Sent from reader, Crystal:

I’ve been searching for unique craft ideas. About a year ago, I found a website on ‘eco-friendly’ kids crafts. One of the things I came across was toilet paper roll flowers. I’ve been saving toilet paper rolls for a while and they were starting to pile up. My fiance’ is deployed and in the midst of my loneliness I decided to see what I could do with these.

I cut the rolls into 5ths, painted them black, rolled in glitter, and after they dried I put them together with glue (which by the way was NOT easy) and added a silver bead (extras from Christmas bead strands). The frame was a frame we got for free on base (has been sitting around for over 2 yrs). I painted it black and put polka dots on it.

It’s now hanging above our bed (my bed wasn’t made so I made sure it WASN’T in the pic). I think these would be really cute to do in bright colors for a little girls room, or to paint white with glitter for some fun xmas crafts for kids. Hope y’all like 🙂

Wow! That is really nice & what a great idea! I would of never known you used toilet paper rolls. 🙂

  2. Ashley

Wow that is a great nifty little craft! I am going to start saving up those rolls (as soon as I figure out some sort of storage solution, where the kids wont crush them) so I can use them for crafts!

If you come up with a great storage idea, please share! I save all kinds of things for crafts at school, sunday school and bible school projects. The worst is finding a place to keep the extra things. We re-cycle and again, I know its the right thing to do, but where i need to keep the items is not very convenient.

      • Emilee

I’m with you Sharron, I need some ideas as well!

We’ve done this before with a bit of a twist. Take a hole puncher and punch holes at the end of each petal on the inside and use a pipe cleaner to hold it together more easily than glue. To turn them from flowers into snowflakes, punch a second hole in each petal toward the top and run another pipe cleaner around the circle. Apply glitter and you have a cute ornament.

those are awesome! gonna start saving those rolls so i can try! thanks!

  5. Ashley57

    This is so cute! Awesome!

  6. leisa

i seen an idea like this on pinterest.com, the site is really neat to look at and get ideas!

  7. Julie

these would really be cute ornaments 🙂

We save out TP tolls all year long and use wth pinecones for firestarters. We heat our house with wood, and this is a easy firestarter!

    • Leisa

Really i have never heard of this, we heat with wood too. What is the secret?

      • anita

I melt old wax over the VERY dry cones, then we just stick them into the TP cones and FIRE starts!!!

        • Leisa

interesting, i fight alot with starting fires will kept that in mind next year! Thank you

        • Mary Ann

You can also save the lint from the dryer and put them in egg cartons, pour a little old wax over it and close the lid. Then you can tear off one at a time to use to help light those fires.

          • dar

Something I’m sure Mary Ann meant to mention too was to be sure to only use cardboard egg cartons, the styrofoam ones are not good to burn. My grandmother uses one of the candle warmers to melt a candle, that is down to nothing, to pour the wax into the cartons too.

We used to make them in girl scouts and I just made a batch recently for the fire bowl. I’ve heard that you have to be careful what kind of fabrics the lint was from… Ideally it would be all natural fibers like cotton rather than synthetics to avoid letting fumes into the air. An alternative is to use saw dust. An old metal coffee can is great for heating the wax in – you can bend a pour spout and you don’t have to worry about getting wax off you pots.

we only use our fireplace once a year or so if power goes out (like last night!!!) but I found the fastest way to start a fire is by busting up a presto log, and then putting the wood on top of those small burning pieces…i’m a girly girl that hates a lot of hard sweaty work and it’s so easy for me to do it this way.

Anita.. hadn’t thought of firestarters.. I am like one poster mentioned below..a bit of a ‘germ phob’..I saved a whole ziploc bag(crushed) one time, then tried to think of something to do with them.. then just put them in recycling container..after that. But firestarters would be perfect.. hmmm… thnx..

I used them for my Christmas tree felt bow topper. You know how you put the big bow on top and have the several streams of ribbon hanging down..I rolled my 5 seperate ribbons onto the tp tubes.. taped the ends and they store wonderfully. They work for any type of ribbon really.. I do alot of crafts for cardmaking and such.

Crystal..you craft project is so pretty and a great idea..what a way to pass time until your fiance comes home and recycle all at the same time. The paint will seal in the germs..haha.. One suggestion: type up the story behind the reason for your craft. If you can take it out of it’s frame, tape the story to the back of the artwork. Never tell your future children the entire story. Just tell them “it has a special meaning that is hidden behind it” so they never get rid of it…one day when you are gone (sorry don’ t mean to already put you ‘at peace’ already..just an example), but it would be so awesome for them to read how you ‘waited for your sweetheart to come back from war and you made this to surprise him when he returned and hung it over your bed’ awwwww!!!!! I know I would love to find a note like that behind my parents framed artwork one day when they both are gone. I would cherish the note and the artwork. 🙂 Thanks for sharing .. JOY

    Crystal,
Good for you – these are super cute and I like how your framed and added your own touch with the polka dots. Very chic!

  10. Janet

Sweet. In white and pink they’d look like plumeria.

  11. kari

    pricelesssss

  12. Jiggy

    Those look really pretty!

  13. Kay

I love the glitter on them! I did something like this also except I spray painted mine gold and used hot glue to glue them. Also instead of separate flowers I glued on “branches” and flowers in random areas so it was all one piece. I want to start collecting more tp’s to add to it though so maybe it could cover one side of my wall or something. Very cute though!

  14. Trisha

I just finished a project like this and hung it over our bed too. I painted my toilet paper red and hot glued it to a white canvas in the shape of a flower. After looking at it, I decided I’m going to add more toilet paper flowers to it. (probably this Spring when it gets a little warmer in the garage to paint) But I had a great time with this project!

  15. Ashley

oh great. thanks. now I have to explain why in the world I’m saving toliet paper rolls in a box. Thanks! 😀 haha I’ll try it tommorrow since I just finished a roll today!

  16. Lindsey

    Very cute and creative!

  17. Tilla R Ham

i think a great way to store some of these crafty items is the photo boxes that are really cute at michael’s. they are often on sale 3 for 5…they are decorated differently and some look really cute left out around the house.

i always hated the tp projects for things that touched your eyes or mouth like horns or telescopes ha…i’m a germ freak…but I think i might just make tp flowers!

  18. KARI

that looks cute and fun , love it

  19. Lily

    Creative!

  20. Tracy Johnson

Coupons AND Crafts I’m in heaven! I’m going to make these this year. Already with all the posts ideas are swimming in my head. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Ashleigh

If you use hot glue, then it makes sticking it all together pretty easy 🙂

  22. wingnut

Very clever idea! Please tell your fiance I THANK HIM (and you) for his service and your strength. God bless!

  23. MA

Would never have guessed they were tp rolls. I always recycle mine to the children’s library for crafts, along with a lot of other things. Think I will have to pull these out & make fire starters, along with the paper egg cartons. Thanks so much all for the ideas and for the very nicely done project and picture. And your husband’s service is very much appreciated, as is your support.

  24. Martina

Very cute:) What clever ideas everyone is coming up with!

I’ve been saving my TP rolls to use for seed starters in a couple of months. You should be able to plant straight into the ground (saw the idea on tv).

  25. dar

That is so cute and creative! Nice touch with the frame and the silver centers.

Another use for tp rolls is to start seedlings for your garden. I usually cut them in half so I have 2 tubes then fold one end so all the soil doesn’t fall out and they can stand up. You plant your seedlings in them so they get bigger before you plant outside. You can water them from a tray you have them sitting in, and the tube wicks water up. When you go to plant them outside you plant the tube and all since it will decompose (and usually it is starting to by the time you plant). Cheaper to buy a bag of seed starter or soil than the peat pots!

  26. Christine

Very cute project! I’ve seen some amazing projects like this on pinterest.com. I’ve just started saving rolls for one of the projects I saw that used the rolls to make flowers, leaves, and stems in a frame. I’ve also seen a lot of geometric designs with them. And I’ve seen them used to organize extension other random cords. I definitely recommend checking out pinterest for other ideas.

Wouldn’t these make pretty additions to the windows in summer?? You could lace them all together and make a curtain embellishment out of them. Just thinking out loud – thanks for all the great ideas, ladies!!
