does anyone know how well these work at preserving food? Is there a big difference between this versus a freezer bag?

    • norma

I love mine. I have kept meat for a year and no freezer burn. It also works with the ziplock vacuum bags (they’re cheaper and often have coupon)

    • CW

I absolutely love mine and have used it for 8 yrs. During Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, I did not lose about $500 in meat because the meat was airtight in Foodvac bags…. kept it frozen longer!!! That alone convinced many friends and family to get one, and they were thankful when Hurricane Wilma came, they didnt lose their meat!

  2. robbie

Oh darn! Not available at my store 🙁

  3. Jesse

I was wondering the same thing, wondering if it is worth the $10…..

    • Sandra

Right, cuz I’m guessing the system requires that you purchase special bags as well?

      • Jesse

that’s what I’m thinking. And is it really any better than freezer bags?

        • Ashley57

I had a friend who had one of these and swore by it – it is the same concept as a freezer bag, but instead of you trying to get all the air out yourself, it sucks the air out for you. HTH!

      • norma

Sandra, works with the ziploc vacuum bags, and the old reynolds vacuum bags if you happen to have them.

      • CW

You can throw the used bags in your dishwasher (turned inside out) and use them again for new meat. You just cut the top off to a straight line each time. I typically get 3-4 uses out of a quart bag, the smallest/last use to store bay scallops.

According to the Walmart.com site, it gets almost 5 stars. 2 people gave it 1 star, and 2 gave it 2 stars but the rest of the 54 reviews were 4 or 5’s. Sounds promising.

  4. ashley

I stick a straw in my freezer bags and suck out the air, but I can’t bring myself to do that for meat. I wonder if this would be any better?

I use a food saver for freezing corn and meats. Not the fresh saver that Collin is showing but more like the one pictured on the coupon. I love my food saver. It eliminates freezer burn and your food absorbing other flavors from your freezer. You do have to buy special bags. If you are in the market for one the best thing to do is “like” Food Saver on facebook. They get tons of deals like 50% off their sealers. Also I order my bags and rolls from their website and get free shipping and 50% off deals. I buy the bags by the case and then resell them to friends for what I paid to get the deals.
I have never used this fresh saver but think I will pass on this deal.

I have the larger version on the food saver like she posted. I love it!!! I am going to get one of these so I can put it in my camping box. It keeps my food freezer burn free. You can you the vacuum bags by ziploc too. The food saver ziploc bags can be wash and reused. They are very thick. I even marinate steaks and chicken in the bag and suck out the air. Its great cause as it thaws it marinates the meet. Great for camping cause you can have all your meals frozen and put in the cooler.

    • Whitney

Great camping idea!! I may buy it just for that! 🙂 Thanks!!

Too bad the coupon can’t be used on bags. I bought a couple of the foodsavers posted on this site last year. I’m embarassed to say that I still don’t know how to really use them. I sat down and sort of got the hang of one but not the other. Just another appliance on my counter taking up space! LOL However, after having to throw aways a few items that could have been saved had I used my FoodSaver, I think I’ll give it another go and figure out just what to do.

    • Elis

Check out youtube for tutorials of how to use it!

  8. Jessica

I have this little foodsaver and I love it! I use it for meats and cheeses in the fridge mostly! you have to have the special bags but I love it! hope this helps someone!!

  9. Kristen

There is also a $2 coupon for the bags.

  10. shirley

I got my FoodSaver 8 years ago as a wedding gift and it is by far the best thing I ever received. The rolls of bags go a long way and it saves me from letting food go to waste. I like being able to purchase in bulk and then put in more individual sizes.

    • CW

Ditto – same as shirley I got it as a wedding shower gift 9 yrs ago and it was my favorite gift to this day!

  11. Sarah W

Bed, Bath and Beyond have them for $24.99. But if you use the 20% off coupon and the $10.00 coupon it will be $10.00 plus tax.

    • Sarah W

They also have bags for the units there too!!

    • Whitney

Where are you seeing them on BBB? I am looking on their site right now and I don’t see it? Could you post a link? Thank you! 🙂

    • Shirley

I didn’t know you can combine the 20% store coupon and MQ at BBB?

      • Lea

I combined the coupons in the past for the brita deals

      • Whitney

I called and asked and they do accept a store coupon and a MQ coupon! 😀

  12. Sharon

I stopped at Kroger’s on my way home and was shocked to find them in their clearance section! They were $13.99 so I got one for me and one for a gift for $3.99 each!! I can’t believe my luck – I always check Kroger’s kitchen clearance and find a lot of really good buys. Woohoo!

  13. Charis

Where in Walmart would I find these? Ziplock section?

    • CW

No in Housewares – the aisles with storage containers usually. BUT I just got an email on Friday from Jarden Consumer Services (FOODSAVER) that through the 15th they are having 50% off bags when you buy 8 or more boxes! I just ordered them. I got 8 boxes of quart bags (my personal favorite size) for $6 each. With tax and shipping to my door, $7.48 each! Cheaper than using the $2 coupon at Walmart. Those 8 boxes will probably last you at least 5 years, since after you use them, you cut off the top a bit *cut straight so the machine can reseal the bag on next use*, turn it inside out and put it in your dishwasher…they are reusable until they are so small that you cannot seal them.

  14. Jessica Robert

There is also a $10/1 coupon at target.com which makes it FREE. I got one today 🙂

  16. Krista Cordova

  17. Norma
