Once again, Amazon has this Live Butterfly Garden marked down to ONLY $11.99 (lowest price I’ve seen)! This kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars! Your kiddos will actually be able to watch the metamorphosis from larva to butterfly which takes about three weeks. They can then release the butterflies after a few days of observation!

(Thanks for the heads up on this new lower price, Bucktown Bargains!)

The PERFECT Easter Basket present!!! Bought one for my daughters, and one for my cousin’s daughters to enjoy! They get really great reviews on Amazon too! Used my Swagbuck Amzon certificates to pay for these, so this was REALLY a super deal for me! Thanks Collin!!!

Wow, I never thought of putting this in an Easter basket! You’re right; this would make a perfect springtime gift.

It looks like a lot of fun. I don’t need or want one right now, but I’ll keep this product in mind for future reference. I would like to note that according to Amazon you’ll have to pay an additional $5 fee to order the live caterpillars to go in the habitat.

  3. Melissa

its on insect lore website for 19.99 with the live caterpillars. Not sure about shipping price.

  4. Carl

I bought one of these the last time they had a deal and we are at this very moment waiting for the butterflies to emerge! The whole family enjoyed watching them go through their stages and now can’t wait for them to open and become out with their wings 🙂

I bought one of these at Walmart over the weekend for $14.99 and got home to order the caterpillars and found out I had to pay $5 to get them shipped. But totally worth it to see my day care kids faces when we watch them go through the stages.

I do one of these every year with my kids and it is AWESOME! We have actually seen a butterfly emerge on several occassions. Toys R US almost always has these for $5 around Christmas though. Last year I bought 5, 2 for us and the rest as gifts.

My mom bought my daughter this for her birthday a few years ago, we had no issues with hatching the butterflies. I think the first batch one butterfly did die, but otherwise they were all healthy and we released them. Keep in mind about ordering your catapillars when the weather is warm enough to do so.

Also keep in mind that refill butterflies are not cheap, and once ya get it they will want them all the time;p…but very interesting and fun and a great learning experience.

I’ve been hoping this would go on sale again! We tried to keep a woolly bear caterpillar (named Nick) through the winter but he, uh…didn’t make it. So this will be a perfect Easter gift for my girls! Here’s hoping we have better luck than we did with poor Nick : ) Thanks, Collin, for always posting this deal!

you have to pay a fee for the butterflies – please note.

My husband thinks this is neat and when we spoke about it – I wondered about the setting them free part. I know it is so people wont be upset and think they will die in the homes of those who buy them, but they sell these year long to all states? If they do and a person in a northern state buys one of these in december, the butterflies will die when set free. Also, butterflies cant live in the desert states can they? I just thought are these any concerns of the company or do people over look that part? Heck, if we set butterflies free even now they’d die of the cold where I live.

    • Emily

You can keep the butterflies in the habitat provided in the winter until they die. Their life span is only 2-4 weeks. This is pretty cool! Ours are in the crysalide stage right now and it has been so fun for my kids!

      • Lindsey

That’s not true. Many butterflies migrate…you can’t migrate, breed, etc in 2-4 weeks. Just Google it – butterflies can live up to a year. You should NOT release them into the cold nor should you keep them in the enclosure their whole lives.

I live in NV (desert) and we do indeed have butterflies!

Does anyone know where you can get the larvae at a good price online.?

  12. Nicole

Does anyone know where you can get the larva online at a reasonable price?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They only cost $3.00 and you get the coupon with this purchase. Awesome family fun!

  13. Crystal

I ordered this last time Colin posted it and our caterpillars are about a week old now and getting bigger each day! You do have to pay for the larvae – I redeemed the coupon inside the box online and I only had to pay $3, not $5. Still a good deal I think considering that if you order from the company itself, they are $19.99 and that does not include the larvae either.

  14. Sue P

Thanks! My Kindergartener has been begging for another of these. Used my Opinion Outpost points to pay for it, too!!

  15. Jesi

do you get the larvae from amazon.com as well? i think these will make perfect Easter gifts for my niece and nephew!

  16. jareds_butterfly

Speaking of Amazon, I have a $10 baby code (exp 3/31) that I’d like to trade for a 20% off coupon. Any takers? Email me at the_laskeys at hotmail dot com Thanks!

    • JeNeal

I have one!! I will email you!

  17. Corine

Thanks for the tip. My daughter has been wanting one of these. I got two one for her and one for her preschool class. I think it would be a great educational tool.

  18. Carrie

I just checked Toys R Us and they have them on sale right now for $11.89 and you can go to the store and get them. Just an FYI if you don’t want to wait for it to be shipped or don’t have $25 worth of stuff to get the Free Shipping from Amazon.

  19. Bianca

I totally recommend this product!! We are in the last stages of development and 2 of the 5 butteflies have already emerged! My daughter totally loves this and has given me title as “the greatest mom in the world” for getting her this!!

  20. Michelle

Just ordered the butterfly garden one week ago for my son’s Easter Basket. He saw it on tv and would like to have it. I paid $14.99 for it and have not got it yet (expected delivery date tommorrow). I emailed Amazon to see if they would refund me the difference. They will not refund the difference. They have a policy that says this. A little frustrating
