This will question will sound really dumb to most of you. If I buy this, do I also need to subscribe to a service, or will this work on it’s own, similar to how a VCR works on its own. And yes, we still own a VCR, although we use it rarely, and most of our tv-viewing is via streaming netflix through our xbox. Thank you!

You have to subscribe to a monthly service which is about $13 a month depending on if you want to pay it annually or a few dollars more if you want to pay it every month. I have had Tivo since 2006 and I love it. We just got an upgraded box last christmas and got lifetime service on our old box for only $50. So I gave it to my sister so she doesn’t pay anything to use it.

Get a Roku! It’s better and cheaper! My Tivo broke and I couldn’t keep my lifetime subscription. I had to buy a whole new unit PLUS a new subscription. Back then it was $300 for the life time subscription. Fine print: It’s only good for one machine and if your TiVo breaks, it’s void.

Can you please explain to me how a roku works? I’ve always wondered about that. Also which do you recommend? TIA
