Sent from reader, Morgan:

I am a teacher and was wanting something to show my daughter’s daycare teachers, as well as my fellow 1st grade co-workers how much I love and appreciate them! I had a tight budget, but still wanted to make something fun and “Hip” that would brighten their day.

I used colored paper I had around, about 5 packs of crayons (bought before school started for SUPER cheap, thanks to tips from Hip2Save!) and black frames from Dollar Tree.

All I did was print the first letter of each teacher’s name using a super large font and then put a little note a the bottom. (“H is for Ms. Hall. A very special teacher.”) Then hot glued the crayons on (thank you Micheal’s coupons!) I even cut out the middle of the paper insert that was in the frame to make a “mat” to use. The tape I used to secure everything was bought SUPER cheap too after the holidays (thank you Hip2Save tips!)

Wanted to show this to help give others some ideas for the end of the school year OR to be thinking ahead when those crayon deals start popping up in August- buy extra and then you will be ready for Teacher Appreciation Week or another teacher gift. (Each teacher’s gift cost me less than $1.25.)

Thanks for all you do! I try to check your site each day during my quick 15 minute lunch break! I get so excited at lunch to see what deals you might have posted!

I love this idea. How creative. So the crayons are cut in half and then hot glued to the outside of the glass frame? I want to do this!

    • Nicole

For mine, I didn’t use the glass and glued to the paper directly. I thought of it like canvas art. It was a pretty neat looking 3d
piece. The pain was getting the crayons cut exactly how I wanted them, but I’m a redicilous profectionist lol.

      • Amanda

hahah I did that this year too! Pencils for 2 teachers, and crayons for 2. pencils are a pain! If you want ’em straight;) I did mine in shadow boxes – (again thank you, Michaels sale and bonus coupons;) and used stickers to put their names in them. The teachers LOVED them… great idea!! They are really neat looking hanging in their rooms!!

        • Kim

Do you have a picture to share?? That really sounds cool:)

          • shannon

Ohhhh shadow boxes are a good idea. That sounds very creative too! Thanks for sharing.

  12. Stefanie

    Fantastic idea!

  13. Michele

Great idea. Wish I saw this this week as we had teacher appreciation. Maybe think of this for next year.

  14. Morgan

I actually glued the crayons right to the paper. I did place the glass behind the paper (in between card stock and cardboard), The frame was a “chic” (aka “cheap”) Dollar Tree frame, so I thought the glass in their helped give it a little weight and didn’t leave it feeling TOO cheap 😉
They were actually warmly received, my daughter’s daycare teachers loved them and my sweet teacher friends seemed to like them too.
Anytime you make a teacher (or ANYBODY for that matter) feel appreciated, the gift is all that more meaningful!) And on that note: HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! =)

    • shannon

Morgan, you did great and we appreciate you sharing this. I just showed my husband who just asked if I can do this for all 22 of his teachers! I said umm can you maybe just pick your top 5??? LOL

    • Vironika

Morgan, you said you glued the crayons right to the paper; How did you keep the paper from sagging or falling out with the weight of the crayons when stood up right?
Also, did you just out of the blue come up with this? What I mean, is, do you have a blog where you have many of these ideas? I swear I used to be creative before I had kids! LOL Now that it really counts all I can do is search for other peoples wonderful ideas!
      Thanks again!!!

      • Morgan

        You are so sweet!
The paper stood up fine with the weight of the card board and glass behind it. I didn’t have any problems with it. (If you are making this for next year, hit up some yard sales-you might score and find them for .25!)

I saw a similar idea months ago and “filed” it away in my brain for Teacher Appreciation week. Just tweaked it some to make it a little more cost effective! =)

I am actually stopping teaching at the end of this year. After 7 years at an “at-risk” school I am going to take a little time off to spend with my toddler (but will go in once a week hopefully to volunteer to keep up with the kiddos! =)

I am hoping to start a blog maybe this summer of fun “chic” (aka CHEAP) gifts/things/party ideas/ organization ideas, etc. to make on a tighter budget! Thanks for the encouragement (it’s been on my “want to do if I have the time” list for a LONG while! =)

  15. Morgan

I meant the glass in “there” (don’t worry about me teaching the children please! =) TGIF!)

    • shannon

      LOL!

  16. Liz

I’ve been wanting to try this & you did a great job of changing it from the ones I’ve seen on Pinterest! I imagine they will love it, it’s a gift from the heart! Awesome job!

  17. Sarah

Go thtis idea a while back to do in Sunday school. Saw it on Pinterest.com!

  18. Kathy

I bought all of the supplies for this and must hurry and get it to the teacher before anybody else has this same gift idea for her. I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I love the ideas, but then it seems like everyone starts to do what you like. Guess I just need to be more creative.

  19. linda

    super cute!

  20. Vironika

What a WONDERFUL idea!! I think I’ll start buying supplies for this idea (as deals come up, of course!)–this is way too cute. I would like to know if Morgan has more ideas like this; a blog maybe? I’m interested!

  21. Stacy

Saw this idea on Pinterest! By the time my daughter goes to Kindergarten, every teacher at her school will have a few of these pictures already! 😉

  22. Julie

I’m a teacher, and I would love the receive one of these as a gift. They are adorable!

  23. Piyamas

What do you use to cut the crayons? I’ve seen these before and they always look perfect!

    • Morgan

I used a plastic cutting board and a dinner knife. =) Just scored the crayon by rolling it back and forth on the cutting board a few times and then snapped it to brake it in half. And don’t worry about your knife and cutting board (I don’t know if I would use a wooden one). They cleaned up great in the dish washer! =)
