Here are a few helpful comments I spotted:
Gourmet Today is a really spectacular cookbook. In the intro they (she…R Reichl and crew) state that basically the American food culture has changed significantly (“sales of salsa now top out catsup….”) as has the American lifestyle, with more demands on people’s time coupled with a greater interest in eating well, and eating better, healthier food. So in Gourmet Today they strive to provide a cookbook that addresses this. I think they do a fantastic job in their effort. I have a truly huge (nearly 300) and very well used cookbook collection and I do not offer my praise of this one lightly. They have presented a broad, diverse collection of recipes with extraordinary finesse. I only buy new cookbooks that have recipes that fascinate and intrigue me and maybe go beyond what I have. Was going to pass on this one at Costco (folks, it is 21.95 there!) but started reading it and couldn’t put it down. Got it home and have been enjoying it now for several weeks both to cook from and to read.
This was recommended to me and I gave it to my wife as a surprise gift. I scored big! Her comments follow- I just got this book and I love it! Reading through the recipes there are so many I want to try and I can hardly choose what to make first. I love that it includes drinks and vegetarian dishes so I can get lots of entertaining ideas from one book. I also really like that there are so many recipes from around the world that I can try. Hands down this will be the book I give to my foodie friends for the holidays this year.
The recipes are perfection and, almost even better, they are written in strong, clean language — a joy! If you’re as lucky as I am, you have your own personal librarian who can add a special library-style mylar sheath over the paper cover. This, and its predecessor Gourmet, look just beautiful together on my shelves! You need both cookbooks. Ruth Reichl is a genius! My favorites so far are the risotto recipes (try the Hoppin’ John version), the gorgeous pastries (check out the tarts), and the cocktails(vodka raspberry lime rickeys). I’m a vegetarian and find it easy to make substitutions in these recipes. There is also an entire section on vegetarian main dishes. As I said, the writing is so good that it makes you feel like okay, this isn’t so hard. I can do this. I also recommend Ruth Reichl’s memoirs — I’ve enjoyed each one.
(Thanks, Megan!)
Thanks Collin…I figured I would snag this as a gift. Then I read some reviews so I snagged one for myself as well.
Hi Collin! Just ordered 3. However, the price has gone up by a few cents. It’s now 4.69. This is a great buy! Thanks so much.
The deal is up to 5.70 now ..
Its now at 6.59 but still an incredible deal! Cant wait to give it to my husband as he has been doing alot of the cooking!
It’s at $11.84 now, should have got on this sooner!!!
The cost is now $11.28. Not a bad deal, but certainly not amazing.
Price is now at $20.00.
The rebate says must be submitted by Dec 31, 2010 … so I do not expect the rebate to work, unfortunately. I might send it in anyway and risk a stamp, but wanted to let you know.
I received the rebate request back in the mail with the following letter from bon appetit:
“Thank you for your interest in our promotion. Unfortunately, we are unable to process your request for a refund because the refund request exceeds the maximum allowable refund threshold.”
So, no rebate but it was still a good deal on the cookbook! Thanks Collin.
