Walgreens: Do You Have Issues Stacking Coupons?

I receive emails on a regular basis regarding various issues “stacking” Walgreens Instant Value store coupons found in the monthly coupon booklets with manufacturer’s coupons. It seems that several of you are being told by managers/cashiers that the coupons in the booklets are manufacturer’s coupons that cannot be stacked with other coupons.

Well, I have great news for those of you who are being told these coupons are not stackable. If you flip to the back page of this weeks (8/14-8/20) Walgreens ad, you should see an advertised Cottonelle deal (like the pic above). This deal clearly promotes stacking an Instant Value Walgreens coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon! I highly recommend sticking this ad in your coupon binder in case you run in to any cashiers or managers who tell you they no longer “stack” coupons. Also, be sure to bring your Walgreens corporate coupon policy with you every time you shop, as it clearly states the following:

When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.

Honestly, I’m not quite sure why the Walgreens store coupons are giving so many of you problems at the register. All I can say is to come armed with a positive attitude 🙂 and your Walgreens corporate coupon policy + an ad page promoting “stacking”. Good Luck!

It all depends on the cashier. And the manager. And whatever mood they are in. lol

    • Jen

      You nailed it. =/

    • Eve

Walgreens doesn’t have the greatest coupon training for whatever reason. Some of my managers still don’t understand how it’s supposed to work :\

  2. casey chruszczak

I have just found that you have to give them the walgreens coupon first or it beeps and they have to override it or something

  3. Christy Lighthouse

The only time I have time stacking is when I’m using RR’s to pay for it. I usually have to give them my coupons in a certain order or it won’t go through even with following the 1:1 ratio.

    • Kim

There is an order they must scan the coupons. 1. MC coupons 2. RR coupons, 3. in store coupons, and 4. in ad coupons. If you scan out of order the machine will beep and reject a coupon. I had that happen to me once and had the cashier start over. It didn’t beep the second time around and all went well. From then on out I hand the cashier each stack of coupons seperately so there isn’t a problem.

  4. LindaB

Crazy – my Walgreen’s told me their policy was one coupon of ANY kind per item. They are not getting nearly as much of my business anymore.

    • Jess

      same with mine!!!!!

      • amanda

me too…i hardly ever go there because i always have issues. it always beeps and they tell me only one coupon per item…ive never been able to stack manf w store cpns there…unless im doing something wrong..? i dont know. i just go to cvs now so i dont have to worry about it.

        • laura

They have told me in the past that the number of coupons cannot exceed the number of items purchased. So if you want to use two coupons on one item (which I frequently do), then you need to purchase a second item. Is that part of their policy or are they making that up… I have two cashiers I avoid like the plague, but most others have been very helpful.

  5. Jess

ugh…I don’t think my walgreens wants me to use coupons PERIOD. I always get told no, no matter what the issue, so I try not to go there. My latest issue was being told that I could not use a $2 coupon on a $1.99 item — they stood their ground in claiming the computer would not let them correct anything, all they could do with it was scan items…period.

    • Charis

EXACTLY! If it won’t scan/beep they just say, “It won’t take this one.” And that’s it…really? I really can’t stand them.

      • Jess

yup! lazy!!!! I even said to the lady “I don’t want to be rude, but I know for a fact that you have to manually adjust the amount of the coupon”…she got her manager, and the manager told me no too!!!

    • shirley

I was told that too, but she said I cannot change the price (down) that would be fraud…

    • Anna

The same thing happened to me the other day. I wanted to use a $2 coupon on a $1.98 transaction, which I had done before at that walgreens. The associate wouldn’t let me and the assistant manager he called wouldn’t let me either. I stood my ground and explained I had done it before. I think she though I was lying, and asked me to name the employee. Really? did she expect me to remember an employee that helped me a couple months ago? She said she would do it “this time”. Which was fine. Afterwards, i went home and decided to find out once and for all if that particular Walgreens followed the online coupon policy, so I sent a comment thing from the contact us section, asking that particular store what their coupon policy. I also asked that if they did follow the online coupon policy to retrain all their employees (I also said it was fine if they didn’t follow the coupon policy, but I’d like to know for future reference). The next day I got an e-mail from the store manager saying they do follow the online coupon policy and DO adjust coupons down or item price up so that coupons can be used. He also said he would make sure his employees knew for future references. So I would just send an e-mail comment. If everyone did that, after a while we should get no problems from our cashiers/managers. It IS their corporate coupon policy to adjust coupon/item price to make it work. So send Walgreens a note. At the very least you’ll get an e-mail response from the store manager you can bring in, no arguing with that from store employees!

      • christine

I had a similar problem and complained to their corporate office. After that, the store manager contacted me to apologize and admitted that he didn’t even realize that they had a coupon policy! I told him to look on their website for it and to train his employees how to use it! Crazy!

    • Tracey

I often get that BS from them– even asst managers/managers give that same line. Can’t adjust the coupon, can’t use wags and manufacturer coupon on same item or our policy just changed, etc. That is why I always have an updated copy of their policy- they make stuff up not knowing that you can pull out their corporate policy proving that you are correct.

Please print out and carry their policy with you. I have had to pull it out and show cashiers and manager more than once-as recently as Sunday when I was doing the dry erase markers deal.

      https://www.walgreens.com/topic/generalhelp/coupon_policy_main.jsp

Walgreens policy gives an example in their policy regarding adjusting coupon value:

“The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value). “

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Walgreens has lost a lot of my business. I have the same problems with them stacking coupons. If the item ends up being free or even if they owe me a penny they won’t take any of my coupons. I have tried to try and argue but they don’t want to hear it. So I’ve just quit doing any shopping there.

    • character

I had this issue today with the Expo markers. My favorite Walgreens has new cash registers. They look like computer monitors with a scanning device. It would not allow my Manufacturer coupon of $2/2 and the $3 walgreens coupon. I mentioned the coupon needed to be price adjusted to $1.98, but the cashier said there was no way to do this. She even voided the sale and did the coupons the opposite way, but without success. I forgot to call corpoate, but need to because either their new computer system needs to change to meet their policy or the employees need training in adjusting the coupon on the new system.

  6. Carrie

I agree with Jennifer, if it beeps, it really depends on the cashier what they will do. I have tried to show them a sale in the ad, like the Cottonelle one Collin highlighted, and they have told me, “Well it will work for that deal, that is why it is in the ad that way!”

Um, okay! So, I think that if they want to see you as doing something shady there can be no convincing them otherwise sometimes. Even with corporate coupon policy and ad in hand.

They always point out that the booklet coupons say “Not valid with any other offer” and say I can’t stack them because of that. 🙁

  7. Charis

They are a nightmare which is why I no longer shop there…I prefer Rite Aid, Target and Farm Fresh. Another issue I have at WG is if a product is advertised as producing RR you only get 1 per transaction. So if you buy 3 razors that produce 1 $2 RR each you only get 1 vs 3. At Rite Aid all the RR print out at one time doesn’t matter if you have duplicate items. AND if you do have the patience to make separate transactions at WG they won’t let ME use my RR on a purchase that is supposed to produce a RR. UGHHHH!!! Yeah, no more WG for me…

  8. Nette

There is only one cashier at my Wags who tried to give me problems. I handed her the coupon policy and she begrudgingly used both coupons. The following week she was looking at the sales paper on Sunday morning in front of the toothpaste. I gave her a coupon for it and she was thrilled. I just am Mary freaking sunshine when I go couponing because being nice gets me what I want. Usually they are great in there and they love to watch me check out to see how well I do.

  9. Sarah

My wag’s is amazing. I never had problems stacking my coupons. And I’ve made a point to be very friendly with them. I think it helps. I also share my coupons with them when I have extra. Yesterday the store manager was standing there when I finished my transaction and he high fived me because I saved so much money! I wish you all luck!

  10. jmartcougar

Why do I feel the need to rub this in their face lol I am always getting mixed responses when stacking coupons thanks for pointing this out Colin!

  11. Sara

That is funny because when I called corporate over a problem I had they told me those were manuf. and I could not stack them. Then they go and publish that. Maybe I should call back and ask them if any of them have a clue.

    • rebecacha

Same here. Remember the Playtex deal from a couple of months ago? I called Corporate and they said my Wags was right! 🙁

  12. danielle

ive had numerous problems at walgreens with their coupons and manufactor coupons. ive even brought their coupon policy with me and they still argue with me. certain stores are fine with it though. im glad you published this! thanks collin 😀

  13. Michelle

Walgreen is just tougher to coupon with than CVS, IMHO.

    • The Paid Housewife

I have seen this before too. CVS actually has given me coupons too that I didn’t have but they did. They are SUPER coupon friendly.
But, I love that Walgreens have updated their ad to share how to get the most savings- hopefully cashiers are getting more educated.

  14. Angie

The biggest Issue I have is in 1 particular store here in CA. I had to go at 11:00 pm on saturday night, so at midnight I would be able to purchase the deals for the week starting sunday. (they are open 24 hours), well, I do multiple transactions to roll the RR, I never hog the line, I always let people behind me, even if it’s only one person behind me, I let them pass. I had done a couple transactions, and the manager at that time was fine with it. Well come midnight, the new shift manager said, they are no longer going to allow for couponers to do multiple transactions back to back during the night shift. They will only do it during the day time in cosmetics. But the weird thing was she said it was policy for the store, but okay during the day.
I am always encouraged by the staff, in all 3 stores in our town to coupon, it’s just this one lady, I have reported her before for being rude and giving me a hard time, but obviously she is still there. So it’s not worth it for me to deal with people like that. I guess it’s only 2 stores to go to now.

  15. Amber R.

Never had any problems with my Walgreens but then again I only shope there if theres a REALLY good deal that I can’t resist. I have a question though what is a good price for toilet paper? I’m still pretty new at this so any help would be awesome, thank you!

    • Allison

Personally I think $5 for a 12 pack is a good deal, which is what cottonelle is without any coupons at walgreens! It’s even cheaper with coupons this week, around $3!

  16. Katie

I had an issue this week at my Walgreens, but it wasn’t stacking. I needed to return size 5 diapers (with receipt) and get a size 4. When I bought the diapers, they were on sale 2/$20 — same as this week. However, the manager insisted I owed $1.08 … to buy the exact same diapers in a different size. I just wanted an even swap! If I’d gone in without a receipt I probably would have been better off. I kept my size 5s and receipt and called customer service but have yet to get a call back from a “senior manager” … Anyone else have return issues?

    • Jess

My rite-aid gave me that problem. I was exchanging one type of John Frieda for another, and she would only give me a credit for the lowest possible sales price, and told me I had to pay the difference between the two. ugh!!!

    • Latasha

After my baby shower I took a couple of packs of size one in there and asked if I could exchange for bigger sizes since I got a ton of size one and two. They gave me problems but it was obvious that the diapers came from there (the Walgreens brand) and that I hadn’t purchased them (very pregnant belly, multiple packs of diapers, do the math, lol) It took about 30 minutes to exchange 3 packs of diapers. Major hassle. Ugh.

  17. Erica

I have problems any time I try to stack coupons or use Register Rewards. My sister-in-law lives in another state and she is always able to get the deals that they won’t let me do. It is so frustrating! I think I’m just going to stop going to Walgreens altogether and just do CVS.

  18. J-Star

I got kicked out of work because of “stacking”. I work for Wags and a customer was having problems using a Manu Q (1 off) and a Wags Q (the one in SS for 2 off) for Revlon at the Cosmetics Register. So she came to me and asked, I checked and everything was fine in the coupon policy. So the cosmetics advisor (who I despise) told me to give her the coupons that I rang up and headed to my managers office. I come in there and tell both of them the coupons are fine, and they give me some bogus reason why two coupons couldnt be used. Supposedly the manager is best friends with the cosmetics, so I pretty much raise my voice at all of them so I was sent home to “cool off”. Yeah Im a 250 pound man, why would I hurt the small frame beauty advisor lol. I missed a day of work over a coupon. :(. Im so glad I found another job, this stress in retail is not worth it!

    • Phalloeun

J-Star, I’m glad you got another job!

  19. Lucy

We only have 2 Walgreens in my city, and they used to be great about coupons. The last couple of months they have really started getting strict. They now say no more than 2 transactions per day, and they will no longer stack coupons from the monthly Walgreens book with a manufactures coupon. (They will stack the in ad coupons though) They say the coupons are manufactures coupons so they just won’t do it. I’m always very friendly to them and try to point out that in reality they are not manufactures coupons, but I’ve always been told no. I’ll have to keep this ad and show it to them next time I run there. Thanks for the heads up on this being in the ad!!

  20. becky u

Had this problem today. Called corp. Office and they said they will try to fix the issue!

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

What I am curious about is if their coupon policy is true “When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.” then why do I need a filler item? If I follow that TP ad for the cottenelle they will not do it unless I buy something else. I have even argured that I wanted to purchace their advertised ad item with advertised coupons.
Also some coupons in the monthly book do state that they are manufacturer coupons, why are they in a Walgreens Store coupon book then?
I was also told the other day that I could only use the monthly book coupon 1 time that it was “1 per customer”, but yet they scan it and if it is $1 off and I have 5 of the items for the coupon it takes off $5. How they heck is that “1 per customer”? Their computer just game “me, 1 customer, 5 of the same coupon”, am I right?
I play their games for the great deals, but I hate their “one rule, one day, and another the next time”.

    • melissa

filler items are needed when you want to use RRs. The monthly q booklet and in-ad q’s aren’t supposed to count towards your coupon to item ratio. I **always** give the monthly booklet q’s last, otherwise they don’t scan right.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I do it that way too, but they always tell me that I need as many items as coupons.
Good thing there are 2 really nice ladies that work there, the rest, I could do without ever seeing again. Rude people there.

  22. Jen

I had coupon issues with one Walgreen’s near me. I got so angry after one experience that I wrote a letter to the store manager, and sent a copy of it to the corporate office. I express myself much better in letters than in phone calls. Also, I figured it would get to someone who could do something, rather than some random person on the phone who has no power. About 4 – 6 weeks later I got an apology letter from corporate explaining that one of my issues was at the discretion of the store manager, but that the store manager was definitely in the wrong with my other issue. Included was a $20 gift card for my trouble. Needless to say, I felt much better after that. However, I still rarely shop at that Walgreen’s on principal. I cannot stand that manager, and I refuse to give him my business. By the way, I never heard a peep from him regarding my letter either… jerk!

  23. Tricia

I have another issue I just discovered regarding Walgreens and their deals. This week I purchased Dove hair care products. Advertised 4/$15.00. Well, the first 3 will ring up $4.49/each and the last one rings up $1.53. So, when you go to use a BOGO Free coupon.. you will get one for $4.49 and one for $1.53. I don’t think that’s right.. you should be able to use the coupons for $3.75/each!

    • Cremme

Ring up the two “treatment” items first, at $4.49 and $4.49. Then ring up the two shamp/cond, at $4.49 and $1.53. Then use your BOGO manufacturer’s coupon, which specifically states that the treatments are the free items and should be deducted what was charged to you, $4.49 each.

Yes it’s weird, but it seems Walgreens’ ancient computer systems are not going to get updated any time soon.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My husband is a pharmacist for Walgreens and he said they are phasing out the old systems and bringing in new. I think he said most should be replaced by January.

      • Eve

Yes this! They have to give you the treatments for free so make sure they ring them up in the right order otherwise they have to give you the price that’s on the receipt which will be less if the treatments were rang up last.

  24. Chrei Jones

Went to Walgreens yesterday and did the razor deal I had a $4 off Q and a $3.50 RR they said 1 Q per item and that I needed to add something or I couldn’t do it. I got the manager and everything. Still I had to add something. Didn’t make sense It’s not like it was like I got a free razor or something.

    • Melissa

This is just Walgreens policy – one manufacturer coupon (which includes RR’s) per item.

    • Sharon

What they mean is that you can’t use more coupons than items purchased. That’s why Collin often mentions getting a “filler” item, i.e. something cheap or at least something you don’t have a coupon for.

  25. anna

another new thing at walgreens. i did the advil buy one get one 50% and used $2 off mfq and $2 off infant care booklet coupon. the 50% came off after one of those coupons, should have been $3.50 off but it took off $2.50 at the end. just a heads up for future shopping senerios.

    • Katherine

Yeah, that happened to me too, I remember seeing the -2.50 on the register screen but wasn’t sure what it was all about…. seeing your comment rang a bell!

  26. Sandra

I gave up on Wags over a year ago…too much stress for a few freebies. CVS and Rite Aid are both super coupon friendly and not near as many complicated transactions just to get a “deal”

  27. Margaret

I only shop at Walgreens if I want an item that is only sold there or if there’s a FANTASTIC deal worth going for. Of the big 3 drugstore chains, I find Walgreens to be the most chaotic, disorganized, and unfriendly across the board. I would suggest that everyone who shops with them write an e-mail or letter to their corporate office to tell them how uninformed/non-coupon friendly their employees are! They should definitely know this since it has an impact on whether a customer decides to stay loyal to their chain or take their business elsewhere, which it sounds like most of you are doing. Good luck!

    • Anonymous

I work for Walgreen’s and am neither “uninformed” nor “non-coupon friendly.” Just because you have had a bad experience with a few stores/employees does not give you the right to generalize. I would love to know where you work so I could come in and give you an attitude when you are simply trying to do your job. Did you ever think that the employees may seem unfriendly because they get yelled at on a daily basis by crazy couponers? I have one regular customer that comes in with her four children, every Sunday at 8 a.m. on the dot and loads up all five carts with multiple transactions. After getting these deals (and holding up the line, thus angering other customers,) she comes back, every Sunday at 6 p.m., and does the same five transactions with more coupons. We are already understaffed (NOT our fault, though you could blame it on the corporate office,) and we certainly do not need to deal with a woman who makes her six year old son go through the line with a fist-full of coupons. I am all about saving money, and I coupon myself, but some people are so unreasonable about it. This MIGHT be the reason why some cashiers seem antsy or rude when it comes to taking stacks of coupons. Plus, if a coupon beeps and we accept it at my store, we get written up. Every time. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes just for a moment.

      • Margaret

Yikes, I’m sorry that you’re so bitter. I was actually addressing my comment to the previous people who sounded like they WERE dealing with unfriendly, non-coupon-friendly cashiers. Obviously this is a problem since Collin dedicated an entire post to the subject and this is an issue that has been discussed MULTIPLE times on this blog. The point of bringing it up to HQ would be to inform and EDUCATE the cashiers about the policy so they aren’t turning people and their coupons away. They are losing business, after all! Although I do not work retail anymore, I did at one point and I, too, dealt with my share of unpleasant customers…I’m sure you are not alone in your experience. Don’t take everything so personally. This is clearly a problem with Walgreens as a company and not one particular cashier.

        • Anonymous

It’s not being bitter; I’m tired of reading loads and loads of snooty comments from people whining about the problems they’ve had using coupons. It doesn’t stop there; they then included statements about how “uneducated,” “rude,” or “ignorant” Walgreen’s cashiers are, and that is not true for the three stores where I have worked. Perhaps people should be cautious to not generalize. I felt it was necessary to remind people to look at it from our perspective. And since this is a public forum that has bashed Walgreen’s employees several times, I have the right to include my two-cents. Everyone is entitled to an opinion; sorry if mine clashed with yours.

          • Annie Moose

All 4 Walgreens I’ve been to recently have been exactly as described above. . . in 3 different towns. Cashiers are uneducated about the policy or about coupons in general. She wasn’t targeting anyone, just expressing opinions about her experiences. Great that you work at a wonderful store and I get that it sucks being lumped in with the crappy cashiers (I work for Social Services in one of the best run counties in my state, so yeah, I get the comparisons to crappy workers and it sucks even though I’m not a crappy worker).
This post was created to let people share their experiences so please don’t think that this is a personal attack against you just because of where you work.

            • Eve

I don’t think it’s fair to call the cashier’s crappy a lot of times we don’t get trained right on the coupon policy. Even my managers sometimes don’t understand it. Blame the mangers and corporate not us! We are just trying to not get in trouble for doing something wrong.

It wasn’t till I started reading here after I got hired that I finally got how couponing was supposed to work.

To be fair as well some times the people who try to coupon don’t understand how it works either. Like all the people who I’ve seen comment on this blog about how it won’t let them take RRs and manufacturer coupons without filler items. People are wrong on both sides of this sometimes!

            • Anonymous

“She wasn’t targeting anyone, just expressing opinions about her experiences.” And so was I, Annie Moose. And if you work for Social Services, I GUARANTEE that you too are uneducated and have a bad attitude at work. Doesn’t feel so good when someone calls you out, does it?

          • Eve

I get you girl! It can be frustrating some times but I’m glad that this blog exists so i know what’s up with the coupon people. It’s nice that I have a heads up on the deals people are trying to get so I can explain how the transactions need to work to the customers and other employees so everyone ends up happy ^__^

Not to mention get some free stuff myself!

  28. Ashley

I did the Cottonelle deal yesterday and I had no problems! I’ve never really had problems stacking coupons at Walgreens…I hope it stays that way!

  29. Rebecca Henderson

I have completely stopped trying to roll my RR for other transactions at Walgreens anymore. I just pay for it all (out of pocket) in one transaction and then take the RR and use them at my grocery store for groceries. ALOT less hassle and the grocery stores have no issues in taking them since they say manufacture’s coupon.

  30. araceli

I’m staying away from walgreens there rr rewards are too much of a problem I,m taking my coupons to other stores. I was even told by a cashier that their system was not the best. I’m skipping walgreens no matter what they are not worth the headache. I’m sticking tot target and cvs rite aide.

  31. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I called the customer service number on the weekly ad and the rep told me the q’s in the monthly booklet are in fact manuf. Qs as stated so they can no longer be stacked. Needless to say Walgreens and I broke up;-)

  32. Niki

Yesterday, I did the Expo markers deal at my Walgreens; except the actual six pack of markers were sold out but I found a six pack of markers in the school supplies with a BONUS dry erase board. These rang up at $3.99 and my coupons worked! I was so excited that I sent my cousin, a newbie, up there today with coupons in hand. It didn’t work for her. First they told her that both were manufacturer coupons, I told her walk right back in there and tell them nope one is a Walgreens. When she did, they called the manager over and he was CONFUSED!! She told him that I did it yesterday and the lady behind her said I did it too! So the manager was all flustered. She called me back and I told her to grab a pack of gum because technically the sets were 7.98 and the coupon was 8.00, she grabbed two pencils and it worked. It was a very complicated scenario for a newbie but she stuck with it and I am proud of her!

    • Cremme

*high fives* to both of you!

    • Erin

I had issues with the Expo deal, as well. The Wags coupon only deducted $3 for two packs of markers at first store I tried. The cashier was nice, but he said there must be a limit of one on that coupon. I read that others were able to get the deal, so I decided to try another store. The mfg coupon beeped (as it had at the first store), but the Wags coupon deducted properly this time (?!?!) and the cashier overrode all the beepage. Really, I think the major Wags issue is their antiquated computer systems combined with employees who are too reliant upon said computers and are unwilling or unable to function once they hear that apocalyptic beep. When robots take over the Earth, Wags employees will be among their first conquests.

      • Annie Moose

        Lol!

  33. shauna

I was behind a woman at Walgreens yesterday (sunday) that had this problem here in NJ. Maybe she emailed you about this. The manager would not take both of her coupons and clearly he should of. He told her that the coupon in the Walgreens coupon book was not just for Walgreens. That sounded crazy to me. I am glad she left and didn’t spend her money there. But I wished she could of used both of her coupons. I use coupons everyday.
    Thanks

  34. Chris

personally, i am all for Walgreens “cracking down” ans limiting the number of transactions. Would LOVE to see them only allow one transaction per customer. I went to my local Wagreens on Sunday and all 3 registers were held up with people on their 5th and 6th transactions. Their carts were piled high with products and whats worse is all the people in line WITHOUT coupons got frustrated, set their stuff down and left the store without buying anything. The only reason I waited in line for 25 minutes was because my RRs expired that day. no wonder cashiers are sometimes rude and dont like coupons!!!

Sorry you had that experience. If I were rolling my RRs, I always let folks go ahead of me every other transaction. That way, I can take a breather to munch on some snacks, sip my drink, get organized, bag my own purchases, prepare my subsequent transactions, chat with my fellow shoppers.

The situation is how YOU make it =o)

Perhaps you can ask if you can go ahead since you have just 1 transaction? The cashiers and managers at my stores usually take couponers at cosmetics or photo, to keep the front registers open. Hope your store gets better at handling the situation. Good luck!

I would love to see this as well! It irritates me when people do multiple transactions. I ONLY do multiples when I am buying items that qualify under my health savings account and then I purchase those separately with the debit card for that account. Otherwise I never break up purchases. I will make more than one trip during the week if I need.

      • Leticia

@chris WHAT r u saying!!!???? Everyone that clips coupons does multiple transactions. And i personally always wait until the last customer is done so i could do my transactions .. Why are you in this site?? cuz YOU only do ONE transaction??? year right.. please stop with all this negative comments we all here to get deals and try to roll our transactions..

I have the greatest Walgreens ever at Naperville Rd. and West Loop in Wheaton, IL. The manager, Steve, educates all of his employees about coupon policies, and the order in which they’re supposed to scan coupons. I always have a stack of coupons when I get to the register, and my favorite cashier, Joan, always allows me a moment to get myself collected so I can get my different transactions and coupons all set before she starts scanning. When coupons won’t scan and they should be scanning, they always manually push them through. I know I am blessed!

    • Cremme

Woohoo! Same at my Walgreens in NorCal. LOVE them!

When they are knowledgeable and we are following all of the set policies, it’s a win-win situation. Good business for all!

The problem with Walgreens IVCs is that they say “Manufacturer Coupon” on them – but they’re not!!! Anyone who knows about mfg bar codes can look at one of theirs and tell it isn’t a true mfg coupon, but they print it on there arbitrarily nonetheless. I really wish they weren’t allowed to do that, because it sure would make life easier.

I had an issue yesterday at Walgreens. I had an $8 purchase. I used a $2.00 manufacturers coupon which brought my total to $6.03, I then tried to use a $3 register rewards and it wouldnt accept it. The cashier tried telling me that I couldn’t use two manufacturers coupons. The manager had to over ride. He was in a hurry! I’ve been having several problems with the stacking of coupons at Walgreens lately!

    • Cremme

You need “fillers” — see Collin’s guide to Wags shopping, or Christie’s guide at wildforwags =o)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The RR’s are manufacturer coupons. That is why it was not allowed. You would need 2 items, like a .49 candy bar or something cheaper if you can find it.

    • Jess

The manager was right and should not have overridden your transaction. One Manufac. coupon per item.

  38. Cremme

I’ve also gotten some weird store-specific policies such as:

    – limit 4 items of each kind per household per day, even though the ad clearly sets no limit
    – quantity limit of 4 per rainchecked item
    – limit 2 coupons per item (one wags + one mf, basically couldn’t combine baby/beauty/pharmacy booklet + monthly booklet wags coupons)

And the one that boggled me recently: limit 1 transaction per household per day. LOL!
I only have one question for that Walgreens (in NorCal)… are you trying to run a business or private club?! Good thing I have two other Walgreens to shop at!

These days it’s going to take one magnificent deal to get me into Walgreens. I’ve had issue after issue with them and I’m just done. DONE with them. The cashiers and managers make up their own coupon rules even if you do have the corporate policy to show them! Everyone at my 3 stores are always cranky and sooooo UNwilling to be helpful. I asked last week about a raincheck and I got the answer “I don’t know” along with the refusal to FIND OUT. Plus they are ALWAYS out of stock on the great deals. So unless you’re there at 12:01 am Sunday to clear the shelf (which I am not since I value SLEEP), you can forget about that deal. I WAY prefer CVS and even Rite Aid isn’t that bad. Fed up with Walgreens. And I’m a kind, polite, patient person! I can only imagine how more aggressive shoppers are treated.

I was just at Walgreens and had no problem stacking the the 10 in store booklet item for the Aquafresh whitening strips with the 7 dollar man. coupon. The only problem was that I had two walgreens catalina coupons for $4 and $2 and those I could not use so I had to purchase a candy bar and a nail polish so it came out to be 10 something for all 3 so not bad considering the Aquafresh is 30 bucks!

I have this problem with 90% of the Walgreens in the Jacksonville, FL area. And for this very reason, I no longer go to Walgreens. Each cashier and manager have their own set of “rules” depending on their mood and they are rude, rude, rude that I even use coupons to begin with. Havent been in a Walgreens in about a year…and the other hand LOVE LOVE LOVE CVS! 🙂

    • Me

      YES, SAME HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Michelle

I tried to do the expo marker deal today and was told that Walgreens is treating the monthly coupon book as manufacture coupons now. The $2/2 expo coupon would not scan after the one in the book. I actually had the store manager as my cashier, so I asked her to try ringing the coupons in the other order. It took the $2/2 coupon but only took $9 off when she scanned the monthly book so it adjusted based on the other coupons. I would not be surprised if Walgreens comes out with a new policy in the near future.

  43. Jennifer

I have this problem at my local Walmart….I use a “catalina” coupon that clearly says manufacturer’s coupon on the top, but b/c it says on the end redeem at Walgreens or Stater Bros or where ever I got it they give me trouble. I have found in Target, too that the cashiers are just so poorly trained. They have no clue the difference b/w a store coupon and manufacturer coupons. It’s so annoying and frustrating to have to argue and always take my problems to the manager…I wish they would explain all this better to store workers!!!!

  44. Sara

I haven’t had any problems yet at my local Walgreens. Although I make it a point to go to the cosmetic counter lady to check out my items. She is wonderful. The only thing I don’t like is when I go there on the Saturday before the new add comes out, the store has already taken down most of the sale prices in preparation for the new add coming out on Sunday. So it makes it a little hard to make sure I am getting the correct item unless I have my add with me.

  45. RobertAnna

This is not an “issue”. It is a problem. PROBLEMS need to be corrected, fixed, addressed.

this is not an issue. An issue is something that is debated, discussed, theorized, etc…such as Space Exploration.

Coupons not being stacked is a problem.
Problems affect you because they need to be fixed. Issues do not affect you -they are merely discussed.

    Thank you.

  46. rebecacha

Thank you Collin, you are so awesome! I have started dreading going to Walgreens and wishing I could just get rid of my Rewards and stop reading their deals to avoid temptation!

CVS on the other hand…it seems the coupon machine and I are having a love affair! 🙂

  47. Tracy

I went to Walgreens today and tried to use a manufacturer coupon for Stride gum. The coupon said Kroger on the bottom but it clearly stated on the top that it was a Manufacturer coupon. I have used these coupons many times and many stores including Walgreens. The cashier told me that they were advised last night they are no longer to accept them because they say Kroger on the bottom. I told her is wasn’t a store coupon. And she knew this because she has been there a long time but she would not let me use it.

  48. Barbara

I had a problem on Friday doing the 4 Degree deo deal. I bought the travel size (4 of them) as was discribed by everyone and I had 4 coupons. Luckily, I had also printed out the catalina that said I should get $4 in RR’s, because none came. The cashier called the store manager who insisted it applied to the large size only and I pointed out there was no size limitations on the offer. He went to cosmetics and did the deal using the large size and $4 in RR’s came out, which he very nicely gave me.

I also had a problem 2 weeks ago using the $2 off People Magazine coupon, also from coupon network. It wouldn’t go through the register and the store manager asked the bookkeeper who said it should have had a hologram in the upper right corner to be legit. That coupon was printed from their site…I had nothing to do with it. So I went to Publix and got the mag with my groceries and the coupon went right through!

If the real manufacturer’s coupon is scanned first and the Walgreens one after, the Walgreens coupon does not count toward the coupon to item ratio and attaches as a Walgreens coupon.

However, if the Walgreens coupon (IVC) is scanned first (before the real manufacturer’s coupon), it attaches as a manufacturer’s coupon. Therefore, the real manufacturer’s coupon cannot be used.

That’s why you must use the Walgreens coupon first! 🙂

    • thewaka

I think you meant you must use the Manuf. Q first. 🙂
