

  39. Angie

I would LOVE to see a Walmart deals list!!!. I don’t have a close discount store such as Ultra or Foods 4 less so I go to Walmart with my price matches and coupons. The Walmart in Joliet, IL is super coupon and price match friendly. They scan the coupons with the overages and enter the price matches without a blink of an eye. I do get a cashier here and there that is a bit more strick then others but otherwise have not had any problems ever. They also except coupons up to 14 days past expiration which I just did yesturday. I asked and was told that this was policy but it is not listed in their policy so it maybe something to ask at your local store. I could really use some coupon help at Walmart and a list would be great!!!!

  40. Rachael

Walmart in Howell Michigan just started doubling $1 coups!! I am heading there right now to see what I can score!

Off topic. Anyone have a $10 amazon code that they would like to trade for a 20% off YJ code. Email me at brittaymae AT gmail.com. Thanks!

Hey Collin! I just wanted to add that if you have the time, I would love to have a weekly updated deal section about walmart here on Hip2Save. I have to go to other sites for Walmart and a few other stores and don’t like to. I wish I could find them all here because YOU and this site are the best! lol

I would LOVE to see more Wal-mart deals! I haven’t run in to any problems using coupons over the $ amount or the catalinas in MO. I have been using all my calatinas at Wal-mart because I feel I can get a lot more for my money I mean catalins$. 🙂

I used a Catalina coupon from Walgreen’s two days ago at the self checkout and it scanned, no problem! I think this is great! Worked well for me.

No thank you to the Walmart deals. Everytime I go to Walmart I have the most frustrating experiences, have to wait in line (always plentiful and competent cashiers at Target), and have issues with coupons. Time would be better spent with family, Collin!

Although I appreciate the Walmart info, you are correct…they prices vary widely so most of the deals don’t work – at least in MN they don’t. I also follow local blogs and have found the same to be true even on them. Consequently I rarely shop there and all the coupon nightmare stories don’t really encourage me to try. Personally, I recognize you only have so many hours in the day and would rather get deals that are likely to work for the majority of people the majority of the time. You have provided my family with so many money saving opportunities and for that I am grateful! Thanks for all you do!!!

BRING ‘EM ON COLLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS NOT THAT FOND OF WALLY WORLD BUT NOW I AM!!!!!!!! SURE I’LL SEE SOME FELLOW HIPSTER’S WITH POLICY IN HAND WHILE SHOPPING:)

I wouldn’t mind a weekly or monthly round-up, maybe with the hottest of the deals. Rollbacks vary, even prices between 2 of the WMs in my area are different. Instead of using precious blog space listing allll the deals, you can do the click here to read the rest of the deals like you do with the drug stores.
    JMHO 😉

Yes! I would love to see walmart scenarios. To me, it’s totally fine about different regional pricing. I live in an area where prices are usually just different from blog posts but it really helps me immensely to have the coupon matchups.

You rock! Have a fabulous weekend!

I would be eternally grateful if you would post Walmart deals!
