Can you believe that Summer is practically here!? 🙂  If you’re looking for a fun way to promote reading with your kiddos this Summer, you may want to check out the following Summer Reading programs available!

Half Price Books is launching their Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program again this year!  Starting June 1st, whenever your child reads for at least 15 minutes a day and fills out a reading log (with parent/guardian signature), they’ll then be able to turn in their logs between July 25th and August 2nd to receive one $5 Back-to-School Bucks coupon to use towards anything in the store.  Keep in mind that they are no longer offering $3 coupons for each log turned in every week as they have done in previous years…you can only turn in one log per child during July 25-August 2.  Also, they will be having a contest where one top reader per age group will be selected to win a $20 Half Price Books gift card!

Here’s how it works…

* To start, get a “Feed Your Brain” reading log at your local Half Price Books or download one here
* Beginning, Wednesday, June 1st, have your kiddos (ages 14 and under) check off each day that they’ve read for 15 minutes or more.  Grown-ups may read aloud for kids who are still learning.
* Add up your child’s minutes and have a parent/guardian initial at the end of each week.  If your child reads at least 600 minutes during June 1st-July 31st, bring the completed and signed log to your local Half Price Books store between July 25th-August 2nd to receive one (1) Feed Your Brain Reading Reward .  Your child will receive a $5 Back-to-School Bucks shopping reward coupon valid for anything in store, good at all Half Price Books locations.
* The Back-to-School Bucks coupon is valid 7/25–8/31 only.  Be sure to click here for more information and to read the fine print on this program.

Or if you have a Borders nearby, starting June 1st all kids ages 12 and under can participate in a FREE book promotion called Double-Dog Dare Challenge!

Here’s how it works…

*Kids under 12 read will need to read 10 books (no purchase necessary so they can be library books)
*List the books read on the form found here and have a parent/guardian sign it
*Then, starting 6/1/11 – 9/5/11, take the completed form to any Borders, Borders Express, or Waldenbooks store for a free book from this list of 20 books!

Also, starting May 24th through September 6th, Barnes & Noble is kicking off their Summer Reading Imagination’s Destination program where kids in grades 1-6 can earn a FREE book whenever they read ANY 8 books!

Here’s how it works…

*Kids in grades 1-6 will need to read ANY 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal found here.  In the journal, they will need to include to whom they would recommend the book to and why.
*Then from May 24th through September 6th, just bring in the completed Reading Journal to your local Barnes & Noble store to select your FREE book from the list found here (page 2).
*Also, parents/guardians can enter for a chance to win a NOOK Color for your family with the submission of a completed Reading Journal!  Just check the box on the Reading Journal for a chance to win.

Don’t forget your local library :). Plus, the library’s around here (Chicago suburbs) also offer adult reading programs.

Anybody else have errors downloading the Barnes & Nobles journal?

Word to the wise – we did the Barnes and Noble program last summer and two weeks after it started almost all of the books off the list were sold out. We went back towards the end of summer and there was only one title still available in my son’s grade range off of their list, I assumed they would have restocked! He was disappointed to say the least. We got the free book, but he had already read it so we donated it.

Thanks for reminding me! I was looking at the forms last week and forgot to print. We’ll do the Borders one since they’re letting kinds below Elementary school participate… mine are 4 and 2 and love new books. 🙂 Our local library does a program, too, and we enjoy visiting!

Ok, maybe I’m a hammerhead, but where is the link for the Border’s Reading Journal?!?!

    • Kate

OK, Im’m NOT a hammerhead……just not clicking on the correct spot! Phew!

Oh, and BTW, we did this last year through Borders and they, too, had a really limited supply of free books, initially. Then, about 6 weeks into the program, the company expanded the available titles. But, what was neat, was that each individual Border’s store had different titles. So, we made 2 different trips to 2 different stores for our 4 kids to choose from. Lots of fun! It was neat watching all of our boys (9, 7, 5 & 5) taking the time to explore and choose the one that interested them the most.

I was just thinking about this today and poof! you made a post about it, lol. My kids always do a program at the library but they will love doing this too.

    Thanks!

Another plug for going to your local library this summer. We are expecting over 650 children from toddlers to high schoolers to participate in our reading program, activities and crafts. It’s the place to be–and it’s free! Also, if you are looking for something to keep your high schooler busy this summer, consider volunteering. We sure could use the help!

Awesome, thank you! Always looking for more ways to get the kids reading. They always have their noses in books here anyway.

Hi Colin! Thank you for the list! Just wanted to let you know that TD Bank also has a summer reading program – read ten books and they will make a $10 deposit into your bank account for the kids. I’ve been taking my son since he was 2 years old – they don’t mind if it’s the parent reading to the child! It’s a great program, and my boys love getting paid to read!
