Kroger: Double Coupons Replaced With Lower Prices + Better Weekly Specials (Central Region)

Calling all you Central Region Kroger shoppers (including stores in Indiana, Illinois and some stores in Missouri, Michigan, and Ohio!). Rumor has it that beginning on July 31st, stores in the Central region will be discontinuing the practice of doubling coupons. In place of double coupons, Kroger has promised lower prices and more aggressive weekly specials.

What are your thoughts about these changes?! Do you think the lower prices and more aggressive weekly specials will make up for the end of double coupons?!

(Thanks, Brieanna!)

depend on how low the prices will be

    • meg

It would never be advertised as free which although rarely can happen when you double coupons….

  2. cindy2705

That’s not cool. The prices won’t be low enough to save the same amount of money you do when you use coupons.

  3. Sue

Our Kroger in Arkansas will stop doubling coupons starting tomorrow – July 10th 🙁

    • Erin

Yes, here in Memphis too 🙁 It’s the whole Delta region

      • lisadesigner1

        Memphis here 🙂

        No doubles makes me sad…

    • Autumn Crow VanMeter

I’m in West Virginia & they stopped doubling May 12th — we are the Mid-Atlantic region. It’s not as good for me because I no longer am able to get free baby wipes.

    • amanda

i agree guys this is not a good idea I am in tn and our Kroger stopped a while back and I have not been in there since the low prices are just the same as wal mart now I just price match if it is cheaper there I was pretty sad!!!!

  4. grechen

Agree thoses of us who use coupns know that we can beat any deal, thus very sad news

    • Xenia

ditto 🙁 very disappointing 🙁 wish Meijer would be closer

  5. pamela maciejewski

it bites – none of the stores around me double coupons so I drive once a month to a Kroger that is 45 minutes away from my home and do a monthly huge grocery shop saving tons of money but if they stop doubling coupons I wont be going there anymore

  6. nikiwalsh

Double coupons is the only reason I shop there.

  7. brandice

Hope this does not come to Georgia!!!!

  8. Caroline

They’ve already implemented this in the south and it’s awful! There are few loss leaders each week that are lower than before, but for the most part I haven’t noticed any price changes. I didn’t go to Kroger often anyway, but now I skip it all together.

    • Caroline

      I’m in North Carolina, btw!

  9. Joy

Looks like I won’t be shopping there as much.

  10. Diane

Virginia did this in May….don’t shop there nearly as often as I used to, but still can get some good deals!

    • Suzanne H

I am in Virginia too and I have noticed a few lower prices but for the most part, their sales seem to be the same. I don’t think those of us who seriously use coupons will be able to make up the difference. I don’t plan to shop there very much anymore since another store around the corner offers doubling up to $0.50 and “doubling” $0.51-$0.99 coupons to $1.

      • Autumn Crow VanMeter

Kroger is my only choice here in West Virginia besides Wal-Mart unfortunately. No one doubles 🙁

  11. jessica

I will have to see to believe, but my Kroger (which is ending their double coupon policy July 31st) is pretty equal with my local Wal-Mart as far as prices go, so I don’t know how much lower they can go, other than on their brand of items. With that being said, I’m going to guess that using coupons at Kroger will really not be much different that using them at Wal-Mart. Too bad there are so many people who abused the whole coupon system so much, because now it seems that stores and manufacturers are making it harder and harder to find decent prices on groceries!

  12. D

I think Atlanta will be the last market to go. Too much competition with Publix.

    • rn30032

I hope it does not come to Atlanta. with double coupons, stuff is almost free. I do shop at Publix with their double q’s, BOGO and Publix store q’s and it makes for a good deal as well

  13. Carol

I won’t be shopping at Kroger anymore. Double coupons was the ONLY reason I would drive across town. I can price match at Walmart.

  14. nikiwalsh

doubled coupons is the ONLY reason I shop at Kroger,

    • D

I agree, I’ll be heading to Publix more often now. They still double here in Atlanta and the stores are clean, well-stocked and the employees are helpful.

  15. Christie

I feel like they already did this (back in March) and then they started doubling again. Am I wrong?

  16. Alea Shinn

I don’t think prices are going to be lowered enough for people to keep shopping there. They are going to lose a lot of customers by the sounds of it.

  17. Gloria Johnson

I live in Ohio have always shop Krogers and Meijers I guess I will be shopping Meijers and Giant Eagle. I don’t think Kroger will last very long after this change

  18. Amber

Kroger stopped doubling coupons in my part of Texas abt a year or so ago. I haven’t noticed much of a change in the prices. I seldom go there any more. it seems to be just as much of a hassle using coupons there as it is at walmart. They have very poor customer service skills too. I’m sure not all stores are the same but as for the ones here – I will stay away.

    • Stormy

I live in Texas, too. We lost coupons….doubling…over a year ago. I RARELY shop there any more. What I mainly do now is get all of the ads and shop at Wal-Mart. Not my favorite place, but cheaper in the long run. Sorry y’all are losing coupons, but I’ve been wondering why it hit us first. ??

    • Bianca

In Texas too. I find myself at Albertsons and Tom Thumb more than anything now. I try to stay out of Wal-Mart but it’s a necessary evil!

  19. sportmom3

They still double here in central Ohio once. Theystill stop I’ll go somewhere else that does double

  20. Kat

Ralphs (which is a kroger family store) stopped doubling coupons about 2 years ago. I personally did not see any changes in low prices.

  21. Kristi M.

My local Kroger store hasn’t doubled coupons in forever, but even without coupons at all they’ve had better prices than most grocery stores around me (I’m in Northern Indiana). I’d wait and see how they implement the sales and lower prices before giving up hope on the store.

  22. Nicole

That’s not a rumor. They announced it on their Facebook page today.

  23. Karin

That is a sad news.. If they won’t double coupons, I won’t shop there much like I used to. 🙁

  24. J

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now that just aggravates me. Meijer quit doubling coupons and all I had left was Kroger. They were the ONLY place that still doubled coupons 🙁

  25. Trena

Kroger stopped doubling in TX a long time ago. As for prices being cheaper, don’t count on it. Their prices here are still VERY comperable to other grocery stores in the area -all being higher than wal-mart. However, you can still manage to get great deals and free items with some of their sales using face value coupons. All in all, I go to get the deals, but do my regular shopping elsewhere.

  26. Joni

Krogers is the last store to stop double coupons in our area. It is sad. Meijer stopped and said we would save more with their lower prices. Not true. Very disappointed!

  27. Anqi

NOOO. Why did I move from Atlanta to Michigan?!

    • nancy W

My thoughts exactly I moved from Florida to Ohio I surely miss publix

  28. Peabud

This also could be very bad news for us in the south (I’m in North Carolina). It was announced today that Kroger has bought Harris Teeter, which has been wonderful with doubling coupons, e-vic specials and super double coupons once a month.

    • Caroline

The press release says HT policies will remain the same. Hopefully this will stick as Kroger hasn’t been doubling for a while now!

      • Kami

I want to beleive the article about HT policies staying the same but I am not holding my breath.

        • Suzanne H

They will stay the same for a while and then slowly, one by one, the policies will change. At least that’s how it was in Richmond, VA when Martin’s (Giant) bought Ukrops which was the GREATEST store EVER!

          • Erin

The greatest store ever? How so? Customer service was good, but they were more expensive than any other store in the Richmond area and they doubled only one day a week. I’m all for shopping local, but I never understood the area’s infatuation with Ukrop’s. I don’t even think their prepared food is good, and I’m kinda surprised that they decided to keep that end of the business. The bread/buns are always stale, and a coworker told me they made the BEST mac and cheese EVER. I was prepared for a revelation, but it was just mac and cheese. Nothing special.

  29. tracy

I too will switch to Walmart and price match. I only shop at Kroger for the double coupons. Any rumors on the Louisville region Krogers?

  30. Cindy

They stopped doubling here a few months ago and lower prices? HAH, on some items, but certainly not worth shopping there. I do go in for special prices and deals, and that’s about all. Meijer still doubles coupons.

  31. Bo

They just bough the Harris Teeter corp stores so guess that means that they are gonna change the policy there too…..Ugh!!

  32. victoria

Krogers in Northern Kentucky & Greater Cincinnati stopped doubling coupons months ago…and their “Lower Prices” are not really lower. In fact, many of the items I have been buying have had increases!! Meijer runs better sales now in our area

    • Jennie

I also live in this region, and have noticed prices slowly but steadily increasing. Some items have gone up as much as $.50 from a year ago. It’s ridiculous!!

  33. Mo

I live in the Cincinnati region and they stopped doubling in February. At first they had some really good deals on a few items, but not so much any more.

  34. Danielle gilmore

I live in Virginia and it was announced today they are merging with Harris Teeter, but HT will keep their name

  35. Barb Hill Benson

JC Penney tried something similar last year, and it failed miserably. They are now scrambling to lure all of their lost customers back. Don’t they ever learn that the public is not as dumb as they are???

  36. Kami

They did that here in Hampton Roads VA, and yes they have some good deals but not a whole lot. The only thing I can say that is good is that they don’t have limits. A few weeks ago they had a Mega deal with Kraft Mac N Cheese and after the deal the Mac N Cheese was .26 cents a box, and Starkist Tuna that ended up being either .48 or .68 cents a can (not sure but it was the cheapest price I have seen on tuna in a while). So some of the prices are good with the sales like they have promised but the stores are usuaIly dirty and out of the way for me. What I am really upset about is that Kroger has bought out Harris Teeter. Harris Teeter is a wonderfull store where they double coupons everyday up to .99cents, they also have Super Doubles or Tripples every other month where they super double coupons $2.00 and under and tripple .99cents and under. Harris Teeter has incredible customer service, and the stores buy their produce from local farmers. There have been a few times where I have forgotten to use a coupon and I just go up to customer service and tell them and they will take the coupon and give me the cash back. Now that Kroger has bought them I just see all that ending, its all really sad.

  37. nancy W

Kroger is already high priced grocery store so if they quit doubling coupons that will be very sad for many of us. I agree with Alea Shinn I don’t think they will lower prices that much either. And if they are stopping doubling in theses areas they should stop it everywhere. And I know alot of people have large families and depend on the double coupons to be able to afford to feed their families. Sad I only have Kroger and Meijer in my area guess it will be Meijer for me they still double

  38. Jamie D

This sucks! I love my King Soopers! I’ll still shop there because its 5 mins from my house and the employees are so much nicer than my Walmart. So hopefully their sales will be outstanding at least an using coupons will be a bonus.

  39. Sue

We don’t shop at Kroger much here in Southeastern Virginia but I just received this email from our Harris Teeter:

    (Dear Harris Teeter Customer,

Harris Teeter announced today that it is merging with Kroger. While a contract has been signed, the merger will not be complete for a few months. We announced in January that we were going through a process of looking at strategic options; this announcement completes that process.)

That is just the first paragraph, but we love our Harris Teeter. Their stores here have the best customer service around, we love the super doubles and triples, their everyday doubles up to $.99, their stores are so much cleaner than Kroger and they unload your buggies for you as they scan. That really helps to keep an eye on the prices.

We are just hoping that they can still keep these services under Kroger.

  40. Kimberly

It happened here in part of Ohio back in March. The prices lowered for a couple of months, but are now higher than ever, even with sale prices and “Mega Events.” I won’t shop their now as the only response I get from management and corporate is “We have new lower pricing,” even when I produce receipts proving otherwise.

  41. Kris

They did this a while ago at our Ralph’s (Kroger’s affiliate) out here in CA. At first I was not happy but the other stores around don’t offer double coupons any more either so it just seemed that they were the last ones to quit this policy. I started going to Walmart more but in the end I am doing most of my shopping at Ralph’s again. Why – the specials are better (except for fresh produce – I get better prices at Valley Produce & Sprouts). Also the checkers know what they are doing and so I get out faster and less hassle with my coupons. Also my Ralph’s offers 10 cents off each gallon of gas at Shell for points that I accumulate for shopping there – this month and last – it was 20 cents! When you drive a big Suburban you will take any break on gas you can get! Anyways – I just wanted you all to know that it may not be as bad as you think – give it a try.

  42. Abbie

I live in Utah, my Smiths don’t double. I have been spending the summer in Cheyenne, Wyoming while my hubby is working here. The King Soopers here in Cheyenne does double and I LOVE IT! This will not effect me much when I go back home next month, but I have sure enjoyed the doubles while I have been in Wyoming.

  43. Heather

A few of our local Krogers here in IL stopped doubling over a year ago. And I haven’t been back there since. It’s not so much that they stopped doubling, but that their prices are higher then what I can get at other, more locally owned stores.

  44. Paula McIntosh

How do you find out which stores in michigan are stopping?

  45. danielle

I think this will hurt kroger’s business, as I believe I will probably not be buying as many items from there if the store in my area does not double coupons anymore. I will be VERY disappointed!

  46. Kristina

My first thought is, “Meijer here I come”. My second is “Sayonara Krogers!”

  47. devin

Most stores in my area do not double coupons any more. I still find good deals all the time, I’ve just accommodated! They still take coupons, it just takes some getting used to!

  48. Bennetta

Well my local store Baker’s has never doubled any coupons, so that was a luxury that I never got to have, but I still get the better deals there when things are on sale and also the added bonus of the fuel points to help with gas.

  49. Christina

I’m guessing I’m in the minority here, but our Kroger (in KY) stopped doubling about two months ago, and it has made absolutely no difference in my coupon strategy. I never relied much on doubling anyway, but I do like our store’s sales and specials. And to be honest, we just love our Kroger store – friendly service, patient people and one of the few places that still allows overage. And we hate our Wal-Mart; we get treated like dirt there. So doubling or no doubling, I’m a loyal and satisfied Kroger customer. 🙂
