Extreme Couponing Affecting the Un-Extreme?
So, I received the following email from reader, Rashelle. She is feeling very discouraged about using coupons and even dreads going to the store. Here’s what she had to say:
Hi Collin, I know this may seem odd but I was wondering if you have heard from any readers that they have been feeling down about using coupons lately because I have. Ever since the “Extreme Couponing” show has been airing I feel myself getting looks from other customers. For example, I was at Toys ‘R’ Us the other day with my son and a lady in front of me had items that I had a store coupon for which I wasn’t going to use and I asked if she wanted it, she was very thankful and asked if I was sure I didn’t need it and my son said, don’t worry she has a whole binder of them at home, and her tone changed drastically as she said “Oh, you’re one of Those.”
I was in Publix last night doing my weekly coupon shopping and was flipping thru my binder when a couple of women walked past me, looked me up and down and then one said to the other “she’s loco” (crazy in Spanish) and at checkout a husband and wife came into line behind me at the end of my transaction while my coupons were being scanned and started talking very loudly about how the people on “that show” take advantage of shopping (and I didn’t even have a cart full of stuff).
There have been so many times lately when I feel glaring eyes upon me and I feel I need to justify myself to these people and say I am not a hoarder, I don’t have a small grocery store in my house, I am not clearing shelves, and so on, but of course I just smile and keep my mouth shut. I hate this feeling of being embarrassed and ashamed of my coupons because I use to be so proud and happy of all of my great savings and I don’t want this to ruin couponing for me, but it has left me very discouraged, and instead of being excited to do my weekly trip, I almost dread it. I was just wondering if I am the only one experiencing this behavior. Thanks for your time and for everything you do!
Since I cannot give you a hug (I so love hugs!) or tackle the stores with you, I am hoping that all of you readers can make Rashelle feel inspired to continue being proud to use her coupons! What ways have you motivated yourself in times of discouragement? How have you made your couponing adventures positive and fun?
Please ignore the negative people when it comes to couponing. I was just at Krogers on Saturday (with my family) when an elderly gentleman stopped me and commented on my binder and what a great idea it was (I didn’t tell him that it wasnt my idea…lol…I just let him think it was mine) He was very impressed that I was doing this with my family. Remember you do this for your family and not those who do not know you. Keep couponing and just smile when you get your groceries a lot cheaper than they do….
Here’s a hug. Keep the faith and remember why you coupon, which is to save a buck on things you actually use or will donate to a good cause. I am finding in my area that the number of couponers has exploded and the aisles in all the stores are now overcrowded with binder carrying ladies and guys! It’s exciting, because I love to shop out of other peoples carts and see what good deals they have found while having a fun conversation with a fellow saver. So go shopping with a girlfriend to keep your spirits high. In my neighborhood we will try to get to the store about the same time so it’s a social event, the store managers and clerks will even ask why we didn’t come a particular week and will want to know which store had a better deal.
I get the same reaction from people sometimes, and some cashiers will even argue about a coupon they don’t want to use (even when it scans properly!) because they think I’m getting too good of a deal. I also get pressure on the other side of the spectrum – people who ask me how much I save in coupons give me a funny look when I tell them how “un-extreme” I am! They automatically think that because I have a box full of coupons that I only spend a few dollars each trip! Don’t let the haters get you down. People often criticize or belittle things they don’t understand.
I can definitely agree on the “shelf clearing” statement. I cannot ever get any of the deals at Walgreens because everything is gone on SUNDAY! I was trying to get some of the Tone body wash last week and couldn’t even get that! It is a shame that people are going and clearing the shelves. I hardly ever have any stock left at my Walmart, so I just have to hold onto the coupons until they almost expire! I am about sick of rude couponers!
Same here. I can’t shop on Sundays so I am lucky when the shelves aren’t cleared. All I want is one or two items not twenty!
I wish they would stop showing Extreme Couponing.. It is all staged and for entertainment, leaves bad taste in non-couponers’ mouths. It is not educational at the most. Well, I am lucky not to be hearing all the #$%#@ from people ’cause I am deaf, so it does not bother me a bit.
Rashelle, don’t let them put you down.. Think for yourself!
I am so sorry to hear about people giving your rude looks or even cashiers/workers being rude. I have only had this happen a few times (thankfully)…the last time it was a little old lady who snapped at me to give her my coupons before she even scanned my items. My husband noticed and asked what that was all about. haha I just smiled and handed her my coupons and then had to tell her that she scanned one of my coupons twice and she argued with me about that. haha The guy bagging the groceries had to help me explain it to her. But I just laughed and didn’t let it bother me. This past time I went to the store I used the Self Check Out! It was AMAZING! All my coupons went through and I could do it at my pace. One of the workers suggested that I use it and see how I liked it. And boy I will keep doing it. I didn’t have to wait in line or deal with anyone snapping at me.
Sometimes if I see people buying something that I have coupons for (that I will not use) I give them to them. They get so excited. And they always say I wish I could do that. I of course tell them they can and tell them to check out hip2save.com and other resources that I have found helpful.
I just remember what I learn at church… Be joyful in everything! Especially since you are providing for your family.
I, too, have experienced the negative effects of the new couponing shows. Now instead of being impressed with my totals at the store, other customers and cashiers look at me like I’m dishonest. I just try not to let it get me down. I am doing this so that I can be a stay-at-home mom. I am honest about my shopping and only get the things that I will use. I also try to be very gracious and nice when I come across these people. I also teach couponing classes and cover ethics and how to be an honest and generous shopper. I think most of the people that are so rude are just uneducated about couponing. They believe only what they see on tv. 😉
–I coupon only because I can do it EFFICIENTLY and it’s ENJOYABLE.
–I tried the binder thing and it was SO much work to clip everything and file everything. I hate filing and I don’t want to hate any part of a hobby. Hobbies are supposed to be fun! So now I print and clip or get coupons out of my big accordian file the night before I do my shopping. Easy peasy.
–Also, I don’t want to deal with people glaring or staring or commenting or judging a binder full of coupons. I used to get really stressed out about it and when I thought about how FEW “surprise” deals I got out of it it was not worth it. I went back to using a little accordian coupon holder in the baby seat of my cart. That way nobody really cares or looks twice and I don’t start to sweat when I recognize someone at the end of the aisle. People are judgemental and you can say “forget them!” but is that realistic? Maybe if you drive to the next town to do your shopping.
–Does anyone know when Extreme Couponing goes off the air? Hopefully soon! 🙂
I hear that they are continuing to look for “Extreme” couponers.. so another season or more episodes are likely to come.
Jelousy is an UGLY thing. Take comfort in realizing that couponing is a talent and not everyone has it!
agree!!
So – people who think ‘reality’ television is actually real and also prefer to pay more for stuff than they need to are ruining your shopping trips? They’re the ones who end up losing out in the long run.
Keep on clippin’!
I went to Target a week ago and bought a couple salad dressings using two coupons. The cashier told me that because the coupon said “only one per purchase” that I could only use one. I told her that I was purchasing two, and that the “one per purchase” is different than “one per transaction”. She told me not to get mad at her, but that was their rules. I have a difficult time disagreeing with people and I’m still new as couponing so I get a little nervous using them. I decided to follow the directions I’ve been reading on the websites and ask to talk to a manager. I could tell the cashier was a little irritated; however she was still being polite. The manager came over and let her know that I was correct. Once he walked away she said (again in a nice voice), ” I hate coupons and ever since that coupon hoarding show came on we have tons of people using them.” So I politely responded, “Maybe it would help if you had proper training on how to ring them up.” I smiled nicely and walked away. I was embarrassed, but I told myself I’m gonna need to get over it if I want to save money.
good for you for saying something? couponing sometimes makes a difference in paying the rent/mortgage to a lot of people, she has some nerve! i’m glad you stood up for yourself!
Part of a cashier’s job in retailing is processing coupons…sadly this cashier still has more to learn…jealousy is probably part of some cahiers problem.
I am right there with ya Rashelle! Ever since that show came out I’ve hated going shopping. I did not start couponing because of the show. I’ve been doing it for years. Yet everything just assumes that I coupon just because that show came out. Which, that doesn’t bother me, whatever, you don’t know me. But what I hate is the cashiers that act like I’m trying to pull one over on them. They act like I’m committing some huge fraud by using coupons. And I’m not even walking out of there paying little to nothing. I use the coupons I have and pay the remainder of my bill and I am on my way. I mean, I still spend around $100 for my normal grocery bill after coupons and I usually have somewhere between $30-$50 in coupons. So it’s not like I’m getting a 98% savings like the hoarder people on tv. It’s just really irritating. Just yesterday however I was in Target and an employee saw me going through my coupon organizer and stopped and said “Whoa! You are serious!” lol! I said “Yep, I try.” She asked if I save like on tv and I told her no, I save between $30-$50 usually when grocery shopping and at someplace like Target where I can combine Target coupons and manufacturers coupons I can save around the same amount depending on how much I need. She didn’t even know about the Target coupons. lol! But yes, I do usually dread having to shop when I used to enjoy it. Now when I get to the register I’m wondering “Will I have an issue today??”
You are couponing to save money and provide for your family in the best way you know how. Be proud of yourself that you take the time to clip coupons, organize them, and seek out deals. Not everyone has the patience or tenacity to clip coupons, and that’s great for them, but people should never make you feel bad about a GOOD decision you are making. I have often shared coupons with customers in front or behind me in line, and very rarely do I ever even get a thank you from them, most times I get a dirty look or are flat out ignored. But I sure feel good about myself, because I know I did something nice, and I always leave the store with a smile, no matter how jealous of my savings someone might be. I am not an “extreme” couponer, and I do have to agree with the comments that suggest that this show has shed a bad light on the rest of us who don’t spend what amounts to a 40-hour or more a week job clipping coupons. This show doesn’t take into account what that person would be paid an hourly wage, the cost of gas to and from the store, the cost of the newspapers, or the cost of storage for the items. How many of these people have given up their garages and leave their vehicles outside in the elements and what is the added cost of that? What ethical concerns should there be in the case of one of the episodes I watched where a lady was stealing newspapers off of people’s driveways? There are so many factors that aren’t included, I wish the end result of each of their shopping trips would be made more realistic.
I also have gotten some strange looks from fellow shoppers these past few months since the TLC show. Since I have started couponging about 1 year ago, I have a large stockpile for my family and even give away tons of stuff!
Last year before I began couponing, we were struggling financially like most other families and I had no idea at the time of how much I would actually save with couponing. Well….let them all stare!! I just got back for a vacation away with my husband to Fort Lauderdale and Miami, where we stayed on the beach, IN A SUITE, all paid for by my couponing!! We’re all laughing all the way to the bank….so just keep staring and whispering….I’m okay with it!!
That’s actually where I live between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, glad you had a good trip and thanks for the sharing your experience 🙂
Hi Rashelle, I am sorry to hear about how the people of your town make you feel about couponing. Some people will always be judgemental, thats how you know they know nothing about hard times, saving money etc. I have been couponing for over 25 years now. Ive had alot over the years and sometimes it hurt, made me mad, and just plain curious. A family member got me started and wayyy back when, sge said tons of money on her items, but she had three boys and not alot of money so she learned and showed me.And remember the Stores that allow the show to tape in there facilitys are just as guility as the extreme couponers. I my not know alot, but i do know how to save money by couponing. So chin up andjut be happy please that you can save when they choose not too. May god bless you
I have just started couponing. I only buy what I need and always use a list. I have not had any negative experiences. In fact, I see a lot of people with coupons these days.
I have personally not been doing my rounds lately because I’m stocked up and don’t have the time/motivation to make special trips, esp with gas prices. Many of my RR, ECB, +ups also expired and once you get out of the rolling loop it’s like ehhhh… so anyway I’ve only heard comments about the show twice, and from cashiers I’ve checked out with regularly so it was kindof laughing in commiseration over the nuts.
One good “retort” which may or may not apply to you is “I’m a stay-at-home mom so I try to stretch the money my husband works hard for as far as I can.”
If anyone seriously engages you about the show in comparison to how you’re shopping, you can remind them that networks like Discovery and TLC make their money by exploiting lifestyles and personal situations that are out of the ordinary, which in turn makes it that much more compelling to watch to the average joe. For want of a better term, they are the “freak show networks” and that’s why you don’t have your own show 😀
“Yes, isn’t it unfortunate that there are people out there who take advantage of the system and ruin it for everyone else? I just provide for my family, not the whole neighborhood.”

EXCELLENT response, Abby!
You have the power to either accept & realize that lots of people think this way & so what or to simply stop using coupons. Use the old cost benefit analysis. For me it was ez Go Coupons! Think what u want, I think people that like to give away their hard earned money when they don’t have to are crazy. I think the key is to understand you have no control over what they say or think. You do have control over how u deal with it. Just accept it, be prepared for it and move on. I think a lot of it is motivated by jealousy (sad but true) lots of people do not have the time, patience or ability to comprehend what we do. Just be proud of yourself, provide for you family & coupon away…..
As to the show extreme coupon, rude couponers well my take seems to be a little different than most. I find it entertaining, really u want 87 mustards & your husband hates mustard & ur family only consist of u and ur husband. Sometimes it even makes me feel sane. As to people clearing the shelves so what, there are so many other things to worry about. Maybe they need it more, there is always another deal. Maybe the next time I score and they don’t. Who cares so what. Bottom line I like couponing most couponers are sweet, giving, generous people just trying to provide for their families. I refuse to have a bad attitude towards someone who clears the shelves or to let it effect me negatively. If I did this I would find frustration & anxiety in something I enjoy doing.
It really helps me to think about all of the things that I contributed to charity for free. I also think that if it wasnt for those coupons my husband and I wouldnt be out to dinner tonight or on this vacation, etc. So if people want to be ignorant about couponing let them its only more deals for you! 🙂
Who cares what people think or say.
Hi Rachelle,
The tough part is actually that youa re not prepared with a comeback, and that adds to feeling shamed. You did nothing wrong!! Questions make good comebacks, ” One of ‘those’? Well, if you mean, committed-to-saving-every-hard-eraned-penney-I-can people, then yes, i’m one of those!” When cowardly , passive aggressive people talk loudly about you, but not TO you, turn around and ask ” I’m sorry, were you talking to me?” When they say “no” , reply with, ” Really? Becasue you were talking about people with alot of coupons and i have alot of coupons :-))” Remember that you do not need their vaidation! Most of the time, “those” people are unhappy, broken people with hurts and headaches of their own that have nothing to do with you. The more you call it out, the more confident you will feel.
I used to be a timid person whose feelings got hurt easily. Not any more. I speak up, with truth, in love. It’s been a real life-changer for me!
Keep on Couponing!!! I recently started couponing more once I saw the show, but I don’t really like the show because it shows couponing to the extent that is almost impossible for the average day peson. My stores don’t allow 300 coupons at a time, they don’t allow 10 of the same coupon.. ect! I have noticed a lot more people couponing in my area, although I think some cashiers are getting tired of the coupons. I have made couponing my hobby, and I enjoy it. Don’t worry about everyone else, you are the one saving money not them!!
I’m happy to say that my checkers and customers have been nice to me lately. In fact, I’ve had people say oh you’re a couponer, and I’ve been educating them on the concept. Don’t be afraid or embarrased to speak up and defend yourself. You are doing nothing wrong.
Hey Rashelle and everyone!! I’ve gotten looks and stupid comments too (sometimes the stupid comments are from my own husband!). But for every stupid look there is a dollar you are saving, literally!! It takes thick skin to coupon sometimes. My present issue is a bit different…I told one person at work that I coupon and was talking about how much I save. Well, as you probably figured, word spread around the office and now I get a ton of questions while I’m trying to do my work. Asking about this coupon or that coupon; asking if I intentionally call and complain to companies to get coupons. Or, my favorite, if I like something on Facebook or am just talking about liking something, people assume (loudly) that I only like it b/c I can get a coupon for it. Imagine, I could like something I don’t have a coupon for, I’d have some nerve (sarcasm). Chin up! And remember, you’re the smart shopper!
I think this show has bone both good and bad. The good…it has shown me the best way to use my coupons by stacking and while things are on sale. I had heard of it, but never really understood the concept. The bad…it makes people think that it’s OK to clear out the shelves and buy 150 bags of croutons at one time that you know they’ll never use before they expire!!
I am really happy to see that now they are focusing more on people that will donate their extras and not have a mini grocery store in their house! Personally, to the rude and obnoxious, I would have just looked at them and told them that by using coupons I can provide not only for my family, but to other people in need as well.
Lastly, I think they need to make coupon classes mandatory for people on food stamps!!! Just my 2, or4 maybe 3 cents!!
Last week Marsh in central Indiana tripled coupons up to $1.00. Oh, how exciting! We never have triple coupons here and stores double up to .50 cents always but this was a treat! I got my things together and got there around 11. I spent about an hour shopping and had a cart full of stuff. After getting in line, not a long line, even though the person in front of me had done some considerable shopping too, she was the only one in front of me. All lanes were open, including the service desk for orders under ten items. Half my order was already scanned in when some jackass got in line behind me. He actually told the store manager (who happened to be ringing me out) that they “should be mortified at how they were treating paying customers”. He then turned to me and said “you could get all that back if you would just work ten minutes longer.” At the end of my order, the cashier announced I had saved $350.00 (I paid 51.00). I looked at the idiot behind and let him know I am not a brain surgeon, so $350.00 bucks was far more than ten minutes worth of work. I don’t have to work because I live frugally and have different priorities than a new car and a house I can’t afford. I’d rather cut coupons and be here when the kids get home for the rest of my lfe. Don’t let others discourage you. Know that’s it’s okay to be smarter than others. As for the cashiers, if you play by the rules, you can usually win them over. For the most part, they just want us to do things legally. And some people can’t be trained no matter what,so the best thing to do is find an alternative. There are alot of places to shop in cities, so I know we’re lucky for that. Plus, it’s just coupons. Remember that.
Glad to hear you saved so much and had a clever comeback (I unfortunately am not that witty) I’m from central Indiana too (Lebanon area) but now live in South Florida. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂
You know what, do what you do! I do not do the binder but think it is great for people who can take the time and it does save a good deal of money ! My husband thinks it is a waste of time to clip coupons but I love saving money and sometimes get stuff very cheap! So please dont let others who can not see your talent as great discourgage you, you are much wiser and smarter.
I agree ever since the show aired there is less on the shelves and Im not happy about the show and them buying everything up in the store. We should write a letter to TLC. I am.
Unfortunately, I’ve had similar treatment. Don’t let it get you down. I am a single mom and my divorce left me with less than 1/4 of what my income was when I was married. I feel like I am smarter than those who are paying crazy amounts for things they can’t afford! I’m teaching my kids to do the same. To me, you’re stupid if you pay full price! Why would you, when you can save or get it for free! I don’t clear shelves, I have a small supply of extras that we use and I don’t buy more than we can use in 2 or 3 months. Hold your head up and smile and think of the people who are choking with payments for things they can’t afford. Couponing enables me to pay cash for most everything and my car is paid in full! I have no debt and believe me, that feeling is worth more to me than some dirty looks from some goofy people. Don’t get discouraged!!!
I SO agree. Friends who know I coupon will comment to me, “Do you watch Extreme Couponing?” and they are often surprised when I tell them I am NOT a fan of the show. It makes couponers look like crazy people, which I am not!
I try to just remember that I’m doing this for my family and allowing us to have more money to spend on other things we want to do. It’s sometimes hard to ignore but obviously those people are so misinformed! Unfortunate we all get lumped into the same category. Totally unrelated but I have a question for all those MacBook users. Just got a Mac and am having problems printing bricks coupons. I keep getting the message: We’re sorry it appears we don’t support your printer or your printer settings. Can’t figure out how to make it work, so frustrated! I can print from coupons.com and target just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
In my area couponing isn’t as well known, even with the new show out (which I have yet to see since I don’t have cable).
But all my friends tease and say things like “it’s no big deal for you to make pasta salad last minute because you have a stockpile.” And Oh, I bet you didn’t pay for that case of bottled water. ETC. I know they aren’t looking down on my, just poking fun. Really, I know they wished they could shop like I do, but aren’t willing to take the time to learn.
I think most people just resent us, because we are smarter. We do sacrifice time to clip coupons, match with deals and sales, and spend an extra 20 min. at the store doing 5 transactions!
I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t let it get you down! Just ignore them! Or give them pointers on how they can save money, or give away coupons you aren’t using, I think that helps give us a good reputation of not hoarding, and not saving every coupon even if we don’t need it. etc.
Do you coupon shop for the thrill of great savings, and it’s fun and addicting? Or because you desperately need to save money for the sake of your families financially stability?
If you’re staying/getting out of debt by using coupons! Who cares what others think of you!
i have a stockpile, not huge, and I donate to my local animal shelter and a single mom on a regular basis. The fact that I feel the need to reface my post with that tells me something is wrong. That said, I would like to say, people have no right – not non-couponers or couponers to say how much stuff you are allowed to store in your house. You obtained it legally, I personally don’t want 100 mustards, sounds like a waste to me, but this is a free country – knock yourself out. No one feels at liberty to say that people who spend $50 getting their nails done, or $200 on a cell phone bill or etc etc should be donating that to the Tornado victims etc. No one really has a right to say what you spend your money on, that’s up to you.
Heck, I wouldn’t be discouraged if someone stared at me for using coupons! Or even had a negative thing or two (or 10) to say about me! I started to coupon after watching the show, and I’m happy that it’s on tv. It’s not just the couponers (who couponed before the show went on air) who need to save. I was completely impressed and am thankful that I was able to get a few tips from the people on the show because I’m trying to save $$$ for Disneyland in a few years and pay off some debt!! A part of me feels like those who couponed before the show started wanted to keep their tips and secrets to themselves, and I hope that’s not the case but it does seem that way. There’s nothing wrong with saving a little extra cash, and seeing that we go through a lot of ketchup (anything to get my son to eat protein, I will put ketchup on) AND cereal AND deodorant AND toothpaste, I would love to have stock piles of those, even if I had $3000 worth of them to stow away! So good for you for couponing, and for those of you who feel like your couponing is “ruined” because of the show, please take comfort in knowing that what you do (indirectly) has probably helped 1000’s more out there in the recession we’re living in now =).
I don’t think it’s so much that people want to keep their coupon secrets, but the way that couponing is shown on the show. It isn’t realistic and several of the people on the show have misused coupons. That is what hurts couponers in the long run. The people think they can just go out and get $1,000 of groceries for $40.00. That is where the problem comes in. If the show has helped you realize that couponing can save you money and you are doing it correctly then good for you.
I have to agree that I am a fan of the show. I would use coupons for clothing stores, but never understood how to properly use coupons for food, beauty supplies, cleaning supplies, etc. Once in a while I’d cut them out, but I’d always let them expire. Once the show aired I got hooked. I’ve never bought more than 10 of any item, so no clearing shelves. However I must admit that I would have never had the knowledge if it wasn’t for the show. I look forward to watching it every week. There are some people on the show who I feel are too extreme and a little crazy (mean) when they shop, but overall I love the show. I do see how it can be a little frustrating for veterine couponers, but I’m sure the hipe will calm down and only the really devoted newbies will continue.
Hi Melissa, it’s definitley not that I’m discouraged with new couponers, I believe everybody should take the opportunity to save money in any way they can and coupons make that possible. I just don’t like being portrayed or labeled as something I’m not because of the show, like a hoarder. I also believe that all couponers, new and old, should be courteous of each other and refrain from clearing the shelves and taking all the coupon inserts. I’m glad you have found the wonderful world of couponing and thank you for sharing 🙂
I know that I don’t feel as proud and feel like I need to defend myself when using coupons now all because of Extreme Couponing. The people on that show are ridiculous and they do create problems for the rest of us. I get asked all the time if I want to be on that show and if I’m like those people; while I have stockpiles I pale in comparasion and I certainly do not have food that is spoiling and so much that I will never ever be able to use what i have on hand – I also don’t buy 50 of anything at one time. The times I am able to buy items that are extremely cheap or free and I have extras or I don’t use the items I donate to my local food pantry and this includes items like shampoo, laundry detergent, personal items – I don’t need these but even poor people who need food need to be clean and need these items. I could never ever afford to buy the name brand hair products and other items I love without coupons and being a single mom I certainly can’t afford to buy enough to donate to others but I am able to because I use coupons and I take advantage of sales. While I seem to be the envy I do feel the need to defend myself and say that “no my garage is not stocked with cereal, my house is full of food and I’m grateful, I have plenty of laundry detergent and if you are in need why yes I’ll be happy to give you some because I share my savings. I put together the best gift baskets in the world and give far more than I could imagine when it comes to gifts but no I do not have an extreme stock pile of anything. I watched the woman buy all the lipstick a few weeks ago and a woman proudly going over her 100 rolls of paper towels and 100+ bottles of detergent and thought what a waste, just sitting there when people really need this stuff and people like me can’t get it because she bought it all and she is still buying. If you have that many bottles start using them and when you stock gets low start stocking up again that is what I do as I found sales tend to run in cycles and you learn when to buy what you need. It is frustrating I wish they’d feature realistic people and not the extreme; what is up with 50 tubes of lipstick can one person really use that much? She didn’t even look at the colors?? I get the system if you are feeding lots but what kind of system doy you have if you are not sharing the wealth!
When people say rude things I just assume they’re jealous they don’t have the skills! I think it’s very helpful to find a cashier or two that you like, it makes trips so much better for me! I have 3 Albertson’s within 15 minutes of my house..The cashiers I’ve encountered at the 2 that are closest to me are very rude and get frustrated with coupons and multiple transactions, and I always see other couponers at one of them, meaning everything is wiped out on the first day! So I purposely go the one that is 15mins away, I’ve never seen another couponer there, so they’re almost always in stock, plus the cashiers are great. it really makes the whole experience that much better when your cashiers get excited for you! Don’t let people get you down, just keep looking for “your” store and “your” cashiers!
I have to say that sadly the extreme coupon shows have caused people to believe anyone that uses coupons to save money is a whack job and we are all out there trying to stock up our underground bomb shelters or something…I recently started a coupon group on facebook for people that attend my church, which has turned into a great group…so many people are wanting to learn how to save money. We are going to have a class soon to teach all the newbies everything they need to know, but I will point out to them all, it’s not about hoarding or having your own store in your garage. My ultimate goal for our group is to be able to save money on the things we would normally pay full price for, but also to purchase the items that are either free or dirt cheap to give to our church ministries that help the needy. To me that is the best way for us to use this knowledge to help others. I will also make sure to tell them all that if anyone has an issue with them using coupons, to let that be an open door to teach them about how to save for themselves or even an opportunity to witness to them and teach them that our money comes from God and he wants us to be good stewards of what we are given. 🙂
Just ignore them, girl! Smile and know you’re doing the best for YOU and YOUR family. My husband is unemployed and without coupons, we wouldn’t be able to make it, so I don’t give a flying flip what people think or say. As long as my stores and cashiers accept my coupons, I’m good to go!
I can fully understand how you feel. I make my shopping trips alone without my husband or daughter because of the looks and comments. Usually I can keep my cool, but my husband gets angry and I don’t want my 4yo to hear what these people have to say about her Mommy. I donate a lot of items that I get if it’s a really good deal, I certainly do not hoard food. I also try to shop later at night so I can avoid most of the other shoppers.
I was shopping on Monday and I had several people stop me asking if I was “extreme” and even follow me around the store. I don’t mind helping to educate people, but sometimes it feels a little creepy. I even had 1 guy follow me to the checkout so he could see my price drop. Then he acted disappointed that I was paying over 50%. Then, of course, the cashiers started whispering.
It is unnerving at times, but I have to chalk it up to ignorance. I am proud of what money I save for my family even if it doesn’t take my total from $1000 to $10. I get what I need or I know someone can use and I try my best not to let “those” people bother me.
I am a fairly new “couponer” and don’t even have a binder and have also gone though some negative reactions using the few coupons I do have
I feel the SAME WAY. Its getting to be so dramatic to go to the store, the fun is not there anymore!!!
Keep your head up I don’t think it will last through the summer… at least I am hoping it won’t
Had a handful of coupons at my grocery store the other day–really small order, not many items, not many coupons. A customer behind me asked if I was one of those “extreme couponers.” I asked her what is that? She said you know that show. I said I don’t watch. No I’m not an extreme couponer, but I was VERY surprised to be asked the question.
Since I don’t have cable, I haven’t watched the show, but I have noticed especially at Walgreens that in the past two months it has not been worth the trip because the items are always gone. I think a lot of this has to do with managers who don’t order to fill their ads, but I have pretty much given Walgreens up.
I agree that unless you are there at opening on Sunday morning it isn’t worth the trip in my suburb of Phoenix. I don’t shop on Sunday, so I pretty much don’t get anything. I was couponing when there were not register rewards and instead we mailed in the monthly book. I’ve been ad matching and couponing since 1980 when I first got married.
Colin has taught me some great skill in the past two years. My savings has helped me get my daughter through college debt free. I’m most grateful for all I’ve learned, but I do think that Walgreens especially needs a limit on products and better stock. I don’t have these problems at CVs. If the item is not there I can always get a rain check even with ECBs. My Walgreens–one on each corner in any direction don’t give raincheck for items with Register Rewards
I don’t “extreme coupon” by any means, I don’t have my own store at home, nor do I buy 50 jars of mayo at one time, but I do enjoy saving my family money on things we already buy and use! Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed, others just don’t know how awesome and rewarding using coupons can be. My local wal-mart clerks are proud of how much I save and don’t hassel me at all about using a coupon. They have even given me money back from a coupon I forgot in my pocket! Just hold you head up high and remember that this “extreme couponing” phase too will pass and the coupon clipping will be left to those of us that have and always will use coupons! Good luck!!!!!
They just glare and talk crap b/c they’re jealous that they’re not smart enough to get stuff for free. Just think of it this way…you’re getting free (or close to it) stuff and they’re paying FULL price for their items…who’s the “crazy” one now?!
Rashelle,
Couponing is about making YOUR family dollars go further. If those people can afford not to put the effort into getting the best price possible I say great for them. As for me and my family, money doesn’t go far enough with kids. I personally do not have the amount of hours in a week the “Extreme couponers” seem to have to work on couponing, I do what I can with what I have.
My dad asks me how I save as much as I do…I tell him it takes a little effort and it goes a long way. Remember…it’s not about anyone else…its about doing our best for OUR families with what we have.
Be proud of what you are dong for your family and smile
i have to tell you i went to walmart last friday and this guy came from the back of the line and told the cashier it is easier if you scan the items with the slideing scanner not the hand held scanner when the cashier was scanning my coupons…..i just hate when people look at me when i am shopping with my binder and coupons because they just dont know what they are missing out on…..
i do understand what you went thru…..
I feel your pain, Rashelle. I’ve had so many people in my circle of family and friends say things like “I have better things to do” when I mention the 15-20ish minutes that I take out of my day to sort, clip and research deals, and it’s only gotten worse since that stupid show came out. I’ve also gotten the looks from strangers, but I honestly could care less what they think. I would say 2 things to you:
1.) You’re not spending their money, and they are not responsible for your money. Who else is going to save you and your family money? If you were flat broke, you can bet your bottom dollar that they would be the last ones to help you out.
2.) Find a buddy. All you need is 1 person that is supportive of your couponing to throw a little celebration when you have one of those amazing shopping trips. For me, it’s my mom. As soon as I get in the car at the store, I call her and tell her everything I got and how much I saved. That helps me continue saving even more than the savings themselves! Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate! You work hard for it!
I sometimes feel that I am the “bad guy” at the checkout line. I often get dirty looks from people becasue of my coupons. I am not a hoarder and only buy what we need and use. I have a family of four and have learned to cut my grocery bills literally in half becasue of what I have learned from Colin and all of you here at Hip2Save. I am made to feel bad sometimes by other customers and by the cashiers (they are never happy that I have coupons) but the thing I have to remind myself that I am doing it for my family and those other people are not paying for my groceries. While I sometimes dread the checkout line I will continue to coupon despite the bad wrap we are getting from the “extreme couponers”.
I feel your pain Rashelle. I regularly get grief from my local stores’ cashiers about using coupons. They complain that I use too many and it takes forever to scan them. When they see all of the things I get for free after coupons, I’ve been accused of cheating the store, fraud and stealing because they don’t understand how that’s possible. I’ve never committed any type of fraud and lot of the looks and comments are very hurtful. Why am I considered a cheap skate when I’m just trying to keep my 3 kids fed? Why does my coupon usage bother people so much? I have a tiny stockpile (only what fits in my little pantry) of the things we use most often…no store shelves in my garage. Yet when I buy 4 toothpastes at Walgreens, the lady looks at me like I’m nuts.
I live in New Jersey and my least concern is people looking down on me. Besides, I like that show! If I hadn’t seen “Extreme Couponing” I would still be clueless about using coupons. I wouldn’t even bother signing up on this website. My first transaction using coupons, I saved $58.00. I was so excited! I never bought stuff in my entire life using coupons until I watched that show. However, I do dislike buying things that are not needed the way some of the people are on the show. I watched a lady who bought stuff for pets even though she doesn’t have a pet of her own, now that’s too much. I’m not like that. I wish I would know or learn how those people on the show can buy grocery at a retail price of $1,000 and only pay them for $20.00 or not pay at all. That’s awesome! I have 4 children and I would love to hoard food at my house. I think that’s better than hoarding garbage like what other Hoarders do. Unfortunately, I’m a beginner (3 weeks!) in couponing and the stores (Shoprite, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Wegmans) in my area do not allow double couponing. That’s the only discouraging part. They said they never did even before that show came on. Oh well …. But I would never be embarrassed for using coupons, whether it’s for doubling or tripling or whatever. It saves my family money. And I wish I had known this before. And I thank Hip2Save as I have learned so much in reading their “Coupon Newbie” compare to other website out there. It is truly a hip when you save money! Thanks .. AV
The double coupons is how most of the people on the show saved so much. (Some also misused coupons) They buy a lot of junk food and skip meat and produce altogether. The stores also allowed them to use and double as many coupons as they wanted instead of going by the store policy. Couponing is great but shopping like they do on the show isn’t realistic. Good for you on saving so much on your first trip.
I NEVER feel bad – I live near DC prices are naturally higher and I’m a single mom – Nobody knows what we are doing for our families – Ive always couponed a lil . When I found out there was adultry in my marraige, he had cut me off from everything, with no financial support got me in huge debt during the year and a half trying to find work around my kids – now digging out of debt and finally getting support I have a lil extra time to stratagize my shopping with coupons – and if those people had to they would too – I choose to – I could have told my oldest his dreams of attending Liberty University in the fall are not going to happen……….instead of telling him, no you can go to the comm college first – I said ok this is what we need to do – they all have been great about it – I mean this school costs more than I make in a year!! – but he’s going and WE started paying in April 🙂 he is working to help – I have showed them the savings every trip I save over 55% – on stuff that we use I don’t have the space for anything we won’t use – when I hear anything negative, I can’t keep quiet, not my nature – I just say- “When you make that first college payment……you’ll be doing the same as me” and smile 😉
