If you’re looking for a cheap way to stock up on kids’ clothes, then you’ll definitely want to check out thredUP! thredUP is a online community for kids clothing swaps and allows parents across the country to swap boxes of outgrown clothes for boxes of clothes in the next size up all online, without leaving the house!

And here’s the best part… for the next 2 days, thredUP is offering 30% off any box on thredUP (no promo code needed!!). That means you’ll pay just $11.17 to have a box shipped right to your door via USPS in a Medium Priority Flat Rate box! Seems like a great deal to me. 😀

Here’s how thredUP works…

* Head on over here to join thredUP for free

* Browse boxes listed in the thredUP community and select one that you’d like to receive. If you’re too busy to search, you can tell thredUP your clothing preferences and their experts will choose a box for you. Keep in mind that you search for boxes based on gender and age (preemie/newborn through age 9).

* Once you’ve picked your box, head to checkout. If you order a box within the next 2 days, you’ll automatically save 30% off (no promo code needed!). That means you’ll pay just $11.17 including shipping!

* As part of this process, you are required (this is a swap after all!) to list a box of clothes that your child no longer wears. You will need to provide basic details such as types of clothing, number of items, colors, brands, season and sizes. USPS will mail you empty boxes for your gently used clothes.

* When someone picks your box, thredUP will alert you and ask you to send the box. Keep in mind that it is free to send boxes on thredUP because the recipient pays the shipping. You’ll be able to print the shipping label and schedule the pickup all in one click. If you would rather drop it off at the Post Office, just cancel the pickup and leave a note for your postal carrier. As soon as your box is tracked by the USPS, you will see your box status change to “shipped” in your thredUP closet.

If you’ve used thredUP in the past (or a similar site), I would love for you to share your experience below.

I had a terrible experience with my first and only box. Nearly everything in the box was overly worn and stained, even though I was told everything was in great shape. For me it’s just not worth it, I get great deals other ways (buying end of season clearance with coupons, yard sales, etc.) and I don’t have to gamble on what kind of shape the clothes will be in. Unless you’re a Pro member ($20 a year last time I checked), the selection is no good. Pro members are able to pick boxes before regular members.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They did away with the “pro” program as of 8-1-11. Still the same company with poor customer service. You can get good boxes, which is why i have stuck around. Make sure you look for boxes with pictures. Don’t pick boxes with”play” clothes in it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They did away with the “pro” program 8-1-11.

    • Jodi

I had the same experience, the clothes were worthless! I threw the whole box in the garbage! I will never do this again….

    • Alea

Same here – the clothes I received were all faded and were supposed to be a box of 6 to 9 months clothes. I got a 3 month onesie, a couple 12 month things and the rest was 18 months….anything BUT the size it was supposed to be. 🙁

      • Jennifer

I also had the same experience. Not only were my close junk but they were not even the sizes or brands that the seller listed, and Thred Up would not do anything about it except let me give the seller a bad rating. I will stick with end of season sales and garage sales too!

    • MommySpendsLess

I had wondered about using sites like this, so thanks for the input!

Garage sales aren’t popular in our area (well good garage sales anyway) but people frequently sell kids clothing by the lot on Craigslist. I can easily buy new clothes on sale for about $3/piece for my toddler so for a $10 lot I need to like at least 3-4 items to make it worthwhile. If they’re charging $10 for a 5 piece lot my odds aren’t very good but if they’re only charging $10 for a 30 piece lot then I might try it. In this case, I don’t think those medium post office boxes will fit more than 8 pieces of toddler clothing max so I don’t think I’ll gamble on this deal.

I ordered a box a few months ago and same thing as everyone else…the clothes went to Goodwill.

    • Savings Viking

I’ve ordered several boxes from them. Most of the boxes were pretty good; I got a box of “holiday” costumes last time that had several Halloween costumes and some cute Christmas things for my little one. I think I paid $5 for the box, so it was really worth it.

However, I got one box…it was supposed to be summer clothes – short sleeve t-shirts, shorts, etc. In the description of the box, everything was listed as summer wear. When I got the box, it had long sleeve shirts, jackets, etc, with a note from the person who sent it that said she had to make some “substitutions.” I got the summer clothes because it was March and already getting hot – what do I need with winter clothes? They were also size 2T when she listed them as 3T, which can be a big difference. No way my preschooler would be able to wear size 2T clothes this upcoming winter, when she was already in a size 3T.

I don’t think I will be using ThredUp again. I also don’t like the fact that you *have* to swap a box in order to get one; I think that should be optional.

I want to try it but so nervous that I’ll be disappointed. I’m panicking b/c I’m going to need fall/winter clothes for my daughter…anyone happy with this swap site? Tips on how to pick a box?

    • kelsey

I am also in need of fall/winter clothes for my daughter ( 18mo ), I’ve ordered from this site before and had extremely disappointing results. The past week or so I’ve been ordering off ebay though, you can see pictures, converse with the sellers and everything I’ve ordered has been exactly what I expected. So far I’ve spent about $50 (75 is my budget) and have gotten, 4 pairs of the old navy jeans with fleece on the inside, 4 pairs of regular jeans, 2 winter coats( she already has 3), 3 sweatshirts, 2 pairs of boots, mittens/hat set, and lots of baby gap and gymboree tops, and a few cutesy halloween shirts. If you don’t like what you receive and the seller won’t contact you, let Ebay know through email and they’ll refund your money. I hope this helps!!

Have you tried Once Upon a Child or other second-hand shops in your area? The closest Once Upon a Child to me just expanded into a much larger building and started offering shopping carts and now I love shopping there. If you have time you can beat some of their prices at end of season sales but I’ve found it great for cheap pajamas (which hardly ever go on deep discount and are overpriced to begin with) and jeans (only a couple kinds fit my long legged skinny toddler)

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I love “Once upon a child”. I went to one in Ohio. I paid $1.00 for each item. They were all name brands (gymboree & gap) and looks brand new (no stain whatsoever). I might just go back to Ohio just to get more clothes at “Once upon a child”. Very pleased with that store.

    • Jessica Hills

I have only received one box from Thred up but I LOVED it. It was packed full of girls clothes for 2T and had about 4 pairs of shoes too. I ordered a couple more boxes so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I think you just have to be REALLY careful- look at pics if they have any and look for members who have good ratings.

  3. Cheyenne

I’m not sure how this works at all. I got a credit a while ago and haven’t figured out how to use it. Could someone help me?

    • JL

If you can afford to gamble with the $12.00 try it. I had a bad experience. The clothes were old.smelly and covered in animal hair. Not the description at all. Customer service was poor. My advice would be shop upcomming labor day sales. Also Gap/Old Navy will be having thier big 30% off sale soon. This is good at stores/online and outlet stores. If you shop outlet great deals.

    • H

If you have credit on thredup, it can be applied when you pick a box. Once you pick your box, when you are going through the payment process, you should get an option that allows you to apply your credit to the purchase.

  4. Betsy

I have bought one box and it was great. I chose someone that had a lot of stars or points or whatever it was. I read through the description of the box and it had a lot of stuff in it too. Some people put their one pair of “like new Gap jeans” in a box and think they’re worth $15.95 and they’re crazy. I figure if I can get a box where each item is no more than $2 or so then I should be good – even if they all end up being play play clothes or pajamas.

  5. Mel

I’ve had really good experiences with thredUP. I’ve ordered a total of 3 boxes over the past year and I was pleased with every box. I will mention that I picked fall/winter clothes a season ahead when most people were looking for spring/summer. Being willing to shop off season really opened up my choices. I definitely found it to be worth the money. I’ve always been an ebay shopper, so the transition to a site that didn’t offer pictures as a matter of course, but don’t hesitate to ask traders questions. Most will answer honestly.

  6. jes

I signed up to exchange clothes. They said they were sending boxes my way and to wait a month. It’s been a year, never received the boxes. I decided since they can’t figure that out I’m not going to use their site.

    • Rebekah

that is your PO’s fault not theirs……there system automatically orders you boxes when you sign up….however some PO’s refuse to bring them to the door.

  7. Melissa

I have ordered a box before and was pleased!!

  8. Tia

Clothing is 50% off at my Salvation Army on Saturdays. Being able to see the clothing and donate to charity is a much better bargain to me.

  9. Jessica

My first and ONLY order from there was complete junk..I’m not overly picky about things and this was junk…I took the clothes to goodwill and ended up using none of it.

  10. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

A medium size flat rate box isn’t very big so I can’t imagine that there would be many items in it. I can also see it being a disaster receiving stained & worn out clothing. What recourse do you have when you get a box with unwearable items? I’d rather stick to buying new at stores with coupon discounts or shopping at garage sales or thrift stores.

  11. Becky

That is EXACTLY the problem! YOU CANNOT post pictures…I sent a perfectly good box of stuff..nothing stained, ripped, or to worn out and the lady lied and said I sent stained clothes…I have been a seller on ebay for yrs. and never had problems! Plus there is almost NOTHING for older kids…my DD wears a size 7 now and the selection is really poor. I have had good clothes from other people come to me but I too had to be very selective. I don’t think it’s worth the money they charge!

    • Rebekah

you can on their Facebook page and MANY moms do

  12. Shelby

I got a box that was described as hardly worn with no stains, rips or fading. The clothes were faded, had holes & stains, one missing a button, and they smelled of cigarette smoke. Customer service wrote back and told me to wash the clothes (really?!) to get rid of the smell which (according to them) was probably from the delivery truck and they ignored all of the other problems. I was so excited for this box and I know that they are used clothes but was disappointed with the quality and with how it was handled.

  13. H

I personally have had excellent experiences with Thredup. However, there are people who falsely advertise the condition of their clothing on the website. That is what the ratings are for- pay attention to them! And yes, you CAN post pictures of your boxes, on the Thredup facebook page. I personally follow these guidelines when picking boxes from Thredup:
    1) I only pick boxes from people who have a 4-star rating. When you send someone a box, they rate your box based on clothing quality and style. If you are sending crappy clothing, you will get crappy ratings. So, don’t buy a box from someone with only one or two stars!!! That is the Thredup team’s method of quality control, so pay attention to ratings!
    2) If I find a box I want to pick and it is a new seller, with no ratings, I will only pick the box if they have a picture posted on facebook.
    3) If you are interested in a box, you can send the seller a message to ask about clothing quality, whether or not they are from a smoke-free home, etc. before you pick the box. I always do this with new sellers- just to make sure I’m getting good quality clothing.
    4) I only pick boxes that have at least 12-13 items in the box or more. (yes the boxes aren’t huge but if you roll up the clothing you will be amazed at how many things you can fit.)

Again, I know many people have had negative experiences, and Thredup isn’t for everyone. But I’ve had excellent experiences by being careful in choosing boxes, and I’ve also gotten rid of lots of clothing that is too nice to sell at garage sale prices but not “name brand” enough for my local consignment shops. I would at least give it a try!

    • Monique

I have to agree with H. I have been a member since shortly after the site first started. The trick is just to be super picky. I also have noticed an influx of crappier boxes following whenever they have a super good deal on sign-ups. I usually am shopping far ahead of my kids sizes so it works good for me. My oldest however jumped 3 sizes from Sept-Dec of last year and Thred-up was perfect. It sure helped my budget and now that my oldest have pretty much sized out of Thred-up (hardly anything for 14-16) I trade his old stuff and get great quality items for my 2yo for next to nothing since I usually have lots of credits from posting low-stock boxes. My absolute fav box had numerous Gymboree shirts & sweaters and pants, as well as a Lands End Barn coat that looked never worn and was $45 brand new as well as several pricey John Deere toys.

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I bought 2 boxes back when Collin had a deal for $1 per box. I was super happy because as you can imagine for $1 I was able to pick the good stuff and donate the rest. I do agree that some items were very faded/worn and a lot of them were in sizes far from what I ordered. Overall, I loved my boxes because there were $1, if I paid $11 and recieved what I did I would be very upset.

  15. Julie

Just posted the same on the FB Thred up page. The bigger sizes don’t have enough in the boxes to make it worth it – 5 pairs of used hands sweat pant bottoms for $15.95? I can get them on sale new for $4.00.

I see a lot of very low end brands that tend to not wash well (from my experience). Cheap brand+ washing/wearing= worn out clothes.

  16. charla

I tried Thred Up a few months ago and had a terrible experience. The boxes come directly from the people using the site, so there is no quality control. I ordered a box of “good quality and good condiiton” kids clothes. The clothes I received were in terrible condition. They were all very worn, stretched out and stained. Not a single piece was wearable. I dropped the entire box off at Goodwill. I will never again buy from this site.

  17. Sarah

I have gotten only one box from thred up, a 3-6 month boy box. Every piece of clothing was from the 90s. Old and faded. I will never use that company again! Too much of a gamble.

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow…. looks like a lot of parents have had bad experiences with this company.

  19. Christina

I’am an active ThredUp member, and I absolutely love this program. Although it is a gamble but most people do leave very good discriptions . I have gotten Gap jeans and shirts, Levis jeans , Osh Kosh Shirts and jackets as just a few examples , items I probably couldn’t afford in stores. You can go on The ThredUp facebook page and some of the members post pictures of there boxes there. I would think of this site as an online yard sale but a little more exciting. I was able to get a box today for only $5 and some change with the 30% off plus I had a credit for $6 for sending ” low supply boxes” . YAY! I really think that if you have’t tried this yet ,you should, but read the discriptions very close and remember they are used clothes. Also it’s great to send your kids outgrown clothes to someone else who needs them.

  20. Dannielle

I used my $13 credit from Earth Day or whatever to get a free box this morning (I was able to get the box for free during the 30% off sale, otherwise I would have had to pay $5 for a box). I’m not holding my breath, my last box was utter crap.

Before the box I purchased this morning, ThredUp had given us a $15 credit which was used on the most worthles box of clothing. I cannot imagine someone paying $15 for the items I recieved. I find WAY better deals at Goodwill/end of season racks.

Luckily I have not spent a dime of my own money for these two boxes.

  21. Dannielle

I don’t mean to be rude but a earlier commentor said she sends users at ThredUp her clothes that are too nice for garage sales…

With ThredUp you make $0 on your nice clothes.
Sell them at a garage sale and you would make more than that.

This site doesn’t make sense to me at all. In the FAQ page they say it’s a hassle to upload photos but I think that would cut out a lot of the crap people are sending out.

  22. Diane

Wow, I am feeling so fortunate as I read these comments. I have received two boxes so far, and both were stuffed as full as they could be with clothes for 3-6 month old girls. One box had a onesie with a few faint stains, but everything else was in terrific condition and from good quality brands. I’m sorry to hear that not everyone is having this experience!

  23. Kim

My one and only box contained mostly clothing with holes and everything in the box stunk so bad like mildew that even after 5 washings with bleach and drying in the sun they still smelled…NEVER AGAIN! 🙁

  24. Taryn

I had two great boesx with Thred Up, and one ok box. I am sending great boxes, though, and I think i you just are very picky, and choose boxes from people with great ratings, and those with pics on photobox, you do well. I tried doing Ebay, and sometimes it is hit and miss as well, and I do not really like their new system. I like trading boxes, and will continue to use the program as long as I get good products.
