These kits are wonderful, but I made the mistake of buying my kit in winter. After the butterfly’s hatched, they were forced to spend their lives in the little mesh cage that came with the kit because I could not release them outside. Since the butterfly’s basically eat sugar water, the bottom of the mesh cage gets sticky (almost like butterfly fly paper) after just a few days. It was heartbreaking for me to keep them in the mesh cage until they died. If you’re going to buy a kit, buy one in a season where you can release them if you should choose to.

Can anyone tell me does the larva come with the net or do you buy it separate?

    • Pamela

Everything you need is sent to you. Including the mesh cage thing.(Not sure if you are calling it a net?)

You buy the caterpillars separate. If you buy the kit you only pay shipping for them to arrive to your door which I think was around $5. At least thats what we did.

We just did this for the second time and only two of our five caterpillars made it to chrysalises and then butterflies, so I contacted the company and they sent us more caterpillars right away. Really great customer service.
Read the link to be sure but the kits we have bought have all come with a certificate you send in or redeem online with a code to have your caterpillars sent – that way you can be sure to do it at a time when the weather is good and when you won’t be on vacation or something.

This is also good for raising preying mantis too. You can buy the eggs on Ebay and then tie them to a small branch you put inside and wait until it hatches. We had one egg and hundreds hatched one day. We left it outside overnight and only kept what was still inside. We raised one for about three months until our cat crunched it. It was a very sad day since we had actually come to enjoy having the preying mantis as a “pet” that we could hold. In Asia, people keep them as house pets to kill bugs! 🙂

Bought these the last time, as I thought the price was great, but my local Shopkos had them on clearance last week for $7 something, so you may want to check there!
